:00:00. > :00:08.Tonight, a judge sentences a lorry driver to ten years

:00:09. > :00:13.for killing a mother and three children on the A34.

:00:14. > :00:18.We urge you to make a personal commitment to stop

:00:19. > :00:22.using mobile phones while driving and make our roads

:00:23. > :00:29.Living with the stigma of h`ir loss, a teenager speaks out

:00:30. > :00:34.It makes me feel really down about myself.

:00:35. > :00:39.It's not just hair, it's confidence and self-esteem that goes whth it.

:00:40. > :00:44.Pencils ready - three, thred, one, go, Wyvern ninjas.

:00:45. > :00:47.Top of the class for Mr Emeny as he wins a national

:00:48. > :00:54.And hold your breath, the Hampshire cliff diver

:00:55. > :01:11.with a head for heights wins yet another world title.

:01:12. > :01:14."His attention had been so poor he might as well

:01:15. > :01:18.The words of a judge as she sentenced lorry drivdr

:01:19. > :01:23.Tomasz Kroker to ten years hn prison at Reading Crown Court todax.

:01:24. > :01:26.He'd driven along the A34 in August at 50 miles an hour,

:01:27. > :01:29.scrolling through music on his mobile phone as he dhd so.

:01:30. > :01:32.As a result, his lorry ploughed into the back of a queue

:01:33. > :01:37.of stationary vehicles, killing a mother and three children.

:01:38. > :01:39.Today the family has appealed to all motorists

:01:40. > :01:43.to stop using their mobile phones whilst driving.

:01:44. > :01:45.Our first report tonight comes from Joe Campbell,

:01:46. > :02:01.Seldom has a court seen a vhdeo as dramatic and shocking as th`t shown

:02:02. > :02:07.here today. I have never sedn the like of it, but the pictures showed

:02:08. > :02:12.a lorry as it hurtled at 50 miles an hour towards a queue of stationary

:02:13. > :02:16.traffic. What made it more traumatic with the fact that seconds later we

:02:17. > :02:21.all knew that four people wdre dead, but the family of those who died

:02:22. > :02:26.have today connected with the police to make sure that the view hs put

:02:27. > :02:29.out for us all to see, and they hope that will cause a sea changd in how

:02:30. > :02:31.we handle phones while at the wheel. Hurtling towards destruction,

:02:32. > :02:32.video released by police in conjunction with the victims

:02:33. > :02:35.families shows Tomasz Kroker scrolling through his mobild phone

:02:36. > :02:37.playlist, his lorry closing rapidly Moments later, children Eth`n,

:02:38. > :02:47.Josh and Aimee were dead, together with the boy's

:02:48. > :02:51.mother, Tracy Houghton. Their car crushed to a third

:02:52. > :02:54.of its size, pushed In the moments Mr Kroker chose

:02:55. > :03:05.to look at his phone, he caused a multiple vehicld

:03:06. > :03:08.accident that endangered all surrounding road users `nd took

:03:09. > :03:13.the lives of Tracy, Ethan, To all intents and purposes,

:03:14. > :03:20.Mr Kroker's use of his mobile phone while driving turned his lorry

:03:21. > :03:25.into a lethal weapon. Video seen by the judge

:03:26. > :03:28.exposed the wider family's Video seen by the judge exposed

:03:29. > :03:33.the wider family's emotional trauma. I thought that was the worst day

:03:34. > :03:36.of the life, my kids being killed, but I think it was three wedks later

:03:37. > :03:40.when I went to the funeral directors and saw them dead,

:03:41. > :03:44.cold, in their coffins. Witnesses said Mr Kroker

:03:45. > :03:46.was in tears after the crash but insisted his brakes had failed

:03:47. > :03:49.until he was confronted The death toll could easily have

:03:50. > :03:52.been far higher. Adam Pearson's car was thrown upside

:03:53. > :03:57.down, breaking his back. Using a phone while driving is not

:03:58. > :04:02.something minor or inconseqtential, I think it's probably the only good

:04:03. > :04:10.thing that will come out of this, it'll change public attitudds

:04:11. > :04:12.to using a phone while drivhng. It's a horrible case and I hope

:04:13. > :04:18.people learn from it. The judge said to the familx

:04:19. > :04:32.she knew her sentence could never compensate them

:04:33. > :04:35.for their loss - her concern tonight is that nor will it this cotrage

:04:36. > :04:38.other motorists from doing the same The family is urging motorists

:04:39. > :04:43.to think twice before they pick up a mobile phone whilst

:04:44. > :04:45.driving but are you guilty Steve Humphrey's been gauging

:04:46. > :04:49.reaction in Berkshire - he's alongside

:04:50. > :04:58.the A34 tonight. This afternoon everybody we spoke to

:04:59. > :05:05.in Newbury knew about the dreadful crash which happened on this stretch

:05:06. > :05:09.of the A34. After we showed people that video of the incident which was

:05:10. > :05:14.released by the police, most people said they now believe there should

:05:15. > :05:15.be an immediate crackdown on drivers who used mobile phones behind the

:05:16. > :05:18.wheel. It's not the first time I'vd

:05:19. > :05:22.seen people on their It should be more than just points

:05:23. > :05:30.and a fine, there needs to be an educational course where they're

:05:31. > :05:32.shown videos like this. It's just unimaginable

:05:33. > :05:37.and they are just so innocent. Do you think more of us shotld be

:05:38. > :05:41.worried about what other drhvers Absolutely, without a shadow

:05:42. > :05:45.of a doubt. There needs to be some kind

:05:46. > :05:48.of immobilisation of mobile Yeah, oh dear, so caught off

:05:49. > :05:56.guard completely, was he? Well, he should never have been

:05:57. > :05:59.doing it, should he? I think he's got his just ddserts

:06:00. > :06:03.but it doesn't help those poor That's reaction from some pdople in

:06:04. > :06:18.Newbury today. Aimee's mother,

:06:19. > :06:20.Kate Goldsmith, called for lore using their mobile

:06:21. > :06:23.phones behind the wheel. Our Transport Correspondent

:06:24. > :06:25.Paul Clifton is here. There is no evidence to suggest

:06:26. > :06:28.the number of people using a hand held mobile phone

:06:29. > :06:31.at the wheel is going down. Yet the number of drivers ptnished

:06:32. > :06:35.for doing so fell by half l`st last year alone, and by 84

:06:36. > :06:37.per cent since 2011. Principally because fewer police

:06:38. > :06:41.are out on the road looking Every force in this region has cut

:06:42. > :06:55.the size of its roads polichng unit. The cuts that police forces have

:06:56. > :06:58.seen, and they had to make difficult choices,

:06:59. > :07:02.sometimes road traffic policing has been seen

:07:03. > :07:04.as a soft target These officers save lives and we

:07:05. > :07:08.really need to see investment to make sure people think they will be

:07:09. > :07:11.caught when they use a mobile behind Having two cameras in the c`b made

:07:12. > :07:16.a huge difference in this c`se. Forward facing cameras are puite

:07:17. > :07:18.common - they cost no But fitting one facing the driver

:07:19. > :07:22.is more unusual. Obviously it's the boss watching

:07:23. > :07:24.everything they do and not lany employees have that kind of scrutiny

:07:25. > :07:28.but on the other hand many drivers also welcome it because it

:07:29. > :07:31.exonerates them at the time of an incident and demonstrates they were

:07:32. > :07:34.doing the right thing or not doing something they might

:07:35. > :07:36.have been accused of, We know that texting whilst

:07:37. > :07:42.driving impairs reaction times more than being

:07:43. > :07:45.at the legal drink-drive lilit. IAM Road Smart, the Institute

:07:46. > :07:49.of Advanced Motorists, said the courts are playing catch up

:07:50. > :07:53.with society's views on this. Sentencing is out of kilter

:07:54. > :07:56.with public opinion. It supports stronger

:07:57. > :08:00.penalties and more police. The drink-driving battle

:08:01. > :08:03.has largely been won. Because it is regarded

:08:04. > :08:05.as socially unacceptable. Using a mobile phone

:08:06. > :08:09.whilst driving does not Until it does, and until drhvers

:08:10. > :08:15.fear they might be caught, there will be more terrible stories

:08:16. > :08:21.like this one. A woman from Sussex

:08:22. > :08:25.who lost all of her life savings to con artists

:08:26. > :08:27.is warning other people When Sandra - whose identitx we ve

:08:28. > :08:31.concealed - realised she'd been the victim of fraud,

:08:32. > :08:34.she got in touch with the BBC. She played along with the scam,

:08:35. > :08:36.so our Inside Out programme Initially he'd written

:08:37. > :08:49.to tell Sandra, whose identity we have concealed,

:08:50. > :08:54.she'd inherited a huge sum of money. Over the last five months,

:08:55. > :08:57.posing as a bank manager called Jai with another man posing

:08:58. > :09:00.as a Hong Kong solicitor, they have scammed Sandra out

:09:01. > :09:04.of her entire life savings, convincing her to pay them

:09:05. > :09:12.?59,000 in fictitious fees. Jai tells Sandra time is running out

:09:13. > :09:15.and offers to put his money towards one final payment

:09:16. > :09:17.which he says will unlock With no savings left, that

:09:18. > :09:31.would mean her getting into debt. One psychologist says this

:09:32. > :09:44.is a common scamming tactic. "I'm helping you with these

:09:45. > :09:49.deadlines and crises, I though Jai was

:09:50. > :09:55.someone that I spoke to a lot and funnily enough,

:09:56. > :09:57.were even friends. And you can see more

:09:58. > :10:00.on that on Inside Out - Appearance is incredibly

:10:01. > :10:04.important to most teenagers, so imagine what it must be

:10:05. > :10:07.like to lose your hair to alopecia. Anna Robinson was 11 when she first

:10:08. > :10:10.noticed her hair falling out. Now, at 16 she's lost half of it -

:10:11. > :10:14.and says there's a real stigma This weekend, Anna's mum Cl`ire had

:10:15. > :10:18.all of her hair shaved off , to try to raise awareness

:10:19. > :10:20.about the condition. Claire has chosen to go

:10:21. > :10:24.bald, but her daughter Alopecia doesn't make me ugly but it

:10:25. > :10:34.makes me feel it and it makds me feel really down about myself

:10:35. > :10:37.and one of the things peopld don't realise is it's not just hahr,

:10:38. > :10:41.it's confidence All I want is a head full of hair

:10:42. > :10:47.and I can't even have that. For five years she kept

:10:48. > :10:54.her condition secret. Only those closest

:10:55. > :10:57.to her knew, until now. Hair loss seems to be

:10:58. > :11:00.such a taboo subject, it's really stigmatised and we don't

:11:01. > :11:02.talk about it. Every time I did speak about it

:11:03. > :11:10.even to my mum, I would be hn floods Claire's aim is to raise money

:11:11. > :11:16.for the small charity which aims The charity welcomes people speaking

:11:17. > :11:24.out, like Olympic gold medallist While in everyday life she often

:11:25. > :11:30.wears a wig, Anna has several wigs

:11:31. > :11:37.but she would also like to be able to walk around bald

:11:38. > :11:42.with the same confidence. I want people to be aware that hair

:11:43. > :11:46.loss is a normal thing. I think alopecia needs to bd

:11:47. > :11:49.normalised and that stigma needs to go because you can walk down

:11:50. > :11:52.the street and see someone with a full head of hair

:11:53. > :11:55.and it's like, cool, that's great, that's normal,

:11:56. > :11:58.and you should also be able to walk down the street and see somdone

:11:59. > :12:01.with no hair and think Southern Railway has warned unions

:12:02. > :12:22.that it will withdraw its offer Stay with us as we mark Halloween.

:12:23. > :12:23.There's spooky goings on and the case of the haunted swimming pool in

:12:24. > :12:29.Worthing. If I mention school and maths,

:12:30. > :12:32.fun is probably the last But fun is exactly what maths has

:12:33. > :12:36.turned into at Wyvern College near Eastleigh, thanks

:12:37. > :12:39.to the Numeracy Ninjas. That's the name of a mental

:12:40. > :12:41.arithmetic programme which has transformed the subject -

:12:42. > :12:45.not only at Wyvern, but at thousands It's just earned Will Emeny,

:12:46. > :12:51.the teacher behind it, a prdstigious We sent Lewis Coombes back to school

:12:52. > :13:01.to find out more. Right, pencils ready. Three, two,

:13:02. > :13:06.one. 30 questions in five minutes

:13:07. > :13:18.at the start of every lesson. I needed something that would be fun

:13:19. > :13:24.and like a Game for them and I thought I had done martial `rts as a

:13:25. > :13:26.kid and what better than a belt system to level up?

:13:27. > :13:27.Each correct answer is awarded a point.

:13:28. > :13:29.The more right answers you get, the better

:13:30. > :13:33.And when it comes to mental arithmatic, the Year 7 pupils

:13:34. > :13:40.at Wyvern College have developed into quite the Ninja Warriors.

:13:41. > :13:47.We did a research study last year that showed the numeracy ninjas

:13:48. > :13:50.boosted their numeracy by 70% for the average student. Some students

:13:51. > :13:52.it was greater than that. The questions are set to be

:13:53. > :13:55.challenging and the oldest pupil sitting at the back found

:13:56. > :14:04.it harder than most. OK, times tables answers ard 42 I

:14:05. > :14:11.like how we do with at the start of the lesson because it gets ts ready.

:14:12. > :14:16.I liked because it's challenging. At the beginning I got red and then I

:14:17. > :14:25.got Brown. Did anyone get the blackbelt? Congratulation 's. We

:14:26. > :14:27.lost it a year ago and it's grown to 3500 schools all over the world

:14:28. > :14:29.The success of Mr Emeny's brainchild has been

:14:30. > :14:31.rewarded with the accolade of Secondary School Teacher

:14:32. > :14:34.of the Year at a national teaching awards ceremony.

:14:35. > :14:37.The plan is to now roll out an online version of Numeracy Ninjas

:14:38. > :14:48.For those pupils at Wyvern, Mr Emeny has become a significant figure

:14:49. > :14:56.I never knew I would end up a maths teacher but I'm so glad I dhd

:14:57. > :15:05.because I love the job. Go, numeracy ninjas! Congratulations to him and I

:15:06. > :15:14.would think from his whole class. We will move on to sport. It's not a

:15:15. > :15:22.happy story to start with, hs it? Yes, we know the dangers of the

:15:23. > :15:27.sport of horse racing. The champion jockey Jim Crowley was one of two

:15:28. > :15:33.rushed to hospital after a serious incident at Kempton Park. Wd will

:15:34. > :15:40.not show you the accident. That is the worst that fell at the left of

:15:41. > :15:48.the picture, the other forcds, including Jim Crowley on

:15:49. > :15:54.Electrified. He was taken to St George's Hospital at tooting. That

:15:55. > :15:59.is the remainder of the racd. Both men described as being in a serious

:16:00. > :16:00.condition. We will have an tpdate on that on our late news, if wd have

:16:01. > :16:04.one. We can go to football now. We'll start with a look at the top

:16:05. > :16:08.of the EFL championship table. Brighton and Hove Albion

:16:09. > :16:10.cemented their position in second with a victory Chris Hughton

:16:11. > :16:12.described as right up there with the best in his

:16:13. > :16:15.time as Albion manager. Hughton's Albion are second only

:16:16. > :16:17.to his former club Newcastld And look out for Reading,

:16:18. > :16:22.Jaap Stam said top ten was ` big stretch in the summer -

:16:23. > :16:24.the Royals are fifth. Norwich goalkeeper Michael LcGovern

:16:25. > :16:26.had a bad day and his mistake allowed Glenn Murray to get

:16:27. > :16:29.the first of his three on the day. The on-loan striker headed

:16:30. > :16:32.a second on the hour mark Then Murray completed his h`t-trick

:16:33. > :16:43.as Albion marched to a ninth game A super finish coming up

:16:44. > :16:58.from Anthony Knockart compldted It's a special result because we're

:16:59. > :17:04.up against at top team and ht was our day to day. I think the second

:17:05. > :17:10.goal was the big one becausd at that stage they had to open up. Ht starts

:17:11. > :17:16.and a real good opportunity from Glenn and then from that first page,

:17:17. > :17:18.you have a good Norwich teal that are chasing the game.

:17:19. > :17:23.So here's the rest of the weekend's football.

:17:24. > :17:26.The Royals notched up anothdr victory and it was a Nottingham

:17:27. > :17:28.Forest old boy who set them on the way.

:17:29. > :17:30.Gareth McCleary first to re`ct to John Swift's long shot.

:17:31. > :17:34.Jaap Stam singled out the goalkeeper for praise afterwards.

:17:35. > :17:39.Welsh full-back Chris Gunthdr hadn't scored a league goal in over five

:17:40. > :17:42.years but his finish secured all three points.

:17:43. > :17:44.Seven wins now for Stam, a promising opening

:17:45. > :17:52.Bournemouth had excelled in recent weeks but away from home

:17:53. > :17:55.they are not quite hitting the same highs and they were undone

:17:56. > :17:57.by a fabulous goal from former Southampton player

:17:58. > :18:00.The Cherries hit the bar twhce but were eventually beaten

:18:01. > :18:03.when Stewart Downing arrived first to effectively finish the g`me

:18:04. > :18:11.These games we want to come in and challenge ourselves

:18:12. > :18:17.Chelsea were the last team to win at St Mary's in February

:18:18. > :18:23.Eden Hazard put them one up before the break.

:18:24. > :18:26.A curling effort from Diego Costa wrapped up the points and S`ints'

:18:27. > :18:30.focus switches to the visit of Inter on Thursday.

:18:31. > :18:32.In League Two Portsmouth are back on the front foot.

:18:33. > :18:35.Conor Chaplin may be over fhve foot five but he leapt to the rescue

:18:36. > :18:39.as Pompey won at Cambridge, a game which saw Amine Ling`nzi sent

:18:40. > :19:08.The ten men held on and Pompey are fifth.

:19:09. > :19:18.Some sad news, Dave Lanning has died, famously describing the first

:19:19. > :19:19.live darts final on TV in 1884. He started his career on the

:19:20. > :19:40.Bournemouth Echo. Staying with hockey tomorrow night

:19:41. > :19:44.we'll have a special report from the Netherlands where two

:19:45. > :19:47.of team GB's hockey stars are now Sussex's Maddie Hinch

:19:48. > :19:50.and Surrey's Sophie Bray were part of Team GB's gold medal winning

:19:51. > :19:53.team against the dutch This weekend Maddie,

:19:54. > :19:56.from West Chilitington, was up against Sophie

:19:57. > :19:59.and our cameras were in Utrdcht to see what life after Rio

:20:00. > :20:02.had brought for them. Now to someone who always

:20:03. > :20:05.seems to be looking down on the opposition, Hampshird cliff

:20:06. > :20:07.diver Gary Hunt is on top Hunt, who's from Eastleigh

:20:08. > :20:12.and trained at the Quays Diving centre in Southampton

:20:13. > :20:14.won his sixth world title, following the final competition

:20:15. > :20:17.of the season in Dubai. Although that dive placed hhm

:20:18. > :20:23.second, a string of wins throughout the series

:20:24. > :20:25.secured the overall win. The sport - which sees divers jump

:20:26. > :20:32.from a 27 metre high platform and reach a speed of

:20:33. > :20:35.65 miles per hour - is so extreme that only

:20:36. > :20:37.around 50 people in the world have enough technical skills

:20:38. > :20:46.to take part. I heard him talking on the radio

:20:47. > :20:50.about having to change from diving head to coming down with yotr feet

:20:51. > :20:54.first, so that was difficult and look at that, Hurford! It t`kes my

:20:55. > :20:56.breath away, that -- perfect. As you can hardly fail to h`ve

:20:57. > :20:59.noticed, tonight is Hallowedn - the night when the spirits,

:21:00. > :21:02.not to mention young trick To mark the occasion,

:21:03. > :21:05.Richard Latto has been delvhng into BBC South's archives in search

:21:06. > :21:07.of ghostly goings-on. And he's breathed new life

:21:08. > :21:09.into some weird and wonderftl tales of the unexpected -

:21:10. > :21:12.starting in Worthing with the case 1976 and the long hot summer

:21:13. > :21:23.had us diving into the swimming pools to cool off

:21:24. > :21:26.but there was one that was perhaps Swings our baskets

:21:27. > :21:38.around, moves things. Things that suddenly appeardd,

:21:39. > :21:44.suddenly disappear. Sadly this pool has now
