:00:01. > :00:06.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's

:00:06. > :00:12.programme:'s Drama on the runway - a transatlantic jet makes an

:00:12. > :00:15.emergency landing and is evacuated at Gatwick after a technical fault.

:00:15. > :00:18.Under review - defence decisions are due any day on the future of

:00:19. > :00:28.the new aircraft carriers. The former professional footballer

:00:29. > :00:29.

:00:29. > :00:35.who tried to end it all. As I was getting more intoxicated,

:00:35. > :00:41.I was planning it. I knew the last train was coming from Portsmouth to

:00:41. > :00:44.London and I thought that nobody loved me. I had let people down

:00:44. > :00:47.again. And closing in on a return to the

:00:47. > :00:54.Premier League - Reading are in the driving seat as they top the

:00:55. > :01:04.Championship. No one was jumping up and down after the game with

:01:05. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:09.Southampton, we are completely Flights in and out of Gatwick

:01:09. > :01:14.airport were suspended today after an aircraft with more than 200

:01:14. > :01:16.passengers on board was forced to make an emergency landing. The

:01:16. > :01:22.Virgin A330 plane had left the Sussex airport bound for Florida,

:01:22. > :01:24.but had to turn back due to a technical issue. Some passengers

:01:24. > :01:29.were injured as the plane was evacuated using the emergency

:01:30. > :01:39.chutes while it was on the runway. Our reporter Sean Killick is at

:01:40. > :01:41.

:01:41. > :01:47.Gatwick for us tonight. It was at 10:48am this morning when

:01:47. > :01:51.Virgin A330 left Gatwick bound for Orlando. At first everything seemed

:01:51. > :01:56.all right, but then an emergency alarm sounded and the captain made

:01:56. > :02:01.a decision to turn back to Gatwick immediately. One of the passengers

:02:01. > :02:05.from Berkshire said deplane was a wobbly. There was panic among the

:02:05. > :02:10.cabin crew and there was an announcement saying that there

:02:10. > :02:16.would be an emergency landing. The plane circled the landing twice.

:02:16. > :02:21.Emergency vehicles landed -- arrived as the plane landed. There

:02:21. > :02:27.was smoke in the cabin. That has not been confirmed, but the fire

:02:27. > :02:31.service say they have been called. The plane did not taxi back to the

:02:31. > :02:35.terminal, instead it stop that the end wait and beat shoots were

:02:35. > :02:39.deployed and passengers jumped down. Several were injured in the process.

:02:39. > :02:46.This is the scene on the ground outside the aeroplane captured by

:02:46. > :02:56.one of the passengers. Passengers assemble here. Passengers assemble

:02:56. > :02:59.here. Passengers assemble here. Some alarms went off and the

:02:59. > :03:02.captain for the best thing to do was to return, so he did. He got

:03:02. > :03:07.back to Gatwick and got the aircraft on the ground as quickly

:03:07. > :03:12.as possible. We did an emergency evacuation and got the passengers

:03:12. > :03:17.of, it was the right thing to do. It was disappointing to disrupt

:03:17. > :03:20.everyone's plants like that. I have just been with the passengers and

:03:20. > :03:26.clearly they are traumatised by what happened. They are equally

:03:26. > :03:30.grateful to the crew for doing the job they did.

:03:31. > :03:33.Is everything back to normal at Gatwick tonight? What has happened

:03:33. > :03:39.to the passengers who were involved in the incident?

:03:39. > :03:49.The passengers, some of them have gone home and some are staying at a

:03:49. > :03:51.hotel tonight. Virgin have teams of staff who are helping now. The Air

:03:51. > :03:55.Accident Investigation Branch has got custody of the plane and had

:03:55. > :04:00.interviewed the crew. As for the airport, I have spoken to them and

:04:00. > :04:03.they say that it is getting back to normal. It is not back to normal

:04:03. > :04:11.yet. The runway was closed for one hour and 45 minutes. During that

:04:11. > :04:15.time, nine flights were cancelled, 27 were diverted to other airports,

:04:15. > :04:18.but they say that they are trying to get things back to normal as

:04:18. > :04:23.soon as possible and this could have everything back to normal

:04:23. > :04:25.tomorrow. -- they should have everything back to normal tomorrow.

:04:25. > :04:28.Businesses and shops were evacuated in Winchester this afternoon

:04:28. > :04:30.following a security threat at the city's Crown Court. A 100-metre

:04:30. > :04:33.exclusion zone was set up and several roads closed, causing

:04:33. > :04:42.significant disruption to traffic. Specialist military were also

:04:42. > :04:44.called to the site. The police cordon has now been lifted.

:04:44. > :04:47.The government's confirmed it's carrying out a review of elements

:04:47. > :04:51.of the costly and controversial aircraft carrier project, which is

:04:51. > :04:55.sustaining thousands of jobs across the south. Major sections of the

:04:55. > :04:58.giant ships are due to be moved out of a shipyard in Portsmouth over

:04:58. > :05:02.the next few months. The latest arguments centre on which type of

:05:02. > :05:07.fighter jets are chosen. One leading defence analyst has told

:05:07. > :05:12.South Today he thinks the entire programme is in a mess. Steve

:05:12. > :05:16.Humphrey is in Portsmouth for us tonight. Steve, once again lots of

:05:16. > :05:18.questions being asked about this major defence project?

:05:18. > :05:25.Yes, the Defence Secretary Philip Hammond is facing the biggest

:05:26. > :05:29.decision since he took charge of the military. The choice of

:05:29. > :05:39.aircraft will have a major impact on the defence budget, and on when

:05:39. > :05:44.

:05:44. > :05:48.the new carriers come into service. The Labour government wanted to buy

:05:48. > :05:52.this version of the fighter, but the Coalition government opted for

:05:52. > :05:56.the original take-off and landing model instead. That means

:05:56. > :05:59.installing catapults and wires on the aircraft carriers. It is

:05:59. > :06:06.understood the modifications to the ships being built in Portsmouth and

:06:06. > :06:09.other shipyards could cost an extra 2 billion on top of the expected

:06:09. > :06:12.6 billion already being spent on the carriers. With massive

:06:13. > :06:17.pressures on the defence budget, there have been reports that the

:06:17. > :06:24.Defence Secretary is considering doing a U-turn and reverting to the

:06:24. > :06:28.plan to buy the jump jet version. It has much lower upfront costs.

:06:28. > :06:32.Buying the jump jets would mean the UK would have a fully functioning

:06:32. > :06:35.aircraft-carrier by around 2018, up to seven years earlier than if the

:06:35. > :06:43.other model is chosen. So, Steve, what are defence experts

:06:43. > :06:50.saying about this? We have spoken to two defence

:06:50. > :06:56.experts today and they believe the government is making it difficult

:06:56. > :07:01.so dish -- is having a hard time making a decision. I think you

:07:01. > :07:05.could probably call this a mess. This is probably the hardest

:07:06. > :07:09.challenge the government has in defence, and certainly is the

:07:09. > :07:15.biggest challenge for the Secretary of State for Defence in his six

:07:15. > :07:20.months in office. There is utter confusion in the

:07:20. > :07:22.Ministry of Defence. The politicians have not made up their

:07:22. > :07:26.minds with what they want them to do in strategic terms, the military

:07:26. > :07:29.is trying to second-guess what the Treasury and the politicians want,

:07:29. > :07:33.and at the end of the day, no one has really identified what

:07:33. > :07:35.resources are available to build these carriers and then can they go

:07:35. > :07:38.them for the maximum operational benefit.

:07:38. > :07:43.And when will a decision be made? Well, I understand meetings are

:07:44. > :07:46.taking place this week. No ministers are doing interviews

:07:47. > :07:49.about this, but the MoD issued a statement saying the government is

:07:49. > :07:52.committed to a carrier strike capability, but is finalising its

:07:52. > :07:54.budget. The statement says: "As part of this process, we are

:07:54. > :08:04.reviewing all programmes, including elements of the carrier strike

:08:04. > :08:05.

:08:05. > :08:08.programme, to validate costs and And the MoD says the defence

:08:08. > :08:18.secretary will announce the outcome of the process to Parliament in due

:08:18. > :08:21.course. Watch this space.

:08:21. > :08:24.Thank you, steep. Detectives are continuing to

:08:24. > :08:26.question a man on suspicion of murder after a father-of-one was

:08:26. > :08:30.stabbed in Waterlooville. 27-year old Simon Warton was fatally

:08:30. > :08:33.stabbed last Thursday. Police had been called to the Dove Close area

:08:33. > :08:37.of the town after reports of a fight. Sean Bailey, who's 28, was

:08:37. > :08:42.arrested on Saturday in Havant. Four other people have been

:08:42. > :08:44.arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

:08:44. > :08:48.Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the alleged

:08:48. > :08:50.murder of a father of three from near Farnborough. The 36-year-old

:08:51. > :08:57.victim died yesterday following a fight outside the Old Court House

:08:57. > :08:59.Pub in Cove on Saturday evening. Officers from the Hampshire Force

:08:59. > :09:08.arrested the man who had voluntarily attended Aldershot

:09:08. > :09:15.Police Station. Joe Campbell reports.

:09:15. > :09:21.Throughout the day, those who were close to they came to the spot

:09:21. > :09:26.where he suffered fatal injuries. The father of two was a successful

:09:26. > :09:31.businessman. Tonight his parents described him as a modern dance,

:09:31. > :09:34.the kind of man who was happy to help change his kids nappies.

:09:34. > :09:39.Messages from his children, along with a note from his partner, were

:09:39. > :09:42.among the tributes left at the scene at today. Police are still

:09:42. > :09:48.trying to piece together events outside this pub on Saturday. One

:09:48. > :09:53.line of inquiry is an altercation in side spilled out onto the

:09:53. > :09:59.streets. What is clear is that the fatal consequences of the events

:09:59. > :10:04.for Mr Digs. A punch was thrown and he fell to the floor, striking his

:10:04. > :10:11.head on the ground. A witness, who was a trained paramedic, assisted

:10:11. > :10:14.as he could force up 837-year-old man was arrested in -- this

:10:14. > :10:17.afternoon after voluntarily attending Aldershot police station.

:10:17. > :10:20.Three men and a woman have appeared before Winchester Crown Court

:10:20. > :10:23.charged with the murder of Jamie Dack in Southampton. The body of

:10:23. > :10:25.the 22 year-old was found stabbed and burned in an industrial bin on

:10:26. > :10:28.Easter Sunday. Lee Nicholls, Andrew Dwyer-Skeats and Donna Chalk, all

:10:28. > :10:34.from Southampton, along with Ryan Woodmansey of no fixed abode, are

:10:34. > :10:44.also charged with conspiracy to rob and false imprisonment. They were

:10:44. > :10:47.

:10:48. > :10:50.all remanded in custody until their Hundreds of people have supported a

:10:51. > :10:53.fundraising event to help the two young children of a Surrey police

:10:53. > :10:56.detective who was killed last October. Heather Cooper was found

:10:56. > :10:58.dead in woods near Haslemere. Her former partner Peter Foster is

:10:58. > :11:06.awaiting trial for her murder. Rachael Canter reports.

:11:06. > :11:11.A day for families in Haslemere. And a day to remember Heather.

:11:11. > :11:15.had met the children a few times and it really had an effect, what

:11:15. > :11:20.happened. I just wanted to do as much as possible to help. I know a

:11:20. > :11:23.lot of people in the community also felt the same.

:11:23. > :11:26.Heather loved horses - this painting by a local artist was

:11:26. > :11:31.donated to be auctioned in her memory. All the money raised here

:11:31. > :11:36.will go into a welfare fund set up by Surrey Police. Heather has two

:11:36. > :11:40.very, very young children that through the tragic events, find

:11:41. > :11:44.themselves in a difficult place. We thought it was important as a force

:11:44. > :11:46.to support the development of a fund that can see those children

:11:46. > :11:49.being helped and supported in the future.

:11:49. > :11:59.Heather's children now live with their grandparents in Yorkshire.

:11:59. > :12:05.

:12:05. > :12:08.But they continue to be remembered Still to come in this evening's

:12:08. > :12:16.South Today: They're on the verge - can Reading secure promotion this

:12:16. > :12:19.week? We hear from the boss. $NEWLINE Detectives have been given

:12:19. > :12:22.more time to question two 14-year- old boys on suspicion of murder

:12:22. > :12:24.after a man died following a fight in Rottingdean near Brighton. A

:12:24. > :12:27.post mortem showed 19-year-old Connor Saunders from Woodingdean

:12:27. > :12:31.died from head injuries. Officers say they believe he was punched

:12:31. > :12:41.causing him to fall to the floor. A 13-year-old boy also arrested on

:12:41. > :12:44.suspicion of murder has been released on bail.

:12:44. > :12:46.Pretty much the whole of southern England is now officially in

:12:46. > :12:48.drought and it's thought the situation may not improve until

:12:48. > :12:52.Christmas. Today the Environment Agency added Dorset, Hampshire and

:12:52. > :12:54.Wiltshire to its drought map, and repeated calls for water to be used

:12:54. > :13:03.wisely. The National Farmers Union says the prolonged drought will

:13:03. > :13:07.pose challenges to farming. We want the sunshine during the day, the

:13:07. > :13:11.showers at night. We have 10 million more mouths to feed in the

:13:11. > :13:15.next 50 years. People have to be less resistant the things like

:13:15. > :13:24.genetic modification. That what it is a pout, been smarter, thinking

:13:24. > :13:27.more carefully about God-given Figures form the Health Protection

:13:27. > :13:30.Agency have shown that there've been more cases of Whooping Cough

:13:30. > :13:33.in southern England than anywhere else in the UK last year. 182

:13:33. > :13:35.people were infected in the South East, compared with 61 people the

:13:35. > :13:39.year before. That's the largest number of cases anywhere in the

:13:39. > :13:41.country, and it does not include London. The biggest increases were

:13:41. > :13:48.in children aged under three months; ten to 15-year-olds; and

:13:48. > :13:51.the over-15s. Researchers in Southampton are

:13:51. > :13:55.taking part in a ground breaking clinical study to find a cure for

:13:55. > :13:59.Parkinson's Disease. The project in the south is being co-ordinated by

:13:59. > :14:02.Southampton University and Romsey Hospital. It's now looking for

:14:02. > :14:06.volunteers who've been diagnosed with the neurological disease and

:14:06. > :14:12.their siblings. Researchers are hoping to find indicators in the

:14:12. > :14:15.blood which could be used for new tests.

:14:15. > :14:18.Football has long had a culture of drinking and gambling among some

:14:18. > :14:22.players. Recently, the sport has begun to recognise more and more

:14:22. > :14:24.the damage it's caused to many. One former professional, Warren

:14:24. > :14:27.Aspinall, who played for Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Brighton, is a

:14:27. > :14:34.recovering alcoholic and gambling addict who tried to take his own

:14:34. > :14:44.life. In a bid to help the next generation of players, he's decided

:14:44. > :14:44.

:14:44. > :14:50.to speak about the demons he's faced. Andy Steggall reports.

:14:50. > :14:55.Five years ago. Warren Aspinall, visiting the place where his life

:14:55. > :14:59.changed forever. A former professional footballer, he earned

:14:59. > :15:03.big money, enjoyed the trappings of fame, but he was also fighting two

:15:03. > :15:09.addictions common in the game: Drink and gambling. Playing cards

:15:09. > :15:13.on away trips, big money. When you have lost thousands of pounds, you

:15:13. > :15:19.have to play football. Your mind is not on the football either because

:15:19. > :15:24.you are thinking about when we get 1,000 back? When I used to win, I

:15:24. > :15:29.used to celebrate with a drink. I lost quite a bit of money and I

:15:29. > :15:32.would go in the pub and commiserate. With his playing career over, so

:15:33. > :15:37.were the days of the big pay packets. After another loss at the

:15:37. > :15:46.bookies, Warren believed there was only one way out. Went to the pub,

:15:46. > :15:50.I knew I was going to do it. I was planning it. I knew what time the

:15:50. > :15:56.last train was coming from Portsmouth to London. I thought

:15:56. > :16:01.that nobody loved me. Because I have let people down again. I went

:16:01. > :16:10.into the train station and that -- and sat on the train I'm with my

:16:10. > :16:16.back to it. I was lucky enough that the trainer stopped at the last

:16:16. > :16:19.minute. I rolled over and thought, what are you doing, Warren? I came

:16:19. > :16:24.back to my fiancee who I was staying with at the time and told

:16:24. > :16:31.her what had happened. She said, you need help. Realising she was

:16:31. > :16:38.right, he got help. He phoned the sporting chance clinic a place

:16:38. > :16:42.where many other footballers have received treatment. 28 days in

:16:43. > :16:46.there and it is like a prison. You get better in there and they teach

:16:46. > :16:50.you the right things. Once you have finished, it is up to you to go out

:16:50. > :16:53.and put the balls into practice. Now Warren travels around the

:16:53. > :17:02.country, speaking to the next generation of footballers, warning

:17:02. > :17:11.them of the dangers that can harm a career.

:17:11. > :17:16.You can see a lot more of that tonight at 11:05pm tonight.

:17:16. > :17:20.In tonight's programme, he will go into more detail about the next

:17:20. > :17:25.generation. They get into the game and, quickly and they get a lot

:17:25. > :17:29.more money. Shell we talk about the better things off football? Better

:17:29. > :17:33.if you are a Reading fan! Some people thought that Reading would

:17:33. > :17:37.win on Friday night and some people thought it would be a draw. Funny

:17:37. > :17:42.that you sat on the fence and I didn't! Credit to you, you know

:17:43. > :17:52.more about the game than at any! just stick a pin in the game and

:17:53. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :17:59.Let's take a look at what happened on Friday night at St Mary's

:17:59. > :18:07.Stadium. This was the last man to take Southampton into the division,

:18:07. > :18:11.of course. Southampton did get an equaliser, you thought about. As we

:18:11. > :18:16.see some of the emotions from the fans, may be Southampton would win

:18:16. > :18:22.this game, but the man known as Alfie popped up as a substitute and

:18:22. > :18:25.he got two big goals which left those fans frustrated because

:18:25. > :18:29.Southampton put the promotion parties on hold. Reading could go

:18:29. > :18:33.up if they get a better result than West Ham tomorrow night. Nottingham

:18:33. > :18:37.Forest tomorrow night for the royals. The manager has been

:18:37. > :18:41.talking to the media today as he looks ahead to again tomorrow. Very

:18:41. > :18:46.much the message seems to be we are keeping our feet on the ground.

:18:46. > :18:50.The focus does not change. It is interesting after the game that no

:18:50. > :18:52.one was jumping up and down in the dressing room after Southampton. We

:18:52. > :18:56.are completely focused on the next game.

:18:56. > :18:58.So defeat for Southampton but that in itself wasn't a hammer blow to

:18:58. > :19:01.their promotion chances, what they could done without though, was the

:19:01. > :19:04.Hammers scoring six times on Saturday in beating Brighton, whose

:19:04. > :19:07.own promotion ambitions are now fading rapidly. Albion were 3-0

:19:07. > :19:10.down at Upton Park within ten minutes as West ham brushed them

:19:10. > :19:12.aside, goalkeeper Peter Brezovan had a game to forget, and boss Gus

:19:12. > :19:15.Poyet has promised he'll be bringing in more players with

:19:15. > :19:25.Premier league experience after saying his side are not ready to be

:19:25. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:34.promoted yet. The goals got worse in the second half. There is a good

:19:34. > :19:37.finish coming up. Good effort. Brighton well out of it.

:19:37. > :19:39.To give you an idea of how things have changed, here's how the table

:19:39. > :19:42.looked on Friday night before Southampton played Reading. And

:19:42. > :19:45.here's how it looks tonight: the key change, other than Reading now

:19:45. > :19:53.being top is in the goal difference. There's been an eight-goal swing,

:19:53. > :19:55.in the goal difference between Southampton and West Ham. At the

:19:55. > :19:58.other end of the Championship Portsmouth are hanging on after a

:19:58. > :20:00.dramatic victory at Doncaster, Roisin Gauson rounds up the rest of

:20:00. > :20:03.the action. These have been turbulent times for

:20:04. > :20:07.Pompey, who have been fighting for survival both on and off the pitch.

:20:07. > :20:14.And the rollercoaster continued over the weekend. Trailing 2-0 at

:20:14. > :20:17.half time, Michael Appletons men fought back. But with a minute of
