:00:05. > :00:09.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's

:00:09. > :00:12.programme: A man is found not guilty for the

:00:12. > :00:19.murder of the Hampshire pensioner Georgina Edmonds. We will have all

:00:19. > :00:23.the details. For years on from a brutal murder,

:00:23. > :00:26.the killer has not been conned. Tonight, police said the

:00:26. > :00:29.investigation is still open. A tanker driver is arrested for

:00:29. > :00:32.attempted murder after crashing into the home of a woman he knew.

:00:32. > :00:41.Keeping them close. Building work begins on a new 4 million neonatal

:00:41. > :00:44.unit. Just to be down the corridor from him, would be fantastic.

:01:00. > :01:03.meets the sportsmen and women with Four years ago, 77-year-old

:01:03. > :01:05.Georgina Edmonds was battered to death at her home in Bambridge near

:01:05. > :01:11.Eastleigh. Today, after a two-month trial, a jury at Winchester Crown

:01:11. > :01:13.Court found 33-year-old Matthew Hamlen not guilty of murder. Our

:01:13. > :01:23.home affairs correspondent Alex Forsyth has been following the case

:01:23. > :01:28.and joins us from outside Winchester Crown Court.

:01:28. > :01:32.The family of Matthew Hamlen have been in court for every day of this

:01:32. > :01:36.two-month trial. Today there was just a small Gaspar from their area

:01:36. > :01:40.of the gallery, when the jury delivered its verdict. They found

:01:40. > :01:45.him not guilty of the murder of Georgina Edmonds. There were tears

:01:45. > :01:49.from some jurors, but Matthew Hamlen himself showed little

:01:49. > :01:53.emotion as he was told that he would be a free man. The judge

:01:53. > :02:00.address the family of Georgina Edmonds. He said they had the

:02:00. > :02:03.sympathy of everyone in court. He said, for them, he recognise that

:02:03. > :02:09.strip -- distress of the last four years was not over. The police

:02:09. > :02:13.investigation will remain open. police, Crown Prosecution Service

:02:13. > :02:17.and the prosecuting counsel have worked tirelessly to present -- to

:02:17. > :02:21.present the evidence. The investigation has been one of the

:02:21. > :02:26.biggest murder inquiries ever conducted by Hampshire Constabulary.

:02:26. > :02:30.It is the policy of Hampshire Constabulary for unsolved homicide

:02:30. > :02:40.never to be closed. Her thoughts at this time are with the Georgina

:02:40. > :02:41.

:02:41. > :02:45.Edmonds's family. For Georgina Edmonds's family, it

:02:45. > :02:49.has been for years of waiting and wondering over who killed their

:02:49. > :02:52.mother and wife. They have showed incredible dignity throughout, but

:02:52. > :03:02.tonight there are still no closer to getting any answers about what

:03:02. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:10.exactly happened on that day in January four years ago. My mother

:03:10. > :03:15.has been hit over the head. It looks as if she is dead. The voice

:03:15. > :03:19.of Georgina Edmonds's son. He had just found her body. Georgina

:03:19. > :03:24.Edmonds was stabbed repeatedly then beaten to death. Police think she

:03:24. > :03:32.was tortured for her PIN number. absolutely shocked. I cannot

:03:32. > :03:37.believe that ever happened. I still think about her. I still think

:03:37. > :03:45.about her lovely smile. The killer stole her handbag, debit card and a

:03:45. > :03:50.mobile phone. He left the 30 in cash on the side. Huge shock that

:03:50. > :03:53.something like that happened in the heart of a community where crime

:03:53. > :03:58.caused a make bottles over their heads on a Friday night, or

:03:58. > :04:02.something like that. After four years and after that end of luck

:04:02. > :04:09.long court case, it is still not known who committed this brutal

:04:09. > :04:14.crime or wife. Following the murder, the police once the biggest manhunt

:04:14. > :04:18.for 30 years. They had little to go on. Aspect of DNA from a murder

:04:18. > :04:22.weapon -- from what they thought we might be the murder weapon. And

:04:22. > :04:27.this, a heavily disguised man trying to use the stone debit card

:04:27. > :04:32.that night. Police thought this man was a Matthew Hamlen, seen here

:04:32. > :04:42.shopping on the night of the murder. Now at has been proven that it was

:04:42. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:46.not him. -- now it has been proven. It is hard to comprehend anyone

:04:46. > :04:51.doing such a crime, let alone someone that I was close to and

:04:51. > :04:56.they knew very well. With me, he was honest, he would do absolutely

:04:57. > :05:01.anything, heart of gold, to be honest. Today, Matthew Hamlen was

:05:01. > :05:05.found not guilty of the murder of Sturgeon at Edmonds, after being on

:05:05. > :05:09.trial since November. For my heart goes out to his mother, who has

:05:09. > :05:17.been dragged through the hedges. Her life has been turned upside

:05:17. > :05:21.down. I feel for Matt. His life has been turned into utter hell. By

:05:21. > :05:26.will be get all the compensation he deserves. I feel desperately sorry

:05:26. > :05:33.for Georgina Edmonds's family and forager Jean herself. I cannot

:05:33. > :05:40.start to comprehend how much that much feel -- that must feel. I hope

:05:40. > :05:44.they get justice. That justice now seems elusive. Police are just -- a

:05:44. > :05:47.letter of the few clues they had before and a peaceful community is

:05:47. > :05:57.left of the memory of a cruel and brutal murder, along with The

:05:57. > :05:57.

:05:57. > :05:59.Knowledge that the killer has not been caught.

:05:59. > :06:02.Tonight, Georgina Edmonds's killing remains an unsolved case with the

:06:02. > :06:05.murderer still at large. Her death in 2008 turned the family's world

:06:05. > :06:13.upside down. Speaking to South Today, Georgina's daughter, Doddie,

:06:13. > :06:18.reflected on her mother's life. She was very warm, friendly, bubbly,

:06:18. > :06:27.hilariously funny. She could tell great stories. She used to act with

:06:27. > :06:31.the grand children. Just a very loving, kind, dear person. The sort

:06:31. > :06:34.of old lady you would want picture arms around and look after. She

:06:34. > :06:39.even had a broken foot at the time of the murder, and he could have

:06:39. > :06:44.told her to sit in a chair and shut up and grabbed her handbag and gone,

:06:44. > :06:52.so it made no sense. I cannot understand what happened or why. It

:06:52. > :06:59.was like something dying inside of me. Absolute bewilderment. Relate

:06:59. > :07:05.not believing it one minute then being absolutely bereft the next.

:07:05. > :07:08.My favourite memories of her are a her welcoming me. I would get to

:07:08. > :07:15.the back door, which had a window when it and I would see her and she

:07:15. > :07:21.would call, is it Doddy? I would always remember that. She would be

:07:21. > :07:30.so excited to see me. The last time I hugged her goodbye, she felt so

:07:30. > :07:34.frail and Little and elderly and I just wanted to hang on to her. It

:07:34. > :07:43.has been a roller-coaster of ups and downs falling the inquiry

:07:43. > :07:47.hoping for justice. -- following the inquiry. Missing the time I

:07:47. > :07:55.would have been able to spend good days with her. She is not there.

:07:55. > :08:04.There are times when I dream about her and we Cup -- and wake up and

:08:04. > :08:09.she is gone. Alex, where does the investigation

:08:09. > :08:13.go from here? This has been one of Hampshire

:08:13. > :08:17.police's biggest inquiries. Following the murder, the

:08:17. > :08:22.questioned hundreds of people, to give DNA swabs from people in the

:08:22. > :08:26.community, combed the woodland and forever as looking for clues, but

:08:26. > :08:30.they really had very little to: and they still do not have very much to

:08:30. > :08:34.go on. Some detectives have been working on this from the start.

:08:34. > :08:39.They said they needed no motivation to work out who had done it.

:08:40. > :08:46.Tonight, they will be taking stock trying to work out what happens now.

:08:46. > :08:56.Very difficult for her family, but also for the local community.

:08:56. > :09:01.

:09:01. > :09:05.It was, and not just in Banbridge, -- Brown -- Brambridge. This a

:09:05. > :09:12.really did provoke fear. Lots of people have been following this

:09:12. > :09:15.investigation, hoping for closure. Tonight, that seems a long way off.

:09:15. > :09:18.In other news tonight, a man has been arrested on suspicion of

:09:18. > :09:21.attempted murder after a tanker full of fuel crashed into a house

:09:21. > :09:24.in Wool near Wareham. The resulting fire gutted the house on Folly Lane

:09:24. > :09:28.near to the local primary School, but the woman living there managed

:09:28. > :09:36.to escape. Some locals say a man was seen running from the scene.

:09:36. > :09:40.Ben Moore reports. And keeps dead marks now the only

:09:40. > :09:45.clue that the huge scorched hole in this house was caused by a tanker

:09:45. > :09:49.full of fuel. It rode up the pavement on the Folly Lane at

:09:49. > :09:56.around 9:20am this morning. The resulting blaze ripped through the

:09:56. > :10:02.bungalow. We do not get that sort of thing every day. We are quiet, a

:10:02. > :10:07.sleepy village. I think we're all a bit puzzled. It is night to have

:10:07. > :10:10.the attention on the village for a change and promote the village.

:10:10. > :10:13.firefighters took an hour to get the blaze under control. And

:10:13. > :10:19.meanwhile, neighbours say they saw the man who drove the tanker

:10:19. > :10:23.leaving the scene. I was on my way to work and I came out of the

:10:23. > :10:27.driveway and he came running past me and he shouted that the house

:10:27. > :10:32.was on fire. Hours later, police detained a man on suspicion of

:10:32. > :10:36.attempted murder. Police say they have now arrested a 51-year-old man

:10:37. > :10:44.from the your full and that he was known to the woman. Neighbours and

:10:44. > :10:49.locals here say he was her partner. Amazingly, the woman inside escaped

:10:49. > :10:55.unharmed. The house, which was for sale, is a different matter. The

:10:55. > :10:57.tanker is no longer there, removed pending a police examination.

:10:57. > :11:00.One of the six footballers arrested yesterday in connection with an

:11:00. > :11:02.alleged sexual assault in Sussex has been eliminated from the

:11:02. > :11:06.enquiry. No further action will be taken against 24-year-old Brighton

:11:06. > :11:10.defender Tommy Elphick. Those arrested include the son of a

:11:10. > :11:14.Premier League manager, and a first team regular. The five players have

:11:14. > :11:17.been released on bail. The Sunday Times has dropped its

:11:17. > :11:22.challenge to a court ruling ordering it to hand over emails to

:11:22. > :11:24.police relating to speeding claims against Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne.

:11:24. > :11:27.Essex Police are investigating claims the energy secretary asked

:11:27. > :11:35.his then wife Vicky Pryce, to take speeding penalty points on his

:11:35. > :11:40.behalf. Lib Dem MP Mr Huhne says the allegations are simply

:11:40. > :11:44.incorrect. Relatives of elderly dementia

:11:44. > :11:47.patients say they will fight plans to close a care home in Berkshire.

:11:47. > :11:50.Some fear their loved ones would not survive the trauma of being

:11:50. > :11:54.moved from the Fosters centre in Woodley, run on behalf of Wokingham

:11:54. > :11:57.Borough. But council officials argue the building, at almost 50

:11:57. > :12:06.years old, falls woefully short of current standards, and would cost

:12:06. > :12:11.too much to upgrade. Allen Sinclair reports.

:12:11. > :12:15.She can no longer speak up for herself. 92 next week, she has

:12:15. > :12:19.advanced dementia and for several years as the ground up -- round-

:12:19. > :12:24.the-clock care. The facility is now facing closure, leaving relatives

:12:24. > :12:27.of those now living they are deeply worried. My biggest fear is that

:12:27. > :12:33.she will into days either shortly after a move, or with people that

:12:33. > :12:37.do not know are. I feel like it is letting her down, betraying her. I

:12:37. > :12:43.do not know where else I can trust. The environment may not be up to

:12:43. > :12:47.the latest hundreds, but they are to the standard appropriate for

:12:47. > :12:52.advanced dementia. The Foster's care home is almost 50 years old

:12:52. > :12:55.and needs roofing repairs and the new Windows. The upgrade would cost

:12:55. > :12:59.tens of thousands of pounds, but because air quality commission says

:12:59. > :13:03.the building would still fall short of modern guidelines on the size of

:13:03. > :13:07.rooms and the standard of facilities. To really make

:13:07. > :13:11.substantial changes, we're looking at moving walls around, substantial

:13:11. > :13:21.building works which would cause disruption and likely mean their

:13:21. > :13:25.residents would have to move out. Some of the 36 staff may be offered

:13:25. > :13:29.work at the council's other care home, but there is uncertainty

:13:29. > :13:39.about the rest. Meanwhile, the relatives have done -- pledge to do

:13:39. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:42.all they can to keep their home the The average price of petrol in the

:13:42. > :13:46.south is higher than average, according to the AA. They say

:13:46. > :13:49.petrol prices have gone up by 1p a litre this year. That is

:13:49. > :13:53.highlighting a big difference in price between Newbury and Reading,

:13:53. > :13:57.even though they are only a few miles apart. There are supermarkets

:13:57. > :14:01.that sell petrol cheap. If you have one of those in your town it tracks

:14:01. > :14:05.the price down for miles around. If you haven't got one, it does not,

:14:05. > :14:10.so 12 mile difference, which is more than you can sensibly drive to

:14:10. > :14:14.save yourself money on fuel, means you can get this 3p or four pence

:14:14. > :14:17.difference between two towns. A court has heard how some inmates

:14:17. > :14:21.at Ford Prison faced abuse as they tried to put out fires started by

:14:22. > :14:26.rioters. More than 5 million of damage was caused during the

:14:26. > :14:30.disturbance on New Year's Day 2011. Hove Crown Court has been told

:14:30. > :14:34.trouble flared after staff better tested some inmates alcohol. The

:14:34. > :14:38.jury heard prisoners who tried to put out fires were abused or

:14:38. > :14:42.threatened by other inmates. Seven men are on trial accused of prison

:14:42. > :14:46.mutiny. Still to come in South Today, Tony

:14:46. > :14:51.Husband on sport and Sarah Farmer has the weather details. It is a

:14:51. > :14:54.blustery weekend ahead, perfect for kite flyers and windsurfers. Join

:14:54. > :14:58.me for the full forecast later in the programme. I will have the

:14:58. > :15:03.latest on another eventful day for Portsmouth Football Club, and we

:15:03. > :15:09.are behind the scenes with some of the Olympians as we speed you Our

:15:09. > :15:13.Special Programme the Sunday. The motive spiders subject of what

:15:13. > :15:19.happens to people after they die is making headlines in the south --

:15:19. > :15:22.the emotive subject. It follows a decision by the Co-op to add chapel

:15:22. > :15:25.of rest to one of its funeral parlours in Portsmouth. Local

:15:25. > :15:30.residents have involved -- have launched a campaign involving

:15:30. > :15:35.posters and petition. Portsmouth is a mixture of shops

:15:35. > :15:39.and houses on this road. This here is the funeral shop, which is now

:15:39. > :15:43.at the centre of a major controversy. Following the Co-op's

:15:43. > :15:48.decision to apply for permission to store bodies here before they are

:15:48. > :15:53.either cremated or buried. It has certainly be a big talking point in

:15:53. > :15:59.this part of the city. They are not doing any harm, of a? REPORTER:

:15:59. > :16:04.What would not worry you? Not at all. Very morbid. I don't like the

:16:04. > :16:08.sound of that. Bury eerie. It is part of life, you live, you die, it

:16:08. > :16:13.does not bother me at all. A number of neighbouring properties overlook

:16:13. > :16:17.the backyard of the building. The Co-op wants to use it as a chapel

:16:18. > :16:21.of rest. I enjoy my roof garden, it has been here 15 years. I could be

:16:21. > :16:26.sat here at any time and I could see a body come in there. I don't

:16:26. > :16:31.want to see it. Why should I? city council rejected the Co-op's

:16:31. > :16:36.first application to use the building in another area of

:16:36. > :16:40.Portsmouth as a chapel of rest but the company is now appealing. The

:16:40. > :16:43.Co-op says it will be used 40 or 50 times a year, with vehicles

:16:44. > :16:47.collecting coffins reversing right up to the back of the building.

:16:47. > :16:52.What we're trying to do is give the opportunity for local people to

:16:52. > :16:55.have a local chapel of rest in their time of need. The city

:16:55. > :17:03.council will make a decision on whether to allow the Co-op to open

:17:03. > :17:09.a chapel of rest on Fairbrother first. -- on February 1st.

:17:09. > :17:12.A fire has damaged an industrial dry-cleaners in Dr near Southampton.

:17:12. > :17:16.60 firefighters tackled the blaze on the Calmore Industrial Estate

:17:16. > :17:19.overnight. They stopped the fire spreading to neighbouring units.

:17:19. > :17:24.The fire was spotted in the early hours.

:17:24. > :17:28.Building work at a new intensive care unit for babies born to see

:17:28. > :17:31.court to soon began at Salisbury District Hospital today. It will

:17:31. > :17:35.provide accommodation for mums and dads to stay with their babies. At

:17:35. > :17:42.the moment they have to make daily trips to the hospital. It has cost

:17:42. > :17:48.4 million to build. Baby Brennan has been here for more

:17:48. > :17:52.than three months. He weighed just over one lb when he was born at 26

:17:52. > :17:56.weeks and was the same size as this cuddly toy. It is heart-wrenching

:17:56. > :18:04.when you have to walk away and leave your baby when they are so

:18:04. > :18:10.poorly. Just to be down the corridor from him would be

:18:10. > :18:14.fantastic, you know. Jacob was born on Christmas Day but his parents

:18:14. > :18:20.were not expecting him until the end of next month. They'll have

:18:20. > :18:26.more than 30 miles away. It takes me about 45 minutes to travel in

:18:26. > :18:32.every day. I stay all day and leave about five o'clock night every day.

:18:32. > :18:35.This is the newest arrival. Jack was born last night. The unit sees

:18:35. > :18:41.around 300 babies a year. On average they will stay here for

:18:41. > :18:45.about one month. The problem is at the moment it is a very small move

:18:45. > :18:49.-- it is a very small unit. If you have babies in, their families in,

:18:49. > :18:53.and you need a baby who needs attention there is not the room and

:18:53. > :18:57.we have to move furniture to get to a sick baby. Not all families can

:18:57. > :19:02.be in at the same time. The new unit would be really four times the

:19:02. > :19:05.size of the current one. It will still care for the same number of

:19:05. > :19:11.babies but there will be birds for parents so they won't have to be

:19:11. > :19:15.separated. Mothers and fathers bond better with their babies when they

:19:16. > :19:19.haven't uninterrupted access to the baby, and the every round. We all

:19:19. > :19:23.know, it is well-documented, that babies do better when they are with

:19:23. > :19:25.their mother. These babies should be able to go home in the next few

:19:25. > :19:32.weeks. They will never remember their time here but the level of

:19:32. > :19:35.care is something their parents will never forget.

:19:35. > :19:40.I am sure that new building can't come soon enough.

:19:40. > :19:44.Tony Husband is here with the sport. We have some breeding ewes? Yes, I

:19:44. > :19:48.was all set to talk about the ownership of Portsmouth and I will

:19:48. > :19:52.do, but breaking news coming out of the Madjeski Stadium, literally in

:19:52. > :19:55.the last 20 minutes. Reading have announced that owner Sir John

:19:55. > :20:00.Madejski has reached an initial agreement which could lead to new

:20:00. > :20:04.investment in Reading Football Club. The club say that a company called

:20:04. > :20:08.Thames Sport Investment our discussions with Sir John, who

:20:08. > :20:13.stresses that this statement that he is continuing as chairman. Sir

:20:13. > :20:17.John Madjeski has been searching for investment for several years.

:20:17. > :20:23.Last year the Royals posted losses of 5 million. Lots more on this on

:20:23. > :20:26.BBC Radio Berkshire tomorrow, but the news is that Reading are in an

:20:26. > :20:29.initial agreement over investment in the club. Portsmouth's finances

:20:29. > :20:34.are in grave issue according to the administrator who is trying to find

:20:34. > :20:40.a buyer for the Fratton Park club. Pompey have seen one potential
