:00:00. > :00:11.industry. We are

:00:12. > :00:20.Good evening. Friends of a cancer patient who died on Boxing Day say

:00:21. > :00:23.he may have survived if an ambulance had arrived sooner. Ben Horne who

:00:24. > :00:26.lived in Surrey collapsed in Portsmouth. Two friends who found

:00:27. > :00:29.him called an ambulance and gave him first aid. But he died before

:00:30. > :00:34.paramedics turned up ` 22 minutes after they'd first called 999. Rob

:00:35. > :00:37.Powell reports. Ben Horne came to Portsmouth on Christmas Eve. He was

:00:38. > :00:40.being treated for colon cancer and wanted to spend Christmas with

:00:41. > :00:47.friends. Friends who on Boxing Day found him collapsed in his hotel

:00:48. > :00:53.room ` and called 999. After 20 minutes, his breathing stopped and I

:00:54. > :00:57.shouted to Richard to find out where the ambulance was. Richard called

:00:58. > :01:00.again and a paramedic arrived. But Ben had already died. South Central

:01:01. > :01:04.Ambulance Service says the call was initially categorised as amber ` as

:01:05. > :01:10.Ben was still breathing. It was only upgraded to red after the second

:01:11. > :01:14.call. The service says an ambulance arrived one minute after the second

:01:15. > :01:24.call and 22 minutes after the first. They added that Boxing Day was very

:01:25. > :01:40.easy and re`sources were given when they could. He could have been here

:01:41. > :01:46.sooner. I am upset, annoyed, angry. They should have been with him at

:01:47. > :01:58.that time. It is not a case of we might or might not have saved him,

:01:59. > :02:01.he was left. That is not fair. Five people have been arrested by police

:02:02. > :02:04.investigating the death of Joromie Lewis ` who died after drinking

:02:05. > :02:07.juice contaminated with cocaine. Joromie Lewis, who was 33, worked

:02:08. > :02:11.for an import company in Southampton. He took a sip from a

:02:12. > :02:14.bottle that was part of a consignment from the Caribbean. He

:02:15. > :02:23.became immediately ill and died soon after. Many of our big retail

:02:24. > :02:26.centres are reporting healthy business before and after Christmas

:02:27. > :02:29.with more people shopping than in the past two years. It seems the

:02:30. > :02:33.sales have been a big draw including at The Oracle in Reading where Joe

:02:34. > :02:37.Campbell reports for us. Outside the weather may have been grim but after

:02:38. > :02:40.a buffeting by the economic storm retailers here finally seem to be

:02:41. > :02:44.facing a better outlook. You bought as soon as you walked through the

:02:45. > :02:49.door, did you not? Yes. My Pandora charm. We thought we might as well

:02:50. > :03:00.get in there now, there are still bargains. Visitor numbers were up 2%

:03:01. > :03:04.on Friday compared to last year. Bournemouth's Castle Point, saw a 3%

:03:05. > :03:10.rise in footfall year on year for the start of its sales. Today has

:03:11. > :03:16.been fantastically busy. We had a record day for the year with over

:03:17. > :03:21.95,000 people. But a chill wind whistles through the more exposed

:03:22. > :03:25.parts of the retail sector. The big problem in the High Street is how

:03:26. > :03:32.many have been out to browse and then go home to buy. You do not even

:03:33. > :03:36.need to go home these days, with the increasing use of mobile phones like

:03:37. > :03:41.these. You can buy it there and then, but not from these stores. The

:03:42. > :03:45.internet casualties are there to see. But here too there's a new

:03:46. > :03:48.found optimism like this business opening up in a shop that's stood

:03:49. > :03:55.empty for two years. I think times are getting better now from what

:03:56. > :04:00.they were before. Especially in Reading, it did go quiet a few years

:04:01. > :04:07.ago, but there is a lot of development going on here. And such

:04:08. > :04:13.start`ups will be sweet news to those planning a route back to

:04:14. > :04:17.better times. A new system trialled on trains in Sussex could save rail

:04:18. > :04:20.companies money. Like combining a sat nav with an economy setting on a

:04:21. > :04:24.family car, the gadget advises drivers how much power to use to

:04:25. > :04:26.arrive on time more efficiently. As our Transport Correspondent Paul

:04:27. > :04:30.Clifton reports, it could also be used as a spy in the cab. Leaving

:04:31. > :04:39.London Bridge, heading south. Steve Bull is testing a new piece of kit.

:04:40. > :04:45.In the corner of the cab is the advisory system which tells how he

:04:46. > :04:54.should drive to reach the next station on time. It is a bit like a

:04:55. > :05:00.spy in the cab. It means the train company can compare drivers and see

:05:01. > :05:05.who drives most efficiently. The system is built in Germany with

:05:06. > :05:09.software from hungry and run by a company from Wiltshire. If you are

:05:10. > :05:16.looking at a train that would normally be on time, you can save in

:05:17. > :05:21.excess of 10% on fuel savings, and then you have to think about the

:05:22. > :05:27.carbon savings. First Great Western already has a similar system.

:05:28. > :05:37.Heading from Reading into London Paddington, this train is very late

:05:38. > :05:40.so the equipment is not working. It advises drivers about times for

:05:41. > :05:47.their journeys, that is what it comes down to. It saves costs on

:05:48. > :05:52.fuel and wear and tear on the train, and ensures we have the right

:05:53. > :05:56.passengers. On the way away here, it is still a new idea. If the

:05:57. > :06:02.projected energy saving is correct, it will pay for itself in two years.

:06:03. > :06:05.It was a full weekend for the south's football teams ` but not a

:06:06. > :06:08.particularly impressive bunch of results. Roger Finn has the round`up

:06:09. > :06:14.from the Premiership and the Championship. In the Premier League,

:06:15. > :06:19.Southampton went to Everton and fell behind after just nine minutes when

:06:20. > :06:25.Seamus Coleman fired a goal home. Late in the second half, Saints

:06:26. > :06:28.brought on as substitute and within a few minutes he produced a

:06:29. > :06:34.long`range shots which completely fooled the Everton keeper. But just

:06:35. > :06:44.three minutes later, Everton were back in front. The final score:

:06:45. > :06:50.Everton to, Southampton one. The manager believes things are going

:06:51. > :06:55.well. TRANSLATION: Yes, we are very happy with the progress the team

:06:56. > :06:57.have made. The way the team have changed since I took over, we have

:06:58. > :07:05.been here a year, they have progressed as we wanted them to.

:07:06. > :07:11.Reading lost their third consecutive game when they were beaten 3`0 at

:07:12. > :07:17.Middlesbrough. Nigel Adkins described the team's performance as

:07:18. > :07:26.not acceptable. Bournemouth earned a point at home to Ipswich. A goal was

:07:27. > :07:33.scored 16 minutes to time with the final result in 1`1. Let's see

:07:34. > :07:38.there's any respite from the wet and windy weather. Yes, I bit by breeder

:07:39. > :07:42.before the next spell of wet and windy weather arrives with us. This

:07:43. > :07:47.evening will be largely dry and we will have clear spells overhead. As

:07:48. > :07:52.the night goes on, the cloud will build and we may see some showers on

:07:53. > :07:55.the south coast. We will see some patchy outbreaks of rain tomorrow

:07:56. > :08:01.morning and temperatures will be four or five degrees. The band of

:08:02. > :08:04.rain will arrive tomorrow morning and whizzes through but it will

:08:05. > :08:12.bring some heavy downpours and strong, gusty winds. One or two

:08:13. > :08:18.showers possible but some good sunny spells and highs of ten or 11

:08:19. > :08:20.degrees. For your New Year's Eve celebrations, not looking too bad. A

:08:21. > :08:27.handful of showers but blustery conditions. Thank you very much,

:08:28. > :08:39.that is all from us, we are back later on. Goodbye.

:08:40. > :08:45.Another day off strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. At least things

:08:46. > :08:50.are quiet at the moment. The rain has cleared off and the wind is

:08:51. > :08:56.lighter. There might be some ice in Scotland, but through the night, the

:08:57. > :09:01.wind picks up, lifting temperatures, but more heavy rain pushing in. The

:09:02. > :09:06.rain band is not quite a significant us today, but it will leave surface

:09:07. > :09:12.water flooding. Some heavy bursts clearing Northern Ireland by first

:09:13. > :09:17.light. It reaches the east coast by the time we get to lunchtime, after

:09:18. > :09:22.a few morning showers. The wind is falling lighter, easing down from

:09:23. > :09:27.the gusty nature. A bit of sunshine through the afternoon. The

:09:28. > :09:28.temperature is a bit higher than they should be at this stage of the
