:00:00. > :00:11.a UN school and a crowded marketplace in Gaza. That is all

:00:12. > :00:14.tonight's programme: The hidden crime, domestic violence in gay

:00:15. > :00:19.relationships. Why won't thd victims come forward? That was when the

:00:20. > :00:24.punching started, getting dragged around the house and locked in the

:00:25. > :00:32.bedroom. Not allowed to go out and see my family. It was difficult A

:00:33. > :00:36.devious conman, a judge's comments as she sentences a Portsmouth

:00:37. > :00:44.builder to nine years in jahl. Katz, guns and cruelty. The worryhng rise

:00:45. > :00:51.of airgun attacks. Two hurt something for fun, or as a

:00:52. > :00:53.deterrent, is inconceivable to us. And tributes to the fallen from the

:00:54. > :01:04.Army town which never forgot. It's a crime many people ard unaware

:01:05. > :01:08.of because so many victims still But figures gathered, from ` major

:01:09. > :01:14.gay rights campaign group, claim there's widespread domestic abuse

:01:15. > :01:18.within same`sex relationships. More than one in three,

:01:19. > :01:29.gay and bisexual men have experienced at least one incident of

:01:30. > :01:32.domestic abuse in a relationship. They go on to say that 17%

:01:33. > :01:35.of lesbians and bisexual wolen have But more than 80% said they had

:01:36. > :01:40.never reported to the policd. Now specialist officers in Hampshire

:01:41. > :01:42.have joined forces with domdstic violence charities, to encotrage

:01:43. > :01:47.more victims to seek support. Sean is 31 years old now, btt he

:01:48. > :01:54.says when he was younger he was in a Getting dragged around the house

:01:55. > :02:03.and locked in the bedroom and not allowed to even go out,

:02:04. > :02:06.see my family, see my friends. Eventually it was neighbours who

:02:07. > :02:11.alerted Hampshire Police, btt it took a further three months before

:02:12. > :02:15.Sean was given the support to leave. It was hard, because it was like

:02:16. > :02:19.everyday I was waking up to exactly So you think the police shotld have

:02:20. > :02:24.been more involved earlier on? Do think they would be

:02:25. > :02:28.more helpful today? I hear a lot more things now

:02:29. > :02:34.down the doctors about what you can So there is a lot more support

:02:35. > :02:40.now for people in the situation Yes,

:02:41. > :02:48.definitely. Constabulary control room, the main

:02:49. > :02:52.place that deals with any c`lls from But it does seem far less lhkely

:02:53. > :02:55.statistically that anyone in a same`sex relationship would

:02:56. > :02:57.make that call. What we found is that a lot

:02:58. > :03:02.of people are very nervous about actually speaking out

:03:03. > :03:04.about what's happened. Because

:03:05. > :03:06.in some situations they might not have come out to their families

:03:07. > :03:09.to their friends, to the mahn It might be that they are concerned

:03:10. > :03:14.about how the public might view their

:03:15. > :03:17.relationship and the abuse happening there, where there's things going

:03:18. > :03:20.wrong in a relationship. To counter that, Hampshire

:03:21. > :03:24.Constabulary has trained 120 specialist lesbian and gay liaison

:03:25. > :03:29.staff, its largest ever number. This is actually

:03:30. > :03:31.about supporting the people that haven't come forward that m`y come

:03:32. > :03:34.forward and say actually, we're there and we can offer you

:03:35. > :03:37.that safeguarding, that support So hopefully make your life

:03:38. > :03:44.better and turn it around. And then build on that trust

:03:45. > :03:46.and confidence that, perhaps historically,

:03:47. > :03:48.may not have been believed to have As for Sean, he now has a ndw home,

:03:49. > :03:55.a new puppy and a new life. He has this advice for anyone who's

:03:56. > :03:58.going through what he suffered. The first hit, run,

:03:59. > :04:01.get out of there. Don't wait a year, two years,

:04:02. > :04:04.three years because you'll dnd up like I did, very controlled

:04:05. > :04:10.and very timid and depressed. The feeling like you can't go

:04:11. > :04:13.on any more, Earlier this afternoon,

:04:14. > :04:18.I spoke to Richard Lane, from the the gay and lesbian

:04:19. > :04:21.campaign group Stonewall, and I asked him if he was surprisdd by the

:04:22. > :04:24.high prevalence of domestic violence They're in line with the research

:04:25. > :04:28.that we've done that shows that domestic violence is a real issue in

:04:29. > :04:31.same`sex relationships, and also in line with the research that we've

:04:32. > :04:34.done that unfortunately, as with all kinds of domestic report,

:04:35. > :04:36.we still expect this to be So we're really calling

:04:37. > :04:40.on there to be more action to target some of the messages

:04:41. > :04:42.around preventing and tacklhng One of the high figures is that

:04:43. > :04:49.gay and lesbian people are not We see most of the messages around

:04:50. > :04:58.domestic violence and domestic abuse are targeted at the horrific problem

:04:59. > :05:05.of women in relationships whth men. So for a lot of same`sex cotples,

:05:06. > :05:09.they certainly don't see wh`t they are experiencing reflected

:05:10. > :05:11.in those messages, so often they might not often realise thex are

:05:12. > :05:15.being a victim of domestic `buse or So we need to tailor those lessages

:05:16. > :05:19.to show people that regardldss of what relationship you ard

:05:20. > :05:22.in you can be a victim of domestic abuse and then therefore th`t there

:05:23. > :05:25.is support available for yot. Is part of it that for some people

:05:26. > :05:28.it's still very difficult to come out, if you like, and there is still

:05:29. > :05:31.this stigma attached, and they perhaps don't want to go to

:05:32. > :05:37.the police for that very re`son I also think it's important to

:05:38. > :05:40.recognise that domestic abuse can It's not always from a partner,

:05:41. > :05:46.it can be from other members So for a lot of young peopld growing

:05:47. > :05:51.up and coming out to their family, they can also be victims of domestic

:05:52. > :05:54.abuse and domestic violence, and that can be anything from elotional

:05:55. > :05:57.blackmail in terms of threatening to out someone to their family,

:05:58. > :06:00.to their work, to their fridnds So it's really important that

:06:01. > :06:04.service providers are traindd to Orchard close, Abbeyfield, hs

:06:05. > :07:55.a lesbian and gay liaison officer. Orchard close, Abbeyfield, hs

:07:56. > :07:58.nestled away in the heart of Hampshire. It offers sheltered

:07:59. > :08:02.accommodation for older people. But, after today's announcement, this

:08:03. > :08:07.might not be the case. Two residents, both in their 90s, might

:08:08. > :08:12.not be able to afford their fees without the Hampshire countx council

:08:13. > :08:16.funding. It would be devast`ting. The elderly don't always like

:08:17. > :08:23.change. They have friends hdre, they like their routines here, so it

:08:24. > :08:26.could potentially be devast`ting. The supporting people budget was at

:08:27. > :08:30.one time protected by centr`l government. Now, Hatcher cotnty

:08:31. > :08:36.council are no longer legally obliged to offer these types of

:08:37. > :08:41.services `` Hampshire countx council. This means an end to a

:08:42. > :08:44.number of services for young people. Five contracts for accommod`tion

:08:45. > :08:49.will be axed in March, saving the council around ?140,000 per year.

:08:50. > :08:53.The changes mostly affect housing and support for both young `nd old.

:08:54. > :08:57.We've got to make our services sustainable for the future. We have

:08:58. > :09:01.an ageing population, our older people have far more complex needs

:09:02. > :09:05.and we have to look after them. So yes, we have to make these cuts

:09:06. > :09:09.unfortunately. The people that benefited from the programmd are

:09:10. > :09:12.described as having moderatd needs by the council, but there are fears

:09:13. > :09:17.that taking away this support could cost more in the long run. Hf

:09:18. > :09:21.somebody is reliant on a colmunity arm and they fall over and hurt

:09:22. > :09:27.themselves and for the want of that arm they are on the floor for six

:09:28. > :09:32.hours, that is likely to be not just a burden on the NHS, a biggdr burden

:09:33. > :09:37.on Hampshire county council, and a lot of human misery that cotld be

:09:38. > :09:39.avoided. And others think there are better alternatives. Our position

:09:40. > :09:45.all along has been that nond of these cuts that the council is

:09:46. > :09:49.proposing are necessary. Thdre are ?490 million in reserves. They

:09:50. > :09:54.should be used to protect the most honourable. For the Council, saving

:09:55. > :09:58.?7 million is not loose change, and there is still a long way to go to

:09:59. > :10:08.meet a saving target of ?100 million by the end of the year.

:10:09. > :10:15.Still to come, Tony has been enjoying a day of Crest test

:10:16. > :10:20.cricket. England looked set to level the series against India. 1`1 in a

:10:21. > :10:22.day when they have really t`ken control. I will have the latest here

:10:23. > :10:30.later in the programme. The fianc?es of two cyclists killed

:10:31. > :10:33.by a drink driver, in Berkshire are calling for tougher jail terms

:10:34. > :10:35.for motorists who kill. Alexander Walters was driving

:10:36. > :10:38.a stolen car, while disqualhfied, when he hit the two Reading men

:10:39. > :10:41.in February. He was jailed for ten years

:10:42. > :10:43.for both deaths. A petition is now calling

:10:44. > :10:49.for separate sentences to bd handed out for each person killed

:10:50. > :11:00.by a guilty driver. John Moreland and Chris Jarvis,

:11:01. > :11:05.fathers, cyclists and friends. The police knocked on the door `nd they

:11:06. > :11:12.said, it is John, there has been an accident. My initial thought in my

:11:13. > :11:21.head was, he is in hospital. They said no, he is dead. They s`id Chris

:11:22. > :11:27.also. I just completely collapsed. In February, John and Chris were

:11:28. > :11:31.cycling on this road when they were hit by a stolen BMW. The drhver

:11:32. > :11:35.Alexander Walters, was over the drink drive limit, had cocahne in

:11:36. > :11:40.his system and was disqualified In April he was jailed for ten years at

:11:41. > :11:44.Reading Crown Court. If he wasn t in the car he would have done ht with

:11:45. > :11:50.his own hands. That would h`ve been life and 20 last years. Bec`use he

:11:51. > :12:00.was in a car, he only got tdn years. I thought, is that it? I thought,

:12:01. > :12:04.not for two people's lives. They have now started a petition calling

:12:05. > :12:08.for a change to the law. Currently, causing death by dangerous driving

:12:09. > :12:13.has a maximum sentence of 14 years. Even if two people have been

:12:14. > :12:17.killed. They want separate sentences for each victim. We want more change

:12:18. > :12:22.so that Chris is classed as one and John is cast as one. He would have

:12:23. > :12:27.got ten plus ten. We all kndw it would be half of that, and we

:12:28. > :12:32.thought, was that all they were worth? The petition needs 100,0 0

:12:33. > :12:36.signatures to trigger a deb`te in Parliament. A government review of

:12:37. > :12:39.the penalties is also due in a cabin coming months. There should be much

:12:40. > :12:44.more discussion given to judges in this case there certainly should

:12:45. > :12:48.have been more than ten years. This is why the review will be rdally

:12:49. > :12:58.useful. I want people signing this petition to also input into the

:12:59. > :12:59.review what's it goes lives. `` once it goes live. They want the justice

:13:00. > :13:03.they feel has been denied. A "professional,

:13:04. > :13:05.plausible and devious conman". The words of Judge Sarah Munro as

:13:06. > :13:08.she sentenced builder Paul Gaffney from Cosham, to nine years hn

:13:09. > :13:12.prison, for scamming people out of The case followed a year long

:13:13. > :13:30.investigation by Portsmouth City He deliberately targeted thd most

:13:31. > :13:34.vulnerable people. Gaining their confidence before ripping them off.

:13:35. > :13:41.Paul Gaffney conned victim `fter gift and victim, for building job

:13:42. > :13:48.that whenever needed. 85`ye`r`old Peter lost nearly ?35,000. Gaffney,

:13:49. > :13:53.even driving him to his bank to withdraw cash for work that was

:13:54. > :13:59.never done. I know these rogues are around, but I didn't realisd,

:14:00. > :14:05.initially, that he was a rogue. He was so convincing. I feel r`ther

:14:06. > :14:11.ashamed having to admit that it happened to me, but at least I hope

:14:12. > :14:14.it is a warning to other people Prosecutors in court told how he

:14:15. > :14:18.used his charm to gain the trust of his victims before he then preyed

:14:19. > :14:23.upon them, inducing them to part with large sums of money. Some

:14:24. > :14:30.people lost their life savings. All of this prompted the judge here to

:14:31. > :14:34.describe him as "a professional plausible and devious conman". Many

:14:35. > :14:39.of the victims were in their 80s and 90s. He laid upon them, befriended

:14:40. > :14:45.them and essentially coerce them into having work that often was

:14:46. > :14:55.never completed. Any work that was done was often a very poor standard.

:14:56. > :15:00.Her honour described Gaffnex's crimes of of the utmost serhousness.

:15:01. > :15:04.He had brought building trade into disrepute and left his victhms

:15:05. > :15:05.physically, psychologically and financially scarred. She sentenced

:15:06. > :15:12.him to nine years in jail. Police are investigating a series

:15:13. > :15:14.of airgun attacks on a cat, Ellie Robson`Frisby's cat Phckle was

:15:15. > :15:21.shot on three separate occasions She's now enlisted the help

:15:22. > :15:36.of social media to try This is Pickle, over the last five

:15:37. > :15:40.months he had been attacked twice by an air rifle near his home hn North

:15:41. > :15:46.Hampshire. This weekend he was shot again. His owner, Ellie, rushed into

:15:47. > :15:52.the vet. Bullet had gone in from his abdomen straight down and presumably

:15:53. > :15:57.caused quite a lot of damagd. They couldn't do anything, so we had to

:15:58. > :16:04.make the unfortunate decision to put him to sleep. It was probably the

:16:05. > :16:08.worst decision we have ever had to make. These x`rays show the extent

:16:09. > :16:12.of his injuries. The bullet went more than ten centimetres into his

:16:13. > :16:18.body. Heartbroken, she turndd to Facebook. On Monday she posted

:16:19. > :16:21.pictures of Pickle with ple`s for information and support. Shd was

:16:22. > :16:25.overwhelmed by the response. Many neighbours contacted her to say that

:16:26. > :16:34.their pets had been shot in recent months or so. The case is not a one

:16:35. > :16:39.off. The ISP see a `` BRS PCA say they have had many calls about this

:16:40. > :16:43.so far this year, but many go unreported. They want better control

:16:44. > :16:49.and regulation where airguns are sold. It is a serious crime, anyone

:16:50. > :16:56.using an air weapon to hurt an animal could face a ?20,000 fine and

:16:57. > :17:04.up to six months in prison. Pickle's cousin Mali has avoided

:17:05. > :17:06.attacks so far. It's hoped that someone will come forward and avoid

:17:07. > :17:10.animals from losing their lhves Hundreds of people fell sildnt this

:17:11. > :17:13.morning to commemorate the sacrifice made by ten thousand Wiltshhre

:17:14. > :17:16.soldiers during the First World War. Each was represented

:17:17. > :17:18.by a named cross, placed on a wall of remembr`nce

:17:19. > :17:20.at Tidworth Military Cemetery. The Last Post

:17:21. > :17:43.and the silence it commands. As people gathered today at

:17:44. > :17:47.Tidworth Military Cemetery to remember the 10,000 Wilshird men who

:17:48. > :17:56.signed up 100 years ago, and gave their lives in the great

:17:57. > :17:58.War. Men like

:17:59. > :17:59.Private Henry Erwin Merchant, just Henry and the others now have their

:18:00. > :18:06.own cross and poppy in a melorial wall here, with a personal lessage

:18:07. > :18:11.from the children who made them Maybe

:18:12. > :18:24.because he gave up his life for us. Amber's dad, like so many hdre,

:18:25. > :18:31.is a military man based in the military county, out in force

:18:32. > :18:37.today to pay tribute to everyone. I just think it's important that we

:18:38. > :18:39.still remember these men And remember

:18:40. > :18:46.the men still fighting todax? My husband has been away

:18:47. > :18:50.in a couple of wars, he has been to Afghanistan, he has been to Iraq,

:18:51. > :18:55.and probably more to come. A prospect Wilshire is prep`red for,

:18:56. > :18:59.with an extra 4000 military Although today belonged not to the

:19:00. > :19:18.county's future, but to its past. Just to let you know we havd a very

:19:19. > :19:23.special programme on Monday night commemorating the 100 annivdrsary of

:19:24. > :19:29.Britain entering the war. Wd will be at the Tank Museum Dorset whth

:19:30. > :19:33.special events planned. We will also have some of the personal stories of

:19:34. > :19:35.those who fought in the gre`t War. Make sure you are with us for that,

:19:36. > :19:38.Saturday and Monday night. Onto sport and take your pick

:19:39. > :19:41.of the big events on offer in the region over the next week or

:19:42. > :19:43.so, Glorious Goodwood, Cowes Week and Test cricket are all

:19:44. > :19:46.on the south's doorstep. Tony's going to be at all three

:19:47. > :19:49.of those locations over the next week or so, starting tonight with

:19:50. > :20:06.the Ageas Bowl and the test A glorious day for some good

:20:07. > :20:10.cricket. Tremendous. Lovely location, temperatures in the mid to

:20:11. > :20:16.high 20s. A really nice and good crowd. They just left after a day in

:20:17. > :20:22.which England were very much on top. The bigger picture for this game,

:20:23. > :20:28.it's all part of the location trying to get its spot on the map. There

:20:29. > :20:33.are six counties competing, so probably only two tests. It will be

:20:34. > :20:38.very difficult. They have to impress this week. They haven't been helped

:20:39. > :20:41.by the scheduling, test match started on Sunday. The crowds tail

:20:42. > :20:46.off a little bit. Let's tell you about what has been going on on the

:20:47. > :20:56.pitch. England have been on charge. A big match for Alastair Cook. For

:20:57. > :21:06.those who did come along, Alastair Cook set England to win. 112 before

:21:07. > :21:18.the close, Chris Jordan with five overs, 0`22. It is ?1 for under 16

:21:19. > :21:25.is tomorrow. To football news. Back at Southampton today, he showed his

:21:26. > :21:29.eureka at the proposal to sdll him. The Frenchman and striker would not

:21:30. > :21:37.be sold as fans became incrdasingly alarmed by sales. His commerce

:21:38. > :21:41.became public, he has not thus far submitted a transfer request.

:21:42. > :21:43.At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow it's a big night of athletics.

:21:44. > :21:46.Look out for Greg Rutherford in the long jump, Freya Jonds

:21:47. > :21:51.from Southampton is in the javelin final follow it live on BBC0.

:21:52. > :21:56.Meanwhile England's hockey players, shored up by a big Reading presence

:21:57. > :21:59.beat Scotland to reach the semi finals of the event.

:22:00. > :22:02.It was always going to be a phenomenal game

:22:03. > :22:04.Scotland are such a tight, professional outfit.

:22:05. > :22:06.They've been training full time up until this period,

:22:07. > :22:09.so it was a delightful game, I'm sure, for people to watch.

:22:10. > :22:16.It was extremely tough so we're just over the moon to be

:22:17. > :22:18.Right now Reading's Chris Mdars and Winchester born James Hdatly

:22:19. > :22:25.are competing in the final of the Men's one metre springboard.

:22:26. > :22:29.Reading's Mears, who will also dive in the sxnchro

:22:30. > :22:32.with Jack Laugher, qualified third for tonight's final, when e`ch diver

:22:33. > :22:39.You can follow it on the BBC red button.

:22:40. > :22:55.I mentioned that Goodwood h`s been going on of course. The big race was

:22:56. > :23:08.the Sussex stakes. Passing last year's winner tornado.

:23:09. > :23:10.Staying at Goodwood, Alexis will be back in the saddle

:23:11. > :23:13.tomorrow for her second appdarance in the Magnolia Cup charity race.

:23:14. > :23:20.I've been training hard for the Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood.

:23:21. > :23:22.For the first and the last time before thd big

:23:23. > :23:26.day, I've tried out the horse I m going to compete on in the five
