:00:00. > :00:00.arrives on Friday. Can't wait! That's all from

:00:00. > :00:09.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:

:00:10. > :00:12.A Reading man is charged with the murder of teenager Jayden Parkinson

:00:13. > :00:15.` police are still searching for her body.

:00:16. > :00:19.Under investigation ` 50 MoD police officers. It's alleged they failed

:00:20. > :00:24.to complete routine patrols at one of Berkshire's two nuclear weapons

:00:25. > :00:28.factories. A ribbon for Evey ` how the tragedy

:00:29. > :00:39.of the girl behind a Christmas drink`drive campaign has captured

:00:40. > :00:43.public imagination. If you had the slightest suspicion that one person

:00:44. > :00:49.in your family is taking the keys to a car when they shouldn't be, then

:00:50. > :00:53.have the courage and stop them. And slots of fun ` we tell the story

:00:54. > :01:02.behind Scalextric ` a Christmas favourite invented in Hampshire. One

:01:03. > :01:09.of the back wheels is hard plastic and the other one is soft rubber. It

:01:10. > :01:13.is a very supple De mics simple reason for that, which is to make

:01:14. > :01:21.sure that the car is controllable on bends.

:01:22. > :01:24.A 22`year`old man from Reading has appeared in court charged with the

:01:25. > :01:29.murder of teenager Jayden Parkinson, who disappeared almost two weeks

:01:30. > :01:37.ago. Ben Blakely appeared before magistrates this morning. Thames

:01:38. > :01:41.Valley Police have been using specialist search teams to try to

:01:42. > :01:44.find Jayden, who was last seen getting on a train at Oxford railway

:01:45. > :01:47.station on December the third. The search is concentrating on a South

:01:48. > :01:54.Oxfordshire village. Emma Vardy reports.

:01:55. > :01:58.Officers say that the search continues here are tirelessly. This

:01:59. > :02:01.is a very small village that has seen a lot of police activity over

:02:02. > :02:10.the past few days, but despite that huge effort, Dell there has now been

:02:11. > :02:16.`` there has been no body found. Two men appeared today in court. Ben

:02:17. > :02:20.Blakely was Jayden's by friend and was charged with her murder and with

:02:21. > :02:32.perverting the course of justice. Officers believe he expose `` he

:02:33. > :02:35.disposed from the body, and are 22`year`old man from Didcot is also

:02:36. > :02:42.charged with perverting the course of justice. At the moment, without a

:02:43. > :02:47.body, the police's hunt continues. During the weekend, the grim search

:02:48. > :02:52.of any trees for Jayden Parkinson saw police, in the countryside, and

:02:53. > :02:59.officers have also been searching a string of addresses known to Jayden.

:03:00. > :03:02.Living here say that as a small community and the sort of place

:03:03. > :03:08.where everyone knows each other, and they are events of the last couple

:03:09. > :03:15.of days has come as a shock. Everyone is so stunned. It is just

:03:16. > :03:23.so not here. She was a lovely girl. She was very former on and a good

:03:24. > :03:30.worker in the shop. She was a very nice person, to be honest. Everyone

:03:31. > :03:35.is just really deeply upset. It's not a good thing. Jayden was

:03:36. > :03:41.reported missing on the 3rd of December but the investigation took

:03:42. > :03:51.on new significance last Friday when her boyfriend was addressed on ``

:03:52. > :03:54.was arrested. A 17`year`old waiter came forward voluntarily. Jayden's

:03:55. > :04:03.school released a statement and said: Police have been inundated

:04:04. > :04:09.with offers of help to search, but have urged the public not to get

:04:10. > :04:17.involved, as that could hamper the investigation by destroying

:04:18. > :04:21.evidence. If dead, her `` instead, a campaign on Facebook has been

:04:22. > :04:27.launched. With each hour that passes, any hope of finding Jayden a

:04:28. > :04:31.lively speeding. The police say they have had a great deal of information

:04:32. > :04:36.from the public which has helped them focus their efforts on key

:04:37. > :04:46.addresses and key areas, but tonight, they have renewed their

:04:47. > :04:50.effort De mac call `` renewed their call to the public not to interfere

:04:51. > :04:57.with the investigation. The man charged with her murder will

:04:58. > :05:00.be appear in court tomorrow. A 25`year`old man from Bournemouth

:05:01. > :05:04.has appeared in court charged with the murder of a teenager in the

:05:05. > :05:10.town. The body of 16`year`old Linda Lietaviete was found just after

:05:11. > :05:12.midnight on Friday. Alvin Jay Santos of Wimborne Road appeared at

:05:13. > :05:15.Bournemouth Magistrates' Court this morning. He's been remanded in

:05:16. > :05:18.custody and is to appear at Winchester Crown Court on Wednesday.

:05:19. > :05:21.The company operating the coach which crashed near the Hindhead

:05:22. > :05:24.Tunnel last year killing three people has lost its licence today.

:05:25. > :05:27.MerseyPride Travel was prosecuted back in August, after a court heard

:05:28. > :05:31.that the tyre which blew out and caused the crash was 19 years`old `

:05:32. > :05:34.older than the coach itself. Today it emerged the company had lost its

:05:35. > :05:38.license ten years ago because of safety concerns. Elaine Dunkley

:05:39. > :05:42.reports. This is the journey home from a

:05:43. > :05:48.music festival which ended in tragedy. The driver and passengers

:05:49. > :06:01.didn't make it back to Merseyside after a crash caused by the blow out

:06:02. > :06:05.of an 19`year`old tyre. The family tower today that the company had a

:06:06. > :06:12.questionable record. In 2003, they had heard them `` their licence

:06:13. > :06:18.revoked after unsatisfactory maintenance. It made two notices

:06:19. > :06:26.being issued in 71% of inspections for an adequate maintenance. Today,

:06:27. > :06:33.their licence was revoked. That company as an individual company

:06:34. > :06:39.doesn't fulfil its requirements. I would like to see them and any other

:06:40. > :06:43.unscrupulous firm be taken off the road and stop putting people 's

:06:44. > :06:49.lives at risk. The company did not attend the hearing. In August, they

:06:50. > :06:54.were fined ?4000. The tyre which caused the crash was old but not

:06:55. > :07:01.illegal. To lose your child is life changing, but now it was because of

:07:02. > :07:07.attire, just for the sake of Offaly all that was 20 years old, and that

:07:08. > :07:09.was legal, is excruciating. It's just outrageous that that is allowed

:07:10. > :07:17.to go on after three deaths only recently. That we still have laws

:07:18. > :07:22.that although tires of any age to transport hundreds of thousands of

:07:23. > :07:28.people a year. The family say they will continue to fight for a change

:07:29. > :07:31.in the law. It's been confirmed that as many as

:07:32. > :07:34.50 Ministry of Defence Police officers are under investigation.

:07:35. > :07:37.It's as a result of allegations that they failed to complete routine

:07:38. > :07:39.patrols at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Burghfield, one of

:07:40. > :07:41.Berkshire's two nuclear weapons factories. Seven officers have

:07:42. > :07:46.resigned without facing disciplinary charges. The MoD says there's been

:07:47. > :07:49.no threat to the security of any nuclear assets. Nikki Mitchell has

:07:50. > :07:54.been following the story ` she's in our Caversham studio tonight. Nikki,

:07:55. > :07:57.what's been happening here? The Ministry of Defence has told us

:07:58. > :08:00.the allegations concerning possible security lapses relate to only a

:08:01. > :08:09.small percentage of the overall patrolling required at AWE

:08:10. > :08:12.Burghfield. But, any failure, however small, is taken very

:08:13. > :08:16.seriously and disciplinary action was started immediately. We know

:08:17. > :08:20.seven officers have resigned, so they won't be facing disciplinary

:08:21. > :08:24.charges. And we know that at least some of the other 40 or so officers

:08:25. > :08:34.have been removed from the site and assigned to other duties for now.

:08:35. > :08:37.What are we talking about in terms of security lapses? What is meant by

:08:38. > :08:40.that. The MoD insists this is nothing to do with the physical

:08:41. > :08:44.patrols of the perimeter of this site ` that's it's to do with what

:08:45. > :08:48.they call "internal patrols" ` things like "checking paperwork" and

:08:49. > :08:55.checking "staff protocols". What we need to know is that if there are 50

:08:56. > :09:01.people involved, is that an entire shift, or a group of officers

:09:02. > :09:06.involved in a certain thing who have been forgetting to do something? AWE

:09:07. > :09:08.Burghfield is where the warheads on the Uk's nuclear missiles are

:09:09. > :09:22.assembled and serviced and decommissioned. Is this a systematic

:09:23. > :09:26.flaw or a one`off? Has no one been checking the checkers? Now one

:09:27. > :09:29.parish councillor who serves on the local liaison committee ` the eyes

:09:30. > :09:33.of ears of the community was shocked when he heard about this and the

:09:34. > :09:36.fact the MoD has known about this since September but it's only just

:09:37. > :09:38.emerged. I was very disappointed that this has happened and the

:09:39. > :09:44.number of people involved, and I am also concerned that this extends to

:09:45. > :09:49.external security. We had a meeting last Wednesday where I thought it

:09:50. > :09:54.would be incumbent on AWE Burghfield to inform us about these, so that

:09:55. > :10:00.any questions could be answers. It was known prior to that meeting, but

:10:01. > :10:03.they did not tell us. The investigation is an internal one,

:10:04. > :10:07.but anti`nuclear campaigners are pressing for the findings to be made

:10:08. > :10:13.public. The buck stops with the MoD ` it's judge and jury in this

:10:14. > :10:16.matter. Gatwick Airport says it's unlikely

:10:17. > :10:20.to build a second runway if Heathrow is allowed to expand. The Davies

:10:21. > :10:23.Commission is due to reveal the potential sites to meet more airport

:10:24. > :10:26.capacity in the South East tomorrow. But new figures show a 4% rise in

:10:27. > :10:33.Gatwick passengers on last year, which they say strengthens their bid

:10:34. > :10:40.for another runway. At the moment, we have a lot of spare capacity, and

:10:41. > :10:44.Gatwick is only 70% used. The argument has to be better

:10:45. > :10:53.connectivity on the grounds of the people can act access the report and

:10:54. > :10:56.then allow the market to decide. Figures released today by the Green

:10:57. > :10:59.Party show the number of people using food banks is continuing to

:11:00. > :11:02.increase. The Greens say it's because wages and benefits are not

:11:03. > :11:06.keeping pace with rising living costs. The number of food banks in

:11:07. > :11:09.the South has also increased. The government says it's taken a series

:11:10. > :11:11.of measures to help poorer families. Steve Humphrey reports.

:11:12. > :11:13.A special Christmas lunch for hard`pressed families in Portsmouth

:11:14. > :11:18.attracted many people at the weekend. It was organised by local

:11:19. > :11:24.firms at the business park and was aimed at helping those struggling to

:11:25. > :11:29.make ends meet. Just general day`to`day living is getting

:11:30. > :11:33.absolutely ridiculous. Everything is going up, food is now going up. It

:11:34. > :11:40.is harder and harder every day to live. Some of the families here say

:11:41. > :11:52.they have also used by the `` food banks in the past. You can't do it

:11:53. > :11:53.on what you get on benefits, you really can't. If it wasn't for the

:11:54. > :12:01.food bank, really can't. If it wasn't for the

:12:02. > :12:05.get through. The Green party release figures today that said the number

:12:06. > :12:10.of people using food banks in the south`east has increased by just

:12:11. > :12:15.over 60%. There has also been a rise in the number of individual food

:12:16. > :12:20.banks. The trust that runs 400 food banks across the UK says issues with

:12:21. > :12:24.benefits along with low income with the main reason people needed help.

:12:25. > :12:30.It says in the year to April, just over 4% of those seeking help for

:12:31. > :12:34.unemployed. It will have wages that are not sufficient for them to live

:12:35. > :12:37.on. It is happening because benefits are not sufficient for people to

:12:38. > :12:41.live on, and is also because the blood being sanctioned from benefits

:12:42. > :12:48.and being left front with nowhere to go. The government said it is

:12:49. > :12:49.helping families by freezing council tax and fuel duty. A spokesman

:12:50. > :13:02.said: the government also says its welfare

:13:03. > :13:11.reforms will improve the lives of some of the previous families in the

:13:12. > :13:14.country. Still to come in this evening's

:13:15. > :13:17.South Today: Was this our favourite Christmas present? We hear the story

:13:18. > :13:27.of the man who invented Scalextric in Hampshire.

:13:28. > :13:30.In August last year, Evey Staley, a 10`year`old from Newport on the Isle

:13:31. > :13:34.of Wight, was killed when a car driven by a drink and drug driver

:13:35. > :13:37.hit her parents' car as they left home. This Christmas, Hampshire

:13:38. > :13:39.Police have used her story as the basis for their drink`drive

:13:40. > :13:42.campaign. And because purple was Evey's favourite colour, they've

:13:43. > :13:45.used a purple ribbon to remember all drink`drive victims. It's prompted a

:13:46. > :13:54.heart`warming response from the public. Laura Trant has been to meet

:13:55. > :14:00.Evey's family. I can honestly say we probably still

:14:01. > :14:04.cry every single day. It's very difficult at Christmas because it is

:14:05. > :14:10.a family time. It is when you spend time with your family, so... It is

:14:11. > :14:15.hard. Through a terrible tragedy, positives have emerged. We want

:14:16. > :14:21.people to see her face and remember her and remember how she died and

:14:22. > :14:26.why she died. Why one person's selfish actions led to her death.

:14:27. > :14:31.Evey Staley's memory is being kept alive and she carries a message: Do

:14:32. > :14:35.not drink and drive. She was in the car with her parents as they were

:14:36. > :14:42.pulling out of their drive in Newport. She took the full impact of

:14:43. > :14:45.the speeding car driven by a man on drink on drugs. Purple was her

:14:46. > :14:52.favourite colour, so her grandmother is making these to raise awareness

:14:53. > :14:56.and money for the air ambulance who flew her to hospital. To see her

:14:57. > :15:04.little face smiling in so many places, to see people wearing these

:15:05. > :15:12.is just... It comforts you. But demand is outstripping and the

:15:13. > :15:18.supply. The ribbons are selling out. The message is also travelling.

:15:19. > :15:24.Certainly at the moment, we're looking at 30% up on the amount of

:15:25. > :15:32.people who have been caught drink`driving. What does that mean?

:15:33. > :15:38.Is that there are more police on the patrols, or is it more people being

:15:39. > :15:46.caught drink`driving? We think it is that people are reporting more,

:15:47. > :15:50.which is an absolute success. Evey has already saved lives. Her

:15:51. > :16:01.organs were donated. It is hoped the campaign was helped to save me more.

:16:02. > :16:09.`` many more. We're going to move on to sport, and

:16:10. > :16:29.we're going to start with the Young Sports Personality Of The Year

:16:30. > :16:32.award. Berkshire shooter Amber Hill capped

:16:33. > :16:35.a brilliant 12 months by winning the BBC's Young Sports Personality of

:16:36. > :16:39.the Year award last night. Hill became the youngest competitor ever

:16:40. > :16:42.to win a world cup event in the skeet class earlier this year. Now

:16:43. > :16:46.aged 16, she's the number one ranked shooter in the UK and is number five

:16:47. > :16:49.in the world. Meanwhile, Berkshire`based jockey Tony McCoy,

:16:50. > :16:52.who rode his 4000th winner this year finished third in the viewers' vote

:16:53. > :16:55.for the Sports Personality prize, which was won by Andy Murray.

:16:56. > :16:58.Southampton and Newcastle could face FA disciplinary action after a mass

:16:59. > :17:01.brawl on the sidelines in their game on Saturday. Up to 31 players,

:17:02. > :17:04.coaching staff and stewards became involved after a scuffle which led

:17:05. > :17:07.to both sides' goalkeeping coaches being sent from the dugout. On the

:17:08. > :17:10.field, Southampton had trailed to Yoan Gouffran's goal. A fine

:17:11. > :17:13.breakaway which culminated in Jay Rodriguez's finish earned Saints a

:17:14. > :17:27.point. They face now managerless Tottenham on Sunday. TRANSLATION: We

:17:28. > :17:32.have been able to get in front on these matches, and then we drew and

:17:33. > :17:37.played very well against Manchester City at home. Today, this was a very

:17:38. > :17:40.tough pitch, so I'm happy with the positive result we got.

:17:41. > :17:47.Some big wins in the football league this weekend, here's the pick of the

:17:48. > :17:50.action. Reading bounced back from their

:17:51. > :17:56.first home defeat of the season without good away result. Lee Sharpe

:17:57. > :18:03.had the only goal. It was his second in three games. Not much got past

:18:04. > :18:10.Alex McCarthy on the day. He had a good game. We had one great goal,

:18:11. > :18:14.and we could have scored several more, in the end we utilise the

:18:15. > :18:21.squad well. It was a difficult venue, pleasing result. It's

:18:22. > :18:25.difficult to know what it reads into Bournemouth's first win of the

:18:26. > :18:34.season. Birmingham more or less sealed this game early on. The first

:18:35. > :18:38.goal came after only three minutes. The second came after only half an

:18:39. > :18:45.hour. The slide was less impressive than the prior one. Portsmouth were

:18:46. > :18:55.hoping for an impact with their new manager in charge. But the new boss

:18:56. > :19:02.got a losing start after this. Pompey keeper said the team had no

:19:03. > :19:06.fight. Dorset's Aaron Cook had to settle

:19:07. > :19:09.for Bronze at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester. The

:19:10. > :19:13.fighter who was born and grew up in Dorchester but now fights for the

:19:14. > :19:16.Isle of Man told BBC Sport he was "gutted" with the result. The final

:19:17. > :19:18.was won by the British Olympic bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad,

:19:19. > :19:22.who was controversially selected ahead of Cook for last year's London

:19:23. > :19:25.Games. I train in my back garden and try my best with some of the best in

:19:26. > :19:36.the world, and I just came up short, so I am gutted. I am not happy with

:19:37. > :19:41.prawns, no. Next time, though. He was beaten, but he was third. A good

:19:42. > :19:51.comeback given the difficult seven months he's had.

:19:52. > :20:00.It's a toy that's stood the test of time, appearing on Christmas wish

:20:01. > :20:05.lists since 1957. I never actually had one, you know!

:20:06. > :20:09.I always wanted one! The car racing game Scalextric is now made by the

:20:10. > :20:13.toy giant Hornby and is still a bestseller around the world. But

:20:14. > :20:17.Scalextric started in Hampshire ` the brainchild of an inventor called

:20:18. > :20:19.Fred Francis. David Allard has the story of the man who called himself

:20:20. > :20:23.The Toymaker. 60 years ago, Fred Francis put a

:20:24. > :20:28.spade in ground for his new factory near Havant ` and the world learnt a

:20:29. > :20:35.new word. I can beat my friends, but you can't beat Scalextric. Fred

:20:36. > :20:37.Francis was an inventor and entrepreneur. During the 1940s, he

:20:38. > :20:40.ran an engineering business, thriving on Government contracts.

:20:41. > :20:47.But as his wife Diana reveals, he had an early ambition. He always

:20:48. > :20:55.knew from the age of 14 that he wanted to be a toymaker. The very

:20:56. > :20:58.day that he was 14, he walked out of school and he didn't go back. First,

:20:59. > :21:02.Fred made clockwork scale models, and called them Scalex. They were

:21:03. > :21:06.popular toys ` but by 1956, sales had dropped. So to make the cars

:21:07. > :21:17.more fun to play with, Fred gave them an electric motor ` and Scalex

:21:18. > :21:22.became Scalextric. Everything was manufactured in that factory, wasn't

:21:23. > :21:26.it? Yes, that is where Scalextric was born. Fred was a stickler for

:21:27. > :21:34.detail ` but this toymaker knew above all, Scalextric had to be fun.

:21:35. > :21:44.This is the first of the Scalextric range. We wanted the car to get out

:21:45. > :21:48.of control on bends, so we made it so that that happened. Fred died in

:21:49. > :21:50.1998. Diana has the only copy of his unpublished memoirs in which he

:21:51. > :21:59.reveals he wasn't entirely sure about the name Scalextric. I will

:22:00. > :22:03.admit that I did have misgivings. It was difficult to pronounce and was

:22:04. > :22:06.not synonymous with motor racing. In the event, it has been accepted
