:00:00. > :00:14.Hello, good to have you with us. A over on the BBC News

:00:15. > :00:17.Hello, good to have you with us. A BBC investigation has discovered

:00:18. > :00:21.that St Mary's hospital on the Isle of Wight has no consultants at all

:00:22. > :00:24.on its wards on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The investigation looked

:00:25. > :00:32.at staffing over one weekend in December.

:00:33. > :00:36.Maria Lynch is an emergency consultant on the Isle of Wight. She

:00:37. > :00:40.works one weekend every month ` on the ward in the morning and on call

:00:41. > :00:45.in the afternoon, when often there are no consultants in the hospital

:00:46. > :00:49.at all. Every weekend one of us will be here from 8am and we take a

:00:50. > :00:55.handover from the night registrar and we work through until around

:00:56. > :00:59.lunchtime. At that point, we may go home and have lunch and we can get

:01:00. > :01:08.called back for all major trauma, burns, accidents on the road. We

:01:09. > :01:12.come back for every sort of event. This patient has broken his ankle.

:01:13. > :01:17.A is one area where the NHS believes weekend cover is especially

:01:18. > :01:22.important. But for small hospitals like this one, that's difficult. The

:01:23. > :01:25.total number of consultants working here is 80 and actually there

:01:26. > :01:29.wouldn't be that much work for those consultants to do even if they were

:01:30. > :01:36.here. Never mind the cost involved of putting on that level of cover.

:01:37. > :01:41.Many larger hospitals do have consultants working on the wards at

:01:42. > :01:43.weekends and even operating. This team at Southampton General are

:01:44. > :01:50.doing regular brain surgery procedures on Saturdays. I think

:01:51. > :01:53.there are some people like myself and the anaesthetic team who

:01:54. > :01:57.actually might prefer to work the odd Saturday. It is an efficient,

:01:58. > :02:02.effective list and is quite enjoyable. The NHS wants to see more

:02:03. > :02:08.of this to help improve patient care throughout the week. This whole

:02:09. > :02:11.argument goes beyond hospitals. It goes into the availability of

:02:12. > :02:15.primary care at the weekends and also the availability of community

:02:16. > :02:18.and social services. So the hospitals are simply one component

:02:19. > :02:23.of a much bigger issue that we have to tackle on behalf of our society.

:02:24. > :02:26.For smaller hospitals like St Mary's, recruiting consultants isn't

:02:27. > :02:34.easy and working them at weekends will cost an extra ?2 or ?3 million

:02:35. > :02:36.a year. Detectives are investigating

:02:37. > :02:41.allegations Jimmy Savile abused children at two children's homes in

:02:42. > :02:43.the south. Police and local authorities are looking into

:02:44. > :02:50.incidents at Broomfield Children's Home in Guildford and an unnamed

:02:51. > :02:54.children's home in Bournemouth. Jimmy Savile adored the view from

:02:55. > :03:01.his holiday flat in East Cliff, a flat he bought in the 1970s and

:03:02. > :03:05.owned until his death. Bournemouth I find a very gentle place, full of

:03:06. > :03:10.very nice gentle people and very, very attractive ladies, thank

:03:11. > :03:16.goodness! Chilling words by a man police have since labelled as a

:03:17. > :03:21.prolific sex offender. A man often spotted running along the seafront

:03:22. > :03:24.here. Now the Department for Education has asked the council to

:03:25. > :03:29.investigate a single historic allegation of abuse carried out at a

:03:30. > :03:33.local children's home. We have been given the witness's statement and we

:03:34. > :03:35.have been given some guidance about our role in terms of investigating

:03:36. > :03:43.that allegation and reporting procedures back to the Department

:03:44. > :03:47.for Education. Do you know the name of the home involved? No, we don't.

:03:48. > :03:51.We have very sketchy information about the time scales, the home and

:03:52. > :03:59.that obviously will be our urgent priority to establish the facts as

:04:00. > :04:01.soon as we can. As well as his holiday flat, Jimmy Savile had

:04:02. > :04:05.business interests in Bournemouth and it is thought he owned this

:04:06. > :04:12.entire block at one time, renting out flats. It is not known how long

:04:13. > :04:16.the investigation by the council will take. That depends whether they

:04:17. > :04:24.find any truth in the allegation and whether or not this single

:04:25. > :04:27.allegation leads to any others. A man arrested in connection with

:04:28. > :04:31.human trafficking in Bournemouth has been released on bail. Police raided

:04:32. > :04:35.a garage as part of an investigation into forced labour. Six men aged

:04:36. > :04:40.between 20 and 30 were taken to a safe house. Locals say the car wash

:04:41. > :04:44.was busy at all hours and recently men had started living in a caravan

:04:45. > :04:47.on the site. As we revealed yesterday, there was

:04:48. > :04:51.confirmation today of plans to extend Crossrail to Reading when it

:04:52. > :04:54.opens in five years. Two trains an hour into central London will bring

:04:55. > :04:58.thousands of extra rush hour seats into use on one of the country's

:04:59. > :05:02.most congested routes. But it'll take 50 minutes to get into the

:05:03. > :05:11.capital, twice as long as the fast service.

:05:12. > :05:16.I do not have to get out to change. Half of the journey is, is the

:05:17. > :05:20.connection going to be there? Standing on the platform wondering

:05:21. > :05:25.if the tube is delayed. I would prefer to have a relaxing journey.

:05:26. > :05:32.It will not make a difference as it is not going to be as fast. I go

:05:33. > :05:37.from Oxford to London which takes around 25 minutes, so I do not think

:05:38. > :05:41.it is going to be of any helpful is top.

:05:42. > :05:44.The editor of the Reading Chronicle has been suspended and an

:05:45. > :05:47.investigation launched by the newspaper's publishers after it ran

:05:48. > :05:50.a front page about hooliganism at the town's football club. Last week

:05:51. > :05:53.the newspaper upset Royals fans and the club chairman who called the

:05:54. > :05:56.article an "unwarranted attack". An apology was then made by the paper

:05:57. > :05:59.online. Today the newspaper apologised on its front page, saying

:06:00. > :06:07.Reading fans have a well deserved good reputation.

:06:08. > :06:10.Portsmouth Football Club have sacked manager Richie Barker. Pompey have

:06:11. > :06:14.won just four of 20 matches in which he's been in charge and face a fight

:06:15. > :06:17.to avoid relegation out of the football league. Andy Awford has

:06:18. > :06:20.been appointed caretaker manager and has seven games to turn their

:06:21. > :06:24.fortunes round. Ritchie was the wrong person in the wrong place at

:06:25. > :06:28.the wrong time. He didn't fit the Portsmouth mould. We had to act. It

:06:29. > :06:31.wasn't a case of more time. We don't want to be in the Football

:06:32. > :06:32.Conference next year. We want to be in the Football League.

:06:33. > :06:44.That's all from me for now. Most places will be frost free and

:06:45. > :06:51.any showers will tend is although we're expecting a few more into the

:06:52. > :07:01.south and areas west of the Isle of Wight where that could be thunder. A

:07:02. > :07:05.dry start for much of the region although showers will remain in

:07:06. > :07:09.place for the south`west, the Isle of Wight and western parts of

:07:10. > :07:18.Hampshire. One or two could drift inland. Some sunshine, but more

:07:19. > :07:23.cloud than son. As we head towards the weekend, temperatures are on the

:07:24. > :07:31.up. Possibly up to 18. The sunshine will be hazy and there will be a lot

:07:32. > :07:32.of cloud. The National weather is next.

:07:33. > :07:37.weather. Now the national forecast with Nick Miller.

:07:38. > :07:45.Hello, as winter becomes spring, the atmosphere contains more energy. The

:07:46. > :07:49.shower clouds grow taller. If conditions are right, you get

:07:50. > :07:54.thunder storms. There have been some today. Bob took this picture near

:07:55. > :07:59.London this afternoon. The spring flowers will appreciate the re turn

:08:00. > :08:05.return of warmth. Until then big showers to come, pushing in across

:08:06. > :08:06.south-west England - some hail and thunder. Sleet and
