:00:00. > :00:09.A year after Southampton's Ford Transit factory closed down,

:00:10. > :00:22.Was It is a good building, it is suitable for use, so why not use it?

:00:23. > :00:25.Claims he was made a scapegoat ` the council officer who says he was

:00:26. > :00:27.wrongly sacked following a costly car park blunder.

:00:28. > :00:30.The teams warm up for a sizzling test match

:00:31. > :00:37.at Hampshire's Ageas Bowl but some are looking further into the future

:00:38. > :00:44.I don't want to be saddled with the reputation of being the only England

:00:45. > :00:48.Test match crowd that has not been awarded an Ashes Test match.

:00:49. > :00:53.70 years ago today holiday makers celebrate the end of the ban

:00:54. > :01:03.For a year it's stood empty ` but South Today has been told that

:01:04. > :01:05.a decision on the future of the old Ford Transit factory

:01:06. > :01:10.at Swaythling near Southampton could be made by the end of this year.

:01:11. > :01:13.It's 12 months since the 60`acre site shut after 41

:01:14. > :01:20.The latest economic figures show that the UK economy grew 0.8%

:01:21. > :01:25.in the second quarter and has now recovered the ground

:01:26. > :01:31.Our reporter Lewis Coombes has been looking at what's next

:01:32. > :01:37.Ford has a long association with Southampton.

:01:38. > :01:46.Ford parts were manufactured here from 1953.

:01:47. > :01:50.The Ford transit has been built in the city since 1972. The 1,000,000th

:01:51. > :01:53.van was ill soon after. The city was dubbed "the home

:01:54. > :01:56.of the Transit" with the van having The plant once employed thousands

:01:57. > :02:00.of workers, but in February 2009 Ford announced the workforce was to

:02:01. > :02:03.be halved, from 1,000 to 500 with In October 2012 it was announced

:02:04. > :02:07.that the factory would close, with Ford say that all employees either

:02:08. > :02:11.chose redeployment within the company, voluntary redundancy

:02:12. > :02:16.or early retirement. The company is also investing ?12

:02:17. > :02:18.million in a Vehicle Distribution Centre

:02:19. > :02:20.at Southampton docks and a Vehicle Refurbishment Centre on the plant

:02:21. > :02:24.site, employing 134 former workers. But for the last year

:02:25. > :02:35.the factory has laid empty. I have been finding out what is next

:02:36. > :02:36.for the site that has played such an important role in the history of

:02:37. > :02:38.Southampton. From bustling production line to

:02:39. > :02:40.abandoned industrial building. A year has passed,

:02:41. > :02:42.but the future of Ford's site Over a year now and they

:02:43. > :02:50.have done nothing about it. I mean, the youngsters in there, 35,

:02:51. > :02:55.40 years old, It is a good building, it is there

:02:56. > :03:02.and it is suitable for use so why not use it and use it for what it

:03:03. > :03:09.was originally designed for? I think given the complexity

:03:10. > :03:12.of the site and the numbers of players involved,

:03:13. > :03:14.things are going very well. It is an important site,

:03:15. > :03:16.an important strategic site for the city

:03:17. > :03:18.and we need to get things right. Talks have been ongoing,

:03:19. > :03:20.but ownership Ford is responsible for 40%

:03:21. > :03:25.of the land. And a further 40% is owned

:03:26. > :03:32.by a development company. For progress to be made,

:03:33. > :03:35.they all need to agree. One option is

:03:36. > :03:37.for another large company to come Slightly concerned because

:03:38. > :03:42.if that employer goes bust, I would like to see more than one

:03:43. > :03:48.employer, not necessarily 100 Ultimately, the gates being closed

:03:49. > :03:52.has also had a knock`on effect We are hoping they will do

:03:53. > :03:56.something useful with the site. And if a new business comes in,

:03:57. > :04:00.hopefully we will become busier, The site generates hundreds

:04:01. > :04:08.of thousands of pounds in business rates for the council, so it's in

:04:09. > :04:12.their interest to find new tenants. But with real estate prices

:04:13. > :04:15.on the up, perhaps it's been in Ford's interest to hold

:04:16. > :04:19.on to the land a little longer. I think the market is going to firm

:04:20. > :04:22.over the next couple of months. There is good reason to think

:04:23. > :04:25.the economy is going to be strong, more jobs created, so the likelihood

:04:26. > :04:28.is the market will be stronger, rents will be higher and the price

:04:29. > :04:33.of lands will be higher as well. Ford's eventual departure

:04:34. > :04:35.didn't come as a surprise. Critics say the council should have

:04:36. > :04:38.started work a lot sooner We have known for a good amount

:04:39. > :04:44.of time before last year that the plant was going to close

:04:45. > :04:47.so they could have got their ducks Ford employees and contractors

:04:48. > :04:53.continue to decommission the plant. And an announcement on the future

:04:54. > :04:56.of the site is expected It's likely to be home to another

:04:57. > :05:00.business, rather than used But

:05:01. > :05:05.for now it's very much the former Lewis Coombes, BBC South Today,

:05:06. > :05:12.Swaythling. Police have described it as

:05:13. > :05:15."one of the most disturbing cases in This afternoon Ben Blakeley,

:05:16. > :05:18.the man found guilty of murdering Jayden Parkinson,

:05:19. > :05:22.has been given a life sentence. He's been told he'll spend

:05:23. > :05:25.at least 20 years in prison. Blakeley killed Jayden ` who was

:05:26. > :05:28.pregnant ` last December, and buried Today, a jury failed to reach

:05:29. > :05:34.a verdict on Ben's younger brother Jake, who faced a charge

:05:35. > :05:49.of unlawfully burying a body. We will never be able to find an

:05:50. > :05:58.answer for the evil that claimed Jade's life. We will never be able

:05:59. > :06:02.to find forgiveness for the evil that murdered Jade and concealed her

:06:03. > :06:06.body in such a cold and calculating and callous manner and we will never

:06:07. > :06:11.get to see Jayden Parkinson grew up, get married and have children.

:06:12. > :06:13.This is our life sentence. It is time for Ben Blakeley to start his.

:06:14. > :06:16.Thank you. A haul of jewellery

:06:17. > :06:18.and two pistols were found among scores of items uncovered at

:06:19. > :06:22.the bottom of a pond near Worthing. Specialist police search teams were

:06:23. > :06:24.called to Whitebeam Wood in Durrington

:06:25. > :06:26.after a dog pulled out a jacket Sussex Police say

:06:27. > :06:31.the items may have been stolen A coroner is writing to prosecutors

:06:32. > :06:37.regarding the way they look It follows the death of

:06:38. > :06:43.Frances Andrade, who took an overdose soon after

:06:44. > :06:46.testifying against a music teacher He was convicted and jailed

:06:47. > :06:52.but she didn't live to see that. She died after hearing some

:06:53. > :06:55.of the charges had been dismissed. It took a lot for Francis Andrade to

:06:56. > :07:02.confront the demons of her past. In the end,

:07:03. > :07:05.it all proved too much for her. She killed herself a few days

:07:06. > :07:09.after testifying against a music teacher who had

:07:10. > :07:12.sexually abused her as a child. It happened while she was a pupil

:07:13. > :07:14.at Chetham's School of Music The teacher was eventually convicted

:07:15. > :07:21.and jailed by a court in Manchester. But Francis Andrade didn't

:07:22. > :07:25.live to see that day. Partway through his trial,

:07:26. > :07:27.the judge instructed the jury to acquit him on some charges due to

:07:28. > :07:32.a legal technicality. After reading about this,

:07:33. > :07:34.Francis Andrade took So does her husband regret her

:07:35. > :07:40.becoming involved in the trial? I can't say that because

:07:41. > :07:44.for one reason she needed to Of course she never did actually

:07:45. > :07:53.ask to be involved in any of this. It was a friend who

:07:54. > :07:58.originally told the police. Mr Andrade had told an inquest in

:07:59. > :08:02.Surrey that his wife spiralled into She had taken a number

:08:03. > :08:10.of drugs overdoses. The coroner Richard Travis said he

:08:11. > :08:13.was satisfied that Miss Andrade had died as a result

:08:14. > :08:15.of taking a drugs overdose. However, he could not be satisfied

:08:16. > :08:18.that she had intended to kill herself and so he did not record

:08:19. > :08:20.a verdict of suicide. He said that he would be writing to

:08:21. > :08:23.the director of public prosecutions regarding the

:08:24. > :08:27.advice given to vulnerable witnesses and the way they are kept involved

:08:28. > :08:36.in the progress of those trials. An industrial tribunal has been

:08:37. > :08:38.hearing about a mistake in the wording of a business

:08:39. > :08:41.contract which led to Worthing Borough Council paying hundreds

:08:42. > :08:43.of thousands of pounds compensation The council sacked the senior

:08:44. > :08:50.officer it held responsible. But he believes he was made

:08:51. > :08:53.a scapegoat and is claiming unfair dismissal

:08:54. > :08:56.at a hearing in Southampton. This dispute centres on a ten`year

:08:57. > :09:02.contract Worthing Borough Council had with the NCP to run the town's

:09:03. > :09:08.multistorey car parks on their behalf. In 2009, following

:09:09. > :09:11.complaints from motorists, the council wanted to reduce the parking

:09:12. > :09:15.charges. They negotiated a change in the contract and agreed to

:09:16. > :09:19.compensate NCP for some of the lost revenue. The council officer in

:09:20. > :09:24.charge was executive head of technical services Cliff Harrison,

:09:25. > :09:26.seen here in the glasses. Last November he was sacked by the

:09:27. > :09:30.council for gross misconduct. The council leader said in a statement

:09:31. > :09:33.that councillors had instructed officers to limit the compensation

:09:34. > :09:40.liability to a maximum of ?152,000 but he said in fact compensation was

:09:41. > :09:44.left open`ended. As a result, the council faced potentially having to

:09:45. > :09:50.pay NCP ?1.5 million. In March this year, the council reached an

:09:51. > :09:53.out`of`court settlement with NCP which was kept secret. Papers

:09:54. > :09:57.submitted to the tribunal referred to a figure of ?740,000 being sought

:09:58. > :10:03.by NCP at the High Court, but they don't confirm if that was the final

:10:04. > :10:07.settlement. At today's hearing, Mr Harrison's lawyer suggested he was

:10:08. > :10:11.being made a scapegoat. The council denied that. Mr Harrison's case is

:10:12. > :10:15.that other senior officers and lawyers were involved in drawing up

:10:16. > :10:18.a contract amendment and he believes there were serious flaws in the

:10:19. > :10:20.disciplinary process. He is claiming unfair dismissal but the hearing was

:10:21. > :10:32.adjourned to October 3. Sussex Police says it will review

:10:33. > :10:34.any new information about a fatal crash involving

:10:35. > :10:37.a serving officer who has been Stewart Chalmers' car struck

:10:38. > :10:41.and killed Luke Bland and injured his friend

:10:42. > :10:45.Ben Blackfield five years ago. The off duty officer was found not

:10:46. > :11:01.guilty of causing death It was a jury that acquitted Stewart

:11:02. > :11:06.Chalmers, a traffic officer, of causing death by dangerous driving.

:11:07. > :11:11.One night in February 2009 when he was off`duty, his car killed Luke

:11:12. > :11:14.Bland. Look's friend then black field was injured. An MP to the

:11:15. > :11:19.Commons this week the not guilty verdict was a terrible miscarriage

:11:20. > :11:22.of justice. If it had been established that far from being the

:11:23. > :11:26.responsible driver he claimed Stewart Chalmers drove his car a

:11:27. > :11:29.legally in a knot roadworthy condition and did not bother to

:11:30. > :11:34.check the legality of his tyres even when warned they were close to the

:11:35. > :11:37.limit, the main line of his defence would have fallen apart. The Commons

:11:38. > :11:40.heard that after the trial the families of the young men did

:11:41. > :11:45.research into the officer's car for a civil action. In Parliament Esther

:11:46. > :11:52.Hendry said four months before the crash PC charmers' are field its MOT

:11:53. > :11:56.because a front tyre was not legal. It was her at the car was taken away

:11:57. > :12:01.and driven off and had 55 miles without a valid MOT and insurance

:12:02. > :12:06.before the front tyre what replaced. Mr Hendry said it eventually passed

:12:07. > :12:10.it's MOT but with an advisory notice that the rear tyres were close to

:12:11. > :12:14.the legal threshold and at the time of the college and those tyres were

:12:15. > :12:17.below their legal limit. The Commons her Sussex Police accept they should

:12:18. > :12:22.have done things differently in the case and the Chief Constable has met

:12:23. > :12:26.families. He has given a personal apology to the family and an

:12:27. > :12:30.assurance that we will review any new information that comes to light

:12:31. > :12:34.as a result of the civil proceedings. Families look and then

:12:35. > :12:42.welcome any future reviewed by the police. `` families of Luke Bland

:12:43. > :12:45.and Ben Blackfield. I hope they will look at the evidence and make

:12:46. > :12:55.inquiries about what actions can be taken. Stewart Chalmers still

:12:56. > :12:58.certain Sussex as a Sergeant. A police watchdog found that although

:12:59. > :13:03.some of the complaints were well founded, there was no misconduct on

:13:04. > :13:05.the part of the officer. The chase was investigated thoroughly by

:13:06. > :13:10.Sussex Police, it would appear the case was treated with at least as

:13:11. > :13:14.much integrity as any other member of the public who would have been at

:13:15. > :13:18.the wheel. The Police Federation which represented Esther charmers

:13:19. > :13:23.stressed the officer had been found not guilty of any offence, there was

:13:24. > :13:31.no breach of professional standards, the investigation had been properly

:13:32. > :13:37.conducted. `` Mr charmers. `` Mr Stewart Chalmers.

:13:38. > :13:39.The bus company which runs Salisbury's Park and Ride service

:13:40. > :13:43.89 members of staff are losing their jobs at Hatts Coaches,

:13:44. > :13:47.Wiltshire Council says it's engaged another firm to run the park

:13:48. > :13:50.Hatts' daily bus services in and around Salisbury have been taken

:13:51. > :13:56.It is easy to say it has run out of cash but that is the problem. We

:13:57. > :13:58.first got involved one week ago today and have been working hard to

:13:59. > :14:03.see if there was a solution. Unfortunately, there was not. It was

:14:04. > :14:09.too late in the day and it has left us with no option other than to

:14:10. > :14:11.close the business. Still to come, if you are wondering what to do this

:14:12. > :14:16.weekend, we have the weather forecast. One more day to enjoy the

:14:17. > :14:18.sunshine and then a bit of respite on the way. The full forecast coming

:14:19. > :14:22.up later in the programme. A three`year`old boy from Sussex is

:14:23. > :14:25.recovering after taking his family's car for a ride ` ending up in a pub

:14:26. > :14:42.garden. The boy started up the The boy started up the engine to the

:14:43. > :14:45.automatic Subaru in the family's He then drove

:14:46. > :14:49.down two embankments into the garden Police say the youngster escaped

:14:50. > :14:57.with just a slight bump to his head. Time for the sport. There is a Test

:14:58. > :15:02.match any minute. It is very exciting.

:15:03. > :15:09.I am excited, I am going on Monday. I hope they can play a bit better.

:15:10. > :15:11.Some of that in a moment. First, some news.

:15:12. > :15:14.We understand a deal has been agreed with Liverpool for Southampton

:15:15. > :15:17.He'll undergo a medical over the weekend after the clubs reached

:15:18. > :15:22.The Croatian ` who made no secret of wanting to leave ` will join

:15:23. > :15:25.former teammates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana at Anfield.

:15:26. > :15:33.There was another medal for the South at the Commonwealth

:15:34. > :15:36.Games in Glasgow today ` this time a bronze in the shooting.

:15:37. > :15:38.It adds to a swimming bronze last night.

:15:39. > :15:40.And there could be more success before the day is out,

:15:41. > :15:43.with athletes from our region in finals in judo and swimming.

:15:44. > :16:03.Daniel Rivers from England has got a new Commonwealth Games record in

:16:04. > :16:05.qualifying. Didcot's Dan Rivers was the man to

:16:06. > :16:08.beat after storming qualifying But the final went

:16:09. > :16:12.down to the wire ` he claimed bronze A shoot off was the undoing of

:16:13. > :16:20.hotly`tipped teenager Amber Hill. She just missed out on reaching the

:16:21. > :16:22.final. An injury meant Wokingham's

:16:23. > :16:24.Megan Fletcher had to have her face taped up midway through her

:16:25. > :16:27.under 70kg judo semi`final. It could have easily thrown her `

:16:28. > :16:31.but instead she won with this throw. And Danny Williams,

:16:32. > :16:33.also from Wokingham, Both go for gold

:16:34. > :16:40.in the next half hour. There are two medal chances

:16:41. > :16:42.for Reading's Adam Barratt tonight. He booked his place in the freestyle

:16:43. > :16:45.relay final this morning. And Andrew Willis `

:16:46. > :16:49.who won bronze last night ` is through to the semi`finals

:16:50. > :16:53.of the 100m breaststroke. England's netballers `

:16:54. > :16:55.featuring four players from the south ` showed why they're one

:16:56. > :17:01.of the favourites for Commonwealth gold with a 65`25 win against Wales

:17:02. > :17:13.in their first group match. My mother and brother drove up from

:17:14. > :17:17.Burnham. It is great. The Scottish crowd have got right behind us so we

:17:18. > :17:21.are appreciative of the netball fans coming to watch us. And even people

:17:22. > :17:24.who have not watched netball before. `` Bournemouth.

:17:25. > :17:26.But hopes for a golden day in the velodrome for

:17:27. > :17:28.Hamble's Dani King were crushed when the Olympic gold medallist

:17:29. > :17:32.didn't qualify for the final of the 3,000m individual pursuit.

:17:33. > :17:38.Danny Williams from the judo has won gold in the under 73 kilograms.

:17:39. > :17:40.Fantastic news. More on that in the late news tonight.

:17:41. > :17:42.Cricket, and Hampshire's Ageas Bowl is gearing up to host

:17:43. > :17:44.the test match this weekend between England and India.

:17:45. > :17:47.It'll be only the second test the venue has hosted.

:17:48. > :17:55.The Ageas Bowl held its maiden test match in 2011, a rain`soaked draw

:17:56. > :18:00.Now the ground will be hosting its second test, when India visit

:18:01. > :18:03.Hampshire for Sunday's third match against England.

:18:04. > :18:07.India looked relaxed in training for Sunday's third test.

:18:08. > :18:08.Hardly surprising as they're one match up

:18:09. > :18:13.England's Test debutant Jos Buttler will replace Sussex's Matt Prior

:18:14. > :18:23.He has good memories of the Ageas Bowl.

:18:24. > :18:30.My first 100 was here, we had some exciting 2020 finals day in Somerset

:18:31. > :18:34.as well so I enjoyed the ground, I like the place and it will be a

:18:35. > :18:36.place that holds some special memories come Sunday morning.

:18:37. > :18:40.But he joins a squad struggling for consistent form with bat or ball

:18:41. > :18:48.They are hurting and disappointed that they are not playing their

:18:49. > :18:52.brand of cricket and getting the results they wanted but there is the

:18:53. > :18:53.underlying determination from everyone to turn that around and put

:18:54. > :18:55.results right. What could make

:18:56. > :18:58.a real difference to the result is the wicket, it's reportedly looking

:18:59. > :19:00.to be in better condition than the first two matches, so we could

:19:01. > :19:07.see some really exciting cricket. Hampshire's chairman hopes

:19:08. > :19:09.the quality of that wicket and a successful test match could be

:19:10. > :19:12.the beginning of even bigger things I would still want to stage an Ashes

:19:13. > :19:23.Test match, I saddled with the reputation of being

:19:24. > :19:28.the only England Test match ground that has never been awarded an Ashes

:19:29. > :19:33.Test match. We must put our best foot forward and put a strong case.

:19:34. > :19:35.Unusually this Test starts on a Sunday.

:19:36. > :19:38.Can England deliver ` and can a new venue deliver a classic contest?

:19:39. > :19:43.Portsmouth's young boxing star Ebonie Jones has made it through

:19:44. > :19:46.to the final of the European Women's Junior Championships.

:19:47. > :19:48.Ebonie, who's 15 and here in the blue, trains at the Heart

:19:49. > :19:53.She beat Italian Lucy Garafalo on home turf at the competition

:19:54. > :19:56.in Assisi with a unanimous points decision.
