:00:13. > :00:20.Care home closures ` protesters step up their campaign as councillors
:00:21. > :00:26.meet to discuss the plans. I thought he was going to go our way and that
:00:27. > :00:28.we'd got through to them. One`woman's story of how taxi

:00:44. > :00:48.those caught up in the Philippines typhoon.
:00:49. > :00:51.And stirring it up in time for Christmas. Everyone is stood there
:00:52. > :01:04.wishing. The closure of three care homes for
:01:05. > :01:09.the elderly in Hampshire has come a step closer, despite vocal
:01:10. > :01:12.opposition to the plans. Relatives of residents in the homes affected
:01:13. > :01:20.gathered outside the county council's headquarters this morning
:01:21. > :01:23.to voice their opposition. But despite their pleas, a scrutiny
:01:24. > :01:26.committee approved plans for the closures, which are part of
:01:27. > :01:32.wide`ranging changes to adult social care. James Ingham reports.
:01:33. > :01:37.Their feelings were clear ` closing care homes will be the elderly
:01:38. > :01:41.residents vulnerable. Many of these protesters have relatives in the
:01:42. > :01:47.homes that are due to close. It's excellent care at Deeside. She's
:01:48. > :01:52.back reading, back doing her knitting. I'm just worried she's
:01:53. > :01:55.going to revert back into herself. The council are just looking for an
:01:56. > :02:02.excuse to get rid of care homes and save money. It would be a
:02:03. > :02:07.devastating impact on my mother. She wouldn't understand being moved.
:02:08. > :02:11.Initially four, but now three, homes are recommended for closure. The
:02:12. > :02:15.county council says alternative accommodation will be found for
:02:16. > :02:19.current residents but in future it wants more people in so`called extra
:02:20. > :02:26.care homes, where they live in their own flat is but with help when it's
:02:27. > :02:32.needed. I think this is the future for care for elderly people. It's a
:02:33. > :02:35.situation where people are able to lead independent lives as far as
:02:36. > :02:44.possible. Much, much better than going into a small care home where
:02:45. > :02:52.they have limited room. Extra care suits Tony and Joan. They are menu
:02:53. > :02:57.flat run by a housing association and a private company, with some
:02:58. > :03:01.care paid for by the council. You've got care all the time. If you want
:03:02. > :03:05.anybody, you just press the button and they're here. The other day I
:03:06. > :03:11.didn't feel great and one of the carers came downstairs to help me
:03:12. > :03:16.with a trade with my food on. So they're very good. After listening
:03:17. > :03:20.to impassioned pleas for the homes to remain open, a council scrutiny
:03:21. > :03:26.committee today voted overwhelmingly to approve the closures. I feel
:03:27. > :03:29.gutted. I thought it was going to go our way at the beginning. I thought
:03:30. > :03:34.we'd perhaps got through to them but at the end of the day, they haven't
:03:35. > :03:39.heard a thing. Campaigners say they'll fight on but it is unlikely
:03:40. > :03:47.that the council's Cabinet will vote any differently when they make a
:03:48. > :03:50.final decision next month. People in West Sussex are calling
:03:51. > :03:53.for better care for cancer patients following the delay in the opening
:03:54. > :03:58.of a new radiotherapy centre in Worthing. Campaigners say many
:03:59. > :04:03.patients are travelling three or four hours a day to Surrey or
:04:04. > :04:06.Hampshire. The NHS has apologised inconveniencing patients but says it
:04:07. > :04:12.is meeting treatment target times and remains committed to a new unit
:04:13. > :04:16.in West Sussex. Judy was diagnosed with breast
:04:17. > :04:20.cancer last April. For 15 days she had radiotherapy but because of
:04:21. > :04:25.demand in nearby Brighton, she had to travel to haven't in Hampshire.
:04:26. > :04:31.Campaigners say it is costing BHS up to ?150 a time for such journeys.
:04:32. > :04:36.Julie believes it is money wasted. It's not just about the money ` it's
:04:37. > :04:40.about the fact that when you feel your worst you are having to travel
:04:41. > :04:48.to have treatment that you have to have and it has to be done within a
:04:49. > :04:55.certain time scale. Julie lives two minutes away from this hospital,
:04:56. > :04:59.which is planned to have a new cancer centre but the opening date
:05:00. > :05:03.of next December has just been postponed. This man takes patients
:05:04. > :05:07.to Hampshire and says he knows of some who have found the journey too
:05:08. > :05:10.much. Because they have to travel for such a long time ` not
:05:11. > :05:18.necessarily a long distance, though from Worthing to Portsmouth is 50
:05:19. > :05:22.miles ` because they are having to do it five days a week, and it can
:05:23. > :05:28.be two hours each way, and they have to do it for six weeks, some of them
:05:29. > :05:29.just give up. Brighton and Sussex says it is exceeding treatment
:05:30. > :05:54.target times. A breast screening unit is due to
:05:55. > :06:00.open here in the next couple of months but there's no new date for
:06:01. > :06:02.the radiotherapy unit. HMS Dragon arrived back in
:06:03. > :06:05.Portsmouth today after eight months in the Gulf. It was the Type 45

:06:47. > :06:50.people across the UK are continuing to raise funds and gather equipment
:06:51. > :06:54.and clothing. One woman in Hampshire has had an overwhelming response to
:06:55. > :06:57.her appeal for donations. So much so, she and her family can barely

:07:04. > :07:07.This is usually a typical house in a residential street in the town of
:07:08. > :07:13.Whitchurch. But since Typhoon Haiyan, domesticity here has given
:07:14. > :07:16.way to the demands of the depot. The lounge is the central sorting
:07:17. > :07:22.office, the playroom is for packing only, and the conveyor belt is at
:07:23. > :07:30.full capacity. As for the double garage, you won't find a parking
:07:31. > :07:33.space in there. It just seems to have been passed on, word`of`mouth,
:07:34. > :07:39.with people contacting friends asking them to help. It has just
:07:40. > :07:42.spiralled massively into this. Just coming here and doing stuff,
:07:43. > :07:48.bringing stuffing, packaging it up, knowing it's going to get to the
:07:49. > :07:52.people is far more rewarding. You are all busy people with full lives
:07:53. > :07:55.` how have you found the time? Microbrew there is always time. If
:07:56. > :08:01.you've got time to sit down for a coffee, you've got time to wrap up a

:08:05. > :08:09.because she's from the Philippines ` and wants to help. I have millions
:08:10. > :08:12.of countrymen who are affected. You know how many have passed away and
:08:13. > :08:16.there are still plenty injured out there. Millions out there still
:08:17. > :08:19.don't have access to clean water, to food and to shelter. It was Aizel's
:08:20. > :08:24.Facebook post that got the ball rolling. One of her relations took
:08:25. > :08:30.these photos. Sharing them on Facebook sparked a big response.
:08:31. > :08:35.This gives you some idea of what has been donated so far. We've got

:09:00. > :09:02.A petition has gained nearly 1,800 signatures from Wokingham residents
:09:03. > :09:06.who are against a ?95 million development in the town. The plans
:09:07. > :09:09.for Elms Field would see new homes, a supermarket and a hotel. But
:09:10. > :09:12.locals say they would lose nearly half their open park space.
:09:13. > :09:15.Councillors say developing the park is the only way to regenerate the
:09:16. > :09:17.town and that the issue will be debated at a special council
:09:18. > :09:27.meeting. Micro If we don't do it, the town will
