:00:14. > :00:17.Hello. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:

:00:17. > :00:26.Don't make the same mistake. A sister's drink drive appeal after

:00:26. > :00:28.her brother's death. The secret recording which

:00:28. > :00:34.prosecutors says shows the man accused of killing Georgina Edmonds

:00:34. > :00:35.tried to manufacture an alibi. A no-go zone. The suburb where

:00:35. > :00:38.buses won't run because of violent attacks.

:00:38. > :00:44.And touch-screen technology. The rare monkeys being put through

:00:44. > :00:54.their paces. This is entirely at the whim of the animals as to

:00:54. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :01:01.whether they want to come in and take part in the studies.

:01:01. > :01:08.Learn from my brother's death. Those were the words today of a

:01:08. > :01:10.woman whose brother died in a drink driving accident. She spoke as one

:01:10. > :01:13.of our police forces launched a shop a drink driver campaign.

:01:14. > :01:16.Police forces in the south are hoping to see a continued reduction

:01:16. > :01:19.in drink driving this Christmas after the number of motorists

:01:19. > :01:22.arrested across the South last year fell by 121, compared to the year

:01:23. > :01:26.before. In 2010, in Hampshire 247 drivers were found to be over the

:01:26. > :01:32.limit or failed to give a breath test, 62 fewer than in 2009. In

:01:32. > :01:39.Surrey, 50 were caught, down 56. However, in Wiltshire 111 motorists

:01:39. > :01:43.were arrested, an increase of 55. That is after officers stopped an

:01:43. > :01:46.extra three and a half thousand motorists. In a moment, we will

:01:46. > :01:51.hear from a driving safety campaign group. But first, our reporter has

:01:51. > :01:58.been to meet a woman still living with the effects of drink driving.

:01:58. > :02:06.He had a heart of gold. He was kind and generous. He was exceptionally

:02:06. > :02:11.popular. We did not realise how popular he was until he died.

:02:11. > :02:17.is a difficult day. Three years ago, her brother drove home after a

:02:17. > :02:21.night out. He had been drinking. He lost control of his car, crashed

:02:21. > :02:28.into a fence and died in some way. I don't think you ever come to

:02:28. > :02:34.terms with it. There are questions unanswered. Why? Why would you be

:02:34. > :02:38.so irresponsible? The impact has been devastating. Not just that

:02:38. > :02:47.Christmas, but every Christmas from now on there is a void. Something

:02:47. > :02:53.missing. Last Christmas, Sussex Police arrested 176 drink-drivers.

:02:53. > :02:58.Now they're trying something new to try to cut VAT number. They say

:02:58. > :03:08.that if you see someone who has had too much to drink and they're about

:03:08. > :03:10.

:03:10. > :03:16.to get into our car, at text them on 65,999. They will send a police

:03:16. > :03:22.officer out to investigate. impact of drink-driving is massive.

:03:22. > :03:28.Help us solve this problem. We want to stop people from doing this and

:03:28. > :03:32.catch them. She hopes people will learn from her brother's deaths.

:03:32. > :03:40.You never think it will happen to you. We would never have thought it

:03:40. > :03:44.would happen to Douglas. But things do happen. You're not invincible.

:03:44. > :03:48.If you take irresponsible measures, sometimes the consequences can be

:03:48. > :03:52.devastating. Shortly before we came on air, I

:03:52. > :03:55.spoke to Ellen Booth from the road safety group Brake. I began by

:03:55. > :04:03.asking for her reaction to the fact the number of people caught drink

:04:03. > :04:07.driving has been dropping overall. Well, hopefully that means the

:04:07. > :04:11.message is getting through. What I would say is that even with this

:04:12. > :04:16.good news we still have a huge number of people who are dying each

:04:16. > :04:24.year on our road because of drivers over the drink-drive limit. Last

:04:24. > :04:28.year, he does 250 people are. It is estimated that a further 65 died

:04:28. > :04:33.because of drivers who had been drinking alcohol but were under the

:04:33. > :04:38.drink Clyde -- under the drink- drive limit. At positive result

:04:38. > :04:43.there, but Mauny to be done. Police are asking for people to shop and

:04:43. > :04:47.drink driver. Do you believe that works? We would be in favour of

:04:47. > :04:53.that. The reason is, although it sounds like quite a severe thing to

:04:53. > :04:58.ask people to do, drink driving is a serious crime that does lead to

:04:58. > :05:05.the deaths of innocent road-users. It is a serious crime. For that

:05:05. > :05:11.reason, we would support that. looking at the figures from police

:05:11. > :05:15.forces, it seems quite an ad hoc basis. Some police forces are

:05:15. > :05:19.prioritising it and some are not. Do you think that works, each

:05:19. > :05:24.police force deciding itself was mad what we would like to see his

:05:24. > :05:29.traffic policing as one of the national policing priorities.

:05:29. > :05:33.would ensure there were enough traffic police on the roads to

:05:33. > :05:37.catch drink drivers and do all of the other things that they do. At

:05:37. > :05:42.the moment, different police forces give it a different level of

:05:43. > :05:49.priority depending on their budget and the way that they work. If it

:05:49. > :05:52.was a national policing priority, we think it would get better

:05:52. > :05:55.funding and there would be better work done across all of the police

:05:55. > :05:59.forces. Thank you. A court has heard how the man

:05:59. > :06:02.accused of the murder of Georgina Edmonds made a phone call to his

:06:02. > :06:04.mum asking for her to be his alibi. 33-year-old Matthew Hamlen from

:06:04. > :06:07.Bishopstoke is accused of killing the pensioner at her home in

:06:07. > :06:15.Brambridge three years ago he denies murder. Our Home Affairs

:06:15. > :06:22.Correspondent reports. Georgina Edmonds was found dead in

:06:22. > :06:32.January 2008. She was 77. She had been beaten to death with a current

:06:32. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:40.owner marble rolling penned near Eastleigh. A secret recording shows

:06:40. > :06:44.a man accused of her murder trying to find an alibi. The court heard a

:06:44. > :06:50.recording between are the man and his mother. He said, I think I

:06:50. > :06:56.might have an alibi. I might have been at a friend's House. But he

:06:56. > :07:01.couldn't remember. Today, the friend told the court she had not

:07:01. > :07:06.known him at the time. In the same conversation, he told his mother,

:07:06. > :07:10.it is a witch hunt. I will have to go to court to clear my name. Today,

:07:10. > :07:17.the court heard from people who had known Matthew Hamlen at the time of

:07:17. > :07:21.the murder. The jury was told he regularly used cocaine. He was

:07:21. > :07:28.described as the usually placid man. Though one former friend said he

:07:28. > :07:32.did have a temper. One woman said she had met him on a night out a

:07:32. > :07:36.week after the murder. She said they had spoken about who killed

:07:36. > :07:44.Georgina Edmonds. She said she had told them the police will catch the

:07:44. > :07:49.killer. She said that Matthew Hammond seemed agitated and

:07:49. > :07:59.defensive and said they do not always. He denies murder. The case

:07:59. > :08:19.

:08:19. > :08:22.continues. They are plans that will quadruple

:08:22. > :08:25.the number of homes in their village. So it is no surprise that

:08:25. > :08:28.residents of Deepcut in Surrey turned out in force this afternoon

:08:28. > :08:31.to air their views on the proposals. The homes will be built on the

:08:31. > :08:33.Princess Royal army barracks which the Ministry of Defence is vacating

:08:33. > :08:35.in two years' time. Most people accept development is inevitable.

:08:35. > :08:37.But there is real concern over the detail.

:08:37. > :08:40.The plans could change the community forever. When the army

:08:40. > :08:43.leaves the site, it will fleet -- it will free up 100 head tears for

:08:43. > :08:47.development. Under current plans, 40 will be built on and the rest

:08:47. > :08:55.will be open space. There are strong views. Am an attractive

:08:55. > :09:00.village could easily be spoilt ways through traffic. We want to make

:09:00. > :09:08.sure the traffic infrastructure is adequate. If it is not, life will

:09:08. > :09:13.become more problematic. Three times more so. Campaigners already

:09:13. > :09:23.have got the council to carry out an independent study about traffic.

:09:23. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:29.There is another issue in their sights. The proposal shows a

:09:29. > :09:36.supermarket for a 3,000 square metres. That is far greater than

:09:36. > :09:44.for the needs Ford just Distillers. That will bring even more traffic.

:09:44. > :09:54.Today, they were wanting comments about the issue. In a statement,

:09:54. > :09:59.

:09:59. > :10:09.A formal planning application will be submitted in the spring.

:10:09. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:13.Building could start by 2016. Still to come in this evening's

:10:13. > :10:21.South Today: The Sussex and England all-rounder who has been dealing

:10:21. > :10:24.with a testing delivery off the field.

:10:24. > :10:27.A row has broken out over plans to expand Brighton and Hove Albion's

:10:27. > :10:30.AMEX stadium in Falmer. The heated exchange took place on the social

:10:30. > :10:33.network Twitter between Green Councillor Jason Kitcat and the

:10:33. > :10:36.former Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council Lord Steve Bassam. The

:10:36. > :10:45.two locked horns over proposals for an extra 8,000 seats at the new

:10:45. > :10:51.stadium. Hearers what the debate is all

:10:51. > :10:56.about. The expansion of this new stadium. With plans to build an

:10:56. > :11:00.extra 1,000 parking spaces and community centre nearby, parking

:11:00. > :11:04.that might have helped football fans at the weekend. Having those

:11:04. > :11:09.extra spaces would be an important part of the application to increase

:11:09. > :11:17.capacity at the stadium by a further 8,000. But on Twitter, the

:11:17. > :11:22.former Labour leader of the council accuses Jason Kitcat and other

:11:22. > :11:25.green councillors of trying to block the expansion fans --

:11:25. > :11:35.expansion plans by blocking the extra car-parking spaces being

:11:35. > :11:55.

:11:55. > :12:01.The Football Club has been a major success story. They have a new

:12:01. > :12:05.stadium and want to expand further. If these car-parking spaces are

:12:05. > :12:10.blocked, it means the option of expanding the stadium is more

:12:10. > :12:16.difficult and, placated. original application had provision

:12:16. > :12:20.for parking in some areas. It did not work out. The Academy decided

:12:20. > :12:25.not to provide debt and also at the university campus. We're trying to

:12:25. > :12:35.find alternative ways to deal with transport issue is. Fans say

:12:35. > :12:45.expansion is needed at their new stadium. Every league game has sold

:12:45. > :12:52.

:12:52. > :12:55.out every game. There is a waiting list for 200 season tickets.

:12:55. > :12:58.South of England Conservative MPs have been piling the pressure on

:12:58. > :13:01.the Prime Minister on the eve of his crunch trip to Brussels. David

:13:01. > :13:04.Cameron faced a volley of concerned questions from Euro-sceptic MPs on

:13:04. > :13:06.his own side. Chichester's Andrew Tyrie said even the perception of a

:13:06. > :13:10.European assault on the UK's financial services industry would

:13:10. > :13:15.be the most likely thing to unite the House of Commons. Mr Cameron

:13:15. > :13:22.was also challenged by two other Conservative MPs from the south.

:13:22. > :13:25.Why is my right honourable friend supporting a policy of fiscal

:13:25. > :13:33.unification for the eurozone states, which, if it happens, will

:13:33. > :13:43.undoubtedly lead to the creation of a dangerously undemocratic single

:13:43. > :13:44.

:13:44. > :13:49.government for those countries? should be seeking changes in the

:13:49. > :13:53.laws of emigration, employment and fishing rights instead. In order to

:13:53. > :13:55.support our economy. Hampshire Constabulary has billed

:13:55. > :13:58.the Metropolitan Police 705,000 for deploying officers to the

:13:58. > :14:01.capital during the summer riots. Specialist public order teams

:14:01. > :14:06.provided backup to the Met for more than a month in August after

:14:06. > :14:10.violence flared up. It also hopes to secure more than 500,000 from

:14:10. > :14:13.the Home Office, but has yet to receive any guarantee of payment.

:14:13. > :14:20.The force, which covers Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, needs to

:14:20. > :14:22.save up to 50 million by 2015. A bus company has been forced to

:14:22. > :14:28.withdraw night services through a Bournemouth estate after its

:14:28. > :14:31.vehicles were pelted five times in the past month. The company has

:14:31. > :14:34.stopped running certain services through West Howe after 6pm at

:14:34. > :14:40.night. The Yellow buses were damaged and windows were smashed

:14:40. > :14:42.while passengers were on-board. The company say the attacks are highly

:14:42. > :14:51.dangerous and potentially life threatening. Our reporter has been

:14:51. > :14:56.following this story, and joins us from Bournemouth tonight.

:14:56. > :15:01.It is still not clear tonight who is responsible for these attacks.

:15:01. > :15:08.The result is that the buses are staying in the depot, instead of

:15:08. > :15:15.out on the roads of the West Howe estate. A lot of people use these

:15:15. > :15:19.bosses, so -- a lot of people use these buses, so their withdrawal is

:15:19. > :15:24.having quite an impact. Since the end of November, the

:15:24. > :15:29.evening buses on this estate have been under attack with missiles

:15:29. > :15:39.aimed at windows. One passenger was covered in broken glass last week.

:15:39. > :15:39.

:15:39. > :15:45.This is a last resort. People rely on as. We understand that. To take

:15:45. > :15:51.a vehicle and service out of an area affect the community.

:15:51. > :15:57.Unfortunately, this is a safety issue. We needed to do it. People

:15:57. > :16:06.depend on at the bus service year. The withdrawal after 6pm is a big

:16:06. > :16:12.inconvenience. I have teenage children who are out in the evening.

:16:12. > :16:21.They will now have to walk. Quite scary to think that you have to get

:16:21. > :16:26.off early and walk home. It is an inconvenience. I use the bus a lot.

:16:26. > :16:32.The bus company have been speaking to the police and council officials.

:16:32. > :16:42.Drivers are concerned. They all agree this has to be resolved

:16:42. > :16:42.

:16:42. > :16:51.quickly. The potential injuries could be catastrophic. There could

:16:51. > :16:57.be anybody from an elderly person to a young child on a bus. If a

:16:57. > :17:05.brick hits them on the head, at the injuries could be fatal. This

:17:05. > :17:08.afternoon, Dorset Police said that they have been visiting schools and

:17:08. > :17:12.explaining this serious damage that can be caused to vehicles on the

:17:12. > :17:17.road. Tonight, there has been a strong message from the borough

:17:17. > :17:22.council. They have said that they will take action on the tenancies

:17:22. > :17:29.on families involved if the evidence warrants it. While the

:17:29. > :17:33.investigation continues, the buses will stay in the depot each night

:17:33. > :17:36.for now. Funding for nine libraries in

:17:36. > :17:39.Dorset will be stopped, despite a court ruling that similar plans in

:17:39. > :17:41.Somerset were unlawful. 800,0000 is to be taken from the county

:17:41. > :17:44.council's libraries budget. It has led to protests in Dorchester. The

:17:44. > :17:54.council says it is confident it won't face a similar legal

:17:54. > :17:56.

:17:56. > :17:59.challenge. Offenders have been brought in to

:17:59. > :18:01.help renovate an historic fort in West Sussex. As part of the

:18:01. > :18:04.Community Payback Scheme, offenders are carrying out work at Shoreham

:18:04. > :18:07.Fort. It was built in 1857 to protect the Sussex coast against

:18:07. > :18:16.any French invasion. The offenders have been providing free labour for

:18:16. > :18:19.the volunteer group that has been restoring the local landmark.

:18:19. > :18:22.Take a group of monkeys, put them in front of computer touch-screens

:18:22. > :18:24.and study their reactions. That is what a group of researchers from

:18:24. > :18:27.Portsmouth University have been doing at Hampshire's Marwell Zoo.

:18:27. > :18:33.They have opened a new primate study centre. Our reporter has been

:18:33. > :18:38.to see the animals in action. The there is a new addition to

:18:38. > :18:40.Monkey Island at Marwell Zoo. These scientists from Portsmouth

:18:40. > :18:45.University have introduced touch- screen technology to try to find

:18:45. > :18:49.out about the memory, communication and emotions of these monkeys. It

:18:49. > :18:54.is hoped the studies will give a greater insight into the mind of

:18:54. > :18:58.this species. The animals have been in training for six months,

:18:58. > :19:03.learning a rather sophisticated game of snap. It is entirely at the

:19:03. > :19:11.whim of the animals as to whether they want to take part in the study.

:19:11. > :19:17.That is vital. The monkeys have access to a touch screen. When

:19:17. > :19:26.activated, the computer generates three new images. The monkey has to

:19:26. > :19:29.select matching images to receive food as a reward. It was quite

:19:29. > :19:35.challenging at first. Once they understand how to use the screen,

:19:36. > :19:40.there is a big potential for us and also for the animals. OK, he wants

:19:40. > :19:50.me to focus on the task! Soon, the monkeys will move on to facial

:19:50. > :19:55.expressions to see whether they can recognise different moods. Now we

:19:55. > :19:59.can try to work out how monkeys interpret facial expressions and

:19:59. > :20:04.social signals. That is very important. The initial findings

:20:04. > :20:10.could be published in the spring. The research will continue as

:20:10. > :20:17.scientists tried to find out how monkeys respond to sound and

:20:17. > :20:22.different social situations. How interesting! Monkeys in front

:20:22. > :20:31.of a computer screen. There is a joke there, but I will not go

:20:31. > :20:39.there! Now the sport. Special delivery for cricket coming up

:20:39. > :20:42.later? Look forward to that one.

:20:42. > :20:44.Portsmouth Football Club will be on the agenda when the Football League

:20:44. > :20:47.hold their monthly board meeting in London tomorrow. A League spokesman

:20:47. > :20:50.confirmed today that Pompey's on- going financial issues would be

:20:50. > :20:52.discussed. He declined to comment though on whether the club could

:20:52. > :20:54.face a points penalty, after their parent company went into

:20:54. > :20:57.administration. It is understood Andrew Andronikou has already been

:20:57. > :20:59.contacted by interested parties, in his role as administrator of

:20:59. > :21:02.Pompey's owners CSI. It has been a frustrating few

:21:02. > :21:05.months for Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright. A knee injury curtailed his

:21:05. > :21:07.2011 season, and cost him his England place. But having recovered

:21:07. > :21:10.from surgery, he's flown out to take part in the re-vamped

:21:10. > :21:18.Australian Twenty20 Big Bash tournament. And he has also been

:21:18. > :21:25.dealing with a testing delivery of a different kind.

:21:25. > :21:30.Things have changed in this household in the last few weeks.

:21:30. > :21:36.This cricketer is now a father. have achieved some amazing things

:21:36. > :21:41.in cricket, but nothing is better than seeing your son for the first

:21:41. > :21:46.time and holding her. However, he is also embarking into unknown

:21:46. > :21:53.territory on the field. After a knee injury, he will head to

:21:53. > :21:59.Melbourne to play under Shane Warne. This is the first time that this

:21:59. > :22:04.has become such a large franchise. By finger will be excited for

:22:04. > :22:11.everyone. I am sure a lot of people were come to watch this. While the

:22:11. > :22:18.Surrey bowler has been cementing his plays in v England one-day side,

:22:18. > :22:28.others are prepared to be patient. I am focusing on trying to get back

:22:28. > :22:29.

:22:29. > :22:34.to fitness. This is a good competition to play end. If I

:22:34. > :22:43.compete, it puts me in contention. Right now, I am trying to enjoy my

:22:43. > :22:49.cricket and stay fit. Little baby Joshua is said to be heading out to

:22:49. > :22:52.Australia soon to catch up with his father.

:22:52. > :22:55.Staying with Sussex, and wicketkeeper batsman Matt Prior has

:22:55. > :22:58.been awarded a benefit year by the county in 2012. The former Brighton

:22:58. > :23:01.College student made his first- class debut for Sussex in 2001, and

:23:01. > :23:04.helped the county win their first ever County Championship title two
