:00:00. > :00:10.Flash floods hit the South ` homes and businesses feel

:00:11. > :00:23.It was a disaster. I have never seen something like that before. Never.

:00:24. > :00:26.On the move ` the NHS staff caught in an internal

:00:27. > :00:31.Stay safe in the sea ` the campaign to help youngsters swim

:00:32. > :00:36.And from self`confessed couch potato to marathon man,

:00:37. > :00:44.we meet the Commonwealth runner who's put the past behind him.

:00:45. > :00:54.Tired, still absolutely in a state of euphoria. It is a weird mixture

:00:55. > :01:04.of all three, I think. Torrential rain

:01:05. > :01:05.and hailstorms caused disruption for thousands of people across

:01:06. > :01:08.Sussex and Surrey this morning. Homes and businesses were flooded,

:01:09. > :01:14.while some commuters were trapped on a platform

:01:15. > :01:16.at Worthing railway station, when Our reporter Sean Killick has spent

:01:17. > :01:31.the day there, Many people around here today awoke

:01:32. > :01:34.to thunderstorms, hailstones and rain as homes and businesses were

:01:35. > :01:40.flooded and there was no getting away from it. Flights to and from

:01:41. > :01:45.Gatwick were delayed, roads turned into rivers and this was a scene

:01:46. > :01:49.that greeted some commuters. At Worthing railway station, the

:01:50. > :01:55.rush`hour turned into the Gush are. For one hour, a whole month's rain

:01:56. > :01:59.fell. Under past looked like a flooded underground. The fire

:02:00. > :02:04.brigade fought a losing battle trying to pump it out. The station

:02:05. > :02:09.was closed, some passengers were stranded on the platform and rail

:02:10. > :02:15.services in the area where severely disrupted. It is going to take very

:02:16. > :02:22.long to get to work. When I get away from here I will be happy. Good luck

:02:23. > :02:25.to everyone who is travelling. Not everyone he did that advice. Some

:02:26. > :02:32.were determined to get to work, hell or high water. Near West Worthing

:02:33. > :02:38.station, this was the scene at breakfast time in Emma's kitchen. It

:02:39. > :02:46.gradually built up as the back of the property. It came in pretty

:02:47. > :02:52.rapidly. Nearby, this cafe was flooded from the front door to that.

:02:53. > :02:56.And going to change the floor over there. And I am going to change the

:02:57. > :03:03.bridge because it does not work any more. How long will you be out of

:03:04. > :03:09.business for? I don't know, four or five days. A car hire company said

:03:10. > :03:17.this was the worst flood in the company's history. The drains are

:03:18. > :03:20.never cleaned as they used to be. There when so many cars around and

:03:21. > :03:24.they used to clean the drains every month. White back the County Council

:03:25. > :03:33.says Gulley chambers are maintained by a specialist contractor but waits

:03:34. > :03:37.blade flooding over well the system. Iraq station, no eastbound

:03:38. > :03:43.trains have stopped all day. There was fourth at water in the under

:03:44. > :03:45.past, and now a large pumping vehicle is trying to clear it out.

:03:46. > :03:49.`` West Worthing station. There is no word on when services will return

:03:50. > :03:50.to normal. An NHS Trust is moving 200 staff

:03:51. > :03:52.and many patient services out The trust has been told it may owe

:03:53. > :04:00.to ?5 million for rent at St James Hospital ` and other

:04:01. > :04:05.premises around Hampshire. Solent NHS is now looking at how it

:04:06. > :04:08.can resolve its financial problems. Our Health Correspondent David

:04:09. > :04:22.Fenton is with me. The staff and some of the patients

:04:23. > :04:26.were always going to move out of St James 's Hospital.

:04:27. > :04:38.They need to save money quickly. There is a dispute over ?5 million

:04:39. > :04:42.in rent for St James and other premises which may or may not be

:04:43. > :04:44.ordered to the owners of the hospital they just happen to be

:04:45. > :04:46.another part of the NHS. Talks are going on

:04:47. > :04:48.at the moment about this, Where's it going to

:04:49. > :04:52.find ?5 million from? It is going to ask the government

:04:53. > :05:07.for a ?5 million loan. They are going to see what happens

:05:08. > :05:08.with these negotiations over the rent.

:05:09. > :05:11.The big issue here is that the Trust which runs community services

:05:12. > :05:19.around Hampshire needs to find big savings, they are ?3 million

:05:20. > :05:22.behind with those plans and if it does nothing it will be ?15

:05:23. > :05:35.Most won't be going to St James Hospital

:05:36. > :05:43.They will be going to a new health campus at St Mary'sthey will be seen

:05:44. > :05:46.there. Although mental health services

:05:47. > :05:50.will still be on site. In fact, they have already

:05:51. > :05:52.started doing that. And what we will see is large parts

:05:53. > :05:56.of the old hospital eventually being emptied and sold off for housing,

:05:57. > :06:04.which is what the landlords, This is NHS property who owned the

:06:05. > :06:07.site. They have said that it is not the case that these workers are

:06:08. > :06:12.having to move out because of rent issues. Really what they are

:06:13. > :06:16.concentrating on is basically paying money for patient services, not for

:06:17. > :06:19.old buildings, which is really where they are coming from. Thank you.

:06:20. > :06:21.Baseball bats, stones and a car were believed to

:06:22. > :06:24.have been used as weapons during a mass brawl involving around

:06:25. > :06:27.At least seven people were arrested and a number

:06:28. > :06:30.of others were taken to hospital following the fight in Crawley.

:06:31. > :06:32.Officers received more than 20 calls about the disorder,

:06:33. > :06:36.which is believed to have erupted between two rival factions.

:06:37. > :06:46.A small parade of shops, a new community centre and Bewbush Park.

:06:47. > :06:49.But by last night, this children's play area was

:06:50. > :06:53.the scene of a vicious fight between rival groups of teenagers.

:06:54. > :06:55.By the time officers arrived they found

:06:56. > :06:59.50 people engaged in a huge brawl here, some were apparently using

:07:00. > :07:02.weapons, somebody had been hit by a car and the fighting spilled over

:07:03. > :07:07.beyond the children's playground to the community centre and the shops.

:07:08. > :07:11.By the time it was over, police had swamped the area with officers,

:07:12. > :07:18.My nine`year`old and 12`year`old and my nine`year`old's friend were

:07:19. > :07:23.And then they all started kicking the do`do out of each other.

:07:24. > :07:32.There was police cars in the shop round the back

:07:33. > :07:39.All up to the new housing estate and down the roundabout.

:07:40. > :07:50.Police say no one was that last night and the fight was not linked

:07:51. > :07:53.to a stabbing earlier in the week but they were

:07:54. > :07:56.of tensions in the area and are working to keep the community calm.

:07:57. > :07:59.Trying to work out what has actually led to this event playing out as it

:08:00. > :08:02.did last night so we can resolve it and reduce those tensions.

:08:03. > :08:06.It is not nice to see dozens and dozens of youths in the street

:08:07. > :08:11.All we can do is pledge we will work incredibly hard to make sure that

:08:12. > :08:12.these kind of incidents don't happen.

:08:13. > :08:14.This afternoon, the playground was being used as it

:08:15. > :08:17.was intended, and the police have increased the number of patrols

:08:18. > :08:29.A nine`year`old boy had to receive hospital treatment at the weekend,

:08:30. > :08:31.after being cut by a metal disposable barbecue.

:08:32. > :08:33.It had been left buried in the beach at Southsea.

:08:34. > :08:37.His parents have called for beachside barbecuers to dispose

:08:38. > :08:50.of their rubbish safely, as Katy Austin reports.

:08:51. > :08:56.I was walking down the beach with two body boards in my hand and I

:08:57. > :09:03.walked into a disposable barbecue like this one. I scraped my fit and

:09:04. > :09:08.I had to go to hospital. It was a wide gash down his ankle. You could

:09:09. > :09:10.see through to where the tendons were. We had to take him to the

:09:11. > :09:17.hospital. The BBQ that injured

:09:18. > :09:20.James was hidden by stones like this one, that we found abandoned

:09:21. > :09:22.near to where he was hurt. The deputy leader of

:09:23. > :09:24.Portsmouth City Council also runs He says people burying

:09:25. > :09:32.barbecues is a real problem. It has been an accident waiting to

:09:33. > :09:36.happen. No one fortunately it has. What should people do with

:09:37. > :09:41.barbecues? In some areas we have metal dustbins. They should be put

:09:42. > :09:46.in those. And there are other areas with plastic dustbins and they have

:09:47. > :09:51.to take them home with them. What kind of punishments are there for

:09:52. > :09:53.people who are caught? We will have to look at options. That won't

:09:54. > :09:57.happen immediately. But while the council looks

:09:58. > :10:00.into ways to punish people who leave dangerous objects on beaches,

:10:01. > :10:02.James' mum has one message. Still to come

:10:03. > :10:11.in this evening's South Today, The Hampshire artist

:10:12. > :10:19.who's thinking small. The government has said that

:10:20. > :10:22.fracking will only be allowed in National Parks

:10:23. > :10:23."in exceptional circumstances". An application to drill for oil

:10:24. > :10:26.and gas in the South Downs National Park at Fernhurst has already been

:10:27. > :10:31.submitted by Celtique Energy. Today the government launched a new

:10:32. > :10:33.bidding round for fracking licences. But it said drilling sites

:10:34. > :10:36.near to beauty spots will be subject The storms we suffered last winter

:10:37. > :10:45.left some of the rail network Six months on,

:10:46. > :10:49.engineers are still repairing Trains damaged in the worst weather

:10:50. > :10:57.for 200 years are still not Here's our transport

:10:58. > :11:00.correspondent Paul Clifton. On December 23rd,

:11:01. > :11:04.this South West Trains cab struck The driver was lucky to

:11:05. > :11:09.escape serious injury. The aluminium frame damaged

:11:10. > :11:29.so badly that much of the cab has to Obviously the train has crashed. The

:11:30. > :11:33.cab has been completely stripped out and a new cap has been put in again.

:11:34. > :11:38.It has not been done like this for a long time. It is a lot of trouble

:11:39. > :11:42.and a lot of time and effort. So it is quite a bit of work.

:11:43. > :11:45.The front of a train is like the crumple zone on a car, designed

:11:46. > :11:48.to fold up in a crash to absorb the energy, protecting people behind it.

:11:49. > :11:51.Specialists had to be brought in from Germany to help with repairs.

:11:52. > :12:05.Sometimes when trains like this do get damaged, it can be out of

:12:06. > :12:08.service. We have actually have to that time.

:12:09. > :12:11.The repair is being done in the old Eastleigh works.

:12:12. > :12:12.Once, 5,000 people were employed here.

:12:13. > :12:15.It officially closed eight years ago but since then a string of

:12:16. > :12:28.Today, well over 100 people work here.

:12:29. > :12:34.This train will go back to work in August, eight months after it hit a

:12:35. > :12:38.fallen tree. The cost is hundreds of thousands of pounds.

:12:39. > :12:41.An air`sea rescue operation had to be launched off the coast of

:12:42. > :12:44.West Sussex at the weekend after a woman was swept out to sea.

:12:45. > :12:46.She had apparently gone for a late night swim

:12:47. > :12:49.The Solent coastguard helicopter used its searchlight to find

:12:50. > :12:53.She was brought ashore just before two o'clock on Sunday morning

:12:54. > :12:56.by one of the two Littlehampton inshore lifeboats which were used

:12:57. > :13:01.After being given first aid, the exhausted woman was taken to

:13:02. > :13:12.Well, just along the coast in Dorset, a campaign has been launched

:13:13. > :13:15.to improve the safety of youngsters who go swimming in the sea.

:13:16. > :13:18.It comes after an increase in the number of people under 20 years of

:13:19. > :13:23.The campaign is called Swim Safe and youngsters are being offered free

:13:24. > :13:33.On a glorious sunny day at the seaside there is nothing better

:13:34. > :13:39.But these youngsters have also been learning some important lessons

:13:40. > :13:42.about the big differences between swimming in the pool

:13:43. > :13:49.Heidi and Kelly, two mums from Winchester,

:13:50. > :13:52.signed their children up for the Swim Safe course at Boscombe Beach.

:13:53. > :14:00.Obviously every parent needs to keep a close eye on them.

:14:01. > :14:05.But to give them a bit of extra help, really.

:14:06. > :14:09.I do a lot of swimming anyway but I haven't really swum in the sea much.

:14:10. > :14:14.My daughter goes out, I worry about currents underneath pulling her out.

:14:15. > :14:16.Because that has happened to me before.

:14:17. > :14:22.The Swim Safe campaign is being run by the Amateur Swimming Association

:14:23. > :14:32.It has the backing of an Olympic silver medallist who specialises

:14:33. > :14:37.We don't want to stop people from swimming, we want to get more

:14:38. > :14:39.people swimming but we want to make sure they are educated

:14:40. > :14:44.The latest national figures show that when it comes to the safety

:14:45. > :14:47.of youngsters in the water, there is no room for completion say.

:14:48. > :14:54.Last year, 46 youngsters under the age of 20 were drowned in the UK.

:14:55. > :14:58.That is an increase of four on the previous year.

:14:59. > :15:01.A survey also indicated that one in five youngsters had been involved

:15:02. > :15:05.in what are described as drowning near misses.

:15:06. > :15:09.The research also indicated that up to a fifth of parents allow children

:15:10. > :15:15.They are quite comfortable with their children paddling

:15:16. > :15:21.in knee`high water or waist`high water but it only takes one big wave

:15:22. > :15:24.or a slip off the shelf and the child could be in trouble.

:15:25. > :15:31.And make sure you have always got a parent watching you.

:15:32. > :15:35.The free Swim Safe lessons for youngsters aged

:15:36. > :15:38.from 7 to 14 continue at Boscombe Beach until August 28.

:15:39. > :15:51.Participants must be able to swim at least 25 metres.

:15:52. > :15:57.That is a worthy campaign and a good campaign. Get inspired as the motto

:15:58. > :16:02.of the Commonwealth Games and one man has taken it to heart.

:16:03. > :16:04.I thought my days as an Olympic athlete were over but maybe not. I

:16:05. > :16:06.have been given a lot of hope. When you think

:16:07. > :16:08.of what it takes to become a successful Commonwealth Games

:16:09. > :16:10.athlete, the words kebab`loving, cigarette`smoking and beer drinking

:16:11. > :16:12.probably don't spring to mind. But for Steve Way from Dorset,

:16:13. > :16:15.that was very much the lifestyle he Amazingly, he's just finished

:16:16. > :16:20.10th place in the marathon. At this point Steve Way,

:16:21. > :16:29.the inspirational man... He has been labelled as the man

:16:30. > :16:32.that gives everyone else hope. From this to this

:16:33. > :16:38.in just seven years. The everyday man appeal seems to be

:16:39. > :16:41.quite high because 33 years old, I wasn't an athlete, I was just

:16:42. > :16:45.an overweight couch potato who Steve Way achieved all

:16:46. > :16:51.of his targets in Glasgow. A personal best,

:16:52. > :16:55.a top 10 finish and at the age Tired, achy and still absolutely

:16:56. > :17:05.in a state of euphoria. It is a weird combination of all

:17:06. > :17:10.three, I think, at the moment. The Bournemouth Athletic Club

:17:11. > :17:13.competitor says he has been bowled over by the support received

:17:14. > :17:14.from Dorset. I had Dorset flags out and I saw

:17:15. > :17:22.hundreds of them out on the course. It is a story that has captured

:17:23. > :17:29.the imagination and proves there is When you see me running round

:17:30. > :17:35.the park, have a think and think, And the beauty of running is,

:17:36. > :17:40.all you need is a pair Steve Way giving hope there to

:17:41. > :17:48.everyone in their thirties who Anyway, elsewhere here's

:17:49. > :17:52.a round`up of how the South's other competitors have fared

:17:53. > :18:06.at the Commonwealth Games today. England hockey's Reading contingent

:18:07. > :18:10.went down 3`0 to Australia. It ended their hopes

:18:11. > :18:15.of topping their pool group. England will still reach

:18:16. > :18:18.the semi`final if they draw with or From the Astroturf to the

:18:19. > :18:24.Bowling Green. Berkshire's Andrew Knapper clinched

:18:25. > :18:27.the bronze medal in the men's pairs. It follows on from yesterday's medal

:18:28. > :18:33.success on the track for The 21`year`old, who has cerebral

:18:34. > :18:40.palsy, clinched silver in the T37/38 long jump, she jumped

:18:41. > :18:43.a personal best of four metres. It was great to go out there

:18:44. > :18:53.and be on the track longer, normally I am on the track for 10 or 15

:18:54. > :18:57.minutes and this time I got to feel the atmosphere for so much longer

:18:58. > :19:01.so I am really happy about that. And there will be more medal hopes

:19:02. > :19:03.for the South in the pool tonight with

:19:04. > :19:05.Reading's Adam Barrett competing He was the fastest qualifier so will

:19:06. > :19:10.be going for gold just after nine. Away from the Commonwealth Games,

:19:11. > :19:12.Berkshire schoolgirl Morgan Lake has struck gold for

:19:13. > :19:14.the second time at the World Junior Lake, who attends Wellington College

:19:15. > :19:21.in Crowthorne, won the high jump, adding that to the gold she claimed

:19:22. > :19:23.in the heptathlon. In cricket,

:19:24. > :19:25.plenty of runs were scored at the Ageas Bowl on day two of the third

:19:26. > :19:28.test between England and India. Garry Ballance

:19:29. > :19:33.and Ian Bell both scored heavily ` reaching over 300 runs

:19:34. > :19:38.between them, with Alastair Cook's Glenn Maxwell had a day to remember

:19:39. > :19:58.for Hampshire as he hit his highest one`day score in a run`fest

:19:59. > :20:00.against Lancashire yesterday. The Australian all`rounder struck

:20:01. > :20:02.146 off 96 balls, Lancashire fell 148 runs short

:20:03. > :20:06.of their target giving Hampshire In football, another first team

:20:07. > :20:09.player has left Southampton ` this time it's defender Callum Chambers

:20:10. > :20:12.to Arsenal for an undisclosed fee, In a statement,

:20:13. > :20:15.Executive Director Les Reed says the 19`year`old expressed

:20:16. > :20:18.a desire to leave St Mary's and that Chambers becomes

:20:19. > :20:21.the fifth high`profile Saints Yesterday defender Dejan Lovren

:20:22. > :20:29.moved to Liverpool for ?20 million. The statement goes on to say,

:20:30. > :20:32."It's important to remain calm and Jay Rodriguez and

:20:33. > :20:36.Morgan Schneiderlin are the latest names to be linked with moves away

:20:37. > :20:40.from the club this evening. In boxing,

:20:41. > :20:43.Portsmouth teenager Ebonie Jones is The 16`year`old,

:20:44. > :20:47.seen here in the blue, won gold after beating Poland's Agata Kavecka

:20:48. > :20:51.in a three`round fight in Italy. The Charter Academy pupil is already

:20:52. > :20:56.a three`time amateur boxing national champion and has her eyes firmly set

:20:57. > :21:49.on making the Olympics by 2020. With the anniversary of the

:21:50. > :21:51.First World War next week, many people around the region have

:21:52. > :21:54.big plans to commemorate the event. But one artist

:21:55. > :21:55.from Alresford is thinking small. Nic Joly is now world renowned

:21:56. > :21:58.for his "Little people" works, some fetching tens of thousands

:21:59. > :22:00.of pounds. But an encounter with

:22:01. > :22:02.a veteran has led to him embarking on his most ambitious

:22:03. > :22:05.project to date ` all in miniature. Ben Moore went to meet

:22:06. > :22:48.the artist with a tall order. August 1914. It marks the day that

:22:49. > :22:52.the British expedition advanced. My dear, I am once again out of the

:22:53. > :23:02.trenches and it is a very lucky thing as the hardened systematic

:23:03. > :23:09.path home... We went home in a bag each. People are sending him

:23:10. > :23:12.requests and inspiration, like this letter. It just complete reminds

:23:13. > :23:19.you, actually, what this is all about. I will make this day and when

:23:20. > :23:22.I do, I will know this man, you know, wrote this letter on that day.

:23:23. > :23:28.The know, wrote this letter on that

:23:29. > :23:31.inspiration for Never Forgotten came after the work done with a World War
