:00:00. > :00:10.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:

:00:11. > :00:19.Tributes to the innocent man who took just one sip from a fizzy drink

:00:20. > :00:22.laced with fatal amounts of cocaine. He was a wonderful man and would

:00:23. > :00:25.help you when you needed him. Walking out ` firefighters stage the

:00:26. > :00:30.first of two strikes over pensions on a busy festive weekend.

:00:31. > :00:40.A family shop for 40 years faces closure because of the impact of

:00:41. > :00:43.pedestrianisation outside. I do not know a single person who

:00:44. > :00:50.does not shop here. We are devastated we will lose it. And the

:00:51. > :00:59.pressure is on the new Pompey boss looking for a win this weekend.

:01:00. > :01:03.More details have emerged about the fizzy drink contaminated with

:01:04. > :01:07.cocaine that killed a man from Gosport. Joromie Lewis worked for an

:01:08. > :01:10.import company and was helping unload a consignment of drinks from

:01:11. > :01:16.the Caribbean at a warehouse in Southampton. He took just one sip

:01:17. > :01:21.from a bottle of Pear`D, immediately became ill and never recovered. He

:01:22. > :01:27.leaves behind a wife and three`year`old daughter. Joe

:01:28. > :01:30.Campbell reports. Former Royal Navy sailor Joromie

:01:31. > :01:34.Lewis was known for his stand against drugs, drink and gambling.

:01:35. > :01:39.In words of one friend, he was a good guy. He was a regular

:01:40. > :01:43.worshipper here at this church with his wife and their daughter, who

:01:44. > :01:48.turned three years old on the very day he died last week. He was

:01:49. > :01:52.described here is a big man, a bighearted man, who would do

:01:53. > :01:57.anything to help somebody out. In fact, he was helping out somebody on

:01:58. > :02:00.the day he died. They had been handling and imported cargo of juice

:02:01. > :02:05.drink which had been brought in by a third party from the Caribbean. It

:02:06. > :02:09.was hot and thirsty work and once it had been taken away from the

:02:10. > :02:13.warehouse where he was employed, he saw a bottle had been left behind.

:02:14. > :02:19.He took a swig quenches first and moments later, was seriously ill.

:02:20. > :02:28.The man who baptised him was today making preparations for Joromie

:02:29. > :02:32.Lewis's funeral. Thursday, about 11 o'clock, I had somebody crying. It

:02:33. > :02:36.took me a while to figure out it was his wife. She said he was in

:02:37. > :02:39.Southampton general and on a life`support machine and they were

:02:40. > :02:46.about to turn it off. My wife and I rushed on down to the hospital. He

:02:47. > :02:50.was dead by the time we got there. Per day is a popular drink in parts

:02:51. > :02:54.of the Caribbean. These bottles were on sale there today. The makers

:02:55. > :03:00.described the shipment that killed Mr Lewis as contraband, saying

:03:01. > :03:03.Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed the bottle was camped with ``

:03:04. > :03:14.tampered with. Ex`pats today told us two kilos of

:03:15. > :03:17.cocaine could be dissolved in just one litre of water and police say

:03:18. > :03:24.drink so regularly used by smugglers to hide imported drugs. It has been

:03:25. > :03:30.used in the past and tragically, it has gone horribly wrong. Mr Lewis

:03:31. > :03:37.completely innocently has had a drink of this that has fallen out of

:03:38. > :03:40.a dispatch from his warehouse. Mr Lewis' family are preparing for the

:03:41. > :03:53.funeral after Christmas so relatives can fly in from overseas for the

:03:54. > :03:57.service. A man who raped a school girl in Berkshire when she was drunk

:03:58. > :04:00.has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. The girl had kept quiet

:04:01. > :04:03.about the attack by 51`year`old Robert Hawkins for over a decade.

:04:04. > :04:07.She finally found the courage to tell the police he had raped her

:04:08. > :04:10.when she was a young teenager after serving as a juror herself on a rape

:04:11. > :04:14.trial. Nikki Mitchell reports. The girl who was raped is now in her

:04:15. > :04:16.20s, and it was he that Reading Crown Court last year that she was

:04:17. > :04:21.called for jury service. She was a juror hearing a case of a man

:04:22. > :04:24.accused of child abuse. Given that she herself had been raped when she

:04:25. > :04:29.was 13 years old, the trial had a profound effect on her. The day

:04:30. > :04:32.after it ended, she walked into reading police station to report

:04:33. > :04:38.that she had also been a rape victim. This is the man

:04:39. > :04:42.responsible, 51`year`old Robert Hawkins from reading. He waited

:04:43. > :04:45.until she and her friends were drunk before raping her in the bedroom of

:04:46. > :04:52.a house he was staying in 12 years ago. She blacked out during the

:04:53. > :04:56.attack. The charity Rape Crisis believe only one in seven women who

:04:57. > :05:02.experience sexual violence reported to police. Why is that? If you have

:05:03. > :05:08.not been believed, Johnston blamed. A fear of the perpetrator. If they

:05:09. > :05:11.hear stories about low conviction rate is poor treatment by the

:05:12. > :05:16.courts, that can be even more off`putting. In sentencing Robin ``

:05:17. > :05:20.Robert Hawkins to 11 years in prison, the judge said the rape had

:05:21. > :05:25.been a girl's first sexual experience and that afterwards she

:05:26. > :05:28.went off the rails. Her behaviour change completely, she self harmed,

:05:29. > :05:33.she had nightmares, she took drugs and got into trouble with social

:05:34. > :05:39.services. The judge told Hawkins, that is the effect you're selfish

:05:40. > :05:42.act had on her. The court held Hawkins has been convicted of

:05:43. > :05:44.numerous crimes and this is the second time he has been jailed for

:05:45. > :05:47.rape. Firefighters across the South have

:05:48. > :05:52.just walked out this evening on another strike. It is part of

:05:53. > :05:55.ongoing industrial action over pensions. Fire and Rescue Services

:05:56. > :06:02.are asking the public to take extra care on what is usually the busiest

:06:03. > :06:07.weekend for Christmas parties. Those who are still working this evening

:06:08. > :06:12.to provide cover have asked the public to call only if it is a real

:06:13. > :06:18.emergency. We will have 50% of resources as we normally do. But you

:06:19. > :06:24.dial 999, it may be slower than normal. We will be doing our best to

:06:25. > :06:29.get as quickly as possible. Colin Daulby if you need us. `` collars

:06:30. > :06:32.only if you need us. Laura Trant is live for us this

:06:33. > :06:35.evening in Salisbury. Here in Salisbury, along with fire

:06:36. > :06:39.stations across the country, firefighters walked out and went on

:06:40. > :06:46.strike at six o'clock in an ongoing dispute over pensions. There have

:06:47. > :06:49.been four strikes since September. This, the fifth strike and the sixth

:06:50. > :06:54.tomorrow, will last for four hours from six till 10pm. It's over

:06:55. > :06:57.Government plans to raise firefighters' retirement age from 55

:06:58. > :07:04.to 60 and to increase their individual pension contributions.

:07:05. > :07:07.The FBU says it would mean if firefighters between the ages of

:07:08. > :07:14.55`60 fail fitness tests and get the sack, then they would lose out on

:07:15. > :07:20.pensions. But the Government says the offer is fair and one of the

:07:21. > :07:24.most generous in the public sector. But in light of plans for MPs' pay

:07:25. > :07:28.going up by 11%, anger at the Government's intentions for

:07:29. > :07:35.firefighters has intensified. We asked you to contact us on our

:07:36. > :07:38.Facebook page and share your views. We were inundated with your

:07:39. > :08:07.comments. Here are just a fear of them. `` just a couple.

:08:08. > :08:12.As we heard earlier, the Fire Service are warning members of the

:08:13. > :08:17.public to take extra care when the strike is taking place. Things like

:08:18. > :08:19.candles and festive lighting at this time of year are particularly

:08:20. > :08:29.dangerous, and they are asking people to be extra vigilant. The

:08:30. > :08:33.leader of West Sussex County Council claims there are no bombshells in

:08:34. > :08:35.plans to cut ?60 million from the council's budget over the next two

:08:36. > :08:38.years. Proposals discussed today include cuts to adult social care

:08:39. > :08:42.and children's services. But an extra ?30 million will be spent on

:08:43. > :08:45.resurfacing unclassified roads. West Sussex also hopes to freeze its

:08:46. > :08:54.council tax for a fourth year running.

:08:55. > :08:58.We will always look to see that it will not affect people. That is the

:08:59. > :09:01.first priority. A lot of it is looking at how we do things and

:09:02. > :09:04.where we commission services and the way we do it. That will mean that

:09:05. > :09:15.perhaps we'll be doing it a bit cheaper, but the end result is just

:09:16. > :09:19.the same. Two air Ambulance Services in the South remain temporarily

:09:20. > :09:22.grounded today, after a fault was found in a similar aircraft. The

:09:23. > :09:25.Thames Valley, and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulances all operate

:09:26. > :09:29.the same type of helicopter as the one that crashed on a pub in

:09:30. > :09:31.Glasgow. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been cleared

:09:32. > :09:38.to fly again following safety checks.

:09:39. > :09:43.Stay with us, because we will have the sport, not. We will be looking

:09:44. > :09:48.at three of the contenders hoping to be Sports Personality of the Year.

:09:49. > :09:52.That is happening on Sunday. They will be finding out whether Pompey

:09:53. > :09:59.can actually get a win with the new manager. As was that, we will have

:10:00. > :10:03.the weather. Our reporter is inherently because an Advent

:10:04. > :10:05.calendar opens with a difference. Christmas spirit and community

:10:06. > :10:07.spirit go hand`in`hand here in Henley as they bring the traditional

:10:08. > :10:28.Advent calendar to life. A Hampshire MP is warning people

:10:29. > :10:31.there's no need to pay companies to renew your driving licence and if

:10:32. > :10:34.you're over 70, renewing costs nothing. Freda Kerslake, who lives

:10:35. > :10:36.in Horndean, unknowingly paid a company called drivinglicenceuk.com

:10:37. > :10:40.?80. They've now agreed to refund her money. Ena Miller has been to

:10:41. > :10:44.meet her. I only use the car, really, to

:10:45. > :10:51.travel locally or to go to the shops. I find it so difficult

:10:52. > :10:54.walking now but I do need it. When this woman made a mistake renewing

:10:55. > :10:59.her driving licence, she literally paid for that. When I said to a

:11:00. > :11:02.friend, I have applied for my driving licence over the phone, so

:11:03. > :11:07.that is out of the way and it cost ?80, she said, it shouldn't cost

:11:08. > :11:17.that. You are over 70. Well, I needed to, so... `` and 82 years

:11:18. > :11:21.old. At Ascot to be refunded. `` I asked for it to be refund. She

:11:22. > :11:35.unwittingly it is perfectly legal and they make

:11:36. > :11:39.terms clear. I suspect you're looking for people in a hurry. But

:11:40. > :12:00.how easy is it to make the the Office of Fair Trading

:12:01. > :12:06.investigations say it is happening all the time. There is a fine line

:12:07. > :12:12.between whether they are legal or not. They use quite a bit of small

:12:13. > :12:20.print. Is it difficult for you to solve this? It is. If you stop this,

:12:21. > :12:25.another will pop up. The company refused to comment but has now given

:12:26. > :12:29.Frida Ely fun. `` a refund. It is the sort of store that could

:12:30. > :12:32.be really useful over this festive period. Akram's in Portsmouth stocks

:12:33. > :12:35.every type of Asian spice, along with Chinese, Thai and West Indian

:12:36. > :12:38.delicacies. But it is threatened with closure, after the road that

:12:39. > :12:42.it's on was pedestrianised and takings dropped by half. Now a

:12:43. > :12:48.campaign is underway to save it, as Peter Henley reports.

:12:49. > :12:53.Whether it is animal, vegetable or mineral salts, Akron has every

:12:54. > :13:00.variety from every corner of the globe. It is an institution at the

:13:01. > :13:05.heart of Southsea for 40 years. But after parking spaces were removed

:13:06. > :13:11.outside, taking supplemented. We're behind wages and with your trusty

:13:12. > :13:16.Bill, paying rates. If it carries on, I do not know what will happen.

:13:17. > :13:19.Portsmouth City Council see the half a million Pendse are spent on

:13:20. > :13:25.pedestrianisation is well spent, because they are trying to create a

:13:26. > :13:27.cafe culture in Southsea. Some say the pedestrianisation is a step in

:13:28. > :13:32.the right direction. I find it easier. I would not mind if it was

:13:33. > :13:41.just pavements, but it is nice knowing this is a wider area. But

:13:42. > :13:44.deliveries are real problems. Goods have to be taken to the shops on

:13:45. > :13:53.foot. The signs are not clear. Motorists are regularly confused. I

:13:54. > :14:00.can see 30 miles an up the... And abroad are still a route. This needs

:14:01. > :14:03.to be for traffic and businesses. At night, it is a place of anti`social

:14:04. > :14:08.behaviour with a lot of drinking. That is not acceptable. It is

:14:09. > :14:12.residential as well. I do not know the single person who does not,

:14:13. > :14:18.choppy. We are devastated that we could lose it. `` does not, choppy.

:14:19. > :14:23.Three generations of this family have worked here. This man could be

:14:24. > :14:26.the last of his generation to work here.

:14:27. > :14:30.How about running up and down the highest mountain in the world? The

:14:31. > :14:37.Everest Marathon is known as one of the hardest marathons. Snow, ice,

:14:38. > :14:40.rough tracks and a lack of oxygen. The man they call Running Rob, who

:14:41. > :14:44.lives in Farheam, came into the studio to tell me how he coped with

:14:45. > :14:51.all the challenges a mountain can throw at you.

:14:52. > :14:57.It starts at the place that is about 16,000 feet. It runs down

:14:58. > :15:02.effectively, you know those climbs in at the size of Ben Nevis, to 3400

:15:03. > :15:07.metres. So you're permanently going up? Deal mac go down gradually,

:15:08. > :15:15.about two and a bit thousand metres. 16,000 feet. Someone told me

:15:16. > :15:19.you may get 50% of the oxygen you would get like we are here. That has

:15:20. > :15:28.a huge impact, doesn't it? Deal mac it does. `` it does. When I first

:15:29. > :15:35.went to that distance, it took me 20 minutes. When I got the start line,

:15:36. > :15:41.it was better. You do a lot of endurance running. How does this

:15:42. > :15:45.compare? It was very tough. I learnt a lot about myself. I was quite ill

:15:46. > :15:50.before I started the race and when I got to the halfway point and

:15:51. > :15:53.realised I had nothing left and still had another half marathon to

:15:54. > :16:00.run, I found it incredibly tough. Why did you do it? About three years

:16:01. > :16:03.ago, my father died of cancer. When he was struggling for breath, I

:16:04. > :16:07.decided that every time I got stuck for breath, I would raise money for

:16:08. > :16:12.charity. The cause of that, I did the marathon two years ago and this

:16:13. > :16:22.this year. And how did it compare to the last one? It was very different.

:16:23. > :16:25.It is the Sahara Desert. At one point it was 65 degrees when I was

:16:26. > :16:30.running that. It is a multi stage race. This one is just one single

:16:31. > :16:35.stage over one single day. Did you ever get scared doing it? Everyone

:16:36. > :16:38.says when you do a marathon, you reach that wall and you do not know

:16:39. > :16:44.what you can go forward, beyond that. This is very different. You're

:16:45. > :16:47.not just reaching a while, you have a 16,000 feet altitude and the rest

:16:48. > :16:53.of it. Did you become worried about your health and condition? Yeah,

:16:54. > :16:58.seven. I was struggling after seven miles. There was many doctors on the

:16:59. > :17:04.route, running along. A doctor was following me. I was quite worried

:17:05. > :17:09.because every time I hit an inkling, my body was filling up with lactic

:17:10. > :17:15.acid and were struggling. What sort of person are you that you won't to

:17:16. > :17:20.keep doing these? There are lots of things my friends and family would

:17:21. > :17:26.say. Perhaps not repeatable! And someone who will not give up. In a

:17:27. > :17:31.way, I proved that by doing this race, because I really thought I had

:17:32. > :17:33.it partway through. I think generally, it is the tenacity to

:17:34. > :17:39.keep going and raise as much money as you can for charity. And your

:17:40. > :17:53.last race is going to be where? The Arctic Circle. You are bonkers, Aja?

:17:54. > :17:57.Probably, yes X, `` yes! He is a wonderful man raising a

:17:58. > :18:00.massive amount of money for different charities depending on the

:18:01. > :18:05.endurance marathon he does. We wish them well, particularly in the

:18:06. > :18:10.Arctic. Time for the sport now. Shall we talk Sports Personality of

:18:11. > :18:14.the Year? We have done so well. Sunday night, everyone will be

:18:15. > :18:17.tuning in. Sunday night sees one of the big

:18:18. > :18:21.nights in the sporting calendar, the choice of the BBC Sports Personality

:18:22. > :18:25.of the Year. Now the award is celebrating its 60th anniversary

:18:26. > :18:28.this year, so it's a big one. And of the ten sporting heroes in

:18:29. > :18:34.contention for the title of 2013, no less than three are from the South.

:18:35. > :18:38.Bob Everett reports. Without the presence of a certain

:18:39. > :18:46.Andy Murray, Tony McCoy may well have been the case' favourite. He

:18:47. > :18:49.has broken most of the bones in his body at least once, in jewels all

:18:50. > :18:53.the usual deprivations in force by the need to keep his weight down,

:18:54. > :19:00.get his bravery and skill as brought him an unsurpassed 4000 national

:19:01. > :19:05.winners. In a year of firsts, don't discount Justin Rose. His first

:19:06. > :19:11.major win in the US Open back in August was the first English win in

:19:12. > :19:15.the tournament 443 years, a just reward for the work he and his

:19:16. > :19:21.family had put in since he was teenage schoolboy in Hampshire. Sir

:19:22. > :19:25.Ben Ainslie must have a chance as well. He inspired team America to

:19:26. > :19:29.come back from the brink of defeat and win the America's Cup and has

:19:30. > :19:33.carved out a unique place for himself in yachting history. It is

:19:34. > :19:39.not the first time he has been nominated. Could this be his year?

:19:40. > :19:44.And while we're at it, let's not forget this man, his tireless work

:19:45. > :19:53.and grass`roots cricket won him BBC South's unsung hero award. Can he

:19:54. > :19:56.pick national award? Let's hope so. We have had the few winners of the

:19:57. > :19:58.unsung hero award. The weekend's Premier League

:19:59. > :20:00.football programme sees eighth`placed Southampton visit

:20:01. > :20:04.Newcastle, who are immediately above them in the table. Saints have

:20:05. > :20:07.stuttered of late ` last week's draw with Manchester City ended a run of

:20:08. > :20:11.three straight defeats, and they still have a few injury worries for

:20:12. > :20:18.the trip to St James' Park, where one of their former managers awaits

:20:19. > :20:22.them. And certainly looking forward to

:20:23. > :20:29.seeing some of my old players thou done brilliantly. They were all

:20:30. > :20:33.there in the first division with me. That site, and look forward to

:20:34. > :20:36.seeing. It is a game I really want to win.

:20:37. > :20:40.It's an important weekend for the new Portsmouth manager Richie

:20:41. > :20:43.Barker. He's got the unenviable job of stopping the rot at Pompey, who

:20:44. > :20:47.have lost their last seven games in a row. So the pressure is already on

:20:48. > :20:50.for the former Crawley boss. James Ingham reports.

:20:51. > :20:54.It is just four days since Richie Barker's arrival at Fratton Park. To

:20:55. > :20:57.say he has had to do to the ground running is an understatement.

:20:58. > :21:01.Imposing his philosophy on the players has had to happen fast to

:21:02. > :21:08.take the club out of freefall. So far, so good it seems on that score.

:21:09. > :21:18.The most important thing is we win and lose together as a teen. We set

:21:19. > :21:24.yourself goals. We need confidence back into them. We need to get them

:21:25. > :21:28.playing with no fear. Obviously, that can be helped with the fans

:21:29. > :21:35.coming and coming up in the numbers and really getting behind us. It all

:21:36. > :21:37.sounds good, but Pompey fans will be hoping the on pitch action against

:21:38. > :21:45.Newport matches the pre`match rhetoric.
