:00:17. > :00:19.17 people were taken to hospital this morning after a coach

:00:20. > :00:22.overturned on a motorway slip road in Oxfordshire.

:00:23. > :00:25.It happened on the northbound exit at Junction 7 of the M40,

:00:26. > :00:28.Thick fog made access to the scene more difficult,

:00:29. > :00:31.and the slip road itself was closed for several hours.

:00:32. > :00:46.Passengers escaped in such a hurry they left their belongings behind.

:00:47. > :00:48.16 adults plus the coach driver were taken

:00:49. > :00:50.to the John Radcliffe Hospital after last night's crash.

:00:51. > :00:53.We had to stabilise the coach to prevent it sliding down the bank

:00:54. > :00:56.any further and from rocking from side to side, to make sure

:00:57. > :01:01.Then we had to search the immediate area for anybody that may have been

:01:02. > :01:03.ejected from the vehicle, so we used thermal imaging cameras,

:01:04. > :01:07.we used some of our remote cameras we have there,

:01:08. > :01:09.we had a period of using audible detection, so we needed

:01:10. > :01:21.There was thick fog just before 3am, when the Heathrow Express bus came

:01:22. > :01:25.It went crashing through the barriers and flipped.

:01:26. > :01:27.Certainly it would have been a chaotic scene.

:01:28. > :01:30.You've got people inside who are probably wanting to get out

:01:31. > :01:33.Also their medical welfare needs to be taken into account,

:01:34. > :01:35.and sometimes getting them out quickly isn't necessarily

:01:36. > :01:40.Two things that we are looking into, obviously keeping an open mind,

:01:41. > :01:43.but the two main things are very foggy at the time and the driving

:01:44. > :01:46.conditions and the fact that the bus wouldn't normally be leaving

:01:47. > :01:50.It's not the first time a coach has veered off

:01:51. > :01:58.This on-board footage from 2010 shows the moment when an Oxford Tube

:01:59. > :02:03.bus crashed at the very same slip road.

:02:04. > :02:14.The slip road was closed while barriers were prepared here today.

:02:15. > :02:16.The Oxford Bus Company has been contacting passengers this afternoon

:02:17. > :02:18.and as foggy conditions remain investigations are continuing

:02:19. > :02:23.to try to work out how this crash happened.

:02:24. > :02:26.The fog has caused travel problems across the region today.

:02:27. > :02:30.Poor visibility on the coast - this view

:02:31. > :02:33.across Poole Bay was typical - badly affected the ferries.

:02:34. > :02:36.Wightlink services between Lymington and Yarmouth and Red Funnel

:02:37. > :02:38.crossings between Southampton and East Cowes were suspended, with

:02:39. > :02:44.There have also been delays and cancellations for flights

:02:45. > :02:49.to and from Gatwick, Heathrow and Southampton airports.

:02:50. > :02:51.And football has fallen victim to the fog as well -

:02:52. > :02:54.Brighton's evening Championship match against Cardiff City has been

:02:55. > :03:00.Elsewhere, the railway line between Eastleigh and Basingstoke

:03:01. > :03:03.in Hampshire was closed for much of this morning,

:03:04. > :03:08.after a body was found by the track near Shawford.

:03:09. > :03:11.Rail replacement buses were laid on and the police say they are not

:03:12. > :03:15.Meanwhile, Southern Rail is warning of severe disruption

:03:16. > :03:17.on their network once again, as conductors stage

:03:18. > :03:26.The company says some routes will have no service

:03:27. > :03:28.at all tomorrow, New Year's Day and on Monday the 2nd,

:03:29. > :03:31.while the majority of others will have a very limited service.

:03:32. > :03:37.It is the biggest night out of the year but many people

:03:38. > :03:41.are going to struggle to get home afterwards, as the Southern strikes

:03:42. > :03:47.The RMT insist they are not trying to disrupt

:03:48. > :03:51.We did cancel the strikes on Christmas Eve and the day

:03:52. > :03:56.We've done everything we can to recognise that the public have

:03:57. > :03:59.been wonderful in supporting our position on maintaining

:04:00. > :04:02.the safety-critical role of the guard on the train.

:04:03. > :04:05.Once again Southern say they will have to cancel around 50%

:04:06. > :04:11.Crucially, though, they are warning anyone who is planning to use

:04:12. > :04:14.the trains to get home after a New Year's night out that

:04:15. > :04:16.many later services in particular will be completely cancelled.

:04:17. > :04:20.The conductors are striking over plans to give drivers responsibility

:04:21. > :04:22.for closing train doors, changing the conductors' roles

:04:23. > :04:29.Southern said 220 conductors have signed up to the new contract

:04:30. > :04:33.and many will begin their new roles from the 1st of January.

:04:34. > :04:35.The proposals we have made are entirely reasonable,

:04:36. > :04:37.we think the union's reaction has been unreasonable

:04:38. > :04:44.We think these strikes are absolutely unnecessary

:04:45. > :04:47.and I would call upon the trade unions to call off these strikes

:04:48. > :04:52.A six-day drivers' strike is planned from January the 9th and the unions

:04:53. > :04:55.say they can't rule out further action for 2017 if an

:04:56. > :05:02.Drink-driving is still a big problem in the region,

:05:03. > :05:05.In the first two weeks of the Force's Christmas

:05:06. > :05:09.and New Year crackdown they've arrested more than 140 people.

:05:10. > :05:12.Additional patrols are being carried out in Berkshire to catch

:05:13. > :05:18.A Christmas lights display in a Buckinghamshire village has

:05:19. > :05:22.helped raise money for a girl with a rare health disorder.

:05:23. > :05:25.Frankie Ross from Pitstone has Rett syndrome, which only affects one

:05:26. > :05:33.This dazzling display, now in its 20th year,

:05:34. > :05:38.is raising money for 11-year-old Frankie Ross.

:05:39. > :05:42.She was diagnosed with Rett syndrome when she was a toddler.

:05:43. > :05:44.She potentially would lose her speech, lose

:05:45. > :05:48.purposeful use of her hands, might not be able to walk,

:05:49. > :05:58.could develop scoliosis, epilepsy, breathing difficulties.

:05:59. > :06:01.The community in Pitstone had initially been fundraising to buy

:06:02. > :06:04.a hoist for Frankie for water therapy but thanks to social media

:06:05. > :06:07.two hoists were donated to the family in the last few weeks.

:06:08. > :06:11.This year we have had a great campaign and I believe that we have

:06:12. > :06:15.We all really get on well as neighbours and it was just

:06:16. > :06:18.the perfect opportunity to pull the stops out for Christmas.

:06:19. > :06:29.There are so many worthy causes and to think that Frankie's touched

:06:30. > :06:31.local residents' hearts enough for them to want

:06:32. > :06:33.to fundraise for her I think is absolutely amazing.

:06:34. > :06:36.There is no cure for Rett syndrome but Frankie's family hope more

:06:37. > :06:42.research and funding will help find better treatments in the future.

:06:43. > :06:49.It's a generally cloudy picture as we end the year

:06:50. > :06:52.but for most it should stay dry for the New Year festivities.

:06:53. > :06:54.We are seeing this weather front pushing down

:06:55. > :07:03.Rather cloudy overnight tonight. arrive until the early hours of New

:07:04. > :07:06.Again we've got those problems with fog and there is a Met

:07:07. > :07:09.Office yellow warning in force until ten o'clock tomorrow morning.

:07:10. > :07:10.With more cloud around overnight tonight

:07:11. > :07:14.I don't think it will be quite as cold as it was last night

:07:15. > :07:18.but still the chance of a bit of frost and

:07:19. > :07:21.indeed those fog patches where we do see any clearer skies.

:07:22. > :07:25.It should clear away to low cloud fairly swiftly

:07:26. > :07:32.and one or two breaks possible through the day.

:07:33. > :07:38.There is also a fair amount of cloud tomorrow, temperatures just about

:07:39. > :07:40.scraping into double figures the sum of us. Staying cloudy into New

:07:41. > :07:46.Year's Eve, the rain continues on Year's Eve, the rain continues on

:07:47. > :07:49.New Year's Day, becoming drier and brighter behind that, but it will

:07:50. > :07:53.feel that much colder with frosty nights.

:07:54. > :07:58.I'm back later with more on today's top stories at 10.50 this evening.

:07:59. > :08:08.If you are heading out on the roads, please take care.

:08:09. > :08:15.Good evening, fog has been a problem in recent days, slow changes over

:08:16. > :08:18.the next 48 hours or so as this weather front moves south bringing

:08:19. > :08:19.rain and behind
