:02:11. > :02:14.with smoke damage. We are all a bit nervous, but trying to mint in a
:02:14. > :02:16.positive attitude. Despite what's happened, it's been business as
:02:16. > :02:21.usual. Andicars has around 200 vehicles operating across parts of
:02:21. > :02:25.East Hampshire and West Sussex and has plans to expand. Some of the
:02:25. > :02:29.cars had been parked here for safe keeping while the drivers were on

:03:48. > :03:52.educational special needs school in Hampshire are being urged to support
:03:52. > :03:55.it to help avoid closure. Stanbridge Earls School, near Romsey, was
:03:55. > :03:58.severely criticised for its handling of a rape claim by a pupil. A
:03:58. > :04:03.takeover by another school recently fell through. Now parents are being
:04:03. > :04:06.told they need to decide by the end of the week if they want to send
:04:06. > :04:11.their children there for the autumn term. Briony Leyland is following
:04:11. > :04:16.this. Briony, a tight deadline for
:04:16. > :04:20.parents? Yes. The school wants to open as usual in September, but it
:04:20. > :04:24.can only do that if it gets enough money from fees. In June, the number
:04:24. > :04:27.of pupils on the school roll was 189. The headteacher says next term
:04:27. > :04:31.the numbers will be lower, but the question is how much lower, bearing
:04:31. > :04:34.in mind the difficulties the school has faced and the fact some local
:04:34. > :04:38.education authorities, such as Dorset, are not placing new pupils
:04:38. > :04:41.there. Existing parents have been asked to make up their minds by
:04:41. > :04:44.Friday and pay fees by next Thursday. The headteacher won't say
:04:44. > :04:54.how many pupils are needed in order to open in September. She wants to
:04:54. > :04:59.encourage as many as possible to keep faith with the school. We are
:05:00. > :05:03.getting so many positive responses already. In just a day we have had a
:05:03. > :05:12.large number of e-mails confirming that the children will start in
:05:12. > :05:15.September. We are very optimistic. Based on one days worth of e-mails,
:05:15. > :05:18.we are confident will be in September. So what happens if the
:05:18. > :05:22.numbers don't stack up? Well, if too few pupils sign up the school will
:05:22. > :05:26.close. Any fees paid will be refunded. If they do get enough
:05:26. > :05:36.pupils, then work will continue to try to find a suitable partner to
:05:36. > :05:38.
:05:38. > :05:42.secure the school's future. It had been hoped More House School in
:05:42. > :05:52.Farnham would take it over, but that deal fell through last week. The

:05:52. > :05:57.headteacher says finding the right partner is crucial and not easy.
:05:57. > :06:02.It is important that we get the right fit. It is important we are

:06:06. > :06:10.it is quite a narrow fields and there are not a lot of institutions
:06:10. > :06:15.that offer what we offer. It is important to us that we are
:06:15. > :06:19.continuing to offer it. So, if no deal is done during the autumn term
:06:19. > :06:22.the school would then close? Parents have been told in a letter that if a
:06:22. > :06:25.suitable partner or funding stream isn't found during the autumn term
:06:25. > :06:32.the focus will switch to finding places for children at other
:06:32. > :06:35.schools. On top of all this, Stanbridge Earls is still under
:06:35. > :06:38.close scrutiny from the Department for Education. The school has to
:06:38. > :06:46.come up with an action plan to address Ofsted's latest findings by
:06:46. > :06:50.the end of August. From one school with a? Over its
:06:50. > :06:54.future, to one which has confirmed it won't open next month. An attempt
:06:54. > :06:59.to ease demand for primary school places in a Berkshire town has hit a
:06:59. > :07:01.stumbling block. Three new schools are being built in Wokingham, but
:07:01. > :07:04.one won't open next month as planned. That's because Wheatfield

:07:35. > :07:38.central government is to blame. followed the Department of education
:07:39. > :07:46.the whole way through this and have always been in contact with them.
:07:46. > :07:51.There was still a with them letting us know about the provider. The
:07:51. > :07:53.parents obviously need to know about places and they have made

:07:57. > :08:02.council caused the delay by not telling it who thirsts sponsor of
:08:02. > :08:06.the school was in town. What isn't in doubt is that there is a shortage
:08:07. > :08:11.of school places in the Woking Borough. Three new academies, of
:08:11. > :08:16.which Wheatfield Primary School was one, were meant to be the answer.
:08:16. > :08:19.have some very good local schools here. There is no reason why that a
:08:19. > :08:27.parent would want to take a leap into the dark when they can get

:08:36. > :08:42.primary school. It will be run by the same education foundation. It
:08:42. > :08:47.will be open on the 9th of September, but, as of now, only 19
:08:47. > :08:50.pupils will be starting here. The builders at Wheatfield Primary

:10:18. > :10:21.story in Southern England - a picturesque village up against plans
:10:21. > :10:24.for a big new housing development. This time the battle's in the
:10:24. > :10:27.historic village of Ampfield in Hampshire. Those fighting the

:11:13. > :11:16.are half-a-dozen listed buildings close to the site, as well as a
:11:16. > :11:18.famous par-three golf course designed by Henry Cotton. The
:11:18. > :11:27.proposal would include affordable homes, but protestors say it would
:11:27. > :11:32.be out of keeping with the character of the village. The impact of 39
:11:32. > :11:36.houses is much more than has ever been built at one stage in the
:11:36. > :11:42.centre of Ampfield. We are not against small clusters of houses
:11:42. > :11:45.which reflect the historic layouts of the area. There's already some
:11:45. > :11:47.large scale housing development nearby here at Abbotswood, but Test
:11:47. > :11:50.Valley has a problem many other planning authorities share. Though
:11:50. > :11:55.they have given permission for their target number of new homes,
:11:55. > :11:58.developers have chosen not to build all of them. At the moment, there
:11:58. > :12:02.are some 1,300 homes in the area with permission that have not been
:12:02. > :12:11.built. Councillor Mark Cooper, who is on the Borough's Planning
:12:11. > :12:14.Committee, says that puts added pressure on sensitive sites. We have
:12:14. > :12:19.a shortfall of housing supply. That means other developers can come in
:12:19. > :12:22.and say I want a planning application, and Test Valley is very
:12:22. > :12:29.hard pressed to refuse them because they haven't met their five-year
:12:29. > :12:33.housing supply, 196 every year, year in, year out. The planning
:12:33. > :12:36.application for the 39 homes here is due to be heard later this month.
:12:36. > :12:40.The Church of England has been asked for permission to analyse remains
:12:40. > :12:43.found in a grave in Winchester that are thought to be those of King
:12:43. > :12:46.Alfred the Great. The bones were exhumed from St Bartholomew's Church
:12:47. > :12:56.in March. Now the Hyde 900 group has put in an application to perform
:12:57. > :12:57.
:12:57. > :13:02.tests on them. Mark Sanders reports. Has sung Bartholomew's been nursing
:13:02. > :13:08.a secret? It has long been suspected that the remains of King Alfred
:13:08. > :13:14.rested here. In March, the remains were exhumed and the local community
:13:14. > :13:22.group has applied to the diocese to test if the bones are Alfred the
:13:22. > :13:26.great's. Carbon dating is the first thing. The next step would be a
:13:26. > :13:33.strontium isotope analysis, which shows diet particularly in the first
:13:33. > :13:40.15 years. It shoes were someone grew up. With Alfred, for example, we
:13:40. > :13:49.know that he spent five years in Rome. There could be something that
:13:49. > :13:54.shows us that, which would be amazing. DNA testing could be an
:13:54. > :13:58.option, but finding a descendant of Alfred could prove trickier as he
:13:58. > :14:02.died almost 600 years earlier. It is thought the bones of Alfred could
:14:02. > :14:07.have been buried at Saint Bartholomew's in the 19th-century,
:14:07. > :14:17.having been removed from the remaining -- having been removed
:14:17. > :14:17.
:14:17. > :14:23.from Hyde Abbey nearby. The English army had been camped on these
:14:23. > :14:31.fields. For Alfred, this is a critical moment. We either retreat,
:14:31. > :14:35.go forward. The remains were in assume because of worries about
:14:35. > :14:41.security following publicity surrounding the discovery of the

:14:51. > :14:54.A scheme to create a new habitat for wildlife in West Sussex is being

:14:57. > :15:01.the Arundel Wetland Centre to reflect the landscape of the Arun
:15:01. > :15:09.Valley. Part of the project involves creating an area for kingfishers to
:15:09. > :15:15.nest. Katy Austin reports. It is certainly an enviable
:15:15. > :15:19.location. But, even here, the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust at
:15:19. > :15:22.Arundel, nature needs a little help. And a helping hand has been on the
:15:22. > :15:25.arm of a mechanical digger. The Arun River Life Project has meant
:15:25. > :15:30.re-landscaping an area known as Swan Lake. It is about restoring a
:15:30. > :15:34.habitat that reflects the wider landscape of the Arun Valley. It is
:15:34. > :15:38.important to provide a habitat for a broad range of wildlife. This is
:15:38. > :15:48.going to be the Des Res of the glittering stars of the river bank -
:15:48. > :15:53.the Kingfisher. During the winter we get up to six or more kingfishers on
:15:53. > :15:59.the site, which is fantastic. In the summer they have to go off-site to
:15:59. > :16:04.breed. The problem here is that there was no suitable vertical bank
:16:04. > :16:09.over the water which kingfishers love for burrowing into and making
:16:09. > :16:13.them nest. There have kingfishers breeding in front of the viewing
:16:13. > :16:16.gallery would be fantastic. This area was only filled with water in
:16:16. > :16:19.June. This landscape may look a touch like a moonscape at the
:16:19. > :16:23.moment, but vegetation is beginning to take hold. Wetland plants like
:16:23. > :16:27.the Marsh Marigold have been put in. It's hoped that it's only a matter
:16:27. > :16:36.of time before birds like the tufted duck feel at home and other wildlife
:16:36. > :16:39.begins to thrive. Now you may have heard that the new

:16:42. > :16:46.Charlotte Green will take over from James Alexander Gordon. That news

:16:50. > :16:54.Yacht Squadron at Cowes on the Isle of Wight has voted to allow women to
:16:54. > :16:57.become members for the first time ever. The vote has to be ratified by

:17:07. > :17:10.
:17:10. > :17:15.history. Sean Killick reports. Barbershop singers, a tradition that
:17:15. > :17:18.started life as an all-male social pastime, then changed its tune. But
:17:18. > :17:24.perhaps the world's most was the just sailing club is also getting in
