:00:08. > :00:13.Welcome to the south. In tonight's programme, but is it that mean so

:00:13. > :00:20.much. Families tending their loved ones graves are given an ultimatum

:00:20. > :00:26.to clear them. Hide you tell the parents of little children that

:00:26. > :00:30.they cannot have anything up? I do not understand. The government

:00:30. > :00:34.scheme that has failed a family now facing their second winter without

:00:34. > :00:40.a boiler. In tears, children and teachers visit what is left of

:00:40. > :00:49.their school which burned down at the weekend. Absolutely gutted. I

:00:49. > :00:59.cannot believe it. One of the family flies in to celebrate the

:00:59. > :01:03.

:01:04. > :01:06.80th anniversary of the Schneider Trophy. Clear your graves or we

:01:06. > :01:09.will clean them ourselves, that is the ultimatum given to families at

:01:09. > :01:12.Yateley in Hampshire whose loved ones are buried in the town's

:01:13. > :01:17.Heathland Cemetery. The council has decided to enforce its own long-

:01:17. > :01:20.established rule that graves should be plain and unadorned. By doing so,

:01:20. > :01:30.they are reversing recent practice, and that has angered and upset

:01:30. > :01:30.

:01:30. > :01:34.relatives who say they were left out of discussions.

:01:34. > :01:38.Tributes to loved ones who have passed away. But these memorials

:01:38. > :01:44.are no longer welcome. Families have been told to get rid of them

:01:44. > :01:50.by the end of next month. This man's mother has been on anti-

:01:50. > :01:54.depressants ever since his father died. My mum still comes up here

:01:54. > :02:00.and looks after his grave. They talk to each other. It is like a

:02:00. > :02:06.little community. They want to take it away, put some grass down. We do

:02:06. > :02:14.not know why. They want a long cemetery because it is easier to

:02:14. > :02:19.cut the grass. It is to save money. For the Wilkinson family it is a

:02:19. > :02:25.matter of principle. It was his last election -- his last wish and

:02:25. > :02:28.it was something we wanted to carry through. The council says the

:02:28. > :02:34.council have always had strict rules as to what memorials around.

:02:34. > :02:39.Over the years there has been a rise in an elaborate grave plot.

:02:39. > :02:47.People are copying each other. We did not want to be heavy-handed but

:02:47. > :02:55.now I decision has had to be made. There are 1,300 internment here at

:02:55. > :03:02.the cemetery. The council said I'd many letters of consultation and 30

:03:02. > :03:11.of them were received. We are interested in speaking to the

:03:11. > :03:17.people who chose the cemetery. Brown was killed in service in

:03:17. > :03:22.Afghanistan. He asked to be buried here. This week, his grave was

:03:22. > :03:25.altered. These families now have less than two weeks to do the same.

:03:25. > :03:32.They have strengthened their resolve to keep things at the way

:03:32. > :03:42.they are. A lot of people feel very similar. We're going to go forward

:03:42. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:51.from here., the council would not confirm when it will take place. A

:03:51. > :03:54.man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a 16

:03:54. > :03:57.year-old girl in West Sussex. She was found at a house in Lindfield

:03:57. > :03:59.with stab wounds to her face and body. 19-year-old Christopher

:03:59. > :04:02.Parsons from Haywards Heath has been remanded in custody until

:04:02. > :04:09.November 4th. He has also been charged with possessing an

:04:09. > :04:14.offensive weapon. The officer in charge of an

:04:14. > :04:19.operation to arrest armed Roberts - - armed robbers did not realise

:04:19. > :04:22.they had been killed by it -- they had been shot by police. It was not

:04:22. > :04:29.until he sold them lying on the ground that he knew they had been

:04:29. > :04:35.shot. The pair were killed when they tried to rob a plan near the

:04:35. > :04:42.HSBC bank in 2007. Our correspondent has been following

:04:42. > :04:46.the inquest. Did he shed any light on what happened? This was the

:04:46. > :04:49.result of a long operation by police. They were trying to catch

:04:49. > :04:54.at gang they believed were responsible for a series of

:04:54. > :04:59.robberies. One bad day, they were lying in wait. When the security

:04:59. > :05:05.van pulled out, the officer pulled out -- the robber pulled out his

:05:05. > :05:11.gun and it was then he was shot and killed. Today we heard from DCI

:05:11. > :05:16.Wilson, he had heard across the airwaves the guard was attacked. He

:05:16. > :05:21.was told they had engaged to suspects. He got out, walked over,

:05:21. > :05:27.saw the body on the ground, said normally, people are fighting, but

:05:27. > :05:32.he looked very peaceful. He then looked over and medics had pulled

:05:32. > :05:37.over the balaclava of the other victim. It was at that point he

:05:38. > :05:46.realised what had happened. Did he explain why this had not happened

:05:47. > :05:50.easier? Why the men were not arrested earlier? They were worried

:05:50. > :05:54.he had armour-piercing bullets and was going to try to shoot through

:05:54. > :06:01.the security van. When he pulled out his gun at the rifleman made

:06:01. > :06:05.the decision to shoot him. He praised the courageous actions of

:06:05. > :06:15.the right for men who shot when needed to protect the guard and the

:06:15. > :06:24.public. -- the rival man. Sussex Police have released the

:06:24. > :06:27.name of a man they want to question about a fatal hit and run. He is

:06:27. > :06:30.Imran Shaukat, at 26 year-old man who had been living in Worthing.

:06:30. > :06:33.Officers want to speak to him about the death of Kalan Fletcher over

:06:33. > :06:36.the weekend. The police have already recovered a van thought to

:06:36. > :06:41.have been driven in the hit and run. A simple floral tribute mark the

:06:41. > :06:47.place where Kalan Fletcher was killed. The 23-year-old's body was

:06:47. > :06:52.spotted lying by the motorway. Sussex Police say the young man was

:06:52. > :07:01.the victim of a hit and run. They have now released the name of

:07:01. > :07:06.someone they want to question. He is Imran Shaukat. Sussex Police say

:07:06. > :07:10.he may hold vital information about the incident. Officers say he had

:07:10. > :07:17.been living in Worthing but may have links to Luton, Manchester and

:07:17. > :07:20.Barking. It is understood he is a Pakistani national. The UK Border

:07:21. > :07:25.Agency confirmed they were assisting Sussex Police with their

:07:25. > :07:31.inquiries. A Ford Transit van which is believed to have been involved

:07:31. > :07:40.in the hit him on was recovered yesterday. -- involved in the hit

:07:40. > :07:42.and run. Sussex Police has asked Imran Shaukat to come forward.

:07:42. > :07:45.A saga of disappointment and despair. That has been the

:07:45. > :07:47.experience of a Dorset family who have been trying to get their

:07:48. > :07:50.boiler repaired under the government Warm Front scheme. They

:07:51. > :07:53.have been trying for a year. Twice they have been given firm

:07:54. > :07:56.appointments to have a new boiler installed. Twice they have been let

:07:57. > :08:04.down. They now face the prospect of a second winter without central

:08:04. > :08:10.heating. The boiler at his house finally

:08:10. > :08:19.give up the ghost last bottom. have been keeping warm with

:08:19. > :08:22.electric heaters, they are incredibly expensive to run. They

:08:23. > :08:31.are full-time carers for their severely disabled son, which makes

:08:31. > :08:34.them eligible for the Warm Front scheme. After a survey, contractors

:08:34. > :08:38.were Scheduled to do the work in April. They arrived without a

:08:38. > :08:45.boiler. Another appointment fell through when the workmen failed to

:08:45. > :08:49.show up. After months of calling the Warm Front scheme, long periods

:08:49. > :08:54.on hold and unreturned calls, last week they were told because so much

:08:55. > :08:59.time had passed they would have to start the application process again.

:08:59. > :09:06.I am very angry. Not just for our family but for all the family's out

:09:06. > :09:12.there in the same situation. Particularly all the elderly and

:09:12. > :09:22.vulnerable people who will have no heating this winter. It is agreed

:09:22. > :09:23.

:09:23. > :09:26.just and unacceptable. I shall be pursuing this as soon as I can. We

:09:26. > :09:31.do have cases with this scheme, they are fewer than the past but

:09:31. > :09:36.there does seem to be issues. They let contract out where everything

:09:37. > :09:46.is not satisfactory. In a statement today, the Warm Front scheme told

:09:47. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:06.For this family there is an added urgency. Their data is due to give

:10:06. > :10:16.birth this Friday. -- daughter. All we have is a halogen heater which

:10:16. > :10:18.

:10:18. > :10:20.you cannot regulate the temperature Up to 10 of the South's

:10:20. > :10:22.Conservative MPs are planning to rebel against the government in

:10:22. > :10:25.tonight's vote referendum on Britain's membership of the

:10:25. > :10:27.European Union. David Cameron will face his biggest Commons rebellion

:10:27. > :10:30.since entering Downing Street. Henry Smith, the MP for Crawley,

:10:30. > :10:33.Caroline Dinenage who represents Gosport and the Isle of Wight MP

:10:33. > :10:36.Andrew Turner are some of those voting against their leader. The

:10:36. > :10:46.South Dorset MP Richard Drax says billions of pounds is being wasted

:10:46. > :10:48.

:10:48. > :10:53.propping up the eurozone. I would argue there is nothing more

:10:53. > :10:58.important than this. We are in this mess partly because we are a member

:10:58. > :11:02.of this federalist state, this on bureaucratic nightmare, frankly,

:11:02. > :11:12.which has taken away all regulations that would enable us to

:11:12. > :11:13.

:11:13. > :11:15.be competitive. It spreads out into employment and jobs. BBC South has

:11:15. > :11:18.learned more than 1000 rail passengers have been overcharged

:11:18. > :11:20.because of a problem with a ticket machine at Basingstoke station.

:11:20. > :11:23.First Great Western had apologised and launched an investigation into

:11:23. > :11:26.how the error occurred on a machine over a fortnight. It affected

:11:26. > :11:29.people who bought tickets between Basingstoke and Reading. The

:11:29. > :11:38.company is offering refunds. Still to come, warming up for United,

:11:38. > :11:41.Aldershot show them how it is done by scoring five. People visiting

:11:41. > :11:44.the site of a school in rural Dorset which has been severely

:11:44. > :11:46.damaged by fire broke down in tears today. The head teacher of

:11:46. > :11:49.Powerstock Primary said he was absolutely devastated to see the

:11:49. > :11:53.oldest part of the building completely burnt out. It is thought

:11:53. > :12:02.an electrical fault was the cause. Gutted car absolutely gutted. I

:12:02. > :12:11.cannot believe it has happened. Still to come, the woman who froze

:12:11. > :12:13.out the dragons with ice-free I'm sure you'll remember these

:12:13. > :12:16.images from late last year in London. The government's decision

:12:16. > :12:20.allowing universities to charge tuition fees of up to 9,000 from

:12:20. > :12:22.next year caused mass demonstrations and real anger. It

:12:22. > :12:28.sparked fears that potential students simply wouldn't apply for

:12:28. > :12:31.a university place because it would be unaffordable. Well, an exclusive

:12:31. > :12:33.survey for the BBC's Inside Out programme today suggests that one

:12:33. > :12:40.in ten potential university students probably won't go next

:12:41. > :12:48.year for that reason. But 54% say they probably will go, in spite of

:12:48. > :12:50.the hike in fees. And another 28% say they'll definitely go. In fact,

:12:50. > :12:55.around three quarters of those surveyed felt the long-term

:12:56. > :13:00.benefits outweighed the cost. Well, Jon Cuthill from our Inside Out

:13:00. > :13:05.programme is here to talk about this. Jon, perhaps a surprise that

:13:05. > :13:07.so many people aren't deterred? Really interesting - despite the

:13:07. > :13:17.outcry when fees were announced, the majority of students are still

:13:17. > :13:21.

:13:21. > :13:25.aiming for university. The decision process may have changed. Mary

:13:25. > :13:28.Barlow from Hampshire is one of the thousands of students in the South

:13:28. > :13:32.who has some big decisions to make. At first it made me not want to go

:13:32. > :13:39.to university but I suppose it is better to go for it and it will not

:13:39. > :13:44.be that difficult. I can hope three pay it back. Despite the horrible

:13:44. > :13:49.cost, I would get a degree which means I will get an OK job, had

:13:49. > :13:54.three. But the costs of going to university have jumped. Absolutely.

:13:54. > :13:57.We called in money man Alvin Hall to crunch the numbers. Parents may

:13:57. > :14:00.want to remain seated for this bit. He took everything into account

:14:00. > :14:04.from start to finish. So that's living costs, the new tuition fees,

:14:04. > :14:07.the interest on those tuition fees, three years worth of baked beans -

:14:07. > :14:13.the whole shebang. I don't think anyone was expecting what he came

:14:13. > :14:22.up with. I think owning interest over such a long time paying back

:14:23. > :14:28.the loan, is a number most people do not think about. 75,000.

:14:28. > :14:32.that one person? That is for one person. A desperate moment where he

:14:32. > :14:42.hoped it was for the whole group! So are there any ways of keeping

:14:42. > :14:44.

:14:44. > :14:49.costs down? There are. You can get sponsorship. Get in with a big

:14:49. > :14:52.company so you can learn while you learn. Paying tuition fees upfront

:14:52. > :14:54.if you have the means you'd obviously avoid the interest. Or

:14:54. > :14:58.even looking abroad at opportunities there but make sure

:14:58. > :15:05.you do the research and ensure what you get out of it would be

:15:05. > :15:11.recognised here. Thank you. And Inside Out is tonight at 7.30pm

:15:11. > :15:14.here on BBC one. An exhibition celebrating one of

:15:14. > :15:17.the most fabulous air events of the last century opened this afternoon.

:15:17. > :15:21.It features the eightieth anniversary of Britain winning the

:15:21. > :15:26.Schneider air trophy. The event is taking place in the original

:15:26. > :15:34.waterfront hanger at Calshot from where the original competitors flew.

:15:34. > :15:38.Chris Coneybeer reports. The thrill of watching small planes

:15:38. > :15:42.being pushed ever faster by their dashing young pilots attracted

:15:42. > :15:49.crowds in their tens of thousands in the years between the world wars.

:15:49. > :15:55.The biggest thrill for many was the Schneider Air Trophy, won outright

:15:55. > :16:01.by Britain in 1931. It was something quite different. It was

:16:01. > :16:07.so quiet in those days. Very few cars. Very few aeroplanes. Today,

:16:07. > :16:11.exhibition opened in the hangar at Calshot with one of the original

:16:11. > :16:17.planes in place. Many of the features in these helped develop

:16:17. > :16:22.the Spitfire. A spit Fire performed over the side to pay its own part

:16:22. > :16:26.in the celebrations. Had we not won the Schneider Trophy, we may not

:16:26. > :16:36.have got the spit fire and we may have to have won the Battle of

:16:36. > :16:41.Britain. Well, we may not have won the war. Another thrilling example

:16:41. > :16:51.of our heritage alive and well. In this case, celebrating the

:16:51. > :16:59.

:16:59. > :17:03.Great pictures and great sound. Fabulous seeing those Spitfires.

:17:03. > :17:07.Brighton's a giant Ferris wheel has opened. Work started on the 6

:17:07. > :17:12.million structure last month, tourism managers hope it will

:17:12. > :17:22.attract a quarter of a million visitors. Some people nearby say

:17:22. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:30.the structure is too close to their homes. Impressive. On to the sport.

:17:30. > :17:36.I did not see it coming. A shock result. One of the surprise results

:17:36. > :17:41.of the season. Five at Dagenham and Redbridge.

:17:42. > :17:50.Manchester United. Man United coming down to the region during

:17:50. > :17:53.night. Well done, Aldershot. Fantastic result. Let's take a look

:17:53. > :17:57.at the goals. Jermain McGlashan volley, Peter Vicenti on the follow

:17:57. > :18:07.up. Michael Rankine penalty goal back, then Luke Gutteridge diving

:18:07. > :18:23.

:18:23. > :18:32.header, 4-2 by time Jermain Aldershot are ready for tomorrow

:18:32. > :18:34.night. They face the United side. Manchester sit. It wasn't just

:18:34. > :18:37.Aldershot scoring five this weekend, Crawley continued their assault on

:18:37. > :18:44.League two with an impressive win at Wimbledon. And what's happening

:18:44. > :18:48.at Bournemouth? Here's your round Crawley Town have won six games in

:18:48. > :18:53.a row and this was a five-star effort at Wimbledon. They were up

:18:53. > :18:58.in the opening 10 minutes after an own goal, Paul Davies doubled the

:18:58. > :19:06.lead. Wimbledon fought back to level by half-time before a three-

:19:06. > :19:11.goal salvo. Matt tubs in the parents is bar. For Lee living up

:19:11. > :19:15.to their pre-season favourites tag. Reading were denied a second home

:19:15. > :19:22.win by Southampton. The free-kick may not have crept in but the

:19:22. > :19:28.follow-up did. Southampton had 10 men and by the time he walked into

:19:28. > :19:34.the box. I am disappointed for the players. We deserved to win. We

:19:34. > :19:38.were the better side. The players carried it out. The goal against

:19:38. > :19:44.was disappointed. Delighted to get a point because Reading were the

:19:44. > :19:49.better team. We were nowhere near the level we have been. You passed

:19:49. > :19:59.the ball really well. We never got a grip of the football. Portsmouth

:19:59. > :20:01.

:20:01. > :20:10.remain without a manager. It does Portsmouth finished all three

:20:10. > :20:16.points in the second half through Kitson. The Bournemouth chairman

:20:16. > :20:21.has admitted talks continue over new investment. A locally-based a

:20:21. > :20:25.Russian businessman is poised to buy a major stake. Fans may say

:20:25. > :20:30.Hallelujah to that but on the pitch at the Cherries are in the bottom

:20:30. > :20:34.four. They slipped to another home defeat after Mark Pugh gave them

:20:34. > :20:37.the lead against Bury, goals either side of half-time handed the

:20:37. > :20:44.visitors all three points and condemned Bournemouth to a 5th home

:20:44. > :20:48.defeat. Interesting times at Bournemouth.

:20:48. > :20:54.There is talk that Sven Goran Eriksson could have been fired.

:20:54. > :20:57.Monday night football at the Amex tonight. Brighton hosting West Ham.

:20:57. > :21:00.A win would send the Albion from 12th to 4th in a typically tight

:21:00. > :21:05.Championship table. Live to the ground now and Johnny Cantor,

:21:05. > :21:14.Johnny, Gus Poyet's dipped into the loan market too? Yes, the recent

:21:14. > :21:19.lull has prompted him into action. Gonzalo Rose is set for his debut.

:21:19. > :21:23.Steve Harper has joined on a month's deal for Newcastle. After

:21:23. > :21:28.drawing a blank against Hull City, the Premier League experience may

:21:28. > :21:34.be required. West Ham still have several players from the top flight.

:21:34. > :21:39.A win and they go forth but they could drop into the bottom half.

:21:39. > :21:42.Another indication of the narrow margins in the division. We will

:21:42. > :21:45.have the goals tomorrow. On Friday night we told you about Worthing

:21:45. > :21:48.rugby club's unbeaten start to the new season. On Saturday they beat

:21:48. > :21:51.Lydney 80 points to 31. They remain second in the national league two

:21:51. > :21:54.south table though. At the Madeski stadium yesterday, London Irish

:21:54. > :21:58.gave a debut to Shontayne Hape as they beat Newcastle in the LV Cup.

:21:58. > :22:01.The returning Delon Armitage was among the try scorers. There's just

:22:01. > :22:04.under a week left for you to nominate someone for this year's

:22:04. > :22:07.BBC South Unsung hero award. It's the prize which recognises someone

:22:07. > :22:10.who's given something special to grass roots sport in the region.

:22:10. > :22:14.Remember to nominate someone, you need to go the BBC website and

:22:14. > :22:24.follow the instructions to download and complete an entry form.

:22:24. > :22:32.

:22:32. > :22:36.Nominations close on the 30th And also, Guildford not a good

:22:36. > :22:40.start to the basketball. They were beaten by Plymouth. They are out at

:22:40. > :22:47.the group stage. They make the final last season.

:22:47. > :22:51.Disappointment. Not so long ago she was pitching her idea on Dragon's

:22:51. > :22:56.Den. Today Karen Coombes was launching her first ice-free ice-

:22:56. > :22:59.skating rink in Brighton. Karen developed a type of roller-skate
