:00:00. > :00:16.BBC Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to

:00:17. > :00:18.South Today. In tonight's programme: Seven years in jail for the

:00:19. > :00:21.fraudster who conned millionsof pounds out of investors to fund his

:00:22. > :00:25.lavish lifestyle. `he is a despicable man, I do not

:00:26. > :00:29.know how he can walk the earth. I wish there was a punishment that

:00:30. > :00:33.could suit him. Two cyclists die in Berkshire after

:00:34. > :00:35.being hit by a car involved in a police incident.

:00:36. > :00:38.The ongoing battle to stop yet more flooding with further severe weather

:00:39. > :00:42.warnings for the South. Saved for the nation and on display

:00:43. > :00:48.to the public ` the ring which was stopped from heading across the

:00:49. > :01:07.Atlantic. Charming, understated but it had a beauty all of its own. I am

:01:08. > :01:11.glad we never lost it. He pretended to be a trading genius

:01:12. > :01:14.capable of making millions of pounds on behalf of investors, but tonight

:01:15. > :01:17.Benjamin Wilson is starting a seven`year jail term. He ran a

:01:18. > :01:24.company that took in nearly ?22 million. When he was shut down, he

:01:25. > :01:30.owed people around ?17.5 million. It's estimated that only just over

:01:31. > :01:34.?5 million will ever be recovered. It was an elaborate scam. He used

:01:35. > :01:37.people's life savings to fund an extravagant lifestyle. After the

:01:38. > :01:40.authorities caught up with him, he pleaded guilty to fraud, forgery and

:01:41. > :01:42.running an unauthorised collective investment scheme. Here's our

:01:43. > :01:55.business correspondent, Alastair Fee.

:01:56. > :02:01.Arriving at Southwark Crown Court, the man who defrauded hundreds of

:02:02. > :02:04.people out of millions of pounds. 35`year`old Ben Wilson, described by

:02:05. > :02:11.the Financial Conduct Authority as charismatic, charming, manipulative

:02:12. > :02:18.and dishonest. 300 people put money in, none wanted to be identified.

:02:19. > :02:23.This woman lost ?125,000. What's happened is a web of lies, all the

:02:24. > :02:27.way through. It has left us without our retirement pot, shall we say. It

:02:28. > :02:33.means my husband still has to carry on working longer and I do not

:02:34. > :02:38.really know how we will call. We will have a very bad retirement when

:02:39. > :02:42.they planned have a good retirement. The prosecution was brought forward

:02:43. > :02:48.after lifting the lid on this scam in 2010. It has been operating in

:02:49. > :02:54.Dorset since 2003. Ben Wilson was a persuasive character, people were

:02:55. > :02:57.taken in by them. They believed that what he was telling him was a good

:02:58. > :03:00.thing and they thought they were making an investment that is correct

:03:01. > :03:06.for them and their family. The problem is with all of these things

:03:07. > :03:08.it is a house of cards and comes tumbling down and they did not

:03:09. > :03:12.realise that at the time because they were persuaded. With a

:03:13. > :03:18.professional looking brochure, this company did everything to convince

:03:19. > :03:21.people it was legitimate. To investors, Ben Wilson happy to be

:03:22. > :03:26.incredibly successful, the court has heard he claimed to bring in monthly

:03:27. > :03:32.charges of up to 9%. He took and everyone from friends to city

:03:33. > :03:41.dealers, getting up to ?1.5 million into the fund. Sure Investment was a

:03:42. > :03:46.fake scheme. Some to that of Bernie Madoff and the US, the fraudster who

:03:47. > :03:51.earned up to ?40 million ripping people off. It is a type of fraud in

:03:52. > :03:55.which investors receive quick returns from money invested by

:03:56. > :04:00.others. There is never enough money to be everyone back. And Malachi,

:04:01. > :04:06.Wilson only invested ?4 million and lost half of that money. He spent

:04:07. > :04:10.the cash on trips to Las Vegas, resources, fast cars and his biggest

:04:11. > :04:17.parties was a ?4 billion luxury home. His victims are fighting to

:04:18. > :04:25.get back their money. They have been told not to expect more than 31p for

:04:26. > :04:29.every ?1 invested. I think he is a despicable man and when I hear about

:04:30. > :04:32.what he has done to others and the friends of hers and the friends of

:04:33. > :04:38.his parents, and all that sort of thing, I cannot believe it. I do not

:04:39. > :04:41.know how he can walk this earth. I wish there was a punishment that

:04:42. > :04:48.suited him. Sentencing Benjamin Wilson, the QC told the court this

:04:49. > :04:52.was a shameful type of fraud and that the abuse of trust was on a

:04:53. > :04:56.massive scale and would have a lasting effect on his victims.

:04:57. > :04:59.Ben Wilson was jailed for seven years today and banned from being a

:05:00. > :05:09.company director for 15 years. Alastair Fee, BBC South Today.

:05:10. > :05:12.Two cyclists are dead and a man has been arrested after a suspected

:05:13. > :05:13.police pursuit in Berkshire. The crash happened in

:05:14. > :05:17.Purley`on`Thamesnear Reading last night. Thames Valley Police says a

:05:18. > :05:21.police vehicle at the scene was not involved in any collisions. But a

:05:22. > :05:26.police watchdog has been called in to investigate. Nikki Mitchell

:05:27. > :05:29.reports. Two candles burn in memory of the

:05:30. > :05:32.two cyclists killed here. People living nearby all described hearing

:05:33. > :05:35.a massive bang when the crash happened around nine o'clock last

:05:36. > :05:42.night. Many came out to see if they could help, but the police were

:05:43. > :05:47.already here. The police it seemed were chasing

:05:48. > :05:51.the car. As we heard the crash or as my partner's son heard the crash, as

:05:52. > :05:54.we got to the window, the police were already present, so we put two

:05:55. > :05:58.and two together and assumed that the police were chasing the car.

:05:59. > :06:01.The police, who carried out a second search of the scene today, still

:06:02. > :06:07.haven't confirmed or denied that they were pursuing the car. But the

:06:08. > :06:09.whole incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints

:06:10. > :06:12.Commission. The Thames Valley Force has said its officers were

:06:13. > :06:15.responding to reports that someone's safety was threatened at a home

:06:16. > :06:19.along Purley Rise. They then became aware of a black BMW convertible

:06:20. > :06:24.connected to the incident they were responding to.

:06:25. > :06:28.It was the BMW which is thought to have struck this lamp post before

:06:29. > :06:32.hitting two keen cyclists out for an evening ride. Those who knew or

:06:33. > :06:39.loved the men who died laid flowers by the roadside today. John Moorland

:06:40. > :06:48.was 30 and a father of two. Kris Jarvis was 39 and had five children.

:06:49. > :06:52."That's horrific. We had no idea anybody... We just saw the chap

:06:53. > :06:56.being taken out of the car. He was crying a bit, screaming. That was

:06:57. > :06:58.the only injury we saw. We didn't know there was anybody killed. You

:06:59. > :07:10.know, it's horrible. The 31`year`old driver of the BMW

:07:11. > :07:13.lives here in Purley`on`Thames. His injuries were treated by doctors at

:07:14. > :07:17.the Royal Berkshire Hospital. When he was discharged, he was then

:07:18. > :07:19.arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

:07:20. > :07:22.Downing Street's confirmed letter bombs sent to Army careers offices

:07:23. > :07:25.in the South bore the hallmarks of Northern Ireland`related terrorism.

:07:26. > :07:28.What's been described as a crude but viable device was discovered at the

:07:29. > :07:32.office in St Mary's Butts in Reading on Tuesday. Yesterday one was found

:07:33. > :07:34.in Oxford. Others have been found in Aldershot, Brighton, Slough and

:07:35. > :07:41.Kent. No group has claimed responsibility.

:07:42. > :07:44.A 20`year`old has been sentenced to five years' detention for killing a

:07:45. > :07:47.man who was crushed by a train at Guildford Station last year. Joshua

:07:48. > :07:50.Elphick, who's from the town, punched Ryan Harrison during a

:07:51. > :07:53.drunken brawl, knocking him onto the rails. Two other 20`year`olds were

:07:54. > :07:59.also sentenced for affray for their part in the fight. Rob Powell

:08:00. > :08:02.reports. A Saturday night last year at

:08:03. > :08:06.Guildford Station ` an argument breaks out between two groups of

:08:07. > :08:10.men. Ryan Harrison and Joel Parish ` whose faces have been obscured `

:08:11. > :08:14.have just got on. Joel Parish is hit by Joshua Elphick, who had been

:08:15. > :08:18.getting off at Guildford. Both men are pulled onto the platform where

:08:19. > :08:21.Ryan Harrison is hit. Ryan falls between the train and the platform.

:08:22. > :08:29.Seconds later the train starts moving.

:08:30. > :08:34.Brian Harrison was struck by a moving train and died instantly. The

:08:35. > :08:41.whole family is completely destroyed. What happened will always

:08:42. > :08:45.stay with us. We will never forget. We are trying to rebuild our lives

:08:46. > :08:50.but it is really hard. At Guildford Crown Court Joshua Elphick who had

:08:51. > :08:54.punched Ryan Nelsen eight and earlier pleaded guilty to his

:08:55. > :08:57.manslaughter, was sentenced to five years detention in the youth

:08:58. > :09:02.offenders institution. He will serve half of this term. Two other men,

:09:03. > :09:06.Jack Hardy and Harry Miller, were sentenced to 12 months in the youth

:09:07. > :09:11.offenders institution after being guilty of a free. One other man by

:09:12. > :09:18.the name of Adam was found not guilty. This has been Kos by alcohol

:09:19. > :09:22.fuelled violence and anti`social behaviour. The type of behaviour

:09:23. > :09:27.that is conducted throughout the behaviour of many towns and cities.

:09:28. > :09:30.Nobody realised unfortunately the dangers of behaving in that manner

:09:31. > :09:35.around a really station. Sentencing today, the judge said any sober

:09:36. > :09:39.person would have seen that fighting at the station could have led to

:09:40. > :09:43.someone falling on the tracks. Addressing the defendants he told

:09:44. > :09:47.them you could have walked away and you should have walked away.

:09:48. > :09:50.Campaigners opposed to millions of pounds of council cuts in West

:09:51. > :09:53.Sussex have disrupted a meeting about budget cuts. Protesters from

:09:54. > :09:56.the group Don't Cut Us Out interrupted the meeting by shouting

:09:57. > :09:59.from the public gallery. They were protesting against cuts to adult

:10:00. > :10:01.social care under the budget which sees council tax being frozen.

:10:02. > :10:04.Despite the disturbance, the Conservative`led council approved

:10:05. > :10:13.?55 million worth of cuts in a two`year savings plan.

:10:14. > :10:19.Still to come in this evening's South Today: if you are concerned at

:10:20. > :10:24.all about the weather, stay with us because we will have all the details

:10:25. > :10:31.for the weekend. Tony Husband will be easier with the sport and

:10:32. > :10:36.also... Almost lost to America... The historic ring which has been

:10:37. > :10:39.brought back home. There are three severe weather

:10:40. > :10:43.warnings tonight for areas along the south coast, as the storms show no

:10:44. > :10:46.signs of abating. Lymington and Keyhaven, Christchurch Harbour and

:10:47. > :10:50.Portland have all been put on alert, with a severe warning meaning danger

:10:51. > :10:58.to life. It follows another day of heavy rain, with strong winds now

:10:59. > :11:01.picking up across the region. The Army has been out in Reading helping

:11:02. > :11:05.with sandbags and the Navy has been trying to avert flooding in Romsey.

:11:06. > :11:12.It's from just outside Romsey that we can join our reporter Ben Moore

:11:13. > :11:16.tonight. Ben. Thank you very much, Sally. You can

:11:17. > :11:23.hear that the wind is getting up behind me. We are not of Romsey and

:11:24. > :11:28.under this bridge which the Army have been reinforcing the river of

:11:29. > :11:33.all`day and what that has done is divert the river, as you can see out

:11:34. > :11:37.onto the flood plain. It is a difficult river to manage. It split

:11:38. > :11:40.into four different parts and the idea is that the water can be put

:11:41. > :11:44.onto the flood plain, and to those channels that is divert around the

:11:45. > :11:48.town of Romsey. That's channel that goes through the main part of Romsey

:11:49. > :11:55.will stop flooding and perhaps homes and businesses can be saved. We were

:11:56. > :11:58.on one area to the where businesses are worried you to the closure

:11:59. > :12:03.because of the flooding and they cannot get supplies in or out.

:12:04. > :12:09.Selling cars as nigh`on impossible when abroad as a river. Garage owner

:12:10. > :12:13.Steve Carlyle had only 20 minutes to bring staff and supplies into work

:12:14. > :12:17.this morning. I totally understand that it has to be shut but I feel as

:12:18. > :12:23.a business, you cannot simply stop the business. We have things to do

:12:24. > :12:27.and bills to pay, customers that wants to collect vehicles and I am

:12:28. > :12:34.willing to carry on but they are not letting us. The roadblock here is

:12:35. > :12:38.designed to stay, concrete blocks rather than sandbags banning all

:12:39. > :12:46.traffic. There are 30 to 40 businesses on this trading estate,

:12:47. > :12:50.no deliveries is not an option. If we do not get the order so we do not

:12:51. > :12:56.get paid. We are an independent company and we must remain open to

:12:57. > :13:01.survive. Homes are also being defended from the bloated river. HMS

:13:02. > :13:07.Collingwood was again making the trip inland to sandbagged houses in

:13:08. > :13:12.this area. Just north of year, the river terrace separates into

:13:13. > :13:16.multiple channels. The main channel runs through the centre of town and

:13:17. > :13:19.the others run past the outskirts. More water is being forced into

:13:20. > :13:27.these, hopefully to protect the centre of Romsey. Israel that

:13:28. > :13:37.prevention is better than each year. They are some areas that are free or

:13:38. > :13:42.five feet submerged underwater. I think they have done well. At least

:13:43. > :13:45.there is no shortage of defence 's ear. The Army have been using

:13:46. > :13:55.thousands of sandbags secured from local farms by MP Caroline Dinenage

:13:56. > :13:59.to secure the local river banks. Some places it completely broke down

:14:00. > :14:04.and we have tried to reinforce that. River levels continue to rise as her

:14:05. > :14:08.fears for homes and businesses in this tone. Joining me now is David

:14:09. > :14:15.Robinson from the Environment Agency. How are you managing to

:14:16. > :14:19.shore up the river terrace? It is very difficult and Romsey, we are

:14:20. > :14:22.right on the edge year. There is a huge amount of water coming down the

:14:23. > :14:27.river at the moment and we have had unprecedented volumes of rainfall.

:14:28. > :14:31.We obviously have a lot of rain falling on saturated ground already,

:14:32. > :14:35.so it is a real problem managing the water over the river terrace. What

:14:36. > :14:38.we are doing and Romsey is having a look at how we can manage the flow

:14:39. > :14:42.through the central channel that runs through the town. The Army has

:14:43. > :14:46.been making sure that the river banks are strong as they can be and

:14:47. > :14:51.we will be looking over the next couple of days with our professional

:14:52. > :15:00.partners, the Lukla authorities, with the Army, with the emergency

:15:01. > :15:04.services, is what he can do to try and make things better around the

:15:05. > :15:09.flood plain. You have warnings in place and have some advice. That is

:15:10. > :15:17.correct, three severe warnings are around the coast for Lymington,

:15:18. > :15:22.Christchurch and Portland. That means there is a risk to life, so we

:15:23. > :15:28.are urging people to call our flood plain number. You can get that

:15:29. > :15:32.online. Please stay safe, if you have any concerns, listen to your

:15:33. > :15:39.local radio station or tune into local TV. Thank you very much,

:15:40. > :15:43.David. You can see the river levels continue to rise but hotly there

:15:44. > :15:50.will be some respite over the weekend. `` but hopefully.

:15:51. > :15:53.On the Sunday Politics this weekend we're going to be asking whether we

:15:54. > :15:57.can afford the cost of protecting everywhere that may be at risk of

:15:58. > :16:00.flooding and whether we need to change regulations about where you

:16:01. > :16:02.can and can't build. That's Sunday Politics, on Sunday, on BBC One at

:16:03. > :16:05.11am. Six people have gone on trial

:16:06. > :16:08.accused of murdering a jeweller at Fernhurst in West Sussex.

:16:09. > :16:11.59`year`old Michael Griffiths' body was found tied`up at his home which

:16:12. > :16:14.had been set on fire. It's claimed burglars had tortured Mr Griffiths

:16:15. > :16:21.to try to steal two valuable diamonds. Six people deny murder.

:16:22. > :16:26.Sean Killick reports. It was seven o'clock in the morning

:16:27. > :16:30.on January the 24th last year when a woman noticed smoke coming out of

:16:31. > :16:34.her neighbour's house and West Sussex. She raised the alarm and

:16:35. > :16:37.firefighters found the front door jammed but forced their way inside

:16:38. > :16:42.and discovered behind the door the body of a man. Prosecutor Christine

:16:43. > :16:48.Lang told the jury to the that the man had known X `` legs between the

:16:49. > :16:52.knees and he had not managed to escape the blaze. Once the

:16:53. > :16:56.firefighters had tackled the fire, Ms Lang said they had discovered

:16:57. > :16:59.this was no tragic accident. The man was mad legs and hands had been tied

:17:00. > :17:04.with cables and his head`series and injured. Later examination showed he

:17:05. > :17:08.had been tortured and the fire was started deliberately with petrol.

:17:09. > :17:12.Sussex Police has since launched a murder investigation. The victim was

:17:13. > :17:17.59`year`old Michael Griffiths who had worked at an auction years and

:17:18. > :17:21.was a self`employed jeweller at a workshop at his own home. Ms Lang

:17:22. > :17:26.said that it was common knowledge that Mr Griffiths owned two diamonds

:17:27. > :17:31.worth around ?40,000. The prosecution believe the burglars

:17:32. > :17:37.tortured him to try to get him to open the safe but he did use and it

:17:38. > :17:41.remained locked. Mr Griffiths was killed and his house set on fire to

:17:42. > :17:44.destroy the evidence. Anne Hall seven people are on trial in

:17:45. > :17:49.connection with the death of this man. One woman and five men deny the

:17:50. > :17:55.murder. Six defendants denied the conspiracy to prevent the course of

:17:56. > :17:59.justice. Three of these people have pleaded guilty. The child is

:18:00. > :18:01.expected to last for several weeks. Measures aimed at increasing

:18:02. > :18:04.capacity, reducing congestion and increasing average speeds may be

:18:05. > :18:08.introduced on the M3. The Highways Agency is consulting on the plans

:18:09. > :18:12.which would also see the day time speed limit reduced to 60 miles per

:18:13. > :18:19.hour between Junctions 3 and four ` Lightwater to Farnborough. That's to

:18:20. > :18:23.reduce emissions that are forecast to breach air quality limits. The

:18:24. > :18:27.weather is likely to hit this weekend's sporting programme. Tony's

:18:28. > :18:38.here to look ahead to a big weekend in three different cup competitions,

:18:39. > :18:42.weather permitting. Tony. The situation is very fluid, thank

:18:43. > :18:46.you, Sally. In what's sure to be a wet weekend,

:18:47. > :18:50.we did have interest in three FA competitions across the region with

:18:51. > :18:53.teams in the FA Cup, the FA Trophy and the FA Vase. Southampton hope to

:18:54. > :18:56.keep their cup hopes alive at the Stadium of Light. There's Anne Hall

:18:57. > :18:58.Hampshire tie in the semifinals of the FA Trophy with that first leg

:18:59. > :19:01.between Havant Waterlooville and Gosport Borough. While Sholing are

:19:02. > :19:05.still in the hunt for Wembley, and the last hour their FA vies fifth

:19:06. > :19:09.round tie against Larkhall has been postponed. Southampton travel to

:19:10. > :19:16.Sunderland for the third time this season hoping to win on Wearside for

:19:17. > :19:19.the first time. They are safe in the Premier League so a cup run would be

:19:20. > :19:23.a big bonus for them after making several changes in victories in

:19:24. > :19:30.rounds three and four, while the manager moved closer to a food then

:19:31. > :19:34.say tomorrow? There is a great incentive for us to proceed in this

:19:35. > :19:38.tournament. We will try to do something special and this

:19:39. > :19:41.competition. But we have a difficult day on Saturday against Sunderland.

:19:42. > :19:46.We have not beaten them this season. They have had great form recently

:19:47. > :19:50.and they dominated the first half against us in the last match. So it

:19:51. > :19:54.will be a difficult game but we are desperate to do well in this

:19:55. > :19:58.competition and get you into the next round. That kicks off tomorrow

:19:59. > :20:02.at 12:45pm. You can listen to it on Radio
