:00:11. > :00:15.Good evening. I'm Laura Trant with the news in the south.
:00:16. > :00:19.One of Portsmouth's Liberal Democrat councillors has resigned her cabinet
:00:20. > :00:23.post in protest over how the party has handled the suspension of MP
:00:24. > :00:26.Mike Hancock. On Friday, the city's Liberal Democrats decided he should
:00:27. > :00:29.be allowed to stay in his Cabinet post, although he has been suspended
:00:30. > :00:35.from the party amid claims of sexual misconduct. Councillor Eleanor Scott
:00:36. > :00:45.disagreed with that decision. Mike Hancock denies all the allegations.
:00:46. > :00:50.Residents have described experiencing a mini tornado in parts
:00:51. > :00:53.of the South yesterday afternoon. Trees were torn down, including this
:00:54. > :00:57.one in West Sussex, which fell onto a house. Thousands of people were
:00:58. > :00:58.without electricity in Sussex and Surrey, although most are now
:00:59. > :01:01.reconnected. Meanwhile, residents are pressing
:01:02. > :01:04.the Prime Minister to make flood defences an urgent priority in the
:01:05. > :01:08.Hampshire village of Hambledon. The area has been very badly affected by
:01:09. > :01:15.this year's floods, with weeks of disruption and road closures.
:01:16. > :01:19.It was at the top of the skirting. Ian was a GP in Hambledon for many
:01:20. > :01:23.years but this is a situation he can't remedy. Southern Water and
:01:24. > :01:31.Hampshire County Council know that it floods and nothing really has
:01:32. > :01:35.been done. I visited the village on Monday, when water levels were
:01:36. > :01:39.worryingly high. Flood cellars were at bursting point and roads had
:01:40. > :01:42.turned into rivers. Almost a week on, not much has changed. Temporary
:01:43. > :01:44.measures, like 15,000 sandbags and an additional sewage pipe are
:01:45. > :01:50.helping, but it is permanent solutions the community wants to
:01:51. > :01:54.see. Shaun Woodward, from Hampshire County Council, has taken the issue
:01:55. > :01:59.up with the Prime Minister. I have put it to the Prime Minister, when I
:02:00. > :02:02.met him a couple of weeks go, saying we have got these problems, do you
:02:03. > :02:07.know where Hambledon is? Yes, he did, he is a cricket fan, so he had
:02:08. > :02:09.certainly heard of Hambledon. I am hoping the Environment Agency will
:02:10. > :02:13.agree that, yes, Hambledon is the top priority in Hampshire and we
:02:14. > :02:17.should get the money from the Environment Agency to do this
:02:18. > :02:23.desperately needed work. How much money are we talking here? Around
:02:24. > :02:27.?3.5 million. The ground water isn't going anywhere just yet. There is a
:02:28. > :02:32.ten`day delay between it raining and the water surfacing. It will be
:02:33. > :02:36.weeks before this village returns to normal.
:02:37. > :02:39.All this rain is causing problems for wildlife and, ironically, that
:02:40. > :02:43.includes some creatures who usually love the wet. The Arundel Wetland
:02:44. > :02:48.Centre in West Sussex has had to move some of its wildfowl away to
:02:49. > :02:52.Gloucestershire. Roger Finn reports. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at
:02:53. > :02:57.Arundel was fully open today, but it has been partially closed for most
:02:58. > :03:00.of January. The centre is a refuge for wildfowl and home to a
:03:01. > :03:04.collection of 250 rare and threatened birds. This winter, it
:03:05. > :03:10.has experienced the worst flooding in its history. Many pathways were
:03:11. > :03:14.underwater. And some of the hides were swamped. You would think this
:03:15. > :03:18.would make a paradise for wetland birds, but it is not necessarily so.
:03:19. > :03:25.Initially, the flooding causes a huge boom of food. Seeds and insects
:03:26. > :03:28.get wafted out of the ground but then, very quickly, that food supply
:03:29. > :03:35.disappears and anything they usually would reach is under too much water.
:03:36. > :03:38.Your diving ducks, they are fine, they can dive, but your dabblling
:03:39. > :03:43.ducks, they need to find somewhere not as flooded. There have also been
:03:44. > :03:47.problems for the captive birds. 60 rare geese and swans had to be moved
:03:48. > :03:51.to the Trust Centre at Slimbridge, because their enclosure was almost
:03:52. > :03:54.entirely underwater. Elsewhere, palettes have been put into
:03:55. > :03:59.enclosures to give the birds somewhere to perch. One is also
:04:00. > :04:02.being put under this black necked swans' nest, so that rising water
:04:03. > :04:08.doesn't swamp the four eggs laid here. And it is not just the
:04:09. > :04:11.birdlife that is causing concern. Some of the things we have seen,
:04:12. > :04:15.really desperate to get some high ground, are things like moles, we
:04:16. > :04:19.have seen swimming. Things like our water voles ` their winter store
:04:20. > :04:23.food will have been flooded out, so again, they are quite desperate to
:04:24. > :04:27.feed. Though the water levels have now fallen, the floods may soon be
:04:28. > :04:41.back here as there is even more rain forecast and high tides due at the
:04:42. > :04:44.end of the week. Some football news and Southampton
:04:45. > :04:48.have drawn Sunderland in the FA Cup fifth round draw, following their
:04:49. > :04:57.comfortable win over Yeovilton yesterday. And Brighton have drawn
:04:58. > :05:00.Hull City. That have a look at the weather now,
:05:01. > :05:04.with Emily. Good evening. After the wet weather
:05:05. > :05:08.today, some colder weather to look out for tonight. As temperatures
:05:09. > :05:11.drop away, the risk of some ice on the roads through tonight and into
:05:12. > :05:15.tomorrow morning. We have some wintry showers with us as well.
:05:16. > :05:19.Through the evening and overnight, the showers are a mix of rain and
:05:20. > :05:22.sleet but also some snow, particularly for the hills but even
:05:23. > :05:26.to lower levels at times. As it showers, it could be quite localised
:05:27. > :05:28.where we see snowfall accumulating but temperatures are generally
:05:29. > :05:31.getting down close to freezing, so anywhere can see some icy stretches
:05:32. > :05:35.for tomorrow morning. So a few wintry showers with this at first
:05:36. > :05:38.tomorrow as well. As we move into the afternoon and temperatures lift,
:05:39. > :05:41.we're looking at a generally more rain showers but still a few heavier
:05:42. > :05:44.showers are possible. Windy through tomorrow and temperatures up to nine
:05:45. > :05:47.degrees. It remains unsettled with further rain to watch out for on
:05:48. > :05:49.Tuesday. After that, drier but colder.
:05:50. > :05:56.But snow for some. That's all from us for now. We are
:05:57. > :05:58.back at 10:15pm, in the meantime, plenty of updates on the BBC website
:05:59. > :06:02.and local radio. Goodbye for now. Until then, plenty more news on our
:06:03. > :06:11.website. Bye-bye. Good evening.
:06:12. > :06:12.will keep going through the nights tonight and as the air turns
:06:13. > :06:17.colder, tonight and as the air turns
:06:18. > :06:21.wintry. A mixture of sleet and snow leaving us with the risk advice The
:06:22. > :06:25.band of rain has cleared his leaving us with the risk advice The
:06:26. > :06:31.cloud on the satellite picture, the centre of the low. Around that,
:06:32. > :06:37.strong winds at cross -- strong winds across the Western Isles.
:06:38. > :06:38.strong winds at cross -- strong possibility of sleet and snow at
:06:39. > :06:42.lower levels into the morning. As temperatures fall close to freezing,
:06:43. > :06:46.it is the ice that is our main concern for Monday morning.
:06:47. > :06:46.it is the ice that is our main of showers still with us on Monday.
:06:47. > :06:53.It will be another windy day, with of showers still with us on Monday.
:06:54. > :06:56.lines of showers to the south, turning back to sleet and rain
:06:57. > :06:56.lines of showers to the south, the afternoon. More frequent showers
:06:57. > :07:01.further north. Mainly wintry across the afternoon. More frequent showers
:07:02. > :07:05.the high ground, particularly parts of the Highlands and Grampians.
:07:06. > :07:06.Temperatures tomorrow afternoon at around 80
