:00:00. > 3:59:59of Ashya King are in a Spanish jail tonight fighting extradition to

:00:00. > :00:17.Britain after they took Hospital regrets that the

:00:18. > :00:21.relationship with Ashya 's family broke down. Meanwhile the

:00:22. > :00:27.five`year`old remains in a Spanish hospital while his parents `re in

:00:28. > :00:34.jail. Our parents being takdn away is quite hard on our family. We are

:00:35. > :00:38.a tight family, united. We'll be hearing from a mother whose son had

:00:39. > :00:49.the proton beam their peak. Also tonight, keep windows shut. The

:00:50. > :00:54.message to Dorset residents. Free if you are and three, the expansion of

:00:55. > :01:07.nursery places to some children `` under three. Doctors at Southampton

:01:08. > :01:13.hospital so they regret the breakdown of their relationship with

:01:14. > :01:17.the parents of Ashya king. They issued a statement saying their

:01:18. > :01:20.first concern was for the wdlfare of the five`year`old, who was taken to

:01:21. > :01:29.Spain last week. The main ddveloper and today has been the parents of

:01:30. > :01:35.his parents in court. As thdy were being escorted, they could be heard

:01:36. > :01:40.saying they simply wanted the best possible treatment for the

:01:41. > :01:50.five`year`old son, Ashya. Today the judge in Madrid or just `` ordered

:01:51. > :01:55.the couple should be detaindd for 72 hours after they refused to except

:01:56. > :02:00.extradition back to the UK. It was revealed the European arrest warrant

:02:01. > :02:06.was issued after police issted evidence to the prosecution service

:02:07. > :02:09.and a district judge. Ashya was very vulnerable, in the back of ` motor

:02:10. > :02:14.car, travelling across Europe. He was not getting the same qu`lity of

:02:15. > :02:21.medical treatment he was receiving in Hampshire at sub hunting General

:02:22. > :02:22.Hospital. In another development, Portsmouth City Council has

:02:23. > :02:46.confirmed it became involved. The family have said on viddos

:02:47. > :02:49.posted on you tube that thex took the five`year`old boy from

:02:50. > :02:54.Southampton Hospital last Thursday because they wanted him to be given

:02:55. > :03:00.proton beam therapy, a treatment currently not available frol the

:03:01. > :03:05.NHS. I was going to get the money to pay for the proton beam therapy

:03:06. > :03:10.They have prevented that now. The police in Spain are involved and I

:03:11. > :03:14.cannot do what I wanted to do. Southampton General Hospital said it

:03:15. > :03:21.had had conversations with the family about treatment options. It

:03:22. > :03:23.offered a second opinion and assistance with organising treatment

:03:24. > :03:27.abroad. The public debate about this case continues. The Portsmotth South

:03:28. > :03:32.MP has written to the Health Secretary and the hospital, calling

:03:33. > :03:36.for a review of the treatment being offered to Ashya and a numbdr of

:03:37. > :03:39.petitions, critical of the way the family has been treated, ard being

:03:40. > :03:46.prepared. One will be presented to the Government tomorrow. Ashya is

:03:47. > :03:51.being treated in a hospital in Malaga. This afternoon, the eldest

:03:52. > :03:58.brother has been allowed in to see him. Speaking before the visit, he

:03:59. > :04:04.said the separation had been incredibly fickle. We never thought

:04:05. > :04:08.this would be such a big de`l. `` incredibly difficult. We want to do

:04:09. > :04:15.what is best for Ashya. I al grateful to everyone back home. The

:04:16. > :04:20.petition is being signed and money is being raised for treatment. I'm

:04:21. > :04:24.very grateful to everyone who has participated in that. How do you

:04:25. > :04:32.think your parents coping bding away from your little boy `` the little

:04:33. > :04:38.boy? My mum is going through a hard time. Ashya is the centre of our

:04:39. > :04:40.family since this all startdd. We moved from Portsmouth to

:04:41. > :04:48.Southampton. A charity were good enough to give us a room. Whth Ashya

:04:49. > :04:53.being taken away from us and our parents being taken away, it is

:04:54. > :04:57.quite hard on our family. This was about raising money to go to the

:04:58. > :05:01.Czech Republic for proton bdam therapy. Why do they think that will

:05:02. > :05:07.make a big difference? You like and we want his quality`of`life to be

:05:08. > :05:11.the best. We have done so mtch research and we know the

:05:12. > :05:14.side`effects of proton beam therapy are less and he would have lore or

:05:15. > :05:21.less in normal life if he rdceived that treatment. If it is successful,

:05:22. > :05:25.we know it does have its risks alongside chemotherapy and

:05:26. > :05:30.radiotherapy. It is not a mhracle treatment but we hope that hf it has

:05:31. > :05:38.all gone well he will benefht after the treatment. At the heart of this

:05:39. > :05:40.case is a dispute between the family and doctors over the best course of

:05:41. > :05:45.treatment. It was a debate complicated

:05:46. > :05:47.by the parent's wishes to explore a relatively new therapy not `vailable

:05:48. > :05:50.on the NHS in this country. Our Health Correspondent David

:05:51. > :05:52.Fenton joins me now. It's clear there was

:05:53. > :05:54.a serious breakdown in the relationship between Southalpton

:05:55. > :05:56.hospital and the King familx? This is a very complicated case

:05:57. > :06:00.but at its heart there is a simple truth ` that familx wanted

:06:01. > :06:02.one thing for their child, The family took Ashya to Sp`in

:06:03. > :06:16.because they claimed hospit`l was considering a court order

:06:17. > :06:19.against them. I spoke to one brain tumour charity

:06:20. > :06:36.` about pressures that both sides I understand what a dark pl`ce this

:06:37. > :06:40.family is in. There is nothhng worse than a child being diagnosed with

:06:41. > :06:48.this devastating illness. You would do anything to fight for yotr child

:06:49. > :06:52.'s corner. It is also very dasy to use perspective and that crhtical

:06:53. > :06:58.distance you need when therd is such high emotions and you are in such a

:06:59. > :07:00.high emotional state. The f`mily has been quite vocal and we havd had

:07:01. > :07:05.from the hospital this afternoon. Yes, almost for the first thme,

:07:06. > :07:08.we had some detail from thel. On the question of what went wrong,

:07:09. > :07:10.the Medical Director, We very much regret that

:07:11. > :07:24.the communication and relationship with the Khng

:07:25. > :07:26.family had broken down in this way. But he also said Ashya's ch`nces of

:07:27. > :07:30.surviving his condition for at least five years are about 70`80%, if he

:07:31. > :07:32.gets the right medical treatment. Of course the family believd that

:07:33. > :07:35.should be proton beam therapy, which is a fairly new kind of radhotherapy

:07:36. > :07:39.which, in theory does less harm to healthy cells around a tumotr

:07:40. > :07:41.because it's much more targdted Well, I spoke to

:07:42. > :07:46.the centre where the family were They said they would be happy to

:07:47. > :07:51.take him immediately, if Southampton sends them Ashya s

:07:52. > :08:07.scans and medical details. Although proton beam therapx isn't

:08:08. > :08:09.yet available in this country, the NHS does pay for patients `

:08:10. > :08:12.mostly children ` One of those to benefit was Sam John

:08:13. > :08:16.from Fareham, who went to Florida last year just after sitting

:08:17. > :08:19.his GCSEs for treatment His mother, Vicky,

:08:20. > :08:37.joins me live from the family home. Thank you both for being with us.

:08:38. > :08:41.This is a very emotional story. This must have brought back a lot of

:08:42. > :08:46.emotion for you, having gond through what you have been through `s a

:08:47. > :08:51.family. It was heartbreaking to hear what the family are going through,

:08:52. > :08:58.heartbreaking. Every parent wants to do the best for their child. Medical

:08:59. > :09:03.options are limited, aren't they? How do you reconcile that? @t the

:09:04. > :09:09.end of the day, we would have moved heaven and earth to get the right

:09:10. > :09:13.treatment for Sam. The hosphtal was deciding whether they would give him

:09:14. > :09:19.the treatment first off, mahnly because of his age. He was ` month

:09:20. > :09:24.older than the normal page. We actually started fundraising

:09:25. > :09:28.straightaway. They said we were not likely to get the funding btt we

:09:29. > :09:33.started to fund raise straightaway. We knew if that was the best

:09:34. > :09:40.treatment for him, that is what we had to do. How much stress did that

:09:41. > :09:44.put you under? It is a knot of stress on the family. It did bring

:09:45. > :09:49.us closer together as a famhly. We found we had so many friends and

:09:50. > :09:54.relatives back could come together and help us. It was amazing. The

:09:55. > :10:02.stress is unbelievable. My husband lost his job over it. There was a

:10:03. > :10:09.lot of stress in the family. Can you understand what the parents of Ashya

:10:10. > :10:15.King have gone through? Sam was 16 and he was five. Sam was di`gnosed

:10:16. > :10:19.when he was nine. He is my baby He is a big one but he is still my

:10:20. > :10:24.baby. To not be able to hold his hands and give him a hug whdn he is

:10:25. > :10:29.feeling low, I cannot imagine not being able to do that. What was the

:10:30. > :10:37.proton beam therapy like to go through? Really simple and dasy A

:10:38. > :10:43.couple of years before I went on chemotherapy, that involved a lot of

:10:44. > :10:47.injections and surgery. The proton beam therapy was actually jtst

:10:48. > :10:55.laying on a bed with a mask on for half an hour or an hour doing

:10:56. > :11:02.nothing. How are you? I am well Yes, the side effects are mdant to

:11:03. > :11:08.come in later in a years tile, up to 20 years. I am all right now but it

:11:09. > :11:13.is still under close watch. Thank you so much, both of you, for

:11:14. > :11:18.joining us. We wish you all the best and hope it turns out well for you.

:11:19. > :11:19.Still to come in this evening's South Tod`y.. .

:11:20. > :11:27.Is it late night shopping for Saints after a summer of selling players?

:11:28. > :11:29.A BBC investigation has discovered that three quarters

:11:30. > :11:32.of nursing shifts on hospit`l wards in the South aren't at the

:11:33. > :11:37.A Freedom of Information repuest was used to get a snapshot of ntrses

:11:38. > :11:41.On elderly care wards in particular, several hospitals didn't re`ch the

:11:42. > :11:44.target of one registered nurse for seven patients, which is recommended

:11:45. > :11:58.They are one of the most visible people who look

:11:59. > :12:02.But it seems there aren't enough nurses on our wards.

:12:03. > :12:05.The Royal College of Nursing says a typical ward should have one

:12:06. > :12:12.There should also be what it calls a skill mix ` 65% of the shhft

:12:13. > :12:17.should be fully trained nurses, the other 35% can be health asshstants.

:12:18. > :12:30.But, in the South, 78% of shifts don't make that r`tio

:12:31. > :12:37.If you have relatives in hospital or if you are going into hospital that

:12:38. > :12:39.hospitals should have taken steps to ensure there are enough people on

:12:40. > :12:42.the wards to provide the care. In the South, five hospitals did not

:12:43. > :12:46.have any shifts with the recommended skill mix on the days we surveyed,

:12:47. > :12:49.including the Isle of Wight and Poole, where around a third of the

:12:50. > :12:51.shifts had the recommended staff ratio reversed,

:12:52. > :12:53.with more health care assistants Poole Hospital refused to do

:12:54. > :12:58.an interview but told us it fully complies with the Government's

:12:59. > :13:00.guidelines and that its own patient survey found staff levels wdre

:13:01. > :13:04.in line with the national average. Those using

:13:05. > :13:20.the hospital had few complahnts I did hear a couple complaining they

:13:21. > :13:26.were understaffed a bit but they managed. They rallied round each

:13:27. > :13:33.other. It was good. I waited about two hours. I found it first class. I

:13:34. > :13:39.had no problems whatsoever. They were there when I needed thdm.

:13:40. > :13:42.Poole and the Isle of Wight also fell well below the recommendation

:13:43. > :13:46.On elderly care wards at St Mary's, it had more than nine patients

:13:47. > :13:59.The hospital says its problems are unique.

:14:00. > :14:06.The difficulties of travel `re quite challenging. We have a dischplined

:14:07. > :14:11.group of student nurses who are keen to work on the island. I am sure we

:14:12. > :14:12.will get to those levels but it will take longer than one would dxpect on

:14:13. > :14:15.the mainland. Hospitals are under no obligation to

:14:16. > :14:18.follow the RCN's recommendations, All say it's

:14:19. > :14:20.the patients who matter. Fire fighters are continuing to

:14:21. > :14:23.tackle a fire at a landfill site in Dorset, with warnings th`t it

:14:24. > :14:26.could take days to extinguish. It broke out the site near Wareham,

:14:27. > :14:29.on Sunday afternoon with reports Residents living nearby are being

:14:30. > :14:34.warned that weather conditions this evening could lead to lore

:14:35. > :14:36.difficult conditions. 71`year`old former professional

:14:37. > :14:44.wrestler Bill has had many fights The latest against the effects

:14:45. > :15:00.of the acrid smoke hanging over I suffer with my chest a bit but it

:15:01. > :15:06.has made it worse today. Re`lly worse. We are in the house `ll day.

:15:07. > :15:10.We have not been out at all. The fire broke out at

:15:11. > :15:12.around 5pm yesterday evening, 1 ,000 sq m of rubbish is affected to

:15:13. > :15:15.a depth of 10m. There's been more than 30 fhre

:15:16. > :15:25.fighters on the site with shx fire I looked up over the wedding awning

:15:26. > :15:27.and there was black, billowhng smoke.

:15:28. > :15:30.This pub is a few hundred mdtres from the site and was advisdd to

:15:31. > :15:45.It has been horrendous. We `re in a hollow and it has been quitd

:15:46. > :15:47.choking. There is no hazardous waste in the landfill. It is general waste

:15:48. > :15:52.that is in the site and is burning. Fire fighters have run this 4

:15:53. > :15:55.km hose from the River Piddle They say it could be days

:15:56. > :16:09.before the fire is fully out. A search is under way for an

:16:10. > :16:12.11`year`old boy who has gond missing between Lulworth Cove and Wdymouth.

:16:13. > :16:19.Dorset Police have a number of officers the area. He has

:16:20. > :16:24.disabilities which may make himself to recognise risks or react

:16:25. > :16:31.difficult `` differently to other children of his age. He was wearing

:16:32. > :16:32.a Hawaiian print T`shirt. Any further information and we will

:16:33. > :16:36.bring it to you when we can. An expansion of nursery provision

:16:37. > :16:39.for disadvantaged two year olds has been launched by a government

:16:40. > :16:42.minister on a visit to Bognor Regis. An extra 130,000 free places will

:16:43. > :16:44.become available nationwide aimed at helping families earning less

:16:45. > :16:46.than ?17,000. But there has been criticisl

:16:47. > :16:50.about funding levels and sole councils say they're struggling to

:16:51. > :17:06.find the extra places. It is a good day for Arthur. He

:17:07. > :17:10.already comes to this nursery in Bognor Regis twice a week. With

:17:11. > :17:16.additional funding he can now come three times. That is great news for

:17:17. > :17:22.his mother. A massive difference. We can pay for an extra session. We are

:17:23. > :17:27.not relying on family members to look after him while I go to work. A

:17:28. > :17:33.lot of difference. Representatives of nurseries and other provhders say

:17:34. > :17:39.the changes are well intenddd but flawed. This policy was announced

:17:40. > :17:43.without any consultation. They are meant to provide the places. They

:17:44. > :17:47.will tell you that the schele is inadequately funded and therefore at

:17:48. > :17:51.some point in time parents will be queueing up for these places and

:17:52. > :18:00.they will not be there. In some areas there are not enough places to

:18:01. > :18:08.cope with demand. Launching the scheme in West Sussex, the

:18:09. > :18:12.Government minister made thhs pledged `` pledge. Local authorities

:18:13. > :18:17.have a statutory duty to provide places. The Government is b`cking

:18:18. > :18:21.that with 100 million of capital investment to ensure the pl`ces are

:18:22. > :18:31.available. In Bognor, there has been a shortage. We were up to ftll

:18:32. > :18:37.capacity and were turning children away. We can provide more places for

:18:38. > :18:41.those children. The nursery extension opens later this lonth.

:18:42. > :18:48.Small children will be able to join Arthur and his friends here.

:18:49. > :18:52.Households on Portland in Dorset have taken part in an experhment to

:18:53. > :18:59.try to cut the amount of sugar in diets. We are looking at thd true

:19:00. > :19:12.health cost of our addiction to shiver. This lane in Portland, home

:19:13. > :19:18.to Bronwen, Stephen and Diane. Like most of us they enjoy the odd sugary

:19:19. > :19:24.treat. I tend to nibble. I do not look at shiver on packets. H

:19:25. > :19:33.normally eat healthily and then I go for a binge week. They have been

:19:34. > :19:42.keeping a food diary. They `re typical of the average person. Our

:19:43. > :19:52.lives have been hijacked by sugar. We need to wind back the harm if we

:19:53. > :19:57.are to improve the increasing burden of chronic disease. I discover what

:19:58. > :20:01.the long`term effects are and see how it is changing our bodids

:20:02. > :20:11.behaviour. We challenge Portland to cut down on the sweet stuff. That is

:20:12. > :20:17.Inside Out at 7:30pm. It is transfer deadline day. Is it like a feeding

:20:18. > :20:22.frenzy? You have to use a f`x machine and no e`mails. It hs the

:20:24. > :20:24.that faxes ever get used. There machine and no e`mails. It only time

:20:25. > :20:29.that faxes ever get used. h`ve been a number of players leaving Saint

:20:30. > :20:33.Mary 's. Today there could be two players coming in. In the l`st few

:20:34. > :20:40.hours, there are two players having their medicals at Saint Marx 's The

:20:41. > :20:47.first is a Belgian defender who has played every game at the World Cup.

:20:48. > :20:51.The second is a pacey winger who has been signed from Salzburg. Hopefully

:20:52. > :20:56.that will go through in the next bailout. It will take spendhng to

:20:57. > :21:03.?60 million. One player who has left Saint Mary 's, he is leaving the

:21:04. > :21:10.club already. He has only bden there a few days. One Saints fan went to

:21:11. > :21:15.buy his shirt, got his name on the back and has now seen the player

:21:16. > :21:23.leave. The club has said thdy will be found him all the money. What

:21:24. > :21:44.about business for other cltbs? Andrew Salmon is now at Bournemouth

:21:45. > :21:53.on a permanent deal. `` `` Sermon. Brighton have let Maxim encode go on

:21:54. > :21:59.loan to a Dutch side. Ryan Baird has also been let go. That is the

:22:00. > :22:04.comings and goings so far on transfer deadline day. When it came

:22:05. > :22:11.to results, it was a mixed bag but our teams in the south. Saints fans

:22:12. > :22:16.are happy to deal `` still have the French midfielder at the cltb. They

:22:17. > :22:23.are even happier after his two goals against West Ham. I have respect for

:22:24. > :22:31.the fans and a respect for the club. I was give my best. I was thinking

:22:32. > :22:37.about my future. Today is clear I have started to concentrate on my

:22:38. > :22:43.football now. The summer signing scored his second in two gales to

:22:44. > :22:50.wrap up the victory. In forlat, it was a familiar face that put them

:22:51. > :23:03.behind at Harrow Road with Lewis grabbing putting them in front. ``

:23:04. > :23:08.Grabban. Reading made it 1`0 at Middlesbrough. Simon Cox proved to

:23:09. > :23:18.be the difference with this cheeky chip. It was a day to remember for

:23:19. > :23:24.defender Lewis Dunk. It is three games unbeaten. His stoppagd time

:23:25. > :23:32.header rescued a point for Charlton. This late goals sneaked in `t the

:23:33. > :23:36.back post. He had only been on the pitch for four minutes but ht was

:23:37. > :23:44.enough to give Newport the win. In the FA Cup we have been following

:23:45. > :23:49.teams in the very early stages. There were knocked out. Thex lost

:23:50. > :23:56.3`0 at home to Longwell Gredn in Bristol. We will continue otr thread

:23:57. > :24:03.by previewing another game hn a fortnight. In cricket, on d`y two of

:24:04. > :24:06.the county champion ship gale at Leicester and share ``

:24:07. > :24:12.Leicestershire, they added just two more runs to their overnight score.

:24:13. > :24:18.Matt Coles was the pick of the bowlers for Hampshire. Bad light
