:00:18. > :00:20.on Boxing Day, had his bedding drenched with water

:00:21. > :00:25.The store says it was an accident, but there has been an angry reaction

:00:26. > :00:30.from many in Portsmouth, as Roger Finn reports.

:00:31. > :00:32.Russell Allen was sleeping in a doorway at Debenhams

:00:33. > :00:35.in Portsmouth, on Boxing Day morning, when he was woken

:00:36. > :00:38.by a security guard and told to move on.

:00:39. > :00:40.Sneaky little comment as he walked away.

:00:41. > :00:43.I argued back, said to him, there's no need to be like this, you

:00:44. > :00:46.don't realise what people are going through.

:00:47. > :00:48.He just continued being rude, walked off.

:00:49. > :00:50.I've gone to pack up all my bedding and whatnot,

:00:51. > :00:53.lifted up my sheet and it's absolutely soaking, and I don't mean

:00:54. > :00:57.just a little bit - it was absolutely drenched.

:00:58. > :01:00.There was an outpouring of sympathy on social media,

:01:01. > :01:11.We could all be in that situation one day, who knows?

:01:12. > :01:14.I think it's awful, to be honest with you, mate.

:01:15. > :01:18.I don't know how, with the Christmas spirit, how they can do

:01:19. > :01:21.I've been homeless over the years myself and I wouldn't

:01:22. > :01:24.In a statement, Debenhams say they take

:01:25. > :01:26.this matter seriously and have investigated it.

:01:27. > :01:29.They say it was an unfortunate accident, in which some

:01:30. > :01:33.routine cleaning on the inside of the fire exit resulted in the

:01:34. > :01:38.gentleman's property on the outside of the fire exit becoming wet.

:01:39. > :01:41.Debenhams have apologised to Russel Allen and provided him

:01:42. > :01:46.But there have been threats against members of their staff

:01:47. > :01:48.and one local councillor, who has been homeless himself,

:01:49. > :01:52.This isn't just about this incident - it's

:01:53. > :01:58.And it's an opportunity for us to raise awareness for the homeless

:01:59. > :02:02.and hopefully bring the business sector a bit closer to working

:02:03. > :02:10.with us for the greater understanding of the homeless.

:02:11. > :02:12.A man's appeared in court in Portsmouth charged

:02:13. > :02:15.with manslaughter, following the death of a 57-year-old man

:02:16. > :02:19.Nick Medlin was a father of two and worked as a prison

:02:20. > :02:23.He died at the Rose Inn on Pier Street in Ventnor,

:02:24. > :02:25.in the early hours of Christmas morning.

:02:26. > :02:28.32-year-old Michael Hudson, of no fixed address,

:02:29. > :02:34.He'll appear at Winchester Crown Court in January.

:02:35. > :02:37.St Mary's hospital on the Isle of Wight has been on black

:02:38. > :02:40.Planned operations were cancelled in response to very high

:02:41. > :02:45.However, the hospital's operations director told the BBC this morning

:02:46. > :02:48.that measures to ease the pressure were working.

:02:49. > :02:50.Extra nurses and doctors were brought in and more

:02:51. > :02:56.The outgoing chief executive in charge of three of Hampshire's

:02:57. > :02:59.hospitals, has spoken about the difficult times

:03:00. > :03:04.Mary Edwards is responsible for Hampshire Hospitals Trust,

:03:05. > :03:07.with sites in Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke.

:03:08. > :03:10.As she comes to the end of 40 years working in the NHS,

:03:11. > :03:17.she spoke to our reporter, Joe Campbell.

:03:18. > :03:20.Mary Edwards isn't saying goodbye just yet,

:03:21. > :03:22.but come the New Year this will no longer be one

:03:23. > :03:27.That doesn't stop her noting the emergency department here hasn't

:03:28. > :03:31.been spruced up under the last three Prime Ministers.

:03:32. > :03:35.Really we ought to be investing in new lifts so that we didn't

:03:36. > :03:41.have to keep repairing, but each lift is probably up to ?250,000 and

:03:42. > :03:47.at the moment we can't prioritise that above other things.

:03:48. > :03:49.One priority will be keeping overseas staff,

:03:50. > :03:52.many of whom have been unsettled by the past year's events.

:03:53. > :03:55.So what does she say to those negotiating Brexit?

:03:56. > :03:58.I would be asking them to do their best to try and

:03:59. > :04:02.make sure we don't destabilise those people who work in an

:04:03. > :04:07.We need staff from overseas, and we need them to feel

:04:08. > :04:11.Soon there will be a new picture hanging here and, after

:04:12. > :04:14.forking out a hefty sum for health care to visit family

:04:15. > :04:18.in Australia and the US, on her retirement Mary Edwards

:04:19. > :04:26.for one remains convinced the NHS is still a bit of a bargain.

:04:27. > :04:29.Now, if you've ever tried hula hooping you'll know it's

:04:30. > :04:32.But that hasn't stopped a schoolgirl from Oxford.

:04:33. > :04:36.Poppy Campion has raised more than ?2500 for charity this week,

:04:37. > :04:39.by hula hooping nonstop for half an hour.

:04:40. > :04:41.The money is going to the charity Seesaw,

:04:42. > :04:45.Poppy came up with the idea after her grandfather

:04:46. > :04:50.We rode on the tractor in the garden.

:04:51. > :04:56.We painted, we played the piano together.

:04:57. > :05:00.She was literally the light of his life, from the moment she was born.

:05:01. > :05:05.They both loved each other very, very dearly.

:05:06. > :05:08.I've never really had people watching me with hula hooping.

:05:41. > :05:43.turning it rather cloudy and damp for a time, before colder

:05:44. > :05:46.For tonight, though, quite a lot of fog around

:05:47. > :05:49.again - maybe not quite as dense as the past couple of nights,

:05:50. > :05:53.with a bit more of a breeze stirring it around, but it will be

:05:54. > :05:55.another cold night - quite a widespread frost again,

:05:56. > :05:56.particularly in rural parts, with temperatures down

:05:57. > :06:00.Tomorrow starts off rather cold and foggy once again,

:06:01. > :06:02.and a cloudier day tomorrow than we've seen today.

:06:03. > :06:04.One or two brighter spells are a strong possibility, but

:06:05. > :06:08.a lot more in the way of cloud, and with a bit more breeze it

:06:09. > :06:10.won't feel particularly warm either, with temperatures

:06:11. > :06:13.Staying cloudy into New Year's Eve, slightly milder for the

:06:14. > :06:16.weekend though, and then we see that rain passing through first
