:00:18. > :00:22.one of their biggest ever campaigns. Deadly dust ` the beach huts in
:00:23. > :00:25.Poole contaminated with asbestos. Green is the colour ` celebrating St

:00:31. > :00:39.And it's Pup Idol ` the search for an operatic dog to take centre stage
:00:40. > :00:44.in La Boheme. Whichever dog deserves it `` gets it
:00:45. > :00:58.deserves it. They are all so lovely. A victim shot in both legs. Four men
:00:59. > :01:01.stabbed in one night. And a fatal shooting described as a gang
:01:02. > :01:04.execution. These are some of the outbreaks of drug`related crime in
:01:05. > :01:08.just one city, Southampton, in the past two years. Police across the
:01:09. > :01:11.South are worried about the spread of London drug gangs onto the south
:01:12. > :01:14.coast. Two years ago, Hampshire officers launched a crackdown on the
:01:15. > :01:17.gangs, called Operation Fortress. They are now spreading this across
:01:18. > :01:23.the county in one of their biggest ever campaigns. Emma Vardy has this
:01:24. > :01:26.exclusive report. Hampshire police say they've made
:01:27. > :01:30.more than 300 arrests since their crackdown on drug dealers began.
:01:31. > :01:35.Most recently, a gang from London were jailed for a total of 90 years
:01:36. > :01:44.for the shooting of Jahmel Jones at a flat in St Mary's in Southampton.
:01:45. > :01:48.Police have put a number of dealers behind bars under the operation, but
:01:49. > :01:52.say they are always up against the threat of new organised gangs moving
:01:53. > :01:55.in, often coming here from London or further afield.
:01:56. > :01:59.This man was formerly a low level dealer in Southampton and himself a
:02:00. > :02:06.heroin addict for many years. He spoke to us about the way the drugs
:02:07. > :02:09.gangs operate. A lot of people I out there using drugs. It creates
:02:10. > :02:16.competition between the dealers. Once they are established, they will
:02:17. > :02:21.rely on people from Southampton, addicts, to take out of the
:02:22. > :02:24.business. They will coerce them. If you are shifting thousands of pounds
:02:25. > :02:27.of money and drugs, you need security. The simplest thing to do
:02:28. > :02:31.is get a gun. This AK47 was found by police at a
:02:32. > :02:35.house in Lymmington along with a large quantity of Benzocaine, a
:02:36. > :02:38.substance used to cut other drugs. Before now Operation Fortress was
:02:39. > :02:46.predominantly targeting Southampton, but it's now being rolled out across
:02:47. > :02:49.the rest of Hampshire. During the course of the operation, we have
:02:50. > :02:53.been successfully recovering far wrong from the streets. We can
:02:54. > :02:57.demonstrate the numbers of drug`related violence crimes has
:02:58. > :02:59.dropped significantly. Far more users are going in for treatment
:03:00. > :03:03.now. At the Bridge, a drugs advice centre
:03:04. > :03:06.and needle exchange in Southampton, the team have been working with
:03:07. > :03:12.police to try and help vulnerable addicts who've become victims of
:03:13. > :03:20.violence and intimidation. They are so fearful of what they
:03:21. > :03:24.have got mixed up in that often they can't see the woods for the trees.
:03:25. > :03:29.They can't see a way out. We are saying, look, come into get
:03:30. > :03:35.treatment. You don't have to leave that lifestyle. We can offer you a
:03:36. > :03:38.way out. `` lead that lifestyle. In St Mary's, where a number of
:03:39. > :03:42.violent drug related incidents have taken place, the community says it's
:03:43. > :03:45.trying to get rid of the stigma attached to the area.
:03:46. > :03:51.You have got no more families living here, decent people. It is just on
:03:52. > :04:00.those S state to have individuals who tend to stand out. `` Estates.
:04:01. > :04:04.Hampshire police say there will be more raids like Vista, and that,
:04:05. > :04:08.armed with the knowledge and experience the team have built up,
:04:09. > :04:17.they are hoping to become even more effective at making this a hostile
:04:18. > :04:21.place for drug dealers in future. Our home affairs correspondent is
:04:22. > :04:26.here now. Recently we have a high profile case of those killers being
:04:27. > :04:30.sent to jail. What other successes have Hampshire police had? They are
:04:31. > :04:34.trying to remove the dealers that are further up the supply chain.
:04:35. > :04:38.They are the ones they say are bringing violence to Hampshire and
:04:39. > :04:43.posing the greatest threat. If we look at the numbers, 66 people have
:04:44. > :04:50.been convicted under the operation of drugs offences and other crimes.
:04:51. > :04:55.?190,000 of drugs has been seized by police and taken off the streets. In
:04:56. > :05:00.addition, ?150,000 of cash has been taken away from criminals through
:05:01. > :05:03.the proceeds of crime act. The Lee said that with all this work they
:05:04. > :05:10.have also seen drug`related violence decrease. It is having an impact.
:05:11. > :05:15.Why do they need to expand the operation out? Police say
:05:16. > :05:18.Southampton was the focus but the problem of drug dealers isn't
:05:19. > :05:22.related to the city. They are going to pull it out across Hampshire. The
:05:23. > :05:27.problem police have is because we have seen covering all is coming
:05:28. > :05:36.here from other cities, even when some are convicted, others can come
:05:37. > :05:39.into take their place. Work is under way today to remove
:05:40. > :05:42.potentially dangerous asbestos from dozens of beach huts in Poole.
:05:43. > :05:46.Workers in protective suits have been called in to the seafront
:05:47. > :05:49.properties. But the council won't be removing asbestos from all of the
:05:50. > :05:52.town's beach huts at the moment. It says it's safe as long as beach hut
:05:53. > :05:54.users don't starting interfering with the material. Steve Humphrey
:05:55. > :05:57.reports. They are not taking any chances with
:05:58. > :06:05.the asbestos and information work at these beach huts into. They have got
:06:06. > :06:08.special air loss to stop any fibres getting out. Workers are in
:06:09. > :06:15.protective clothing as even an on`site decontamination unit. These
:06:16. > :06:21.beach huts are 40 years old and as a source was used in the floor tiles.
:06:22. > :06:25.`` as best. The work is being done because the council is trying to
:06:26. > :06:29.find out how water getting into these popular buildings. It is quite
:06:30. > :06:33.a job but we have got to make sure that it is done properly, that the
:06:34. > :06:38.people doing the work are safe and that the public is safe as well. So,
:06:39. > :06:45.yes, it looks extreme and times. But we have got to do the job properly.
:06:46. > :06:48.The removal work has been attracting plenty of attention from people
:06:49. > :06:55.enjoying the sunshine on the seafront. I think they are taking
:06:56. > :06:59.precautions. It doesn't bother me. The thing that would bother me is
:07:00. > :07:07.that it has been there for 40 years! They should know what they
:07:08. > :07:13.are doing by now. When you can see all the gear, what do you think when
:07:14. > :07:17.you see something like that happening? Anybody would feel
:07:18. > :07:21.reassured that they are doing it the right way rather than on the cheap.
:07:22. > :07:28.Altogether, asbestos is being removed from that is its beach huts
:07:29. > :07:31.ear. The council says there will still be asbestos in other beach
:07:32. > :07:37.huts but that it is safe as long as it is not disturbed. We have a
:07:38. > :07:42.number of older buildings on the beach. We tell people to contact us
:07:43. > :07:47.before they do any work on the building so we can warn them about
:07:48. > :07:52.precautions. The work you is being done by a special contractor who
:07:53. > :08:02.says it is following all of the regulations for asbestos removal.
:08:03. > :08:06.So what has George done for you lately? At the beginning of Budget
:08:07. > :08:08.week, all eyes are turning to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and
:08:09. > :08:11.Wednesday's statement from Mr Osborne. But how did last year's
:08:12. > :08:14.Despatch Box announcements affect the lives of businesses and
:08:15. > :08:16.communities in the South? Our business correspondent, Alastair
:08:17. > :08:19.Fee, has been finding out. The slow years are over and orders
:08:20. > :08:24.are up. This Berkshire factory makes gearboxes for the motorsport
:08:25. > :08:26.industry. Business in the last 12 months has grown significantly. It
:08:27. > :08:31.is over a year since I was last here. At the time, doing business
:08:32. > :08:35.was still far from easy. It is a different picture now. How much of
:08:36. > :08:41.this improved climate is a direct result of government help?
:08:42. > :08:45.Confidence is needed in the marketplace. Any measures the
:08:46. > :08:51.government put in to make people feel better help, but with us it is
:08:52. > :08:57.nearly 90% export. We are looking at business from Japan and Europe being
:08:58. > :09:01.what has lifted our story. So not necessarily driven by the
:09:02. > :09:07.government? Unfortunately not. They have not damaged it but they have
:09:08. > :09:11.not been the answer, either. In his 2013 Budget, the Chancellor
:09:12. > :09:13.announced a number of initiatives. There are measures to increase
:09:14. > :09:26.lending. None of these initiatives are bad.
:09:27. > :09:31.They haven't made a significant difference, in my view. The economy
:09:32. > :09:35.goes up and down. The classic thing at the moment is to blame everybody
:09:36. > :09:39.else for how it went down and take with the credit when it goes up. But
:09:40. > :09:44.there is a normal cycle here. A lot of what is going on is to do with
:09:45. > :09:48.the general movement of the economy. We need to be exporting and
:09:49. > :09:52.manufacturing more. We need something other than a consumer
:09:53. > :09:58.driven economy. Easier said than done. Here, the last three months
:09:59. > :10:03.have been the best 2007. They are making more and exports have
:10:04. > :10:05.increased by 50%. It is an enviable position. For a sustainable
:10:06. > :10:07.recovery, this week, the government will need to have more companies do
:10:08. > :10:26.the same. `` to help. The village was badly hit. The
:10:27. > :10:30.chairman of its flood action group has said he is hopeful the rules
:10:31. > :10:40.about which place gets new flood defences will change.
:10:41. > :10:44.Still to come in this evening's South Today: Who has won Pup Idol
:10:45. > :10:54.and will be treading the boards at the King's Theatre?
:10:55. > :10:57.Beaches in the South could be stripped of their designation as
:10:58. > :11:00.safe bathing waters under tough new laws. The Environment Agency has
:11:01. > :11:03.released a national list of 45 beaches in the firing line, which
:11:04. > :11:06.includes beach Green in Lancing, Southsea, and Bembridge. There are
:11:07. > :11:09.fears that threatened closures could cause huge damage to the local
:11:10. > :11:18.economy. Sean Killick is at Southsea beach.
:11:19. > :11:23.Southsea beat is popular with tourists. Thousands were here at the
:11:24. > :11:26.weekend enjoying the sunshine. A question has arisen over the quality
:11:27. > :11:31.of the bathing water. The Environment Agency has to enforce
:11:32. > :11:38.new EU regulations which I tried `` twice as stringent as the current
:11:39. > :11:44.one. On these, Southsea would fail. It has raised concern among local
:11:45. > :11:49.businesses. On a hot day, everybody wants to go to the beach. They will
:11:50. > :11:54.walk through, get some sandwiches, drinks, etc, and take them to the
:11:55. > :11:59.beach. We will be affected by it. Nobody is going to want to go and
:12:00. > :12:08.swim in horrible sewage water. Why can't they sort it out? The
:12:09. > :12:11.opposition leader here says she plans to table an emergency question
:12:12. > :12:19.on this issue tomorrow's full council meeting. This would have a
:12:20. > :12:24.devastating effect on Portsmouth and the Portsmouth economy. We are a
:12:25. > :12:29.city that thrives on tourism. We have a robust seafront strategy. If
:12:30. > :12:33.the Environment Agency are saying that our beach is not safe for
:12:34. > :12:38.bathing, for public swimming, this would be a disaster for Portsmouth.
:12:39. > :12:45.I'm joined by the leader of the city council, Gerald Jackson. What are
:12:46. > :12:52.you doing about this? The water is tested in three places. It has
:12:53. > :12:58.always been fine in two places but we have had a problem here. We have
:12:59. > :13:02.now sorted that. For a while we thought there was a problem. We
:13:03. > :13:06.thought there was a dream coming from the peer that was broken. We're
:13:07. > :13:14.confident that this year all of the beaches will be passing with flying
:13:15. > :13:21.colours. The Environment Agency this has been
:13:22. > :13:26.going on for 20 years. Absolutely, but luckily we have been able to get
:13:27. > :13:32.in the and get it sorted so there is not our problem now. What would your
:13:33. > :13:36.message be to bathers who are concerned? There is nothing to be
:13:37. > :13:42.worried about. All of the beaches here are going to be fine. Two out
:13:43. > :13:46.of three have official approval. The last one we think this year will go
:13:47. > :13:50.with flying colours. Come and have a great time. It is wonderful here.
:13:51. > :13:59.Thank you. It is a bit cold, I have to say.
:14:00. > :14:03.The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were with the First Battalion Irish
:14:04. > :14:09.Guards in Aldershot today to mark St Patrick's day. Prince William is
:14:10. > :14:12.Colonel of the Regiment. But it was his wife who took centre stage,
:14:13. > :14:15.presenting traditional sprigs of shamrock on the parade ground. The
:14:16. > :14:18.Duchess wore a stylish emerald green coat and an Irish Guards brooch,
:14:19. > :14:20.which is a Royal Family heirloom. Nikki Mitchell was there.
:14:21. > :14:26.The tradition of presenting shamrocks to the Irish Guards dates
:14:27. > :14:29.back over a century. In the last few years, the Duchess of Cambridge has
:14:30. > :14:33.made the bold her own, winning the hearts and minds of the first
:14:34. > :14:36.Battalion and their families. She was lovely but the girls were
:14:37. > :14:46.fighting over who would hold the flowers. She was very good. She
:14:47. > :14:51.said, are they for me? I think she thought she would never get away
:14:52. > :15:00.otherwise. Shows a genuine interest in people and what they are talking
:15:01. > :15:04.about. It is not false, but genuine. Following in the Queen Mother's
:15:05. > :15:08.footsteps, she was wearing the same gold Cartier Shamrock broach the
:15:09. > :15:18.Queen Mother used to wear on her Patrick 's day visit. The duke and
:15:19. > :15:20.duchess also met the cadets. Raymond Collister post the inevitable
:15:21. > :15:25.question of whether or not the duke and duchess were planning to have
:15:26. > :15:35.another mini cadet of their own. Prince William told him... When time
:15:36. > :15:43.allows! Year matter we had a little chat about football. `` we had a
:15:44. > :15:48.little chat about football. The duchess made sure nobody was missed
:15:49. > :15:57.out today. Even the wolfhound had a sprig of Shamrock had `` pinned to
:15:58. > :16:03.his tune it. This is his third time eating the duchess. He seems to have
:16:04. > :16:10.enjoyed it as always. Perhaps hardly tell, though. Nobody has ever heard
:16:11. > :16:13.him bark! Their Royal Highness is posed for photographs before
:16:14. > :16:24.finishing their visit in the cookhouse and the officers' mess.
:16:25. > :16:30.Now, they say that every dog has its day. Well, for one young pup, that
:16:31. > :16:33.day was today. The King's Theatre, Southsea, has been auditioning local
:16:34. > :16:36.dogs to take the role of Muzetta's pet in the Italian opera La Boheme,
:16:37. > :16:39.Southsea's very own Pup Idol. Frankie Peck went down to see the
:16:40. > :16:41.pooches take on Puccini. The budding actors all held their
:16:42. > :16:45.nerve as they waited patiently in the wings. Not a sniff Orbach could
:16:46. > :16:49.be heard as they prepare to show the judges their talents. I thought it
:16:50. > :16:57.was going to be easy but it is not. The dogs all look so beautiful and
:16:58. > :17:02.cute. They were so well`behaved. It is going to be difficult to make a
:17:03. > :17:07.decision. For this part you don't need to be a good singer, you don't
:17:08. > :17:11.even need to understand Italian. What the producers are looking for
:17:12. > :17:14.is obedient and also being frightened by bright lights or loud
:17:15. > :17:18.noises could be a problem. Colin here is one of six dogs who are in
:17:19. > :17:27.for the running for the Park today. Good boy, Colin! It is not quite
:17:28. > :17:31.Puccini, but this loud music was played in the theatre lights were
:17:32. > :17:34.turned up to make sure the dogs were not easily distracted. It is not the
:17:35. > :17:37.biggest part within the performance, but for these proud
:17:38. > :17:42.owners there was a chance to show off the tricks their pups could do.
:17:43. > :17:49.There were number of roles but no sausages. He did really well. He had
:17:50. > :17:52.a bit of fun. He got on well with the other dogs. Whichever dog gets
:17:53. > :18:02.it is really deserving. They are so cute. To see how Colin would react
:18:03. > :18:06.in the lights, everybody just falls in love with him. They all call his
:18:07. > :18:16.name. They don't know our name but they called his. The winning is...
:18:17. > :18:25.Tex! Here he is. He is here with his owner. Well done, Tex. You were
:18:26. > :18:29.wonderful. Why did he win? Because he is well`behaved. We will find out
:18:30. > :18:35.in the next couple of minutes! What did you have to do? I e`mailed and
:18:36. > :18:41.put him in for it. I got a phone call to say he had been selected for
:18:42. > :18:50.the last six. Today we went and there were six of us. I got a phone
:18:51. > :18:54.call. Is he quirky? He is cheeky. He has got a real character. He is very
:18:55. > :19:01.good. He has done a lot of training and a lot of shows. He won a
:19:02. > :19:10.competition catching sausages. That is not difficult, is it, for a dog!
:19:11. > :19:18.Believe it, a lot of them can't. How old is he? He is three. They must
:19:19. > :19:21.have been looking for star quality. He was very calm. Everybody tells
:19:22. > :19:28.me, because I haven't seen anything that was on earlier, he walked
:19:29. > :19:33.really nicely. He had to be calm. He has to like other people. He is very
:19:34. > :19:42.friendly. I could take him home. He has got an understudy. Yes. She did
:19:43. > :19:52.not like him. He is going to be all right going on stage? Loved it. On
:19:53. > :20:04.the night, what does he do? I have to take him on. You are in it? I am
:20:05. > :20:10.in it. A singing part? I hope not! So you are going to be part of it. I
:20:11. > :20:17.will be on the stage so he knows I am close. This is all for fun, isn't
:20:18. > :20:23.it? Yes, and I think he will soak it up. He is people friendly, as you
:20:24. > :20:32.can see. Look, I am covered! Look at this. It is great to meet you.
:20:33. > :20:42.Lovely to meet you. Somebody else who is singing for his supper
:20:43. > :20:56.tonight is Tony. I am covered! Tex is great. It is a good job that
:20:57. > :21:01.Lynne joined him on the sofa. There was a big controversy back in 2012
:21:02. > :21:11.to do with the Dorset tae kwon do star.
:21:12. > :21:14.Dorset's Aaron Cook won gold at Taekwondo's Dutch Open, and in doing
:21:15. > :21:17.so defeated the man who was controversially selected ahead of
:21:18. > :21:21.him for the London Olympics. In a long`awaited rematch, this was the
:21:22. > :21:24.first time the pair have met since Team GB selectors opted for Lutalo
:21:25. > :21:27.Muhammad ahead of Cook, despite the Dorchester fighter being ranked
:21:28. > :21:31.world number one at the time. Cook, seen here in blue, won the bout in
:21:32. > :21:36.Eindhoven 10`8 to take the title. He's now won three of the first four
:21:37. > :21:39.tournaments of the season. In football, Southampton made it
:21:40. > :21:44.consecutive wins with a 4`2 victory over Norwich at St Mary's. An early
:21:45. > :21:47.goal from midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin got things up and
:21:48. > :21:50.running after a slick passing move. Rickie Lambert then made it two
:21:51. > :21:54.within a minute of coming off the bench in the second half. Lambert
:21:55. > :21:57.then laid on a third for fellow international Jay Rodriguez in front
:21:58. > :22:00.of the England manager Roy Hodgson. But a couple of late mistakes seemed
:22:01. > :22:05.to offer Norwich a lifeline, this goal making it 3`2. But then a
:22:06. > :22:09.breakaway goal for young striker Sam Gallagher, his first Premier League
:22:10. > :22:20.goal for the club, wrapped up the win that moves Saints up to eighth.
