:00:00. > :00:00.Hello - I'm Allen Sinclair, with the late news from South Today.
:00:00. > :00:08.On the programme tonight: Caught trying
:00:09. > :00:13.to sell powerful guns, ammunition and explosives that he'd
:00:14. > :00:15.stolen from his base in Dorset - the Royal Marines reservist jailed
:00:16. > :00:22.could this man's conviction for drug smuggling be about to cost
:00:23. > :00:25.his family their home - after they were landed with a huge
:00:26. > :00:56.Nobody ever says that he has done the line committee will get a bill
:00:57. > :00:58.seven days to pay it. He was caught in an undercover sting
:00:59. > :01:01.- attempting to sell weapons including an assault rifle
:01:02. > :01:03.and explosive grenades which he'd Tonight a Royal Marine reservist
:01:04. > :01:07.who served in Iraq and Afghanistan is starting a 14-year prison
:01:08. > :01:09.sentence. The judge said Martin Shannon
:01:10. > :01:23.from Hythe in Hampshire was guilty This was the moment that officers
:01:24. > :01:27.apprehended Martin Shannon. The 43-year-old Royal Marines reservist
:01:28. > :01:31.was known to have stolen a haul of weapons and explosives and have been
:01:32. > :01:36.a tempting to supply them on the black market. One detained. Among
:01:37. > :01:41.the items Martin Shannon had stolen was an automatic assault rifle and a
:01:42. > :01:45.semiautomatic handgun, both weapons used by the special forces. He had
:01:46. > :01:53.also taken 1400 rounds of ammunition along with hand grenades, a plastic
:01:54. > :01:57.explosive. Upon his arrest, Shannon admitted stealing from the base of
:01:58. > :02:00.the four years. In August Michael Shannon met an undercover officer
:02:01. > :02:06.from the National Crime Agency who was posing as a potential buyer.
:02:07. > :02:10.During their meeting in a pub car park, Martin Shannon rented out to
:02:11. > :02:17.the weapons as well as selling the officer explosives and ammunition in
:02:18. > :02:20.exchange for ?10,000 cash. Martin Shannon later told officers that he
:02:21. > :02:26.had been hoarding the stolen guns and ammunition in watertight
:02:27. > :02:29.containers buried in the new Forest. After a search by specialist
:02:30. > :02:33.officers, they recovered another gun, this time a sawn off shotgun,
:02:34. > :02:38.along with ammunition from his three hiding places in the woods. Officers
:02:39. > :02:42.also recovered more ammunition and explosives from his home in hive.
:02:43. > :02:48.The case has raised questions over how often weapons the money to the
:02:49. > :02:55.Armed Forces may end up in the hands of criminals. Lots of different
:02:56. > :03:01.supply lines the criminals, by Ron dealers... We tackle all the
:03:02. > :03:05.different areas of supply. This is rigidly infrequent but it is
:03:06. > :03:09.recognised that there is a vulnerability is we're working with
:03:10. > :03:12.the MoD to look at whether there is more kinky. Shunin, who pleaded
:03:13. > :03:20.guilty to 15 offences, described himself as a broken man. He said he
:03:21. > :03:21.was suffering from post, the Spurs disorder -- post-traumatic stress
:03:22. > :03:22.disorder. A short time ago she told me
:03:23. > :03:25.the fact weapons and ammunition had gone missing WAS noticed
:03:26. > :03:33.and investigated. Back in 2012 the disappearance of
:03:34. > :03:37.the victims was noticed and the MOD launched an investigation then but
:03:38. > :03:42.failed to locate the weapons, despite Martin Shannon being
:03:43. > :03:46.questioned at the time. The MoD told us it takes security were generally
:03:47. > :03:52.very seriously and has procedures to prevent theft from its bases. The
:03:53. > :03:55.MOD hasn't commented on exactly how Martin Shannon was able to amass
:03:56. > :03:58.this horde of very dangerous weapons over and above years.
:03:59. > :04:01.The family of an Isle of Wight jailed for drug smuggling fear
:04:02. > :04:03.they could lose their home - after being handed
:04:04. > :04:09.Jon Beere was sentenced to 24 years in prison five years ago.
:04:10. > :04:12.He's still protesting his innocence, and the case is being reviewed.
:04:13. > :04:15.But meanwhile a debt recovery firm is chasing his family for more
:04:16. > :04:33.I was just completely shocked, surprised... She says her legal aid
:04:34. > :04:37.bill for over ?71,000 came out of the blue. And the timing, just
:04:38. > :04:45.before Christmas, has been very upsetting. We had never been told
:04:46. > :04:49.that this could happen. Nobody ever said that he's done the line, you
:04:50. > :04:55.will get a bill with seven days to pay. John Beer has been imprisoned
:04:56. > :05:01.away from his three children for six Christmases. A scaffolder, John was
:05:02. > :05:08.jailed for 24 years for his role in smuggling cocaine valued at ?53
:05:09. > :05:11.million. The persecution said he organised a complex operation based
:05:12. > :05:16.on the Isle of Wight to smuggle a quarter of a tonne of the truck into
:05:17. > :05:20.the UK, involving sacks of cocaine being dropped off from a container
:05:21. > :05:27.ship and being picked up by a fishing boat and then tied to a boy
:05:28. > :05:37.to be collected later. For rock -- for other men received jail terms.
:05:38. > :05:44.Are you utterly convinced of his innocence? Absolutely, absolutely,
:05:45. > :05:47.all of them. John's case and those of the four the men I know being
:05:48. > :05:51.considered by the criminal cases review commission but even before a
:05:52. > :05:57.decision is made, the legal aid bill is being pursued. This story that is
:05:58. > :06:02.playing out for the family, Dickens couldn't have written it. They
:06:03. > :06:05.already have lost their father and husband, the prison, for a crime he
:06:06. > :06:09.didn't commit and now the bailiffs are knocking on the door. Deloitte
:06:10. > :06:15.has written to the debt collection agency challenging the legal aid
:06:16. > :06:21.bill -- the lawyer. So says the only asset is their home stop the
:06:22. > :06:26.children, I have fought like mad to keep this as best ability, our
:06:27. > :06:32.stability. And John and I fought really hard for the house before
:06:33. > :06:35.this wrongful conviction. Sue and her family I know hoping the demand
:06:36. > :06:40.for the legal aid fees will be lifted and that the criminal cases
:06:41. > :06:42.review commission makes a decision about jumpers macro case as quickly
:06:43. > :06:50.A father who won a legal challenge against the Isle of Wight Council
:06:51. > :06:53.after taking his daughter out of school for a family holiday,
:06:54. > :06:55.will have to re-state his case before the Supreme court.
:06:56. > :06:57.Jon Platt made national headlines in May,
:06:58. > :07:00.the penalty fine imposed by the local education authority.
:07:01. > :07:03.The case will be reconsidered at the end of January.
:07:04. > :07:05.Mr Platt says it means "uncertainty and distress" for parents
:07:06. > :07:12.who've subsequently taken holidays in term-time.
:07:13. > :07:14.Their dream homes have been beset by structural problems.
:07:15. > :07:16.Neighbours on a new housing development near Reading have
:07:17. > :07:19.appealed to their MP, after running out of patience
:07:20. > :07:27.The company's denied it's done little to put things right.
:07:28. > :07:41.In this area here, the plasterboard has had to be removed because they
:07:42. > :07:48.had detected... This was meant to be windy's dream home. 12 months old,
:07:49. > :07:52.that dream is a nightmare. It's being propped up by the ceramic
:07:53. > :07:58.tiles I have got fitted on the wall in the downstairs loo, that's what
:07:59. > :08:02.holding up the RS J that supports the entire brickwork above, front
:08:03. > :08:08.door. Wendy says there is problems with the installation, heating and
:08:09. > :08:13.the windows. She's so fed up she has taken her for stretching out so all
:08:14. > :08:19.can see. If you saw the show house you thought, if I buy this house, I
:08:20. > :08:23.can have that. It's been anything but. Yes, I live unable to cite but
:08:24. > :08:29.I didn't expect to have the builders living with me. -- I live in a
:08:30. > :08:34.building site. One, I would say, didn't buy a house here. No one from
:08:35. > :08:38.Taylor Wimpey awarded to appeal camera but in a statement today they
:08:39. > :08:42.say they regretted any inconvenience caused the residents, and are
:08:43. > :08:46.committed to caring at remedial works and inside job should be
:08:47. > :08:49.considered by the end of January and all of them is fixed by the end of
:08:50. > :08:54.April next year. The development here still being built for the local
:08:55. > :08:58.MP says work should have stopped. But they haven't done that, they
:08:59. > :09:03.have robbed of residence and me, to be honest, as well, time after time
:09:04. > :09:08.and we have reached a point where this really can't go on much longer.
:09:09. > :09:11.Wendy is now been told that she and the family will have to move out in
:09:12. > :09:14.January whilst repairs are made. At a time which should be packing
:09:15. > :09:38.Christmas presents, she's packing boxes instead.
:09:39. > :09:42.That's it for tonight - thanks for your company.
:09:43. > :09:45.We're back with bulletins in BBC Breakfast tomorrow -
:09:46. > :09:52.right now Alexis Green's here with our regional weather.
:09:53. > :10:01.We have some rain clearing is the woods and when to do is clear, we
:10:02. > :10:06.race patchy frost and Mr frog. Temperatures in the countryside may
:10:07. > :10:18.well fall to around minus one Celsius. A frosty and foggy started
:10:19. > :10:21.tomorrow, the fog may be slow to lift but what does clear, it's
:10:22. > :10:22.cloud may start to build into high lovely day, staying
:10:23. > :10:29.clear during the afternoon and temperatures will fall. A decent day
:10:30. > :10:32.in store tomorrow. Tomorrow night we are expecting clearing skies but
:10:33. > :10:36.then the wins will start to increase, that should keep the frost
:10:37. > :10:40.at bay, this is the storm affecting the north of the country through
:10:41. > :10:44.Friday, the wins. The increase in the South, we will have a spell of
:10:45. > :10:48.rain, a few bright spells Friday morning but they will be a good deal
:10:49. > :10:56.of cloud and the winds could cost between 40 and 50 mph. A lovely day
:10:57. > :11:00.in store tomorrow, strengthening winds through Friday with raiding
:11:01. > :11:01.the afternoon, a decent day for Christmas
:11:02. > :11:05.good for us. Mild by the time we reach Christmas Day.
:11:06. > :11:10.Hello there, there is wet and very windy weather on the way in the
:11:11. > :11:15.run-up to Christmas. The worst of the weather to the northern half of
:11:16. > :11:19.the UK. We have a strengthening jet out of North America that is
:11:20. > :11:23.propgating across the Atlantic. Rushing our way. Picking up low
:11:24. > :11:28.pressure, deepening them, tracking them to the north-west of Scotland,
:11:29. > :11:32.hence the wind and rain. Tonight, we have gale force winds in the
:11:33. > :11:35.north-west of Scotland. Wintry showers here. There is still come
