:00:14. > :00:15.Good evening, I'm Jo Kent. for the news where you are.

:00:16. > :00:17.Three major housing developments in the south have been

:00:18. > :00:18.given financial support from the Government.

:00:19. > :00:21.Welborne, near Fareham in Hampshire, and a new site near Eynsham

:00:22. > :00:25.in West Oxfordshire will be designated as Garden Villages.

:00:26. > :00:28.Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire has been named as a Garden Town.

:00:29. > :00:32.As David Allard reports, the new status could push forward

:00:33. > :00:37.projects which have been held up in planning rows.

:00:38. > :00:41.Welborne - it's been talked about for years as a way to solve

:00:42. > :00:46.But after all the protests, a public inquiry and a compulsory

:00:47. > :00:49.purchase row, not one of the planned 6,000 homes has been built yet.

:00:50. > :00:56.Today, though, the project got a shot in the arm.

:00:57. > :00:59.Welborne would be a completely new community, built on these

:01:00. > :01:01.fields, with affordable homes, schools, shops

:01:02. > :01:06.In fact, pretty much what the Government says

:01:07. > :01:12.So now Welborne gets a share of ?6 million and other support

:01:13. > :01:17.What we are looking for is for the Government to start

:01:18. > :01:20.pushing out of the way some of the obstacles to getting this

:01:21. > :01:23.We accept this is needed, the Government accept it is needed,

:01:24. > :01:26.we need homes, we need jobs, we need schools, we need

:01:27. > :01:36.They feel other sites are more suitable for housing.

:01:37. > :01:44.About 1,000 people are wanting homes in our area and it is our duty to do

:01:45. > :01:47.that, but a lot of it could be absorbed in either brownfield sites

:01:48. > :01:50.or sites that have come through and hopefully will go

:01:51. > :01:58.It's likely Fareham can now bid for money to upgrade the A32 and M27

:01:59. > :02:04.Improved transport links will be crucial to another planned garden

:02:05. > :02:11.One of the important aspects of Government backing for this

:02:12. > :02:15.scheme is it gives us access to the Housing Infrastructure Fund

:02:16. > :02:18.and that could go some way to helping alleviate some

:02:19. > :02:23.of the existing problems in nearby areas such as the A40.

:02:24. > :02:26.Meanwhile, thousands of new homes will see the extension of Aylesbury

:02:27. > :02:33.With talk of "new planning freedoms" and "accelerated development",

:02:34. > :02:35.it's clear the Government wants these garden communities built

:02:36. > :02:41.Later this month, they'll set out more radical plans to boost housing

:02:42. > :02:51.So it may not be long before landscapes like this change forever.

:02:52. > :02:54.Two men have been charged after a spate of knife-point robberies

:02:55. > :03:01.Four incidents happened on Friday and Saturday in the Paulsgrove area.

:03:08. > :03:13.And 41-year-old Martin Lee O'Sullivan of Chaucer Avenue has

:03:14. > :03:17.been charged with two counts of robbery.

:03:18. > :03:22.It's hoped around a third of artefacts which were being stored

:03:23. > :03:25.at a disused museum in Swindon could be saved, after a fire

:03:26. > :03:31.Fire fighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze

:03:32. > :03:33.at the old Coate Agricultural Museum, which started on Saturday.

:03:34. > :03:36.The museum had been closed for decades, but a number

:03:37. > :03:41.The Cowes floating bridge on the Isle of Wight

:03:42. > :03:44.will make its last crossing today after 40 years of service.

:03:45. > :03:46.It's being replaced with a new bridge that

:03:47. > :03:51.A temporary launch will operate for foot passengers from tomorrow

:03:52. > :03:54.until the new floating bridge is ready at the end of March.

:03:55. > :03:58.Vehicles will be diverted via Newport.

:03:59. > :04:01.Many people have worked over the festive period, including those

:04:02. > :04:06.But some people give up their time then and throughout the year,

:04:07. > :04:09.doing unpaid voluntary work to help others.

:04:10. > :04:13.Among them, some dog owners whose family pets have been specially

:04:14. > :04:16.trained to help in the search for missing people -

:04:17. > :04:20.often elderly people with dementia or people who are depressed.

:04:21. > :04:26.It's a scene like many in homes across the south

:04:27. > :04:29.this holiday season, families getting together,

:04:30. > :04:34.But Darren Yates and springer spaniel Millie could be

:04:35. > :04:40.Darren and his three-year-old pet dog are volunteers with lowland

:04:41. > :04:44.rescue group Searchdog Sussex, which is drafted in by police forces

:04:45. > :04:47.across the south to help search for missing people.

:04:48. > :04:52.They are on call 365 days a year, which meant abandoning the festive

:04:53. > :04:56.fun last New Year's Day, when the telephone rang.

:04:57. > :05:00.That call came through at ten o'clock on the morning

:05:01. > :05:03.That call came through at ten o'clock in the morning

:05:04. > :05:06.and that was completely out of the blue, so that shook up

:05:07. > :05:10.We were planning on playing a board game, watching a bit of telly,

:05:11. > :05:13.the typical family stuff that you usually do on New Year's Day,

:05:14. > :05:16.but it was a case of dropping everything, grabbing the kit

:05:17. > :05:18.from under the stairs, loading the car and driving 50 miles

:05:19. > :05:21.to help the police search for a missing gentleman

:05:22. > :05:27.I get quite sad because he's missing out on the fun with us but I kind

:05:28. > :05:31.of feel proud of him because he is, like, saving people's lives.

:05:32. > :05:36.However, part of the compensation for ten-year-old Ellen

:05:37. > :05:38.is helping Dad train Millie, playing hide and seek

:05:39. > :05:43.For Millie, it is just a game, she loves the search

:05:44. > :05:48.For her, it is about the search and finding that missing person,

:05:49. > :05:51.going to tell me what she's found and taking me back into

:05:52. > :05:54.But even so, Millie, Darren and the whole family

:05:55. > :06:07.are hoping for a peaceful New Year this time around.

:06:34. > :06:39.And in League Two, there was a 1-0 home win for Portsmouth

:06:40. > :06:43.against League Two promotion rivals Luton.

:06:44. > :06:52.We are in for a cold night, quite markedly so in some areas.

:06:53. > :06:56.We have a Met Office warning out for icy stretches on untreated

:06:57. > :06:59.surfaces and pavements, this is courtesy of a frost that

:07:00. > :07:02.will develop quite widely during the course of tonight.

:07:03. > :07:05.Unsurprisingly, temperatures pretty widely at freezing or below.

:07:06. > :07:12.Some parts of Oxfordshire could be as low as minus 4 to minus six.

:07:45. > :07:46.overnight into Thursday, but then start to pick up a milder

:07:47. > :07:52.theme towards the tail end of the week with some rain

:07:53. > :08:14.Good evening. It has been turning colder and clearer and our weather

:08:15. > :08:18.watchers have been capturing the sunshine. Here is the scene in

:08:19. > :08:23.Derbyshire and where we have had the clear skies by day, we are in for a

:08:24. > :08:27.cold night tonight. Temperatures already plummeting, particularly

:08:28. > :08:30.towards the south with some icy stretches across parts of central

:08:31. > :08:35.and southern England, and into Wales. For the north-west, not as

:08:36. > :08:40.cold, as we have the cloud building. But to the south we could see

:08:41. > :08:44.temperatures down to minus four or five first thing Tuesday morning. If

:08:45. > :08:45.you have a commute back
