:00:07. > :00:11.Good evening from South Today. In tonight's programme: Health experts

:00:11. > :00:17.warned of a new legal high. The over-the-counter medication that is

:00:17. > :00:21.being abused. The winter sickness bars of causes

:00:21. > :00:26.problems. -- bug causes. The bodies back. Wards are closed

:00:26. > :00:31.as the dreaded norovirus makes an unwelcome return.

:00:31. > :00:38.A prisoner in her own home. Why this woman finds crossing the road

:00:38. > :00:45.safely an impossible task. autism is awful. -- autism. It is

:00:45. > :00:50.just a horrible thing. And down but not out. The boxer hoping to get

:00:50. > :01:00.his licence back after losing a leg. It is an obstacle. You just have to

:01:00. > :01:03.

:01:03. > :01:08.get over it and get on with life. No point sitting around whingeing.

:01:08. > :01:12.It has been claimed teenagers in Southampton i using a feminine

:01:12. > :01:17.hygiene product to get high. The over-the-counter substance is

:01:17. > :01:21.available in the city's Polish shops. Experts are saying there are

:01:21. > :01:25.dangers to people's health. It is now thought gravestones and

:01:25. > :01:33.memorials at a local cemetery have been vandalised by teenagers who

:01:33. > :01:37.were high on the drug. We came up here to find the whole

:01:37. > :01:47.monument with graffiti, pieces of the stone had been knocked off.

:01:47. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:53.This memorial is one of seven -- several damaged. The marble, elves

:01:53. > :01:58.-- columns had been damaged. The names on the slate had been smashed.

:01:59. > :02:02.During the clear-up, the underlying cause became a crystal clear.

:02:02. > :02:08.Amongst the rubbish were these packets. We did not take much

:02:08. > :02:12.notice but they were we did a bit more research, on the internet, it

:02:12. > :02:16.was drug-related. Drug charities say the product is known to have

:02:16. > :02:25.been misused in Eastern Europe but this is the first time it has been

:02:25. > :02:28.reported in the UK. We became aware of this only yesterday. I did ask a

:02:28. > :02:33.few of my contacts around the country, nobody else had come

:02:33. > :02:40.across it. At the moment, it does seem to be very localised. It

:02:40. > :02:46.produces hallucinations. People seem to get very confused and over-

:02:46. > :02:52.excited and agitated on this. That would explain some of the aspects

:02:52. > :02:58.of the vandalism. We had a few tears here. The people that use the

:02:58. > :03:01.cemetery have lots of -- we have lots of dog-walkers and may have

:03:01. > :03:05.been patrolling. The police say they are increasing patrols in the

:03:05. > :03:09.area as a result of the vandalism and are also investigating a

:03:09. > :03:13.possible link between drug abuse and the incident. Drug charities

:03:13. > :03:21.are urging retailers to be very careful about who they sell the

:03:21. > :03:26.product to. It is back. The winter vomiting bug,

:03:26. > :03:31.known as norovirus, has returned to hospitals. The virus causes severe

:03:31. > :03:34.vomiting and diarrhoea and his infectious. Wards have been closed

:03:34. > :03:42.in Southampton, Bournemouth and on the Isle of Wight. Other hospitals

:03:42. > :03:45.are in a state of high alert. How bad is the situation in

:03:45. > :03:50.Southampton? It is really quite serious.

:03:50. > :03:54.Visitors are coming to the hospital but in fewer numbers are than

:03:54. > :03:58.normal. The reason for that is they are being asked unless it is

:03:58. > :04:07.absolutely necessary, please, stay away. That applies also to the

:04:07. > :04:11.princes and hospital -- to the Princess Anne Hospital and Countess

:04:11. > :04:17.Mountbatten House. Southampton has seven wards closed. In Dorset, the

:04:17. > :04:23.Royal Bournemouth Hospital has two wards closed. St Mary's has a one

:04:23. > :04:31.or ward closed. I spoke to a doctor who is in charge of fighting the

:04:31. > :04:36.bog. -- the bug. Think about whether your visit is essential.

:04:36. > :04:42.They not, do not come. If you have suffered from vomiting or diarrhoea,

:04:42. > :04:47.do not come to the hospital until you have been symptom-free for a 48

:04:47. > :04:51.hours. Otherwise, you will prolong the outbreak. You will spread the

:04:51. > :04:56.virus. Some clearer advice. How difficult is it to deal with these

:04:56. > :05:01.are bug? Very difficult. Norovirus has been a problem for

:05:01. > :05:06.hospitals for several years. In spite of deep cleaning wards and

:05:06. > :05:11.having very strict hygiene regimes, which hospitals do, it keeps on

:05:11. > :05:17.coming back. What can we do? Basically, just stay away.

:05:17. > :05:21.Thank you. A court has heard a disabled man was killed with a

:05:21. > :05:26.rounders bat he had bought for protection. A 48-year-old man, John

:05:26. > :05:32.Ellison, was found with severe injuries in Brighton. David Sole

:05:32. > :05:35.and Denise Antonia were living with him and we are accused of his

:05:35. > :05:43.murder. The prosecution say John Ellison

:05:43. > :05:47.was a gentle spirit. He was terminally ill and disabled. Denise

:05:47. > :05:53.Antonia was his friend. A court heard she and her boyfriend David

:05:53. > :05:59.Sole had moved into his flat in central Brighton. On the night he

:05:59. > :06:03.died, the three were home together. The couple are caught on CCTV

:06:03. > :06:09.leaving and the next people to arrive found John Ellison's

:06:09. > :06:14.battered body. Denise has told police John was trying to protect

:06:14. > :06:22.her and her partner punched her in the face. John Ellison picked up

:06:22. > :06:28.the bat and told her to leave him along. The two men argued. Ben

:06:28. > :06:31.David Sole beat John Ellison. The court heard David Sole did not give

:06:31. > :06:36.his side of the story. The prosecution claimed this was a

:06:36. > :06:41.joint enterprise. The jury were shown CCTV footage of the couple at

:06:41. > :06:45.a nearby train station after the alleged murder. The court was told

:06:45. > :06:50.they travel to Hampshire where Denise disposed of the bat. The

:06:50. > :06:54.jury heard John Ellison had bought the rounders bat one week before he

:06:54. > :07:00.died. A friend claims he slept with it under his pillow. Another claims

:07:00. > :07:07.he bought it for protection but he did not say why. David Sole and

:07:07. > :07:11.Denise Antonia both deny murder. Hundreds of households in the south

:07:11. > :07:15.have had to manage a second day without electricity after storms

:07:15. > :07:19.ripped down power cables. The doctor's surgery in Elstead near

:07:19. > :07:23.Farnham was one of several properties in the village that lost

:07:23. > :07:30.power when a tree fell on a local sub-station. Doctors continue to

:07:30. > :07:37.see patients by torchlight, using handwritten notes.

:07:37. > :07:44.We had some torches and then I went home and got some lamps. I bought

:07:44. > :07:49.them in again this morning. We functioned OK. Patients came in. We

:07:50. > :07:54.just had to manage as we used to do, with paper. A bus driver who was

:07:54. > :07:58.injured when a tree crashed on to his vehicle remains in hospital. He

:07:58. > :08:03.was cut free from the wreckage and treated for severe head injuries.

:08:03. > :08:07.The hospital says he is in a serious but stable condition.

:08:07. > :08:11.Boat owners stranded on a stretch of the Kennet and Avon canal have

:08:11. > :08:15.begun moving again. The ten-mile stretch between Hungerford and

:08:16. > :08:20.Marlborough has been closed since mid-November because of low water

:08:20. > :08:26.levels. The problems for boat owners are not quite over yet.

:08:26. > :08:34.This was the last barrier to boats on the canal being lifted today.

:08:34. > :08:40.Repairs to this mean lest water leaking away. -- less water.

:08:40. > :08:47.water is at an all-year low. It has enabled us to open the canal by

:08:47. > :08:51.doing this. But the levels are too low for us to operate a normal

:08:51. > :08:55.level. We need some good rainfall to enable us to continue as as

:08:55. > :09:00.normal during the summer months. This reservoir may look healthy now

:09:00. > :09:04.have but officials will be watching to see how quickly levels go down

:09:04. > :09:09.with the canal open again. Those who were stranded were keen to be

:09:09. > :09:17.on the move. We have just got the all-clear. I will take the dog back

:09:17. > :09:24.to the boat and start the engine. Good news. We are ready for that.

:09:24. > :09:29.We can have a good bash now. Four miles an hour maximum. A few

:09:29. > :09:34.minutes later, they were doing just that. There are this was obviously

:09:34. > :09:39.not plain sailing. I can tell it has been closed for a long time.

:09:40. > :09:49.least the quenelle was open again, if only for a few days. -- the

:09:49. > :09:55.Kinnell. They need rain and plenty of it. Bodes like those just beyond

:09:55. > :10:02.us are not going to spend many more weeks, even months, tied up beside

:10:02. > :10:06.the Kennet and Avon canal. Still to come: Sarah Farmer will

:10:07. > :10:10.have an update on the weather. Catharina Moh have a bird's eye

:10:10. > :10:15.view of Weymouth. Have you got a head for heights?

:10:15. > :10:20.Join me to find out if you will be able to see this view in time for

:10:20. > :10:24.the Olympics. A woman has appeared in court

:10:24. > :10:29.charged with murder following the death of a man on Boxing Day in

:10:29. > :10:33.Dorset. Carol Kemp from Torquay in Devon is alleged to have stabbed to

:10:33. > :10:39.Martin Rusling as an address on Park Road in Poland. The 44-year-

:10:39. > :10:42.old was remanded in custody at Winchester Crown Court.

:10:42. > :10:52.Police in Hampshire are asking for help to identify thieves who used a

:10:52. > :10:54.

:10:55. > :10:59.stolen loyalty card on a shopping The number of drink-drivers have

:10:59. > :11:03.gone up. North and east Hampshire had the highest number of arrests

:11:03. > :11:07.with 68 in total. A Dorset women with autism has been

:11:07. > :11:12.told not to leave her house alone because she cannot cross the road.

:11:12. > :11:18.Alex Jordan is 28 and works with computers. Traffic confuses her so

:11:18. > :11:26.much she is likely to be hit. In one year, she was run over seven

:11:26. > :11:29.times. In the second of his special reports, here is our health

:11:29. > :11:38.correspondent. Alec and has support worker are out

:11:38. > :11:47.for a walk. -- Alexander support worker. The cars are confusing her.

:11:47. > :11:57.You can see them but they jump about. They do not go smoothly. It

:11:57. > :12:05.is jumping. Alex can't cross roads. She has been hit seven times. She

:12:05. > :12:11.has broken bones and put her head through a windscreen. What is

:12:11. > :12:16.happening when she sees traffic? All the exhaust fumes are different

:12:16. > :12:21.colours. There is so much to taking. They don't look like they are

:12:21. > :12:31.flowing, they looked like they are jumping about. The simple act of

:12:31. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:38.crossing a road is not as simple as everybody thinks. Alex is not

:12:38. > :12:45.allowed to leave a house alone. It is one of many care rules designed

:12:45. > :12:50.to keep her safe. The door is not locked behind us when we leave so

:12:50. > :12:57.she can't get out. She can go out if she wants to but she knows if

:12:57. > :13:05.she does, and tries to cross the road, she may well come to serious

:13:05. > :13:15.injury. Weekends can pass without has seen anyone. -- hurts seeing

:13:15. > :13:19.anyone. It is a prison. My life is restricted by my autism. It is not

:13:19. > :13:29.restricted by the people who help me, it is restricted by their

:13:29. > :13:45.

:13:45. > :13:50.condition. Autism is awful. It is A good afternoon, the care division.

:13:50. > :13:59.During the week she does care work here. She enjoys it. But if she

:13:59. > :14:09.gets stressed, she comes here. just want a quiet with no movement

:14:09. > :14:17.or sound, no smells, I can just take my time to calm myself down.

:14:17. > :14:27.That is before I go back to work. Heather is back for a cooking

:14:27. > :14:28.

:14:28. > :14:38.lesson. Knives can be a problem. put a knife in my pocket once and

:14:38. > :14:39.

:14:39. > :14:46.sat down, it stuck in my leg. Heather comes here once a week. It

:14:46. > :14:52.may sound like a lonely life, but that is not how Alex sees it.

:14:52. > :14:58.don't feel lazy or lonely, I have Facebook. Some of my best friends

:14:59. > :15:07.are people I have never met. It is just a case of trying to stay

:15:07. > :15:11.positive and looking forward to the good things. Alex Jordan facing the

:15:11. > :15:14.difficulties that so many of us take for granted. Well, in tomorrow

:15:14. > :15:17.night's programme we meet Victoria, who has Aspergers, and her

:15:17. > :15:26.boyfriend Matt, who has Tourette's, as they prepare for the Weymouth

:15:26. > :15:34.Carnival. Walking around hand in hand, nobody taking notice of us.

:15:34. > :15:41.Working on our conditions seems to help, it works out for the best.

:15:41. > :15:44.with us tomorrow to find out how they get on.

:15:44. > :15:47.Police in Hampshire are asking for help to identify thieves who used a

:15:47. > :15:50.stolen loyalty card on a shopping spree in Alton. The Nectar Card had

:15:50. > :15:53.one hundred thousand points on it when it was taken. That's worth

:15:53. > :15:56.around five hundred pounds of shopping. Officers would like to

:15:56. > :15:59.speak to a man and a woman captured on the in-store CCTV who may be

:15:59. > :16:02.able to help with their enquiries. Thieves have targeted the Bandstand

:16:02. > :16:06.in Basingstoke's war memorial park. They attempted to steal lead from

:16:06. > :16:09.its roof just before new year. When police arrived at the Park they

:16:09. > :16:12.found abandoned ladders and lengths of stripped lead dumped nearby.

:16:12. > :16:16.Although much of the lead has been recovered, the damage to the

:16:16. > :16:18.structure is extensive and repairs could take a long time.

:16:18. > :16:23.Today marked the official ground breaking ceremony for Weymouth's

:16:24. > :16:29.new observation tower. Standing 53 metres tall on the end of Festival

:16:29. > :16:32.pier it will overlook the Olympic Village and sailing course. And

:16:32. > :16:36.there to help proceedings along, Team GB sailors, Annie Lush and

:16:36. > :16:44.Lucy and Kate Macgregor. However they got slightly more than they

:16:44. > :16:51.bargained for as Catharina Moh reports.

:16:51. > :16:56.Swapping sales today. Three Olympic sailors marking the ground breaking

:16:56. > :17:01.ceremony at the new Weymouth tower. At its highest point you can see

:17:01. > :17:07.for miles along the coast, and today the new match-race team got a

:17:07. > :17:15.preview. I am not a fan of heights, it is a great view though. It is

:17:15. > :17:22.really exciting. You can see most of the race, so, I think for the

:17:22. > :17:25.Olympics it will be a great place to view from. The 3.5 million

:17:25. > :17:35.attraction is being built in time for the Olympics but not for the

:17:35. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:40.Olympics. Despite the individuals on offer, objections were launched.

:17:41. > :17:45.Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but most of the feedback

:17:45. > :17:53.is very positive. It will help local businesses. Do you think this

:17:53. > :17:59.will be ready in six months' time? Yes, the spinnaker tower is

:17:59. > :18:06.different, we are confident we can do it on the 1st July. We are ahead

:18:06. > :18:10.of schedule. There is no reason or why we cannot. The glass pod will

:18:10. > :18:16.hold 70 people and the experience will take 50 minutes. It could

:18:16. > :18:20.potentially take 1500 people every day. At just under 14 metres high,

:18:20. > :18:27.we are just shy of where the observation pod will stop. Visitors

:18:27. > :18:33.will get a chance of a 360 degree panoramic vista of the British

:18:33. > :18:38.Olympic sailing hopefuls. They will be competing for medals far down

:18:38. > :18:48.below and that is just in 205 days before the Olympics. They are

:18:48. > :18:51.

:18:51. > :18:58.confident they will be ready in time. She looked very cold up

:18:58. > :19:05.there! Much tougher on the water than up there! Moving on to the

:19:05. > :19:08.Olympics in just a moment. First of all, moving to football.

:19:08. > :19:11.The man charged with finding a new owner for Portsmouth Football Club

:19:11. > :19:12.says a deal could be imminent, five weeks after its parent company

:19:12. > :19:15.entered administration. The joint administrator Andrew Andronikou

:19:15. > :19:18.told BBC Radio Solent this morning that the search for new investment

:19:18. > :19:21.is at an advanced stage. This evening he has hinted that an

:19:21. > :19:23.announcement could be made in the next few days. Convers Sports

:19:23. > :19:26.Initiatives has been in administration since November last

:19:26. > :19:28.year, after the collapse of a Lithuanian bank which was

:19:29. > :19:31.controlled by the former Pompey owner Vladimir Antonov.

:19:31. > :19:36.Southampton Football Club has confirmed it's in talks with the

:19:36. > :19:39.Japanese international Tadanari Lee. The 26 year old striker flew into

:19:39. > :19:42.London yesterday and will train with the team for the next ten days

:19:42. > :19:45.until a work permit arrives. Elsewhere Bournemouth has completed

:19:45. > :19:50.the signing of Brighton defender Steve Cook on a three and a half

:19:50. > :19:54.year deal for an undisclosed fee. Now, there may have been criticism

:19:54. > :19:57.over the lack of women who receive sports coverage. But tonight, in

:19:57. > :20:01.the first of 3 reports featuring our female Olympic hopefuls, we

:20:01. > :20:05.meet a veteran of international hockey. Yet in more than a decade,

:20:05. > :20:09.gold has always eluded her. Kate Walsh has been the GB Hockey

:20:09. > :20:18.Captain since 2003 and has won several medals. But now, in 2012,

:20:18. > :20:23.there's only one colour that matters. Ed Sherry has the story.

:20:23. > :20:28.She is the heart of the team's defence. The 31 year-old Reading

:20:28. > :20:33.player made her debut in 1999 and has captained her country for the

:20:33. > :20:38.last eight years. We have an amazing squad. I want to think

:20:38. > :20:43.about the players, how are they feeling. How can I make it more

:20:43. > :20:47.enjoyable for them? Gold has so far proved elusive for the squad based

:20:47. > :20:52.at the National Sports Centre in Berkshire. The Olympics means

:20:52. > :20:58.everything to me. I remember watching the games as a little girl.

:20:59. > :21:04.I remember Sally Gunnell, she was so inspirational. To see a British

:21:04. > :21:08.woman do so well. The winning form is there, in December they

:21:08. > :21:14.travelled to California and whitewashed the USA in a four game

:21:14. > :21:19.series. There are not many moment in the day when I am not thinking

:21:19. > :21:23.about being the best team we can be. It is difficult to get the public

:21:23. > :21:29.to understand that, but when that is all you think off outside of

:21:29. > :21:35.your family, that shows how important it is to me. For Kate the

:21:35. > :21:42.job is part player, but also a motivator as a captain and for the

:21:42. > :21:46.management. Until a month before the Olympics they will not know,

:21:46. > :21:51.only 16 will go to the Olympics. We train with that knowledge every day.

:21:51. > :21:58.But we still support each other, we must be there for each other, but

:21:58. > :22:03.you are fighting for my place, and I am fighting for yours. Next up is

:22:03. > :22:09.the competition in Argentina, where the final squad will be selected.

:22:09. > :22:13.Then there will be a shot at the gold. For me, it is my life. I eat,

:22:13. > :22:17.sleep, and breed hockey. There is nothing I want more than a gold

:22:17. > :22:19.medal at the Olympic Games. And tomorrow night we'll meet one

:22:19. > :22:22.of the up and coming stars of British Athletics. Nineteen-year-

:22:22. > :22:25.old Bethy Woodward from Dorset is already a World Champion and is

:22:25. > :22:29.aiming for gold at this year's Paralympic games. She has cerebral

:22:29. > :22:31.palsy which affects one side of her body. She won gold in the 400

:22:31. > :22:34.metres in the IPC World Championships in New Zealand last

:22:34. > :22:38.January. Finally, an amateur boxer from

:22:38. > :22:41.Dorset who lost the lower half of his leg in an accident is back in

:22:41. > :22:45.the ring. Jonjo Look, who's eighteen and from Weymouth, says

:22:45. > :22:55.he's ready to compete again. Simon Clemison caught up with him at the

:22:55. > :22:59.club where he trains in Dorchester. Jonjo learnt the art of using his

:22:59. > :23:03.hands and feet in the boxing ring from an early age. But two years
