:00:02. > :00:05.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's

:00:05. > :00:15.programme: an investigation's underway after four people were

:00:15. > :00:16.

:00:16. > :00:19.injured at a fireworks display. $NEWLINE A tough time for traders,

:00:19. > :00:29.shoppers tighten their purse strings despite offers to tempt

:00:29. > :00:29.

:00:30. > :00:33.them in. 40 years young, the Sussex charity

:00:33. > :00:34.which has helped preserve sight in some of the poorest parts of the

:00:35. > :00:41.world. Full metal racket, the young rock

:00:41. > :00:51.band who are living the dream and the surprise that stunned them all.

:00:51. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:01.The girls have been following me Spectators were left stunned after

:01:01. > :01:04.an accident at a fireworks display in Dorset last night. Around six

:01:04. > :01:10.rockets shot into the crowd at the event at Blandford Forum after a

:01:10. > :01:14.box of fireworks malfunctioned. Four people suffered minor injuries,

:01:14. > :01:18.but no-one was seriously hurt. Investigations into how it happened

:01:18. > :01:28.have begun. Roger Finn has been speaking to a woman who caught the

:01:28. > :01:29.

:01:29. > :01:34.whole thing on camera. It was meant to be the grand finale

:01:34. > :01:38.to the Christmas Festival. Hundreds of people, including dunk children

:01:38. > :01:44.gathered in the market place for a fireworks display. Set off from the

:01:44. > :01:54.roof of a bank, Suzanne Patrick was phoning -- filming on her phone

:01:54. > :01:55.

:01:55. > :02:01.when things went badly wrong. dangerous, I am a bit scared. It

:02:01. > :02:06.was just Celtic, everybody was running and screaming. -- screaming.

:02:06. > :02:11.Still scared, still shaking at 6 o'clock this morning when I got up

:02:11. > :02:15.for work. Never experienced anything in my life like it. You

:02:15. > :02:20.wondered if it would hit you, thinking somebody would get heard.

:02:20. > :02:25.Once you light then you cannot stop it. They were just shooting down at

:02:25. > :02:35.people, down the alleyway where kids were. I turned my back, I have

:02:35. > :02:39.no idea how anybody didn't get hurt. The instant is being investigated

:02:39. > :02:42.by Health and Safety Executive's and by Dorset trading standards.

:02:42. > :02:47.Dorset Police said in the absence of malicious intent they will not

:02:47. > :02:50.be initiating a formal investigation, today the first full

:02:50. > :02:54.organisers said their thoughts were with those affected by the incident.

:02:54. > :02:59.They also said it would be inappropriate to offer any further

:02:59. > :03:03.comment until an investigation is complete. They spoke of a display

:03:03. > :03:09.malfunction, and it is believed that the fireworks were known as a

:03:09. > :03:13.cake garage. All lit by a single fused. It was meant to be the

:03:13. > :03:17.happiest time of the Year, everybody celebrating. It's turned

:03:17. > :03:20.into a disaster. $NEWLINE Christmas is just ten days away,

:03:20. > :03:23.traditionally the busiest time of year for shops. But figures

:03:23. > :03:26.released today appear to show many of us are keeping a tight rein on

:03:26. > :03:29.our finances in the current economic climate. Official figures

:03:29. > :03:33.show that retail sales fell by 0.4 per cent last month compared to

:03:33. > :03:36.October figures. It brings to an end two months of growth. The

:03:36. > :03:39.Office for National Statistics said that much of the decline was caused

:03:39. > :03:45.by consumers cutting back on luxury items such as computers, mobile

:03:45. > :03:48.phones, watches and jewellery. The drop is despite a large number of

:03:48. > :03:52.special offers from retailers in an attempt to drum up pre-Christmas

:03:52. > :03:58.trade. Concluding our look this week at the economy, our reporter

:03:58. > :04:01.Alastair Fee is at the Oracle shopping Centre in Reading tonight.

:04:01. > :04:11.Alastair.$$NEWLINE The family of a serving soldier who died after a

:04:11. > :04:13.

:04:13. > :04:17.fight outside a Portsmouth Service. Footfall is up by 2.6 per

:04:17. > :04:26.cent. They say it is because it has created an all round shopping

:04:26. > :04:32.experience. His it is all about choice, how we shop and Wear. The

:04:32. > :04:37.competition for our cash is greater than ever. At home, starting

:04:37. > :04:41.Christmas shopping online. She counsels presents for her husband

:04:41. > :04:46.and two young children. But to no shops still have their place.

:04:46. > :04:52.look to see what is available then I will go and try something on.

:04:52. > :04:57.That is how I will use it, to see what a shop has got. If I look for

:04:57. > :05:02.dresses, I will look it up and see if I like it. Then I will go in to

:05:02. > :05:10.try it on. The way we shop has changed, many town centres now

:05:10. > :05:14.dominated by high street names. Easy parking and bars near by. This

:05:14. > :05:19.shopping centre is one such success story. We are enjoying an

:05:19. > :05:24.increasing number of people coming, we saw an increase of about 2.6 per

:05:24. > :05:28.cent last month and we have seen about 1.1 million people coming to

:05:28. > :05:33.our shopping centre over the last three weeks. That means they may

:05:33. > :05:38.not be spending more, per head, but we are seeing more shoppers.

:05:38. > :05:43.story is different on readings High Street, especially for independent

:05:43. > :05:48.retailers. This has been trading for more than 100 years. It is

:05:48. > :05:53.quite challenging at the moment, quite tight. I don't think it will

:05:53. > :05:58.improve over the next few years. It will be challenging for five years.

:05:58. > :06:07.If she has the time and money, a trip to the shopping centre can be

:06:07. > :06:12.a whole day out. It is this experience retailers want to create.

:06:12. > :06:17.I am joined now by the retail experts from a Reading University.

:06:17. > :06:20.Why are these big centres bearing better than market towns?

:06:20. > :06:24.Competition is cut-throat through many centres, places like Reading

:06:24. > :06:29.are putting lots of investments into getting people then. Putting

:06:29. > :06:33.on music, entertainment for children to draw people in and to

:06:33. > :06:37.give them more than just the shops. They are getting people in but they

:06:37. > :06:42.are not spending the money. Football is well up, but the

:06:42. > :06:46.question is whether people will convert that into spending. So many

:06:46. > :06:50.discounts and sells to attract people in, retailers are trying

:06:50. > :06:54.their hardest to get people in in the hope that will translate to

:06:54. > :06:59.spending. How big are all of the attractions to see around us?

:06:59. > :07:04.People singing under the Christmas tree, people queuing up to see

:07:04. > :07:07.Father Christmas. Is that something the market towns could learn?

:07:07. > :07:12.have seen that market towns are under more and more pressure to

:07:12. > :07:17.compete, to give people variety and reasons to go to smaller centres

:07:17. > :07:21.with fewer shops. What we see in places like Reading is an attempt

:07:21. > :07:26.to draw people into a big centre. Market towns could learn from this

:07:26. > :07:31.and could attract people. Giving them more than just the shops.

:07:31. > :07:37.Thank you. We won't get a final picture on how and where we are

:07:37. > :07:41.spending money until retail figures are out in the New Year.

:07:41. > :07:44.The family of a serving soldier who died after a fight outside a

:07:45. > :07:50.Portsmouth nightclub say they are frustrated and angry that the case

:07:50. > :07:53.was dropped by police Matt Brooks died five days after he was punched

:07:53. > :07:56.to the ground by twenty two year old Dean Aldcroft from Portsmouth.

:07:56. > :07:58.Mr Aldcroft said he was acting in self-defence. Today a Southampton

:07:58. > :08:03.coroner recorded an open verdict, saying there was not enough CCTV

:08:03. > :08:05.footage or reliable evidence to come to any other conclusion. Metal

:08:05. > :08:08.thieves have put lives at risk after attacking three ambulances in

:08:08. > :08:14.Reading, cutting off their exhaust pipes to steal the catalytic

:08:14. > :08:18.converters underneath. The vehicles are used for a range of emergency

:08:18. > :08:21.medical services. But they're now off the road for twenty four hours.

:08:21. > :08:24.Aside from the cost of repair, there's concern that more money

:08:24. > :08:34.will need to be spent improving security in the compound where

:08:34. > :08:36.

:08:36. > :08:42.they're stored. Of all things to steal from, why in ambulance?

:08:42. > :08:48.Crippling the emergency services. If we don't today 999 work, what we

:08:48. > :08:53.do is critical and vital for the hospitals. For those vehicles, it

:08:53. > :08:56.has really impacted our ability to support critically ill people who

:08:56. > :08:58.need transport. The future of Hampshire's Rose Bowl

:08:58. > :09:01.cricket ground is being discussed at a meeting this evening.

:09:01. > :09:04.Eastleigh Borough Council is considering buying the site for six

:09:04. > :09:07.and a half million pounds and then leasing it back to Hampshire County

:09:07. > :09:10.Cricket Club. But local businessman Moez, who operates the hotel next

:09:10. > :09:16.to it, says it's unfair. The council says it'll benefit the

:09:16. > :09:19.local economy. And our political editor Peter

:09:19. > :09:22.Henley is at tonight's meeting, and will be reporting on the outcome in

:09:22. > :09:27.our late news at 10:25. One of the triplet snow leopards

:09:27. > :09:31.born earlier this year at Marwell Wildlife has died suddenly. The zoo

:09:31. > :09:33.says the unexpected death of Kitana is a very big loss and will have a

:09:33. > :09:40.detrimental impact on their breeding programme, although her

:09:40. > :09:43.two brothers are still well. Snow leopards are endangered in the wild,

:09:43. > :09:50.and those bred in captivity are playing a crucial role in attempts

:09:50. > :09:59.Still to come in this evening's South Today, given the expected

:10:00. > :10:05.stormy weather stay with us for Reham's forecast. Stormy times

:10:05. > :10:09.ahead, even some snow, I will be back with a full forecast late in

:10:09. > :10:13.the programme. Back in the 1960s Jean Wilson

:10:13. > :10:16.filmed the work of a charity she ran with her husband helping to

:10:16. > :10:19.restore sight to people in Africa and Asia. For decades the films lay

:10:19. > :10:22.forgotten in storage at Sightsavers headquarters in West Sussex. But

:10:22. > :10:24.over the past year the reels of film, and more shot by other

:10:24. > :10:29.cameramen, have been unearthed, digitised and restored to their

:10:29. > :10:39.former glory. And today for the first time in many years Lady Jean

:10:39. > :10:40.

:10:40. > :10:46.had the chance to see the pictures once again. Sean Killick reports.

:10:46. > :10:50.East Africa, 1963, and a group of blind women led to a treatment

:10:50. > :10:55.centre run by the will and Commonwealth Society for the Blind.

:10:55. > :11:00.A West Sussex charity now known as Sightsavers. Why and so gain a

:11:00. > :11:04.round of examination begins, any progress? Will an operation help?

:11:04. > :11:09.If watching these pictures for the first time in decades brings back

:11:10. > :11:17.many memories for Jean Wilson. outcome the patience to the village

:11:17. > :11:22.I was in. By bicycles, walking. Some walk a very long way to get to

:11:22. > :11:26.the eye camp. As you can see. Lady Wilson established a charity

:11:26. > :11:30.with her late husband who was blind from childhood. Their aim to

:11:30. > :11:36.restore sight to people in developing countries. 40 years ago

:11:36. > :11:41.the Queen opened the Centre, as part of the anniversary, reels of

:11:41. > :11:46.archive footage have been restored, months of painstaking work were

:11:46. > :11:53.staring -- restoring the footage in Chichester. To the delight of Lady

:11:53. > :11:58.Wilson. I am delighted to see how it has developed, starting back in

:11:58. > :12:03.1950 with minimal resources and sky high aspirations. It has developed

:12:03. > :12:08.steadily. Sightsavers is now one of the largest 50 charities in the

:12:08. > :12:13.country. Really exciting to see the old footage, we saw some of the

:12:13. > :12:18.teachers being trained on how to include Blind children in classes.

:12:18. > :12:24.Something we continue to do today. An incredibly important help for

:12:24. > :12:33.blind children to get to school. Lady Wilson helps the restored

:12:33. > :12:36.footage will help in the years From the 1960s, we're going back

:12:36. > :12:39.even further, this time to 1942. A corner of West Sussex was

:12:40. > :12:42.transformed today while a film crew moved in to recreate a world war

:12:42. > :12:45.two mission briefing. Fact Not Fiction Films is based in Horsham

:12:46. > :12:49.and earlier this month they asked South Today to help them find some

:12:49. > :12:59.extras. Danielle Glavin went to see if any of our viewers became stars

:12:59. > :12:59.

:12:59. > :13:07.of the screen. A little pace of the past brought back to life for a

:13:07. > :13:14.film. This is the set for shady lady, a documentary drama about

:13:14. > :13:21.World War to being made by a company from Horsham. They have

:13:21. > :13:25.already shot most of the film overseas. -- World War two. We try

:13:25. > :13:30.to employ local people as a company, and we want to involve the

:13:30. > :13:35.community. You can only make films like this for community spirit.

:13:35. > :13:40.Many extras came forward after an appeal from South Today. I'm from

:13:40. > :13:45.Portsmouth, I saw this advertised on television, I wanted to be part

:13:45. > :13:51.of it. It is good fun, could insight into how it is made.

:13:51. > :13:56.Fantastic to see how it works, to get stuck into it. I can meet new

:13:56. > :14:01.people and to contact. Alexander has appeared on many

:14:01. > :14:04.television shows but one small local film companies. It has been

:14:04. > :14:10.proved that you can put something together like this here, on a

:14:10. > :14:16.budget. We have got lots of support from the extras, crew and actors. I

:14:16. > :14:21.think it takes a bit of vision and ambition to do it. The attention to

:14:21. > :14:26.detail is incredible, the uniforms made by hand. This map took over a

:14:26. > :14:30.week to draw. You can see all of the props, would you believe they

:14:30. > :14:40.managed to find it all online? There have been hiccups, they could

:14:40. > :14:43.not remove the jet engine from the The former liner QE 2 is to have

:14:43. > :14:47.passengers on board for the first time since the end of her final

:14:47. > :14:53.cruise from Southampton. She has been close to the public since

:14:53. > :14:55.arriving in Dubai in 2008. Now her gangway is being opened in was his

:14:55. > :14:59.brothers were the most exclusive New Year's Eve parties. Tomorrow,

:14:59. > :15:06.South Today will be discovering some secrets of Jane Austen's

:15:06. > :15:10.birthplace. There has been an Mycological dig at Steventon

:15:10. > :15:20.rectory. Life there provided inspiration for her novels such as

:15:20. > :15:21.

:15:21. > :15:27.pride and prejudice and Sense and And now the sport. Olympians, this

:15:27. > :15:30.big year, 2012 around the corner. Over the Christmas break, R Allenby

:15:30. > :15:34.and stuffing the turkey or are they in training? Not on Christmas Day

:15:34. > :15:39.but some of them are still trying to get selected, quite a lot of

:15:39. > :15:43.them so they have these gruelling training schedules. No let-up for

:15:43. > :15:48.them over Christmas. Just as true for our Paralympians. Paralympic

:15:48. > :15:52.rowers from the south are battling it out to represent Team GB at the

:15:52. > :16:00.Paralympics and members of the squad recently picked up the medals

:16:00. > :16:08.at the World Championships in Slovenia. Reham and David Smith

:16:08. > :16:11.were both part of the team to win gold in mixed coxed fours but Andy

:16:11. > :16:14.Houghton won silver in the men's adaptive single sculls. They have a

:16:14. > :16:22.lot to prove. In Beijing, Britain topped the

:16:22. > :16:26.medal table for rowing. 2012 hopefuls again seemed a long away

:16:26. > :16:30.off. The huge part of the battle is making it to the start-line in the

:16:30. > :16:35.Paralympics. Once we are there, we know we will be so strong. We will

:16:35. > :16:40.have to put in so much time and effort, we need to get that exactly

:16:40. > :16:49.right just to get selected. Like all the G B Rose, training is

:16:49. > :16:53.intense, at least two sessions per day -- Team GB rowers. For one

:16:53. > :16:58.hopeful, the training is nothing new. Dave Smith used to be on the

:16:58. > :17:02.British bobsleigh team. I had a spinal cords tumour sitting in my

:17:02. > :17:08.spine for 12 years. It caused massive problems throughout my

:17:08. > :17:13.whole bobsleigh career. I missed the Olympics pretty much because of

:17:13. > :17:16.that and three that I ended up in rowing. It pretty which saved my

:17:16. > :17:21.life because that is where I discovered the tumour. Pam Ralph

:17:21. > :17:26.only took up the sport last year after receiving a medical discharge

:17:26. > :17:29.-- Pam Relph. It has been an amazing year. The lead-up to the

:17:29. > :17:33.World Championship was amazing. I never believed that one year later

:17:33. > :17:36.I would be standing on a medal podium with a gold medal around my

:17:36. > :17:40.neck. It really was one door closing and another door opening. I

:17:40. > :17:43.feel so lucky to be given this opportunity. The new year will

:17:43. > :17:47.bring six months more of training and trials before team selection in

:17:47. > :17:51.June. They did not make it easy on

:17:51. > :17:54.themselves but they definitely displayed the form which earned

:17:54. > :18:01.them a Olympic selection. Having battled to reach the finals, the

:18:01. > :18:06.Poole-based trio Lucy and Kate Macgregor and Annie Lush came back

:18:06. > :18:12.to beat the French in the world salient Championships in Perth in

:18:12. > :18:16.Australia. Tomorrow they will go for gold against the USA.

:18:16. > :18:22.To come back from being down and to win the next three fairly easily

:18:22. > :18:28.into the last one, it was a great feeling. And in more sailing, Jong

:18:28. > :18:33.pink and Rick Peacock are leading the 49 fleet.

:18:33. > :18:39.looking ahead of the football, Portsmouth versus Southampton in

:18:39. > :18:43.the championship. The big rivals in the League in 2005 and the last

:18:43. > :18:48.time since won are Pompey was in 1984. Kris Temple got two club

:18:48. > :18:52.legends together for a chat about their prospects. In the red corner,

:18:52. > :18:59.Francis Benali and in the blue corner, Linvoy Primus. For the fans,

:18:59. > :19:05.it does not settle quickly. There will be people celebrated for a

:19:05. > :19:10.long time or commiserating. Both teams are very good. People might

:19:10. > :19:14.say things were offside or argue over penalties. This could make or

:19:14. > :19:22.spoil your Christmas! Yes, but as players as well we have been there

:19:22. > :19:26.in the past but the current lot of players have to go out and no

:19:26. > :19:30.people in the City and show their faces at some point. That is a lot

:19:30. > :19:33.harder to do if you come off the back of a bad result and

:19:33. > :19:37.performance in a local derby match. You can see more of that interview

:19:37. > :19:40.tomorrow. If you cannot wait, it is on the BBC's football website as

:19:40. > :19:45.well. We will also be talking about the

:19:45. > :19:50.policing at that match as well. Important subject now, the weather.

:19:50. > :19:55.He has, all eyes on the weather. Where is this tracking? We had

:19:55. > :20:01.several versions? It has sunk further south. Let's look at what

:20:01. > :20:11.we started the day with. A nice bright morning on the beach by John

:20:11. > :20:12.

:20:12. > :20:22.in Bournemouth. And also a photo taken by Bryn Jones. And Annie

:20:22. > :20:22.

:20:22. > :20:27.Kimblin have sent us a picture of So a lot to contend with, strong

:20:27. > :20:30.winds and rain turning into snow for some. To be challenging morning

:20:30. > :20:34.rush hour so be warned. This is that low pushing up from the South

:20:34. > :20:40.West and it is a bit further south than we expected it to be which

:20:40. > :20:45.means the abyss of the winds has drifted into the English channel.

:20:45. > :20:52.Quite a lot of rain and particularly for the FA south, we

:20:52. > :20:56.will see 20 to 30 mm of rain. -- for the further south. A yellow

:20:56. > :21:00.warning covering a wider area but you can see the Amber Zone

:21:00. > :21:10.indicating where most of the snow is likely to fall and really in a

:21:10. > :21:11.
