:00:05. > :00:08.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today.

:00:08. > :00:10.In tonight's programme: Holding back the waters - rivers threaten

:00:10. > :00:20.to burst their banks, some roads have become impassable and sandbags

:00:20. > :00:23.

:00:23. > :00:27.are out in force. We are going to go into temporary

:00:27. > :00:33.accommodation for three or four months. We might get back in time

:00:33. > :00:35.for Easter eggs MAC! After ten years in jail, Omar Benguit, the

:00:35. > :00:40.man convicted of murdering a foreign language student, has his

:00:40. > :00:44.case referred to the court of appeal.

:00:44. > :00:49.I am convinced that the wrong man is doing this sentence for murder.

:00:49. > :00:52.Nothing I came across even began to suggest he was guilty.

:00:52. > :00:55.We take a look behind the scenes at what's being called the most

:00:55. > :00:57.valuable wine cellar in the world. He won a gold medal but that wasn't

:00:57. > :01:07.Olympic shooter Peter Wilson's defining moment of 2012 - find out

:01:07. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:15.The south is braced for further flooding over the weekend and into

:01:15. > :01:21.the Christmas period after up to 40 millimetres, or one-and-a-half

:01:22. > :01:26.inches of rain, fell in 24 hours. Train services and roads were

:01:26. > :01:30.disrupted in Dorset and Hampshire. Parts of West Sussex also suffered

:01:30. > :01:36.disruption. Many cars were stranded, but people's homes escaped largely

:01:36. > :01:41.unscathed. This evening there are 11 flood warnings in force on

:01:41. > :01:43.rivers stretching from Weymouth to Bosham in West Sussex. A severe

:01:43. > :01:49.flood warning was issued at Wallington near Fareham as a river

:01:49. > :01:59.threatened homes at high tide this afternoon. Peter Henley is there

:01:59. > :02:02.

:02:02. > :02:06.now. Peter, they've had a lucky escape, haven't they?

:02:06. > :02:11.At one stage they seemed to be under siege from the elements.

:02:11. > :02:17.There was a rising tide, cracks in the flood wall. On the feeling that

:02:17. > :02:21.they would get a flood just as they had 12 years ago. But now all water

:02:21. > :02:26.levels seen to have fallen away and people are being allowed back into

:02:26. > :02:28.their homes. Although there are shoring up that title walls. Police

:02:28. > :02:31.going house-to-house, advising people to pack up and leave due to

:02:31. > :02:33.the threat of a triple whammy of fast flowing water in the river

:02:33. > :02:37.Wallington from heavy rain, a rising tide is due to peak at

:02:37. > :02:43.5:00pm. And what really worried the experts, three cracks in the flood

:02:43. > :02:47.defence wall. A number of cracks have appeared

:02:47. > :02:50.under the sheer weight of water. Buses were brought in to evacuate

:02:50. > :02:58.25 houses to a local leisure centre. Ambulance crews arrived to help

:02:58. > :03:04.vulnerable residents. We have brought down the cat boxes

:03:04. > :03:10.and we're ready to go if we have to. Lessons had been learned from the

:03:10. > :03:17.last flood 12 years ago, but the memory is strong.

:03:17. > :03:20.2000 was the last time this place was flooded. We have got a brass

:03:21. > :03:24.plaque with the reminder. As water levels fell during the

:03:24. > :03:28.afternoon, the experts started to relax. But though homes tonight

:03:28. > :03:31.seem safe, local businesses that had to close are counting the cost.

:03:31. > :03:34.Amongst them, Sainsbury's superstore and petrol station. In

:03:34. > :03:43.the run-up to Christmas, their losses will run into hundreds of

:03:43. > :03:46.thousands of pounds. Many of the roads around year it

:03:46. > :03:51.would close by police for the sake of safety. That is what caused that

:03:51. > :03:55.loss of income for local traders. This evening council workers came

:03:55. > :04:03.to close the main road through the village again. The leader of the

:04:03. > :04:05.council actually stepped in to say, do not do that, keep the roads open.

:04:05. > :04:10.At Emsworth, several properties were flooded for the second time in

:04:10. > :04:13.two years. Residents have formed an action group to campaign for flood

:04:13. > :04:20.prevention work, but have been told there's not enough to fund a scheme

:04:20. > :04:24.there. Sean Killick reports. Gordon and Margaret surveyed the

:04:25. > :04:29.damage to their home. Last year their insurance companies spent

:04:29. > :04:33.50,000 on new flooring, carpets, and kitchen and we blustering

:04:33. > :04:38.following the previous flood. They spent four months in temporary

:04:38. > :04:43.accommodation and now they will have to do it all over again.

:04:43. > :04:50.The conservatory is nine inches deep in water. We're going to have

:04:50. > :04:57.to go into temporary accommodation again. We might get back in time

:04:57. > :05:01.for Easter if we're lucky. Roads here have flooded several times in

:05:01. > :05:10.recent years. Residents have spent thousands buying their own pumping

:05:10. > :05:20.equipment. I moved into the area of knowing that there was a flood risk.

:05:20. > :05:20.

:05:20. > :05:22.There has only been one severe fled in 46 years. The Environment Agency

:05:22. > :05:26.has a 1 million local flood prevention scheme but only two

:05:26. > :05:30.thirds of the money that it needs to build it. We are trying to

:05:30. > :05:35.identify some other contributors who could put money forward for

:05:35. > :05:43.this scheme to take it forward. We're going to look again at what

:05:43. > :05:48.we can do to help these people. Further along the main south coast

:05:48. > :05:55.junction was closed whilst workers tried to clear deep floodwater. And

:05:55. > :05:59.the A249, was also blocked. Motorists found themselves diverted

:05:59. > :06:04.from one flooded road if only to contend with something like this up

:06:04. > :06:10.ahead. This scene in Bognor Regis was all too familiar to many

:06:10. > :06:13.motorists across the south in the past few hours.

:06:13. > :06:17.Elsewhere in Hampshire, the New Forest came in for very heavy rain

:06:18. > :06:19.overnight and through much of the day. The major problem for the

:06:19. > :06:27.emergency services was motorists ignoring road closures and driving

:06:27. > :06:32.through flooded fords, as Chrissy Sturt reports.

:06:32. > :06:37.Wipers still working, this car is going nowhere. The driver was in a

:06:37. > :06:40.hurry to got his daughter to college. They ignored the road

:06:40. > :06:45.closure and decided to risk it. They had to escape through the

:06:45. > :06:51.windows of the car. Hampshire Fire Service said they were overwhelmed

:06:51. > :06:58.with calls. If you do not need to make the journey, do not make it.

:06:58. > :07:03.Stay at home. Your employers will understand. That is another

:07:03. > :07:07.incident coming in now for a water rescue. We have got people driving

:07:07. > :07:12.through forwards. Please do not do that, it is incredibly dangers.

:07:12. > :07:16.Some drivers heeded that advice and to turn around but others ploughed

:07:16. > :07:23.on past road closures, determined to keep going at a busy time of

:07:23. > :07:28.year. Others got into real difficulties. Here two people had

:07:28. > :07:33.be rescued. Yet again the Environment Agency was at full tilt,

:07:33. > :07:39.hurrying to open hatches to help water drain away. We're just making

:07:39. > :07:45.sure that everything is free to drain away to sea. And by doing

:07:45. > :07:52.this you may avoid properties been flooded? Exactly. This is as bad as

:07:52. > :07:57.I have seen it for many years. It was a terrible day on the

:07:57. > :08:03.railways after flooding. There was a pledge today that more would be

:08:03. > :08:07.done to improve drainage. We have done a lot. Unfortunately we have

:08:07. > :08:11.not got the solutions in place quickly enough. By next winter we

:08:11. > :08:16.will have but we have to work as fast as we can to try to improve

:08:16. > :08:22.the situation. It is not satisfactory for the customers.

:08:22. > :08:26.With more rain forecast, for the destruction in the countdown to

:08:26. > :08:29.Christmas is looking likely. But the wet weather is always fun for

:08:29. > :08:32.some. Further west, Dorset has also been

:08:32. > :08:35.hit by heavy rain and floodwaters. This is the A352 between Weymouth

:08:35. > :08:36.and Dorchester earlier this afternoon. Fire services in the

:08:36. > :08:39.county have been rescuing several vehicles from floodwaters

:08:39. > :08:44.throughout the day, including a caravan floating down a river in

:08:45. > :08:48.Moreton. Floodwaters have also been threatening homes and businesses in

:08:48. > :08:51.the Radipole Lake area of Weymouth. Emergency services were called in

:08:51. > :08:58.to lower the level of the lake by opening its sluice gates and using

:08:58. > :09:02.special high volume pumping equipment.

:09:02. > :09:06.And we have heard that trains have resumed between Brockenhurst and

:09:06. > :09:10.Bournemouth. A vineyard in Hampshire has gone in

:09:10. > :09:12.to administration. A poor harvest and lack of investment have been

:09:12. > :09:18.blamed for the situation at Wickham Vineyard in the Meon Valley which

:09:18. > :09:20.will mean the loss of 24 jobs. The company had provided wines for

:09:20. > :09:25.the Queen's Diamond Jubilee which were served to Her Majesty and

:09:25. > :09:28.Prince Phillip. Police hunting a gunman wanted for

:09:28. > :09:31.two robberies in the New Forest have made a further arrest. A 44-

:09:31. > :09:34.year old man from Lymington is currently being questioned. The

:09:34. > :09:36.arrest relates to a kidnapping and armed robbery in Lymington last

:09:36. > :09:43.Friday, and a further armed robbery in Brockenhurst earlier in the

:09:43. > :09:45.month. Two other men remain on police bail.

:09:45. > :09:50.A 49-year-old man from Havant has been arrested on suspicion of two

:09:51. > :09:53.attempted abductions in the town. One of the incidents was in Leigh

:09:53. > :09:57.Park on Tuesday when a 12-year-old girl was grabbed from behind near

:09:58. > :10:03.Middle Park Way. In a similar incident, a man attempted to grab

:10:03. > :10:06.an 11-year-old boy in Emsworth yesterday.

:10:06. > :10:09.The case of a man held for ten years for murdering a Korean

:10:09. > :10:14.student is being sent back to the Court of Appeal over concerns that

:10:14. > :10:16.his conviction is unsafe. Omar Benguit from Bournemouth was jailed

:10:16. > :10:25.in January 2005 for the murder of 26-year-old Korean language student,

:10:25. > :10:28.Jong Ok Shin, who was known as Oki. Oki was found stabbed to death on

:10:28. > :10:29.Malmesbury Park Road in Bournemouth in July 2002 Today the Criminal

:10:29. > :10:39.Cases Review Commission, which examines possible miscarriages of

:10:39. > :10:41.justice, announced it is to refer the case to the Court of Appeal.

:10:41. > :10:47.Part of Omar Benguit's case is based on the possibility that

:10:47. > :10:49.another man is responsible for the murder. Italian Danilo Restivo was

:10:49. > :10:56.jailed last year for the murder of Bournemouth mother of two Heather

:10:56. > :11:00.Barnett in November 2002. She was killed by Restivo five months after

:11:00. > :11:03.Oki Shin's death. The BBC has learned that Italian police warned

:11:03. > :11:11.Interpol that Restivo could be a potential suspect for Oki Shin's

:11:11. > :11:18.murder six weeks before Heather Barnett was murdered. Our Home

:11:18. > :11:23.Affairs correspondent Alex Forsyth has this exclusive report.

:11:23. > :11:28.Omar Benguit has spent 10 years in prison for murder. Now there is

:11:28. > :11:32.doubt over whether he is guilty at all. Right from the start we felt

:11:32. > :11:35.there had been as serious miscarriage of justice. And in the

:11:35. > :11:40.years since we have investigated the case we have uncovered nothing

:11:40. > :11:46.that would convince us other than that is true. Omar Benguit was

:11:46. > :11:49.found guilty of killing Oki Shin in Bournemouth into those none too.

:11:50. > :11:53.She was stabbed in the back as she made her way home from a night out.

:11:53. > :11:58.But it took three trials before he was convicted and his legal team

:11:58. > :12:02.have always maintained his innocence. There was no forensic

:12:02. > :12:07.evidence. This is a man who was supposed to have gotten out of a

:12:07. > :12:13.car and stabbed a young woman to death, got back into the car

:12:13. > :12:18.covered in blood and carrying the murder weapon. Omar Benguit's legal

:12:18. > :12:23.team saying during this recording of the journey Kyle show, a key

:12:23. > :12:28.prosecution witness changed to account of what happened that night.

:12:28. > :12:31.He had taken off his shirt and it had blood spatters. Criminologist

:12:31. > :12:36.Barry Loveday was one of the first to raise doubts about the

:12:36. > :12:40.conviction. I am utterly convinced of the wrong man is doing the

:12:40. > :12:46.sentence for murder. There is nothing that I came across that

:12:46. > :12:50.even began to suggest that he was guilty. Now the Criminal Cases

:12:50. > :12:55.Review Commission says this new evidence to suggest Danilo Restivo

:12:55. > :12:58.is a viable alternative suspect. He killed Bournemouth mother-of-two

:12:58. > :13:04.had have won it five months after the death of Oki Shin. We have seen

:13:04. > :13:09.documents that showing after the murder, Interpol was told about

:13:09. > :13:14.denote -- about develop the scheme will. Italian police said he was a

:13:14. > :13:17.suspect of the murder of a young woman in Italy, the case collapsed.

:13:17. > :13:23.At the time he lived just a few streets away from where Oki Shin

:13:23. > :13:28.died. You have to ask, how likely is that statistically the there

:13:28. > :13:34.were two people, took murderous pacing the streets of the same

:13:34. > :13:37.time? Did a big criminal cases review commission, the body that

:13:37. > :13:42.investigates possible miscarriages of justice, has referred the case

:13:42. > :13:45.back to the Court of Appeal. There will now be a further hearing when

:13:45. > :13:52.High Court judges will review the evidence to decide whether Omar

:13:52. > :13:56.Benguit is guilty or innocent. A lot of cases go to the Court of

:13:56. > :14:00.Appeal. Why is this one significant? Will the commission is

:14:00. > :14:04.the last chance saloon for appeals. They get a lot of referrals. But

:14:04. > :14:10.really send a rod for present back to the Court of Appeal. Are the

:14:10. > :14:15.past 15 years that is only around 500 cases and around 70% of those

:14:15. > :14:20.result in a successful appeal. So this does not mean that the

:14:20. > :14:24.conviction will be overturned but a family of Omar Benguit are ecstatic

:14:24. > :14:27.and say this is a major step forward on the road to proving he's

:14:27. > :14:31.innocent, of which they believe he is for stock ordered the police had

:14:32. > :14:37.to say. In a statement they said they could not comment because the

:14:37. > :14:40.legal processes are ongoing. But they did charge Omar Benguit with

:14:40. > :14:47.the original murder. At the time they clearly believed he had done

:14:47. > :14:52.it. I get the impression they do not think this was done a lot

:14:52. > :14:54.Restivo. But they may have to reinvestigate.

:14:54. > :14:58.The first of 130 new railway carriages to ease overcrowding on

:14:58. > :15:02.Southern Railway has rolled off the production line. It's thought a

:15:02. > :15:04.contract for further trains will be signed by the end of the week. The

:15:05. > :15:13.order is a lifeline for Britain's last remaining train manufacturer,

:15:13. > :15:18.in Derby. Our Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton reports.

:15:18. > :15:22.These trains are being built in record time. They were ordered

:15:22. > :15:26.exactly one year ago. By this time next year all of them will be

:15:26. > :15:32.carrying passengers. Four p Geoff Hoon was worked here since he left

:15:32. > :15:36.school, it has meant that he has kept his job. I have been here 38

:15:36. > :15:41.years. In those days we used a lot of wood but now it is more high-

:15:41. > :15:45.tech. It has changed completely from what it was. This factory has

:15:45. > :15:52.been shrinking. After losing a massive order for Thames Link

:15:52. > :15:55.trains, Bombardier shared roughly half of its workforce. It is still

:15:55. > :15:59.a hugely controversial decision to buy trains from Germany instead

:15:59. > :16:04.even though two years later, the contract has still not been signed.

:16:04. > :16:09.Derby has only two years of work. This and some underground trains.

:16:09. > :16:13.But the companies have the. It has given fantastic work for the

:16:13. > :16:19.engineering and project management teams. And next year we have a

:16:19. > :16:23.fantastic workload. These carriages cost around 1 million each. The

:16:23. > :16:28.first two are ready now. Next summer they will be delivered at

:16:28. > :16:37.the rate of five per week. Passengers on a daily basis will

:16:37. > :16:44.see many more seats available to them. These trains are absolutely

:16:44. > :16:49.brand new. They have got plug points at every seat. Their coveted

:16:49. > :16:54.throughout. There are splendid product. Passengers will certainly

:16:54. > :17:02.notice the difference. These will replace much older trains working

:17:02. > :17:07.from London Victoria to the south coast.

:17:07. > :17:10.Just getting some using that the 49 year-old man from Havant arrested

:17:10. > :17:16.on suspicion of to attended the factions in the town has been

:17:16. > :17:26.released from custody this evening with no further action. --

:17:26. > :17:27.attempted abductions. Now the sports news.

:17:27. > :17:30.Southampton will be without influential midfielder Adam Lallana

:17:30. > :17:33.for the start of the festive period, but manager Nigel Adkins today said

:17:33. > :17:37.he'd decided not to say publicly how long one of his star players

:17:37. > :17:41.will be out. Adkins injured a knee against Reading earlier this month,

:17:41. > :17:44.and has his leg in a brace. It has been speculated he faces a long

:17:44. > :17:54.period on the sidelines, but today Adkins would only take it a game at

:17:54. > :17:55.

:17:56. > :18:03.a time. He is progressing well. He is off

:18:03. > :18:10.the crutches. He will be available for the game against Sunderland on

:18:10. > :18:20.Saturday. That is all we are going to say. You can ask me the next

:18:20. > :18:23.question on the next game. Sussex cricket club have appointed

:18:24. > :18:27.a new Chief Executive to lead the club into the future. He's Zach

:18:27. > :18:29.Toumazi, who recently left his commercial role at Hampshire. He

:18:29. > :18:37.comes with a background in the financial world and has also worked

:18:37. > :18:43.at Surrey. So what's the challenge at Sussex? I think we have to put

:18:43. > :18:48.the place on the map. In terms of attendances going AB, I would like

:18:48. > :18:58.to seek revenue increasing. It is about using all the facilities all

:18:58. > :19:01.

:19:01. > :19:04.year round. All this week we're looking back at

:19:04. > :19:06.2012 and some of the amazing events, the Diamond Jubilee, the Torch

:19:06. > :19:10.Relay and the Olympics and Paralympics, with some of the

:19:10. > :19:12.people who were involved. For this last feature reflecting on our

:19:12. > :19:16.sporting memories of 2012, I've been to meet Olympic gold medallist

:19:16. > :19:18.Peter Wilson and his family in Dorset. Peter won the double trap

:19:19. > :19:28.in shooting and provided one of the great moments of the Games, as an

:19:29. > :19:33.

:19:33. > :19:38.emotional reunion with his father How did you feel going into the

:19:38. > :19:44.Olympics? I was confident but not overly confident. I set the world

:19:44. > :19:49.record earlier this year and I had a huge hike of confidence. Ameobi

:19:49. > :19:54.felt I was a bit better than I actually was. I had a bit of a drop

:19:54. > :20:00.in performance. I came pretty low down the pecking order. I was not

:20:00. > :20:05.happy with that. So I did a bit more training, it gives you an idea

:20:05. > :20:15.of how my brain was thinking about the Olympic Games. I had a bit of a

:20:15. > :20:16.

:20:16. > :20:24.roller-coaster. When he came back he was coming

:20:24. > :20:32.home to get the cows in, as it was reported. We only have four cows.

:20:32. > :20:42.Where does he get that competitive spirit from?! Probably from both of

:20:42. > :20:44.

:20:45. > :20:51.us. My father was the worst shot in England!

:20:51. > :20:56.I said to people I aged about 10 years in that 30 minute final.

:20:56. > :21:01.Especially in the last five to 10 minutes. You do feel the weight of

:21:01. > :21:05.the world on your shoulders. Everyone is nervous. For me it is

:21:05. > :21:12.about keeping as still as possible. And of course there is no pain

:21:12. > :21:17.barrier. It is just focusing, keeping it all in check. Keeping
