:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to South Today, I'm Allen Sinclair.

:00:00. > :00:08.On the programme tonight: Campaigners fighting to free

:00:09. > :00:11.a British mother jailed in Iran are at Downing Street -

:00:12. > :00:13.hoping their voices will carry to politicians with the power

:00:14. > :00:20.Makeshift sea defences that were supposed to last

:00:21. > :00:23.the winter are washed away - leaving waterfront homes

:00:24. > :00:33.And we start this week on a fairly wet note, cooler by the weekend with

:00:34. > :00:38.the chance of Gables. A protest has been held close

:00:39. > :00:40.to Downing Street this evening, over the continued detention

:00:41. > :00:43.of a British woman in Iran. Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe's

:00:44. > :00:45.ordeal began in April - arrested at the airport

:00:46. > :00:47.as she was returning She'd been travelling

:00:48. > :00:49.with her two-year-old daughter Gabriella -

:00:50. > :00:52.whose passport was taken away. She's now being cared

:00:53. > :00:55.for by relatives in Iran. In September, Nazanin was sentenced

:00:56. > :00:58.to five years in prison - but the charges against her

:00:59. > :01:04.remain a secret. Her husband - Richard Ratcliffe -

:01:05. > :01:06.who's from Hampshire - has been campaigning

:01:07. > :01:08.for his wife's release. Our Political Editor Peter Henley

:01:09. > :01:10.was at this evening's protest and sent this report

:01:11. > :01:18.from Westminster. It's now 260 days since Nazanin

:01:19. > :01:21.Zaghari Ratcliffe was taken into She has now been convicted

:01:22. > :01:27.and sentenced to five years and we understand she is in solitary

:01:28. > :01:30.confinement, a long way from a prison in Iran to Downing Street

:01:31. > :01:32.this evening when we understand members of her family

:01:33. > :01:37.were singing carols, trying to keep their spirits up

:01:38. > :01:42.and prevent positive aspects to A lot of it revolves

:01:43. > :01:47.around trying to influence governments,

:01:48. > :01:48.particularly the British government to put more pressure

:01:49. > :01:56.on the Iranian government, and Nazanin's husband Richard

:01:57. > :02:02.believes they are not doing enough. The government is

:02:03. > :02:03.doing more and more but not enough and they

:02:04. > :02:06.need to keep going. There are things they could be

:02:07. > :02:09.doing, they have never criticised the way she has been treated,

:02:10. > :02:12.so we'll keep going, but we are grateful for the small

:02:13. > :02:17.things they are doing. People in Hampshire

:02:18. > :02:29.have been busy as well. A report on the letter writing

:02:30. > :02:32.campaign. Today

:02:33. > :02:33.is a peaceful protest against a frustrating

:02:34. > :02:35.process. It is a message of solidarity

:02:36. > :02:37.and is in conjunction At the moment, she is not

:02:38. > :02:41.very well at all. She has lost a lot of weight,

:02:42. > :02:44.a lot of strength, a lot of hair. She is a British citizen

:02:45. > :02:51.and that is what we can understand, it feels

:02:52. > :02:53.like she has been left to hang out to dry for

:02:54. > :02:56.the last nine months with very little

:02:57. > :03:04.British consular support. I understand the reasons behind that

:03:05. > :03:08.but it still feels like she is a British citizen and it is a British

:03:09. > :03:11.child and we feel she should be home We were not expecting this much

:03:12. > :03:16.support and it helps us to drive this campaign as without local

:03:17. > :03:18.support the campaign wouldn't get Nazanin's 38th birthday

:03:19. > :03:21.is on Boxing Day, one that is likely to be behind bars unless

:03:22. > :03:24.the family's one Christmas wish 26,000 letters now have

:03:25. > :03:34.been sent to that prison in Iran and many tweets,

:03:35. > :03:36.some of which Nazanin got to see on That has cheered her up,

:03:37. > :03:42.and one I think we'll cheer the whole campaign up,

:03:43. > :03:46.I got a chance to speak to the Prime Minister tonight and asked,

:03:47. > :03:49.will she be thinking about Nazanin She said she would be

:03:50. > :04:05.thinking of her and all the other people who are in very

:04:06. > :04:07.difficult situations in the world, and she said the government would be

:04:08. > :04:10.keeping up pressure on the Iranian regime, in the best way they think

:04:11. > :04:13.they can to get Nazanin freed. A serious case review

:04:14. > :04:16.is underway after a Portsmouth woman was found guilty

:04:17. > :04:18.of murdering her 19-day-old son. Nicola Brown was also

:04:19. > :04:20.convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to baby Jake,

:04:21. > :04:22.who died two years ago, after suffering a serious head

:04:23. > :04:24.injury and multiple fractured ribs. Her husband, Jason Brown,

:04:25. > :04:27.was found not guilty of allowing As Steve Humphrey reports,

:04:28. > :04:30.the family were known Baby Jake suffered a series

:04:31. > :04:42.of injuries during his short life. Today, his mother Nicola Brown

:04:43. > :04:44.was convicted of murdering her baby son and causing fractured ribs

:04:45. > :04:48.on previous occasions. The boy's father Jason Brown left

:04:49. > :04:51.court after being found not guilty of causing or allowing the death

:04:52. > :04:57.of a child. As the jury returned its verdict,

:04:58. > :04:59.Nicola Brown shouted repeatedly from the dock,

:05:00. > :05:03.she said, "I didn't do it, I did not do it, they have

:05:04. > :05:05.made a huge mistake. I hope this haunts you

:05:06. > :05:10.until the day you die." Senior detectives say

:05:11. > :05:15.it was a difficult case. It has been a complex investigation

:05:16. > :05:17.piecing together the short It is important for us

:05:18. > :05:21.to establish who has been The family was living

:05:22. > :05:28.at Agincourt Road in Portsmouth. During the trial, Nicola Brown,

:05:29. > :05:31.on the right, described how the lights went out in her baby's

:05:32. > :05:34.died when she was feeding him. Baby Jake died later

:05:35. > :05:52.that day in hospital. The jury was told Mrs Brown had

:05:53. > :05:54.anxiety issues, was taking antidepressants and had been

:05:55. > :05:59.in denial about her pregnancy. The court was told social

:06:00. > :06:01.services had been alerted He had been deemed at risk

:06:02. > :06:08.but not at immediate harm. Midwives visited the family twice

:06:09. > :06:12.but no concerns were raised. The Portsmouth Safeguarding Children

:06:13. > :06:14.Board is now conducting The judge told her she would be

:06:15. > :06:28.sentenced in the New Year after a psychiatric

:06:29. > :06:29.report has been prepared. Steve Humphrey, BBC South Today,

:06:30. > :06:32.at Winchester Crown Court. Sussex Police says it's

:06:33. > :06:33.investigating six separate reports of historical sex abuse at football

:06:34. > :06:36.clubs in the county. None of the claims relate

:06:37. > :06:38.to league sides Brighton The force says the offences

:06:39. > :06:42.were allegedly committed by six Across the UK there have been

:06:43. > :06:45.reports of abuse relating Further strike action meant it's

:06:46. > :06:52.been another difficult day for commuters unable to travel

:06:53. > :06:55.by Southern Rail. Another ten days of action

:06:56. > :06:58.are already scheduled. It's the most significant disruption

:06:59. > :07:01.to trains for 20 years. But the Prime Minister today said

:07:02. > :07:04.she won't consider proposed new anti-strike legislation,

:07:05. > :07:06.and aims to focus instead Beachfront homes are again at risk

:07:07. > :07:14.at Pagham in West Sussex after sea defences -

:07:15. > :07:16.designed to protect them over Residents are worried that any

:07:17. > :07:20.further high tides or bad weather They've been waiting for more

:07:21. > :07:25.than a year for a planning decision over more effective defences,

:07:26. > :07:33.as Sean Killick reports. But it was a different

:07:34. > :07:45.picture here on Friday. Just days after the local

:07:46. > :07:47.council put 10,000 cubic metres of shingle down,

:07:48. > :07:49.a tidal surge coincided That has resulted in the loss

:07:50. > :07:54.of the majority of shingle that had been put to increase the depth

:07:55. > :08:01.to the beach crest. They will be concerned because this

:08:02. > :08:04.was a defence for the winter. We have two very high tides

:08:05. > :08:06.over the coming months. That will be the protection that

:08:07. > :08:09.has been washed away. I'm not aware of any other emergency

:08:10. > :08:11.work being undertaken. The district council says it

:08:12. > :08:13.will undertake work as resources allow and it has carried out

:08:14. > :08:16.significant works in recent years including building a rock

:08:17. > :08:18.revetement, and it believes the work carried out last week reduced

:08:19. > :08:21.the effect of the tidal surge. We had the tidal surge come

:08:22. > :08:24.through two metres above normal. It came as far as the edge

:08:25. > :08:27.of the vegetation which is Pagham parish council wants to cut

:08:28. > :08:30.through a shingle bank which has appeared in recent years,

:08:31. > :08:32.altering the currents, and the council believes

:08:33. > :08:39.causing beach erosion. Whatever happens with the planning

:08:40. > :08:41.application, work won't be getting underway in the next couple

:08:42. > :08:44.of months which means the residents in the seafront properties

:08:45. > :08:46.here will remain vulnerable to the worst of the storms

:08:47. > :08:49.for the remainder of this winter. Sean Killick, BBC

:08:50. > :08:51.South Today, Pagham. We're back tomorrow

:08:52. > :08:54.with bulletins in BBC Breakfast - and there's more through the night

:08:55. > :08:56.on the BBC news channel. Right now, Alexis Green is here

:08:57. > :09:07.with our regional weather forecast Thank you. We are looking for the

:09:08. > :09:12.weather for the week ahead up to and including the Christmas weekend. We

:09:13. > :09:18.start an HLA note with some rain and drizzle at times, sunny spells as

:09:19. > :09:22.well and a strong wind, especially towards the weekend. For some,

:09:23. > :09:28.clearing skies and we may have a touch of frost with the temperature

:09:29. > :09:32.falling to freezing or just above. Laws of 3- sex and the winds light,

:09:33. > :09:39.so the possibility of light rain or patchy drizzle. One showers

:09:40. > :09:43.especially along the south coast on the Isle of White, some may drift

:09:44. > :09:49.inland but generally dry with the temperature reaching a high of five.

:09:50. > :09:54.Quite chilly out in the open but the wind will be liked. Tomorrow night

:09:55. > :09:57.we start on a dry note work through the early hours, the clouds will

:09:58. > :10:01.thicken from the west and we see outbreaks of light and patchy are

:10:02. > :10:06.moving in from the West with the temperature tomorrow falling to

:10:07. > :10:11.three Celsius, so a chilly start and the wet start with this band of rain

:10:12. > :10:15.which will clear Easter words and a dry interlude with some sunny spells

:10:16. > :10:22.before the next batch of rain arrives. Fragmented rain and very

:10:23. > :10:25.patchy in nature with the high of five. Warmer temperatures on

:10:26. > :10:29.Thursday through the course of Thursday we see this Reg of high

:10:30. > :10:32.pressure building in with the chance of rain and showers at times but

:10:33. > :10:37.drying out through the course of the day. The next batch of rain on the

:10:38. > :10:42.way with this low pressure moving in on Thursday and into the early hours

:10:43. > :10:45.of Friday, Friday see some strong winds and the winds increased

:10:46. > :10:49.through the course of the day and coming wet Friday night into the

:10:50. > :10:53.early hours of Saturday morning, so a dry start and some brighter spells

:10:54. > :10:58.but the rain will push on from the West and the wind increases in

:10:59. > :11:00.strength. The chance of gales for the south coast. Looking to the

:11:01. > :11:03.weekend, called with The rest of the weekend, some rain

:11:04. > :11:10.around, windy, but with dry and bright spells.

:11:11. > :11:17.Heavy weather is brewing, it will not reach us just yet. It will take

:11:18. > :11:21.a good few days before the stormy weather reaches us. At the moment,

:11:22. > :11:25.it's just potential, nothing is certain, but it will be different to

:11:26. > :11:30.what we've had over the last few weeks, it's been so calm. We have a

:11:31. > :11:32.jet stream raging out of North America making a beeline for the UK.

:11:33. > :11:34.It
