:00:00. > :00:00.rise. That is all from
:00:00. > :00:09.Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:
:00:10. > :00:18.Flooding and high tides ` the South bears the brunt as more wild weather
:00:19. > :00:22.batters the coast. It has the power of nature. You
:00:23. > :00:25.can't vote against it, you've just got to hope for the best.
:00:26. > :00:28.Weighing in ` new figures reveal that Gosport is one of the fattest
:00:29. > :00:33.towns in the country. McDonald's, Burger King.
:00:34. > :00:35.You can't see it working down the high street, most people are pretty
:00:36. > :00:38.normal. By royal appointment ` Queen
:00:39. > :00:41.guitarist Brian May funds an alternative to the badger cull.
:00:42. > :00:44.And remembered 70 years on ` the Portsmouth warship nicknamed HMS
:00:45. > :00:53.Pepperpot because she was hit so many times.
:00:54. > :00:56.Everywhere we went, the German aircraft followed us around. It was
:00:57. > :01:05.the most bombed ship in World War II.
:01:06. > :01:09.There's been more wild weather today with disruption for travellers,
:01:10. > :01:12.concern for people living by the coast and swollen rivers and
:01:13. > :01:18.structural damage to two well known piers. The worst of it has been
:01:19. > :01:21.around Weymouth where two severe flood warnings are in force but many
:01:22. > :01:28.other areas have had strong winds and stormy seas. Briony Leyland
:01:29. > :01:35.reports. Another pounding for Portland. Last
:01:36. > :01:40.month, flood sirens sounded here for the first time in 30 years. Today,
:01:41. > :01:44.residents heard them again, a warning to stay inside their homes
:01:45. > :01:49.as high water approached. In nearby Weymouth, a force ten gale off on
:01:50. > :01:56.the shore. I thought I would check it out
:01:57. > :02:00.because last night was really high. I was seeing how far away from the
:02:01. > :02:05.front door it was getting. Anxious times for supporters of the
:02:06. > :02:14.South Parade here. Bits of the boat deck came loose on the high seas and
:02:15. > :02:20.were strewn across the beach. The chances of `` the need to secure a
:02:21. > :02:26.deal is increasingly urgent. It is the first tragedy in what
:02:27. > :02:31.could be a long line of tragedies. We are just trying to get this into
:02:32. > :02:36.community hands fast so it can't be repaired.
:02:37. > :02:49.In Brighton, this is swallowed a big chunk of this year. `` pier. Rail
:02:50. > :02:58.and ferry services were disrupted. Sluice gates have been disrupted
:02:59. > :03:10.here. The council says flooding may be unavoidable.
:03:11. > :03:14.New Government figures on obesity have revealed that Gosport is one of
:03:15. > :03:17.the fattest places in the country. According to the figures, almost 73%
:03:18. > :03:20.of its residents are overweight or obese. That compares to a national
:03:21. > :03:23.average of around 64%. In neighbouring Portsmouth, the figure
:03:24. > :03:26.is 57%, one of the best`performing areas in the South. Obesity is one
:03:27. > :03:32.of the biggest public health challenges and in Gosport it's
:03:33. > :03:39.getting worse. When it comes to obesity, things are
:03:40. > :03:43.not working out for Gosport. The man who has run this gem in the town for
:03:44. > :03:47.20 years says it is always been a problem.
:03:48. > :03:53.When I was young you did PE every day, you ate proper food. Now there
:03:54. > :04:00.is no hope it is. I get young carrots and today `` young kids and
:04:01. > :04:05.today who don't even know what protein and hyper crowd ``
:04:06. > :04:24.carbohydrates are. The number of children in sport has
:04:25. > :04:30.increased. One thing Gosport has plenty of, it
:04:31. > :04:35.appeals to all ages, takeaway. In the town there is one fast`food
:04:36. > :04:43.outlet for every hundred people and a population of 90,000.
:04:44. > :04:47.There's lots of fast food. I haven't noticed anything like
:04:48. > :04:52.this. I've seen fit people around, I haven't seen fat people.
:04:53. > :04:57.You can't really see it. Most people are pretty normal. I don't see why
:04:58. > :05:02.so many people are in that percentage at all.
:05:03. > :05:12.The council says it is tackling the problem. People are working out at
:05:13. > :05:18.this leisure centre. But the problem will weigh on their mind for some
:05:19. > :05:21.time yet. Last year, councils were given greater responsibility for
:05:22. > :05:24.public health. A short time ago I spoke to Dr Ruth Milton from
:05:25. > :05:29.Hampshire County Council and asked her if she was surprised by
:05:30. > :05:33.Gosport's figures. I'm not surprised at all. We've
:05:34. > :05:39.known there's been an issue with children and Gosport for a while but
:05:40. > :05:46.today emphasises the problem for adults.
:05:47. > :05:51.Is there an issue with money? There is always an issue with money
:05:52. > :06:00.but with the council we are working to really focus and using it to its
:06:01. > :06:05.best effect. One in five children in year six is
:06:06. > :06:13.obese. They are worrying statistics. They
:06:14. > :06:21.are worrying but at the same time childhood obesity rates are not
:06:22. > :06:28.increasing. And the adult rate of increase is slowing down. We're not
:06:29. > :06:31.there yet but we're on the journey. Whatever you're doing already seems
:06:32. > :06:37.not to be working so what more are you going to do?
:06:38. > :06:40.We are working with the schools and with the borough council and other
:06:41. > :06:50.partners to really help people access things that can support their
:06:51. > :06:56.lifestyles from the work we do with children through the Mend
:06:57. > :07:01.programme. This really is about educating
:07:02. > :07:05.people. It is more than just educating
:07:06. > :07:07.people, it is about how they live their lives and working across the
:07:08. > :07:14.partnerships to make sure there is the right environment for them to
:07:15. > :07:18.eat healthily and take exercise and not feel that there is a limitation
:07:19. > :07:25.on what they can do. I'm cute.
:07:26. > :07:29.`` thank you. Police investigating the suspected murder of a man 15
:07:30. > :07:33.years ago have called off a dig in the garden of a former Fareham pub.
:07:34. > :07:36.Kevin Palmer went missing after a night out in 1999. Hampshire Police
:07:37. > :07:43.say they began digging at the disused site yesterday but say
:07:44. > :07:46.nothing was found. Campaigners in Weymouth hoping to
:07:47. > :07:49.have land re`registered as a town green to block development have lost
:07:50. > :07:52.their Supreme Court challenge. The long`running case concerned whether
:07:53. > :07:56.the area known as Markham and Little Francis should be protected after it
:07:57. > :08:00.was bought by a property developer. It is a legal fight over a
:08:01. > :08:06.picturesque space which could turn ugly in the courts. It has been
:08:07. > :08:13.enjoyed by dog walkers for years and was given detective status over a
:08:14. > :08:18.year ago. The people who own the land say that it shouldn't have been
:08:19. > :08:20.registered civil and went to the Supreme Court is to get it taken off
:08:21. > :08:28.the list. To have gotten this far and lost we
:08:29. > :08:34.are all disappointed. This decision could have legal
:08:35. > :08:41.implications for other areas. What this case turns on us can
:08:42. > :08:46.developers come along and left a statutory protection many years
:08:47. > :08:54.later and then build on the land? For developers, the land value could
:08:55. > :08:59.be millions. But for the people who use it is value is simply it.
:09:00. > :09:02.I got there and children who come here and love it.
:09:03. > :09:26.It is pretty match the only green space left in the area.
:09:27. > :09:31.Still to come in this evening's South Today: Nicknamed HMS Pepperpot
:09:32. > :09:41.` the Portsmouth warship hit so many times during the Second World War.
:09:42. > :09:44.Network Rail has laid out its scheme for a new direct rail link between
:09:45. > :09:47.Reading and Heathrow Airport. Subject to planning permission, it
:09:48. > :09:50.aims to start groundwork in two years' time and open in 2021. Our
:09:51. > :09:56.Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton is here. The idea has been around
:09:57. > :09:59.for a while but this sounds much more definite.
:10:00. > :10:03.We knew the Government was putting up half a billion pounds for this.
:10:04. > :10:08.Four trains an hour, running from Reading straight into Heathrow's
:10:09. > :10:12.Terminal Five. Now we know that, if it gets planning approval, the work
:10:13. > :10:15.will begin two years from now. There will be a five kilometre tunnel and
:10:16. > :10:20.digging that will begin in 2018, with the first trains in 2021. There
:10:21. > :10:24.will be a spur off the Great Western Main Line. Let's zoom in and see
:10:25. > :10:27.that it will leave the Main Line east of Slough, straight into the
:10:28. > :10:32.tunnel to get underneath the M4 and then the M25 and into Terminal Five.
:10:33. > :10:36.There is already space for two platforms under the airport. A big
:10:37. > :10:39.empty box was built at the same time as the terminal, it just needs
:10:40. > :10:43.fitting out. This would bring big benefits to the
:10:44. > :10:46.Thames Valley. Local business groups reckon it will
:10:47. > :10:50.create 40,000 jobs in the Thames Valley and bring ?2 billion in
:10:51. > :10:55.economic benefits. It would pay for itself in ten years. At the moment,
:10:56. > :10:59.to get from Reading to Heathrow by public transport you either take a
:11:00. > :11:03.bus or get the train into London and then back out again. This will take
:11:04. > :11:06.half an hour off the journey. So what has happened to plans for a
:11:07. > :11:10.Southern Rail route into Heathrow? Has that gone away?
:11:11. > :11:13.No, it hasn't gone away. But nor has it really moved forward. The scheme
:11:14. > :11:16.is called Airtrack and it seemed certain to happen. But some local
:11:17. > :11:19.councils raised concerns about how much time level crossings would be
:11:20. > :11:29.closed to road traffic. That stifled progress but it could eventually
:11:30. > :11:33.still go ahead. The South Downs were turned into a
:11:34. > :11:37.national park to help keep it as a green open space. But a row has
:11:38. > :11:41.broken out at Rogate in West Sussex over plans for a new golf course.
:11:42. > :11:44.The greens and fairways would be put on heathland. The golf club says
:11:45. > :11:48.walkers and grazing animals will still be able to use the land. Sean
:11:49. > :11:53.Killick reports. It is he planned at the moment, it
:11:54. > :12:01.is also designated as common land which gives people the right to
:12:02. > :12:10.raise livestock here. But it is owned by a golf club who want to put
:12:11. > :12:16.a new course on the land. They say public access would be retained and
:12:17. > :12:20.people could still raise livestock but these people say that they be
:12:21. > :12:24.difficult. We would have to keep the cattle in
:12:25. > :12:30.certain areas and then move them as and when. I don't know how it would
:12:31. > :12:35.work but it would be totally practical.
:12:36. > :12:41.A group campaigning to protect common land rejects the plan.
:12:42. > :12:48.It is going to be very dangerous because we know the speed golf balls
:12:49. > :12:53.travel it. Unless they restrict access where people to currently go
:12:54. > :12:57.where they like, my concern is for people 's safety.
:12:58. > :13:05.The golf club declines to be interviewed but in the statement
:13:06. > :13:10.they said they had no intention of stopping public access, merely to
:13:11. > :13:17.prevent its abuse, such as scrambling, fly`tipping and
:13:18. > :13:26.vandalism. There will be a vote on the plan in the next few months.
:13:27. > :13:30.More than half of Portsmouth's parking wardens will be on strike
:13:31. > :13:33.today. The 24 hour walk out by union members began last night from
:13:34. > :13:36.midnight. The wardens are complaining about pay and poor
:13:37. > :13:39.changing facilities. They also claim they're under increased pressure to
:13:40. > :13:42.issue tickets. The council says it's still talking to the unions but says
:13:43. > :13:48.it does not set targets for parking tickets, as this would be illegal.
:13:49. > :13:59.It badger vaccination programme could be cheaper and more effective
:14:00. > :14:05.than a cull. Brian May is heading the campaign.
:14:06. > :14:09.He'd already set up the badger sett the site in Dorset and today rock
:14:10. > :14:15.star Bryan make to the House of Commons to call the county to be an
:14:16. > :14:20.early pioneering vaccination against TB as an alternative to the cull.
:14:21. > :14:28.If you do for years of vaccinations you would get her immunity which
:14:29. > :14:34.takes them out of the equation. We are concerned about the badgers and
:14:35. > :14:40.the cattle to the government on again about the cattle because they
:14:41. > :14:48.make money. Partly because of monitoring, the
:14:49. > :14:52.costs rose above vaccination. More than 300,000 people have signed
:14:53. > :14:55.a petition calling for a badger vaccination and Brian May believes
:14:56. > :15:03.he can get donors involved in his alternative. The rock band Queen
:15:04. > :15:14.have donated money. Politicians from all three political parties were at
:15:15. > :15:18.the launch. On to sport and we are going to talk
:15:19. > :15:40.about Reading football club. Something happening off the pitch.
:15:41. > :15:43.It's a return to the Reading Way. Sir John Madejski has confirmed what
:15:44. > :15:47.fans have long suspected ` the Royals owner Anton Zingarevich is no
:15:48. > :15:50.longer involved in the day to day running of the club. Board chairman,
:15:51. > :15:54.Sir John, also revealed he's looking to sell not just his minority stake
:15:55. > :15:56.in Reading, but also the Russian's share. Joe Campbell reports.
:15:57. > :16:00.Sir John Madejski tonight is master of all he surveys. But the storms
:16:01. > :16:03.outside his apartment are as nothing compared to the troubled waters the
:16:04. > :16:06.club must navigate. The promised investment from new owner Anton
:16:07. > :16:09.Zingarevich and his family just hasn't lived up to expectations. The
:16:10. > :16:14.time he's putting into the club, well, that's now nonexistent. So Sir
:16:15. > :16:19.John is back in charge. We are going to run the club like it
:16:20. > :16:24.used to be run so that is very comforting for everybody concerned.
:16:25. > :16:29.Running football clubs is not an easy thing as people find out.
:16:30. > :16:35.Does that mean they are saying they want to pull back and you are acting
:16:36. > :16:40.as an agent to sell all 100% of the club?
:16:41. > :16:43.I suppose that's probably right. Sir John has spoken out now to
:16:44. > :16:49.reassure fans worried for the future of what they see as their club.
:16:50. > :17:04.What would you say to those who want a resolution.
:17:05. > :17:07.All I can say is they and me both. Oxford United maintained their
:17:08. > :17:10.unbeaten away record in League Two, with a hard`fought point at Bury.
:17:11. > :17:14.The U's went behind in the second half at Gigg Lane, but a first goal
:17:15. > :17:18.for the club from midfielder Josh Ruffels put United back on level
:17:19. > :17:20.terms. Oxford remain in third in the table, in the final automatic
:17:21. > :17:23.promotion place. And Swindon Town can move closer to
:17:24. > :17:26.a trip to Wembley tonight. They face Peterborough in the first leg of
:17:27. > :17:29.their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Final. There's live
:17:30. > :17:32.coverage on BBC Wiltshire. Kick`off slightly earlier than normal at
:17:33. > :17:35.7:15pm. Local rivals Havant Waterlooville
:17:36. > :17:39.and Gosport Borough will face off for a place at Wembley, in the FA
:17:40. > :17:42.Trophy Final. The clubs' grounds are separated by around eight miles as
:17:43. > :17:45.the crow flies, either side of Portsea Island. Havant
:17:46. > :17:52.Waterlooville booked their place in the last four by upsetting Aldershot
:17:53. > :17:55.Town at Westleigh Park. The Shots had Jordan Roberts sent off before
:17:56. > :17:58.half time, and the Hawks took advantage. Dennis Oli got the first,
:17:59. > :18:02.and when Nic Ciardini made it 4`1, Lee Bradbury's side could start to
:18:03. > :18:10.look forward to the juicy local semi final. Brett Williams' penalty was a
:18:11. > :18:13.consolation. We've spoken a lot about snowboarder
:18:14. > :18:17.Billy Morgan over the last few weeks. Well, tomorrow it gets
:18:18. > :18:20.serious for him because his bid for a Winter Olympic medal gets underway
:18:21. > :18:22.in Sochi. Although the opening ceremony doesn't take place until
:18:23. > :18:25.Friday, Southampton's Morgan takes part in qualifying in the slopestyle
:18:26. > :18:31.event tomorrow morning. You can watch live on the BBC Red Button
:18:32. > :18:35.from 6am UK time. From snow to ice, and two of the
:18:36. > :18:38.South's team face off tonight for a place in the Premier League Cup
:18:39. > :18:41.Final. Basingstoke Bison lead Guildford Flames 8`3 from the first
:18:42. > :18:45.leg of their semi. But Guildford have home advantage at the Spectrum
:18:46. > :18:49.Leisure centre this evening. That's underway at 8pm.
:18:50. > :18:51.Motorsport next, and a Hampshire`based team are revving up
:18:52. > :18:55.for the 2014 World Superbikes Championship, which starts later
:18:56. > :18:58.this month in Australia. Today the Crescent`Suzuki team unveiled their
:18:59. > :19:13.new bike. And confidence is high at their New Forest base.
:19:14. > :19:22.They started out in this humble shop but now there's Superbike team are
:19:23. > :19:37.plotting world domination. Some people come in to have their
:19:38. > :19:45.mortar by serviced. You don't have too the and enthusiasts to enjoy the
:19:46. > :19:49.spectacle. Northern Ireland's Eugene Laverty
:19:50. > :19:55.finished second last year and turned on the top of to join
:19:56. > :20:01.Crescent`Suzuki. I feel I have got unfinished
:20:02. > :20:06.business and want to fight for the championship.
:20:07. > :20:11.Another British star steps up after winning the British superbikes title
:20:12. > :20:15.in 2013. It was a natural progression but it
:20:16. > :20:19.is not always the way it goes. Some people aren't as lucky to have this
:20:20. > :20:23.opportunity so I will make the most of it.
:20:24. > :20:29.We have invested heavily in the Raiders and hopefully they can give
:20:30. > :20:51.us the results they deserve. `` invested in the riders.
:20:52. > :20:57.Hopes are high for a good year. Those bikes have to be sold to the
:20:58. > :21:12.public, that's how you qualify. Moto GP or souped up ones.
:21:13. > :21:14.Fascinating. Now one of the most famous Portsmouth warships of World
:21:15. > :21:17.War II is being remembered this month.
:21:18. > :21:20.HMS Penelope was bombed so often and had so many holes she was given the
:21:21. > :21:24.nickname HMS Pepperpot. Eventually she was sunk by a U`Boat off the
:21:25. > :21:28.Italian Coast. Today just seven men who served on HMS Penelope are still
:21:29. > :21:30.alive. Today one of them was given a special presentation to commemorate
:21:31. > :21:32.the 70th anniversary of the sinking. Steve Humphrey reports.
:21:33. > :21:35.These are the extraordinary photographs the resulted in HMS
:21:36. > :21:39.Penelope being given the name HMS Pepperpot. The holes were created by
:21:40. > :21:44.flying shrapnel. The German aircraft seemed to follow
:21:45. > :21:51.us around. The Admiralty stated it was the most bombed ship in World
:21:52. > :21:54.War II. In the Mediterranean Royal Navy ships were coming under almost
:21:55. > :21:58.constant attack. That's all you did, day in and day
:21:59. > :22:01.out, fire at aircraft coming down at you.
:22:02. > :22:06.HMS Penelope's luck ran out in February 1944 when she was sunk by a
:22:07. > :22:14.U`boat. Just under 400 men died, 206 survived, including Norman who spent
:22:15. > :22:24.two and a half hours in the water. If you couldn't swim, you drowned.
:22:25. > :22:28.And then others couldn't keep going. To mark the anniversary of the
:22:29. > :22:31.sinking of the ship, Norman was prevented with some special mementos
:22:32. > :22:37.by John Bush, who served in the Falklands on the most recent ship to
:22:38. > :22:40.be called HMS Penelope. We spent a lot of time in defence
:22:41. > :22:46.watches which is preparation for action in the Falklands. We were
:22:47. > :22:50.doing that for weeks at a time. These guys were doing it for years
:22:51. > :22:54.at a time and in far harsher conditions.
:22:55. > :23:07.Norman is certainly a survivor. He celebrates his 91st birthday on
:23:08. > :23:13.Friday. Let us get on to the weather and
:23:14. > :23:16.Alexis is with us. It has really been incredibly strong winds and
