:00:00. > :00:09.In tonight's programme: Bird flu in Dorset -

:00:10. > :00:15.cases in the county - but it's feared dozens more swans

:00:16. > :00:25.It's a very serious condition for the birds and it strikes the young

:00:26. > :00:35.ones particularly very hard. I cannot get over the fact that

:00:36. > :00:39.grown adults cannot sit around a table and actually come to some kind

:00:40. > :00:41.of compromise. Miserable is the word. You're being held to ransom

:00:42. > :00:43.effectively. As commuters face another

:00:44. > :00:46.strike the both sides in the Southern Rail dispute go head

:00:47. > :00:49.to head in a televised debate. His boat may be damaged but could

:00:50. > :00:52.Hampshire's Alex Thomson now win And the Wiltshire couple

:00:53. > :00:59.boldly going where no When the opportunity presents

:01:00. > :01:14.itself, you just say yes. An outbreak of bird flu has been

:01:15. > :01:22.confirmed at the famous Abbotsbury Swannery

:01:23. > :01:24.near Weymouth in Dorset. Nine swans have tested positive

:01:25. > :01:27.for the H5N8 strain of the disease. Last month, the government

:01:28. > :01:28.ordered poultry farmers to take precautions -

:01:29. > :01:33.to try to stop the spread of the virus from wild birds

:01:34. > :01:36.to commercial and domestic flocks. One Dorset egg farm says

:01:37. > :01:38.the restrictions are having an impact on the welfare

:01:39. > :01:40.of their chickens, Reporter Steve Humphrey is at

:01:41. > :01:44.Abbotsbury Swannery this evening. But the new discovery of the virus

:01:45. > :01:59.here isn't totally unexpected. There've been cases across Europe,

:02:00. > :02:02.and it arrived here last month, with outbreaks in Wales

:02:03. > :02:04.and Scotland, and a number of English counties,

:02:05. > :02:05.including Gloucestershire, where the wetland reserve

:02:06. > :02:07.at Slimbridge was affected. Since New Year, there've been

:02:08. > :02:09.further cases in Devon and Wales, but the outbreak here

:02:10. > :02:24.is the biggest so far. Confirmation of the presence of the

:02:25. > :02:30.bird flu virus here that Abbotsbury 's winery came after ten dead swans

:02:31. > :02:35.were sent for tests. Nine tested positive for the H5N8 strain of the

:02:36. > :02:39.disease. Very concerned for the birds. It's not a threat to our

:02:40. > :02:44.staff or humans generally, that's been confirmed by the health

:02:45. > :02:48.agencies, so that's the good thing, but it is a very serious condition

:02:49. > :02:53.for the birds down there and it doesn't strike the young ones

:02:54. > :02:59.particularly very hard. So far this winter, around 80 swans have been

:03:00. > :03:11.found dead, double the usual number for the winter period. Back in 2008,

:03:12. > :03:17.the area was hit by the more valuable -- gent hey-mac strain but

:03:18. > :03:21.precautions were put in place. It was a different strain which they

:03:22. > :03:27.thought might be harmful to humans. We lost less birds then then we have

:03:28. > :03:30.this time. At the start of December, the Government ordered poultry farms

:03:31. > :03:35.to bring free range hens in doors and to take precautions in a bid to

:03:36. > :03:45.stop the virus spreading. They say they are disappointed that death

:03:46. > :03:52.Defra didn't tell them about the presence of the virus at Abbotsbury.

:03:53. > :04:00.You want more information? Yes, I feel it isn't good enough. Keeping

:04:01. > :04:04.hens indoors has led to a substantial cut in production. 20%

:04:05. > :04:13.of what we normally get so for us financially, it's quite a big

:04:14. > :04:16.impact, really. the motion was -- the measures imposed to help

:04:17. > :04:21.restrict the spread of bird flu will be in place until February 28.

:04:22. > :04:30.Abbotsbury is closed at the moment. People are hoping the bird flu virus

:04:31. > :04:31.runs its course by the time it is reopened on March 18.

:04:32. > :04:33.A little earlier I spoke to England's Chief Veterinary

:04:34. > :04:35.Officer, Nigel Gibbens, he gave me his reaction

:04:36. > :04:45.We've seen the disease spread through wild birds throughout Europe

:04:46. > :05:00.There is little that can be done because these are wild birds but it

:05:01. > :05:02.does show the level of infection that is present

:05:03. > :05:06.How worried are you that this might spread from there?

:05:07. > :05:09.There's a constant threat from different wild birds.

:05:10. > :05:12.The important thing is we prevent it getting into kept birds,

:05:13. > :05:14.like commercial birds and birds people keep in their backyards.

:05:15. > :05:18.We are keen to advise people to do everything they can to keep birds

:05:19. > :05:39.Public Health England have looked carefully at this and confirmed

:05:40. > :05:44.This is a bird flu that is affecting only birds and hasn't affected

:05:45. > :05:47.people and the Food Standards Agency has said the food

:05:48. > :05:49.Just how concerned are you this year?

:05:50. > :05:51.This is a very serious disease of birds.

:05:52. > :05:53.It is highly infectious and causes diseases,

:05:54. > :06:00.especially in chickens and turkeys, but also potentially swans and geese

:06:01. > :06:07.so it is a particularly serious disease in birds but the good thing

:06:08. > :06:11.is that it's not causing any harm to humans so we need people to keep

:06:12. > :06:13.this disease out of their kept birds, whether it's

:06:14. > :06:18.in their backyard or a commercial poultry farm.

:06:19. > :06:20.Another strike by drivers on Southern Railway

:06:21. > :06:26.The company says no trains will run tomorrow, on Wednesday or Friday.

:06:27. > :06:28.Meanwhile, a strike on London Underground has been

:06:29. > :06:32.causing major disruption for all commuters that was due

:06:33. > :06:37.A BBC news special to be broadcast this evening debates

:06:38. > :06:38.the Southern Rail issues, and hears from passengers.

:06:39. > :06:46.Our transport correspondent Paul Clifton reports.

:06:47. > :06:51.Britain's first rail strike in 20 years has meant misery for hundreds

:06:52. > :06:56.and thousands of people. the debate generated plenty of heat and

:06:57. > :07:02.sunlight, too. It is causing unprecedented disruption to working

:07:03. > :07:04.people. the debate saw the head of Southern's parent company go

:07:05. > :07:13.head-to-head with the leader of the RMT union. There will be a second

:07:14. > :07:20.safety trained person. Guaranteed on every train? Let him speak, for

:07:21. > :07:28.goodness' sake. We will foster a second safety trained person on as

:07:29. > :07:35.many trains as had them before. He won't say it. A second safety

:07:36. > :07:39.trained person on as many trains as we had before this started. What's

:07:40. > :07:43.stopping the settlement of the attitude of the company towards

:07:44. > :07:48.changing the way that trains operated, backed up by Chris

:07:49. > :07:52.Grayling and are refusing to come to compromise. It was a chance for

:07:53. > :07:56.passengers to face the people responsible for ten months of

:07:57. > :08:02.strikes. July I had quit my job and taking a job closer to home, losing

:08:03. > :08:06.myself ?7,000 a year but I did it so I could see my son because you could

:08:07. > :08:14.not get me home on time to do so. Might only -- my journey time is 2.5

:08:15. > :08:21.hours and led to the break-up of our relationship. How did you sleep at

:08:22. > :08:30.night? It's complete and utter nonsense. Afterwards, the company

:08:31. > :08:31.and union had a chat, not formal talks but at least they didn't leave

:08:32. > :08:35.by separate doors without speaking. The Southern dispute has brought

:08:36. > :08:37.misery to thousands of commuters on a daily basis over the past 11

:08:38. > :08:41.months, and every night this week, we're going to be hearing

:08:42. > :08:43.from someone whose life has Tonight, Joe Campbell has been

:08:44. > :08:47.talking to a charity worker now facing a commute which takes two

:08:48. > :09:03.or three times longer Alison wasn't at home today because

:09:04. > :09:06.of her birthday because orbs of getting to the charity office where

:09:07. > :09:14.she works had been scuppered by the tube strike. My very first day, my

:09:15. > :09:22.first week, was when the strike started, so the timing was just

:09:23. > :09:25.unbelievable. It's what happens, you turn up early and find out your

:09:26. > :09:30.claim has been cancelled. Even when the trains are running, getting from

:09:31. > :09:35.Crawley to her office is a nightmare. Alison recorded her

:09:36. > :09:40.journey on this video diary. Finally at Victoria and this is what you

:09:41. > :09:46.get. That isn't enough, you then get handed leaflets telling you things

:09:47. > :09:51.like this. I cannot get over the fact that grown adults cannot sit

:09:52. > :09:56.around a table and actually come to some sort of compromise, agreement,

:09:57. > :10:01.something, and that it would take this long. Alison's job means she

:10:02. > :10:08.can work from home on strike days and she accepts others are in a far

:10:09. > :10:12.worse situation. She says she isn't prounion or management, instead she

:10:13. > :10:17.is on the side of her fellow commuters. I pay almost ?4500 for a

:10:18. > :10:22.season ticket when you don't even get a seat, you get this miserable

:10:23. > :10:27.service, you're surrounded by people who just want to get to work and

:10:28. > :10:31.come home like you. It is miserable, that is the word, you're being held

:10:32. > :10:35.to ransom, effectively. Our transport correspondent

:10:36. > :10:37.Paul Clifton is here - The company and the unions

:10:38. > :10:43.are still poles apart. Last week the drivers' union said

:10:44. > :10:45.they weren't so much on different planets

:10:46. > :10:50.as occupying separate universes. We've had two separate and very

:10:51. > :10:56.detailed industry studies by safety experts which show that driver only

:10:57. > :11:02.operation is safe. And perhaps safer than

:11:03. > :11:04.operation with a guard. The unions have completely dismissed

:11:05. > :11:09.those studies, saying train So from midnight the misery

:11:10. > :11:14.for commuters starts all over again. Tomorrow there will be no trains

:11:15. > :11:17.on Southern Railway at all. The company will lay on buses

:11:18. > :11:21.from Chichester and Horsham, but they will carry just a tiny

:11:22. > :11:24.fraction of the normal passengers. Its advice to passengers

:11:25. > :11:26.is not to travel, and to Wednesday will follow

:11:27. > :11:31.the same pattern. Trains will run on Thursday

:11:32. > :11:34.but be severely disrupted, then on Friday there will again be

:11:35. > :11:36.no trains at all. And a reminder that you can see

:11:37. > :11:39.the debate in full this evening There's also a special extended

:11:40. > :11:43.programme on Radio Sussex and Radio Solent, starting

:11:44. > :11:47.at seven tonight. A new report has found

:11:48. > :11:49.Gatwick Airport contributed ?5.3 billion to the UK's

:11:50. > :11:51.economy last year. The research by Oxford Economics

:11:52. > :11:53.also shows the facility could support an extra 13,000

:11:54. > :11:56.new jobs by 2025 with its Stay with us as we chart

:11:57. > :12:07.the progress of Gosport Could he be on course to win

:12:08. > :12:18.the Vendee round the world race? A 17-year-old boy has been charged

:12:19. > :12:20.with attempted murder following a stabbing

:12:21. > :12:24.on Saturday in Boscombe. Police were called to Ashley Road

:12:25. > :12:28.in Boscombe, where a man The boy has been remanded

:12:29. > :12:32.in youth detention to appear at Winchester Crown Court tomorrow

:12:33. > :12:34.charged with attempted murder and possession of bladed

:12:35. > :12:38.article in public place. The Prime Minister Theresa May

:12:39. > :12:41.visited Hampshire to launch her new initiative

:12:42. > :12:43.on mental health today. The Wellbeing Centre

:12:44. > :12:44.in Aldershot provides support for people with a wide range

:12:45. > :12:48.of mental health conditions. It's a charity, but funded

:12:49. > :12:51.by the local health authority The Prime Minister spent half

:12:52. > :12:56.an hour talking to users We're very fortunate in Hampshire,

:12:57. > :13:03.in this area especially, in that we've got funding that has

:13:04. > :13:07.been put in to deliver They are reasonably inexpensive

:13:08. > :13:18.and produce such great outcomes, which is obviously what

:13:19. > :13:21.the Prime Minister has heard today. I thought she would be more stern

:13:22. > :13:27.but she was really laid-back, quite relaxed, and she seemed

:13:28. > :13:28.genuinely interested The West Sussex car-maker

:13:29. > :13:36.Rolls Royce says it will keep its headquarters in the UK,

:13:37. > :13:39.despite telling workers last year that Brexit would limit its ability

:13:40. > :13:42.to plan and budget for the future. Today the Goodwood-based company

:13:43. > :13:45.reported a 6% rise in sales. Last year, it delivered just over

:13:46. > :13:51.4,000 cars to customers, the second-highest sales

:13:52. > :13:56.record in its history. It's consistently voted one

:13:57. > :14:01.of the best places to live in the hole of the UK,

:14:02. > :14:04.but over the decades many feel Wokingham Town centre has

:14:05. > :14:06.been showing its age. Now, after five years of delay,

:14:07. > :14:11.work is finally starting on the regeneration of the main

:14:12. > :14:14.shopping area, Peach Street. A completely new public

:14:15. > :14:16.square will be created, but the council is warning of no

:14:17. > :14:19.gain without pain, with severe delays expected in one

:14:20. > :14:21.of the busiest towns in Berkshire. As a main shopping street,

:14:22. > :14:30.Peach Street has been a bit It's going to be

:14:31. > :14:43.very Wokinghamesque. It's not going to be this

:14:44. > :14:50.street you see right now. This redevelopment will cost ?24

:14:51. > :14:53.million but the busy thoroughfare will be down to just one lane

:14:54. > :14:55.for 15 weeks. A stone's throw away,

:14:56. > :14:57.the popular Rose Street car park Congestion in the town

:14:58. > :15:01.isn't good, but we need Not a lot of character

:15:02. > :15:08.at the moment, a few shops. I think more independent

:15:09. > :15:11.shops would be lovely. I work in mental health and I'd

:15:12. > :15:14.like to see more money Completely redeveloping a main

:15:15. > :15:22.part of the town centre As well as the destruction caused

:15:23. > :15:27.to the thoroughfare, we have counted eating into units

:15:28. > :15:30.and all those shops had As the council bought

:15:31. > :15:34.all the land in 2010, it says it's in line

:15:35. > :15:41.to make a profit. They say they're going

:15:42. > :15:43.to make the money back. We would have kept the car park

:15:44. > :15:48.and instead of building houses on Rose Street, we would have

:15:49. > :15:51.created a memorial garden. This is the investment we have

:15:52. > :15:54.wanted for years and years, to stop The Peach Street project is expected

:15:55. > :16:22.to finally bear fruit when it Let's move on to sport. We're going

:16:23. > :16:29.to start with sailing. You don't think of the word exciting when you

:16:30. > :16:33.hear about a round the world race. I've been watching Alex Thomson over

:16:34. > :16:44.the Christmas period. When he was passing Cape Horn, now he's so close

:16:45. > :16:55.to the leader. You slowdown in the doldrums and shall be hoping he can

:16:56. > :16:58.get some wind. It is an amazing event, the biggest challenge of them

:16:59. > :17:00.all. We think it's probably got about a week to go.

:17:01. > :17:03.The gap is just under 100 miles and shortening as Alex Thomson

:17:04. > :17:06.attempts to make history and become the first Briton to win

:17:07. > :17:11.The Gosport sailor aboard Hugo Boss has had a terrific few days

:17:12. > :17:14.as he heads up to the finish in Western France, approaching

:17:15. > :17:17.an area in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans known for light winds

:17:18. > :17:19.and when Thomson sent this update, he'd seen his boat

:17:20. > :17:30.Firmly in the doldrums, had a terrible night last night.

:17:31. > :17:36.There's been some wind that I wasn't expecting and I'm

:17:37. > :17:40.There's definitely going to be another slowdown before we get

:17:41. > :17:42.there, the easterly breeze is going to come in

:17:43. > :17:53.We'll have more on the race tomorrow night.

:17:54. > :17:56.The draw for the FA cup fourth round is coming up at 7

:17:57. > :17:59.o'clock over on BBC2, but only two of the region's sides

:18:00. > :18:05.On a weekend where there was very little magic sprinkled around

:18:06. > :18:07.Michael Appleton's men served up a victory against higher

:18:08. > :18:13.Brighton too, secured their place in the next round.

:18:14. > :18:15.Brighton and Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton was named Manager

:18:16. > :18:18.of the Month for December and January started well too.

:18:19. > :18:21.He made 11 changes to his side, but the gamble paid off.

:18:22. > :18:30.It took a while for the Albion to put league one Dons away,

:18:31. > :18:34.but a free header 18 minutes from time means the promotion

:18:35. > :18:43.chasers are into round four for the seventh time in eight years.

:18:44. > :18:46.The first one put us very much on the road and gave us

:18:47. > :18:49.that lift we needed, probably at a period of the game

:18:50. > :18:53.where MK were pushing to get back as a real threat.

:18:54. > :18:57.Rotherham are bottom of the Championship so perhaps it

:18:58. > :19:03.wasn't a shock that Oxford hit the heights at the New York Stadium.

:19:04. > :19:07.McGuire missed a penalty but before long, Ryan Taylor gave them the lead

:19:08. > :19:10.Rotherham levelled, but Oxford were on course for a convincing cup

:19:11. > :19:12.win when Phil Edwards headed in a corner.

:19:13. > :19:14.Then a dangerous cross made it three.

:19:15. > :19:16.Rotherham made the finish interesting, but this header

:19:17. > :19:25.It would be fantastic if we can get a tie against a Premier League side,

:19:26. > :19:28.to give players and fans a chance to go head-to-head

:19:29. > :19:35.Southampton were seconds from going through at Norwich.

:19:36. > :19:37.The not-for-sale Van Dyke volleyed them in front.

:19:38. > :19:40.The teenage debutant Harry Lewis led to his giving away a penalty,

:19:41. > :19:46.converted by Steven Whittaker to level the scores.

:19:47. > :19:48.This super header sent them through and they won't have wanted

:19:49. > :19:51.a replay with the FA Cup semifinal to come, but that's exactly

:19:52. > :20:00.what the face after Steven Naismith's injury-time header.

:20:01. > :20:04.Details of the draw in a moment, but first, the losers this weekend.

:20:05. > :20:06.Eddie Howe admitted with hindsight he regretted making 11 changes

:20:07. > :20:13.as a virtual Bournemouth reserve team lost at Millwall.

:20:14. > :20:16.There weren't too many recognisable figures on the team bus,

:20:17. > :20:19.but a side that's still valued at 40 million shouldn't have

:20:20. > :20:20.capitulated so easily against third-tier opponents.

:20:21. > :20:23.The home side were in front through Steve Morrison before

:20:24. > :20:25.the break and added two more in the second half

:20:26. > :20:27.through Shaun Cummings and Shane Ferguson in stoppage time.

:20:28. > :20:31.Jaap Stam was back at Old Trafford but it was a visit to forget

:20:32. > :20:35.Wayne Rooney's record equalling goal had United on their way to a 5-0

:20:36. > :20:42.It was game over pretty quickly for the Royals.

:20:43. > :20:44.Goalkeeper Al Habsi had a moment to forget too,

:20:45. > :20:53.And Martin Allen said he enjoyed his return to Brentford

:20:54. > :20:55.but his Eastleigh team from the national league were well

:20:56. > :20:58.beaten by the Championship side who stormed into a 3-0 lead

:20:59. > :21:07.Eyeowe Obileye got on the score sheet but the game was over

:21:08. > :21:10.by the break as Brentford powered their way into a 5-1 lead,

:21:11. > :21:14.the non-leaguers out in round three for the second successive year.

:21:15. > :21:16.All the goals are on the BBC website.

:21:17. > :21:20.The draw is live on BBC2 straight after this programme.

:21:21. > :21:27.Brighton are ball 9, Southampton are 29 along with Norwich.

:21:28. > :21:37.The ties are played over the final weekend of January.

:21:38. > :21:40.Claude Puel says he won't select wantaway captain Jose Fnote

:21:41. > :21:46.in Wednesday's EFL cup semifinal first leg against Liverpool.

:21:47. > :21:48.Southampton's Moroccan international Sofianne Boufal is out

:21:49. > :21:51.of the African Cup of Nations due to a knee injury and Nathan Ake has
