:00:12. > :00:16.Good evening, I'm Jo Kent. Newbury is at the centre of a public

:00:17. > :00:20.health investigation after two people caught tuberculosis from

:00:21. > :00:24.their pet cats. They're the first ever recorded cases of cat`to`human

:00:25. > :00:27.transmission. The outbreak, which happened last year, saw 24 people

:00:28. > :00:31.screened who were linked to the same veterinary practice. Public Health

:00:32. > :00:39.England says the risk of transmission remains "very low".

:00:40. > :00:45.Nikki Mitchell reports. Alarm the alarm was first raised

:00:46. > :00:48.here at this Airdrie clinic. This cat is fit and healthy but every

:00:49. > :00:54.year ago someone brought in a cat with an abscess which would not

:00:55. > :00:59.heal. The vets became suspicious and took swabs. Nine cats tested

:01:00. > :01:04.positive in total, even the vet's and. Unfortunately my cat was on my

:01:05. > :01:08.lap one evening, I felt a lump on his leg, I was suspicious because we

:01:09. > :01:14.were in a bunch of cases, brought in and he turned out to have TB. What

:01:15. > :01:19.happened? We treated him, he was responding very well, we x`rayed his

:01:20. > :01:22.chest and all the lesions had cleared up, the lump had been

:01:23. > :01:27.removed, but while he was on treatment he went missing. As this

:01:28. > :01:32.is the first documented case of people catching bovine TB from cats,

:01:33. > :01:37.the testing has been rigorous. The results had to be checked,

:01:38. > :01:41.double`checked and checked again by scientists from various different

:01:42. > :01:45.organisations, and that is why we are only hearing about this now.

:01:46. > :01:50.More than a year after the first infected cat was brought in. The

:01:51. > :01:55.strain of the disease found in cats and people here was the same as the

:01:56. > :02:00.one found in an outbreak in cattle on nearby Greenham Common. There has

:02:01. > :02:04.been a veterinary investigation and certainly cattle in the area have

:02:05. > :02:10.been tested, and TB reactors were found among the cattle on the common

:02:11. > :02:19.land, and certainly at least one of them had TBD sees. `` disease. Some

:02:20. > :02:25.of this farm is cattle were slaughtered dobby suspects wildlife

:02:26. > :02:29.is responsible. It spreads through badges and deer, neither of them

:02:30. > :02:35.have got up predator any more so their numbers are increasing. It is

:02:36. > :02:40.spreading across the country, unless something is done. We don't want to

:02:41. > :02:44.panic people but we want them to be aware if they have a cat with a

:02:45. > :02:50.lesion, chronically ill, they should seek some help. People shouldn't be

:02:51. > :02:58.worried. TB is curable, best to get it early. It stops you passing it

:02:59. > :03:04.on. Symptoms can be a cough which lasts for several weeks, night

:03:05. > :03:08.sweats, loss of appetite. Officials are keen to stress there have been

:03:09. > :03:12.no new cases of bovine TB in pets or people for a year.

:03:13. > :03:15.Britain's only Green MP Caroline Lucas was in court today defending

:03:16. > :03:19.her decision to take part in anti`fracking protests in West

:03:20. > :03:21.Sussex. The Brighton Pavilion MP was arrested outside the Cuadrilla

:03:22. > :03:26.drilling site at Balcombe last August. She denies two public order

:03:27. > :03:34.offences telling magistrates her actions were "legitimate and

:03:35. > :03:38.appropriate". A new scheme in Hampshire is using

:03:39. > :03:41.education to try to cut crime. It is the first place in the country to

:03:42. > :03:45.offer some offenders the option of going on a course to change their

:03:46. > :03:49.behaviour, instead of going to court. . Our home affairs

:03:50. > :03:54.correspondent Emma Vardy has this exclusive report. I heard a bang on

:03:55. > :03:58.my back fence then another one. One night a stranger who had been

:03:59. > :04:03.drinking broke into Karen's back garden tearing down her fence. I was

:04:04. > :04:08.a bit scared, I didn't know if he had a weapon. The verbal abuse was

:04:09. > :04:11.quite disgusting. Police arrested the man. He could have been sent to

:04:12. > :04:16.appear in a magistrates court, or been punished with a fine. But

:04:17. > :04:22.officers told Karen he could instead be sent on the new victims awareness

:04:23. > :04:26.course. If you were robbed in a street in might be that you avoid

:04:27. > :04:29.going in that area again. Offenders are taken through scenarios

:04:30. > :04:34.involving price by criminal damage, theft or anti`social behaviour, and

:04:35. > :04:39.asked to discuss the impact they have an victims. Some of those on

:04:40. > :04:43.the course didn't want to be identified but it spoke to me

:04:44. > :04:46.afterwards. It was eye opening, you got to learn different things about

:04:47. > :04:51.how it affects others around you, people with you. At the moment

:04:52. > :04:54.Hampshire is the only place in the country to be putting offenders

:04:55. > :05:00.through its courses, but over the coming months they will be rolled

:05:01. > :05:03.out across other counties in the South as well. But there are

:05:04. > :05:07.warnings this new approach mustn't become abused. It is so important to

:05:08. > :05:12.look at who is this aimed at, for what time of offences, what is

:05:13. > :05:15.appropriate, identifying very clearly the criteria as to who

:05:16. > :05:20.should be offered this programme, what the circumstances should be,

:05:21. > :05:26.and to keep to that to ensure it doesn't just become an easy option.

:05:27. > :05:31.Using education over punishment for those we spoke to has considerable

:05:32. > :05:36.public support. Forward`looking, it moves away from the kind of state we

:05:37. > :05:42.were moving back towards this country, I like it.

:05:43. > :05:48.Give them a bit of direction, I suppose. If you are right to punish

:05:49. > :05:51.someone, I guess they are not learning anything, you are not

:05:52. > :05:57.getting to the root of the problem whereas if you educate somebody they

:05:58. > :06:01.are. When you come home and you have got a massive black eye, facial

:06:02. > :06:06.injuries, how will your children react? Authorities will be watching

:06:07. > :06:12.to see how successful the approach at educating offenders about their

:06:13. > :06:15.effect on victims proves to be. Osborne House on the Isle of Wight

:06:16. > :06:19.welcomed royalty once again today. Prince Edward and the Countess of

:06:20. > :06:22.Wessex visited to take a tour of the Swiss Cottage in the grounds which

:06:23. > :06:25.has just been restored by English Heritage. The cottage was built by

:06:26. > :06:29.Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert for their children to

:06:30. > :06:32.play in. The exhibition inside tells the story of their childhoods and

:06:33. > :06:39.the adventures they enjoyed when staying at Osborne House.

:06:40. > :06:44.That is all from us, more on the website.

:06:45. > :06:51.Good evening. After all the showers and the cold of the last couple of

:06:52. > :06:56.days it gets warmer this weekend. The sunshine comes out, at last.

:06:57. > :07:02.Spring arriving. Much warmer, some hazy sunshine to enjoy. We could see

:07:03. > :07:05.Tim because of 270 degrees. A few showers tonight, brushing up the

:07:06. > :07:14.western side. They will gradually move away towards the West Country.

:07:15. > :07:17.Briefly the showers in the morning gone by lunchtime, into the

:07:18. > :07:25.afternoon. It is sunshine and very pleasant. A bit cold on the coast,

:07:26. > :07:31.the breeze will make it feel colder. Similar conditions as we

:07:32. > :07:33.move into Sunday with 17 degrees. We will have a

:07:34. > :07:39.forward on Saturday night. Now here is Nick Miller with the national

:07:40. > :07:45.forecast. Hello. The clocks go forward this

:07:46. > :07:49.weekend, marking the beginning of British summertime, BST. It has

:07:50. > :07:53.nothing to do with the weather. As the clocks changed last year we were

:07:54. > :08:00.coming out of the March freeze. This year, though, as the clucks

:08:01. > :08:05.change, the weather is warming up. Not clear blue sky, the sun will be

:08:06. > :08:11.hazy but the thunder storms will be gone. It will be mainly dry.

:08:12. > :08:14.And the weather is lively out there this evening. There are bands of

:08:15. > :08:18.rain with hail over western parts of the UK.

:08:19. > :08:23.A bit of rain for parts of the north of England and south-west of

:08:24. > :08:27.Scotland. And lots of hill fog into the Pennines. Mist and fog in the

:08:28. > :08:36.central and eastern areas of England. It is a slow start in the

:08:37. > :08:37.morning. A lot of cloud around first thing. Misty in places. Damp on
