:01:16. > :01:23.rolling pin. Georgina Edwards -- Edmans was beaten to death. The

:01:23. > :01:26.prosecution alleges her killer left the DNA evidence. Our correspondent

:01:26. > :01:34.was at Winchester Crown Court. You might find some of the details of

:01:34. > :01:38.this report unsettling. Opening the case for the

:01:38. > :01:42.prosecution, the QC gave a horrific description of the injuries

:01:42. > :01:46.inflicted by the killer. He said she had been repeatedly stabbed,

:01:46. > :01:52.before being beaten to death of a heavy marble rolling pin. The

:01:52. > :01:55.prosecutor said the pattern of light wins on the body of 77-year-

:01:55. > :02:02.old Georgina Edmonds revealed she had been tortured for her credit

:02:02. > :02:12.card PIN number. She lived in a cottage near Beenham. Her body was

:02:12. > :02:18.found by her son, and to workers, in January of 2008. The prosecutor

:02:18. > :02:25.told the jury that there was a forensic DNA link between the

:02:25. > :02:31.rolling pin handle, and the defendant, Matthew Hamlen. The jury

:02:31. > :02:35.was told that an expert found it likely that the DNA belonged to

:02:35. > :02:40.Matthew Hamlen. There was also DNA from other individuals. The

:02:40. > :02:46.prosecution says that mobile phone records place Matthew Hamlen in the

:02:47. > :02:56.vicinity of the cottage at the time. It also shows his movements towards

:02:57. > :03:00.

:03:00. > :03:09.his residence. Georgina Edmonds mobile-phone -- Georgina's mobile

:03:09. > :03:13.phone was found near a Tesco. His CCTV footage showed someone

:03:13. > :03:18.withdrawing money, they were told that that was Matthew Hamlen. He

:03:18. > :03:21.was known to have drug debt. Asked by detectives to be had been there,

:03:21. > :03:26.he said he might have been, and that he could have met Georgina

:03:26. > :03:32.Edmonds. Asked if he was drunk or drugged to? He says he could have

:03:32. > :03:39.been, he could not remember the day. Matthew Hamlen denies murdering

:03:39. > :03:44.Georgina Edmonds. The trial is expected to run for six weeks.

:03:44. > :03:50.Police have charged a 64-year-old man with a murder by a teenage girl

:03:50. > :03:56.from 45 years ago. Yolande Waddington was found the Strand and

:03:56. > :03:59.fashion -- found strangled in the village have been them. The

:03:59. > :04:07.defendant has been remanded in custody, to appear before

:04:07. > :04:15.magistrates. The boy is it that -- lawyers

:04:15. > :04:20.representing had said the dividend was found unconscious. A nurse

:04:20. > :04:25.should check to before seeing she had withdrawn a sentence. The

:04:25. > :04:30.officer on duty said she appeared to be well.

:04:30. > :04:36.This woman was 32, the inquest found that she was her fun and

:04:36. > :04:40.caring, but she was also a heroin addict. In May last year she was

:04:40. > :04:44.arrested for stealing clothes at this shop. The inquest heard that

:04:44. > :04:49.security guards held her in this alley, waiting for the police to

:04:49. > :04:54.arrive. When she was arrested, she told police officers that she was a

:04:54. > :04:57.heroin addict, and that she had needles in her bag. Today

:04:57. > :05:00.representatives of a family ask why she was not seen by a nurse when

:05:00. > :05:08.she was in custody, and why her blood pressure was not checked at

:05:08. > :05:13.the time. The threat of withdrawal were very real. The custody

:05:13. > :05:16.sergeant said that when she arrived, she did not appear to be under the

:05:17. > :05:24.influence of drugs. He also said that a nurse was available if

:05:24. > :05:28.requested. The sergeant was also asked why did not searcher, or

:05:28. > :05:30.question her after a cigarette lighter was found in her cell. The

:05:30. > :05:35.inquest was told there was a possibility that she could have

:05:35. > :05:39.hidden something else in the clothes, or body. The sergeant said

:05:39. > :05:45.he made a judgment that nothing had been found. More information is to

:05:45. > :05:50.emerge about the changes in procedures at the custody suite.

:05:50. > :05:56.Today the inquest heard that risk assessments have found new details,

:05:56. > :06:00.and hangovers are better placed. More than 200 fully grown cannabis

:06:00. > :06:06.plants have been seized by police at a house in Worthing. They say

:06:06. > :06:12.that drug it was recovered from property on Links Road, a 38-year-

:06:12. > :06:17.old local man was arrested on suspicion with intent to supply.

:06:17. > :06:24.Porn shock ordination mean that passengers had to wait more than 24

:06:24. > :06:28.hours before getting off on a ferry. That is a finding on inquiry on the

:06:28. > :06:32.blaze on the Commodore Clipper, as you ride in Portsmouth last year.

:06:32. > :06:36.Freight lorries had to be removed before passengers because access

:06:36. > :06:42.issues. Just imagine you are stuck on board

:06:42. > :06:46.a ferry, and you know there is a fire raging in the deck below? That

:06:46. > :06:49.is what happened to be 62 passengers on the Commodore Clipper.

:06:49. > :06:53.Nobody was injured, but there were serious questions about the way

:06:53. > :06:58.that this incident was dealt with. The Commodore Clipper was close to

:06:58. > :07:03.Portsmouth Harbour when a fire broke out on the vehicle deck. It

:07:04. > :07:10.started on a refrigerated trailer unit. The crew was fantastic. They

:07:10. > :07:17.got a light jacket on my child. When we got there, we assumed that

:07:17. > :07:21.it will be all right. Time tried a bit. The Marine Accident

:07:21. > :07:28.Investigation Branch found that the delay was made because have been

:07:28. > :07:34.effective co-ordination, and because of equipment defects. The

:07:34. > :07:38.MAIB wants to see other changes. We would like to seek changes in

:07:38. > :07:47.design and construction. The crew are better able to deal with what

:07:47. > :07:50.is going to happen. We need more changes, since the fire, to improve

:07:50. > :07:59.the performance, and to make sure that this does not happen again. We

:07:59. > :08:02.are confident that it'll make a big difference. The MAIB is says it is

:08:02. > :08:07.confident that they have taken action, and were unsure of nothing

:08:07. > :08:12.happening like that again. -- and will make sure that something like

:08:12. > :08:17.this did not happen again. There was a volunteer who helped

:08:17. > :08:23.the firefighters, he drove his vehicle on to the ship, and towed

:08:23. > :08:26.off the trailers. Thank you.

:08:26. > :08:31.Health staff are dealing with a measles outbreak in Brighton and

:08:31. > :08:35.Hove. They have been 42 cases of measles in the City this year,

:08:35. > :08:42.compared with four in the whole of last year. Reluctance by some

:08:42. > :08:50.parents to get the MMR jab is thought to be put to blame -- is

:08:50. > :08:55.thought to be to blame. The scare was wrongly linked to autism. We

:08:55. > :09:01.have done so much research on measles, it is one of the safest

:09:01. > :09:06.vaccines out there. That is a benefit. The message is simple, it

:09:06. > :09:14.is preventable, easily dealt with. Get your vaccinations. The number

:09:14. > :09:17.of people out to work in the staff has risen again. The figures show

:09:17. > :09:21.that 16,000 more people are employed in the south-east,

:09:21. > :09:25.compared with last quarter. In the south-west, 2000 more people are

:09:25. > :09:28.without jobs. In total for under 50,000 people are looking for work

:09:28. > :09:32.in the region. Businesses in Surrey say they fear

:09:32. > :09:40.for their future after losing up to half of their customers is the

:09:40. > :09:44.opening of the Hindhead Tunnel. It took 32,000 vehicles away from the

:09:44. > :09:54.nearby village. Traders say that the work by the Highways Agency to

:09:54. > :10:03.restore the old road, has taken away custom.

:10:03. > :10:06.The Pudsey Challenge begins! People livings of Anton could see

:10:07. > :10:10.private companies, charities, all volunteers running most of these

:10:10. > :10:16.services, that are provided by the council. The reconditioning plans

:10:16. > :10:20.are to be debated today, and put the city council and unions on a

:10:20. > :10:26.collision course. Our political Editor is he with me. More strife

:10:26. > :10:32.in the City, is this going to cause some more? The unions are furious.

:10:32. > :10:42.They see this as Royston Smith, the Conservative leader, pouring salt

:10:42. > :10:46.into the wombs. They are calling it his revenge. -- wounds. It is a we

:10:46. > :10:50.commissioning process. The council says it all mean every department

:10:50. > :10:56.has to do it. The staff will have to sign up for new contracts. They

:10:56. > :11:02.are competing with private companies. We have seen a number of

:11:02. > :11:07.companies go under. There are two companies that are featured in the

:11:07. > :11:11.contracts. It is a real gamble on the behalf of the council to go

:11:11. > :11:15.down this route. We would rather keep things in house, that

:11:15. > :11:20.residents know where they are, the services are accountable. Our

:11:20. > :11:26.members feel safe, in those terms and conditions. This is not the

:11:26. > :11:33.same as privatising. Some councils wanted to regulate different

:11:33. > :11:39.providers. It is much more subtle. Existing park staff would be

:11:39. > :11:46.encouraged to put up their own bid. They could get a fixed contract,

:11:46. > :11:51.may be higher wages! The council works with private companies

:11:51. > :11:57.already. We have looked at the service, we want to do it better.

:11:57. > :12:00.Maybe there will outsource, maybe the voluntary sector. -- and maybe

:12:00. > :12:06.we will outsource. We're looking for the best service, that is what

:12:06. > :12:11.we are going to do. Isn't this admission that the pay cuts have

:12:12. > :12:18.not worked? Some may say that. The council insists that is not true.

:12:18. > :12:25.They are still looking proficiency. -- for a efficiencies. As Sir

:12:25. > :12:29.Humphrey might say to the minister, it is a brave plan.

:12:29. > :12:33.Southampton hospital is taking part a project to reduce violence. Staff

:12:33. > :12:42.have been involved in finding out what to do when incidents occur.

:12:42. > :12:45.The one year-long study into patients' behaviour will put up.

:12:45. > :12:49.Their try to defuse potential problems.

:12:49. > :12:54.It was a frightening and life- threatening attack in Bournemouth,

:12:54. > :12:59.it left a victim fighting grows like a 21 and knife wounds. The

:12:59. > :13:09.victim was not a human, that a dog. Fortunately this is a story with a

:13:09. > :13:10.

:13:30. > :13:36.of blood in the bathroom. operation -- to repair the injuries

:13:36. > :13:41.took two hours. The hospital staff described it as the worst they had

:13:41. > :13:48.ever seen. There was blood all over the place, but particularly the

:13:48. > :13:54.diaphragm was a concern and the pancreas. Dempsey is showing he

:13:54. > :14:01.would be fazed by the ordeal. still a bit concerned at times.

:14:01. > :14:09.Dempsey is still Dempsey. He still wants his kisses and cuddles! He

:14:09. > :14:16.still want love. He should be very proud of himself. You are a fighter,

:14:16. > :14:26.on to, darling? The police is looking for witnesses, but Dempsey

:14:27. > :14:31.The pilot's logbook of arguably the most famous British fighter pilot

:14:31. > :14:34.of the Second World War went under the hammer today. The book records

:14:34. > :14:36.details of the crash near Reading which resulted in Sir Douglas Bader

:14:36. > :14:39.losing his legs. Bader's subsequent exploits in the Battle of Britain

:14:39. > :14:42.ensured it's value. It fetched more than twenty three thousand pounds

:14:42. > :14:51.at auction today, and Bader himself would be delighted that it's

:14:51. > :14:56.staying in Britain. Sarah Holmes was in the saleroom. The most

:16:05. > :16:09.not raise quite as much as was anticipated. But its vendor says

:16:09. > :16:19.that he is happy it is going to a good home. I know a little of his

:16:33. > :16:36.unique... Really is unique. We have A familiar figure is back in

:16:36. > :16:38.football in North Hampshire. The appointment of Spencer Day as the

:16:38. > :16:41.new manager of non-league Farnborough was pretty low-key,

:16:41. > :16:44.unlike his first appearance in the area. Spencer - then under his

:16:44. > :16:47.previous name of Spencer Trethewy - stepped in at the age of 19 to help

:16:47. > :16:50.save Farnborough's rivals Aldershot from closure in 1990. He lasted

:16:50. > :16:53.only three months on the board, and was subsequently found guilty of

:16:53. > :16:55.fraud. He's spent the last four years forging a new career for

:16:55. > :17:05.himself managing non-league Chertsey Town. And he's now

:17:05. > :17:10.

:17:10. > :17:14.replaced Garry Haylock in the Farnborough hot seat. I am not

:17:14. > :17:21.particularly proud of what has happened before, but I have made it

:17:21. > :17:25.clear that it is everyone is entitled to their opinion. It

:17:26. > :17:30.happened a very long time ago, and I think people deserved second

:17:30. > :17:32.chances, and I have earned a second chance. We did ask Spencer Day for

:17:32. > :17:36.a television interview, but he politely declined the request. You

:17:36. > :17:39.can hear that full radio interview on the BBC Surrey website. The

:17:39. > :17:42.Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet says he wants to play a

:17:42. > :17:45.key role in developing the club's stars of the future. Having moved

:17:45. > :17:48.into the Amex Stadium this season, the Seagulls are now looking to

:17:48. > :17:50.push forward new training facilities. Albion are due to

:17:50. > :17:53.announce plans next month that will hopefully help them achieve Academy

:17:53. > :17:56.status. That would move their youth development set-up in line with

:17:56. > :18:01.Premier League clubs, and it's something Poyet is excited about

:18:01. > :18:09.being a part of. It is too easy to say that we have a great academy,

:18:09. > :18:13.so that means the chairman is going to spend. The pictures look great.

:18:13. > :18:19.But then you will not be able to create the player's right away. It

:18:19. > :18:25.is important for me to have that possibility of indolence --

:18:25. > :18:28.influencing something within the football club. Southampton have

:18:28. > :18:31.opened talks with Celtic, about signing defender Jos Hooiveld from

:18:31. > :18:34.the Glasgow club on a permanent basis. Hooiveld has impressed since

:18:34. > :18:36.moving to St Mary's on loan in August. The two clubs are

:18:36. > :18:39.discussing a full transfer in the January window, when the Dutchman's

:18:39. > :18:43.loan spell ends. Celtic paid 1.8 million pounds for the player two

:18:43. > :18:47.years ago. One other football line - Aldershot Town have signed

:18:47. > :18:50.defender Jamie Day on loan from Crawley Town until the New Year.

:18:50. > :18:53.The leading boats are heading into the final stages of the Transat

:18:53. > :18:55.race, with Gosport's Alex Thomson still lying in second place, with

:18:55. > :18:58.his partner Guillermo Altadil. Aboard Hugo Boss, they're currently

:18:58. > :19:00.sailing between Dominica and Costa Rica. They're just under 150

:19:00. > :19:03.nautical miles behind the leading boat of Jean Pierre Dick and

:19:03. > :19:06.Jeremie Beyou. Alex and Guillermo endured a night with only two

:19:06. > :19:09.hours' sleep between them, as they look to claw back the French boat's

:19:09. > :19:14.lead in the Caribbean. The winners are likely to reach the finish

:19:14. > :19:16.early on Friday. Surrey and England fast bowler Jade Dernbach has

:19:16. > :19:19.signed a deal to play in the Australian Twenty20 competition

:19:19. > :19:22.over Christmas. Dernbach has joined the Melbourne Stars as an overseas

:19:22. > :19:25.player for the Big Bash tournament. He'll be a team-mate of Shane Warne,

:19:25. > :19:35.who's come out of retirement to play in the competition. Sussex's

:19:35. > :19:37.

:19:37. > :19:42.Luke Wright is Melbourne's other overseas signing. From the big cash

:19:42. > :19:45.-- from the Big bash to the big cash! Children in Need is on Friday,

:19:45. > :19:48.but lots of you are already raising money for this great cause. The

:19:48. > :19:52.Kings Theatre in Southsea held a special concert for the bear with

:19:52. > :19:54.Same Difference as the headline act and our very own Alexis Green went

:19:54. > :20:04.to help, meeting some of the fundraisers and the performers who

:20:04. > :20:10.

:20:10. > :20:20.had donated their time. The concert raised over 6000. That is

:20:21. > :20:31.absolutely Fabulous. We are going right through till Friday night. We

:20:31. > :20:31.

:20:31. > :20:34.will be in Beaulieu on Friday. We will be in our overalls! Onto our

:20:34. > :20:37.own Pudsey Challenge, in which we split eight of our presenters and

:20:37. > :20:40.reporters into two teams and gave them an arduous task - rather in

:20:40. > :20:44.the style of the Apprentice. Over the next three nights, we'll be

:22:53. > :22:59.lot of strong personalities here. They have got some ideas. At the

:23:03. > :23:08.going to enjoy the ice cream, but I am not sure how much they are going

:23:09. > :23:15.to sell. We are looking for Smarties. We are looking for those
