:00:22. > :00:26.the fact that grown adults cannot sit around the table and actually

:00:27. > :00:31.come to some sort of compromise, agreement. Nine cases of bird flu

:00:32. > :00:35.are confirmed in Dorset, and it is feared many more swans have died.

:00:36. > :00:41.And after a mild start, we'll see some rain with wintry showers later.

:00:42. > :00:46.I will have the weather for the week ahead shortly.

:00:47. > :00:49.In just over an hour, another strike begins

:00:50. > :00:52.by drivers on Southern Rail, which will affect thousands

:00:53. > :00:56.of people across the South and South East.

:00:57. > :00:59.The company says no trains will run tomorrow, on Wednesday or on Friday.

:01:00. > :01:01.Southern is laying on 200 buses instead which will run

:01:02. > :01:07.But the company has advised people not to travel on strike days.

:01:08. > :01:11.And the drivers union Aslef is planning three more days

:01:12. > :01:15.of industrial action on January 24th, 25th and 27th.

:01:16. > :01:18.Tonight a special debate was broadcast here in the South that

:01:19. > :01:21.looked at the issues behind the long running dispute on Southern

:01:22. > :01:29.The televised debate pitched the head of Southern's

:01:30. > :01:40.And for the two men on either side of the

:01:41. > :01:42.long-running dispute over driver only trains,

:01:43. > :01:46.There will be a second safety trained person...

:01:47. > :01:53.Oh, let him speak, for goodness sake.

:01:54. > :01:57.We will roster a second safety trained

:01:58. > :02:00.person on as many trains as had them before...

:02:01. > :02:05.Hang on a second, you need to let me finish.

:02:06. > :02:10.A second safety trained person on as many trains as we had

:02:11. > :02:18.What's stopping the settlement is the attitude of

:02:19. > :02:21.the company towards changing the way the trains are operated, and

:02:22. > :02:24.they are backed up by the DFT and Chris Grayling, and they're

:02:25. > :02:27.The invited audience was largely made up of

:02:28. > :02:29.Southern rail passengers, or former passengers,

:02:30. > :02:31.who told their personal stories of daily frustration since the

:02:32. > :02:42.By July I had quit my job and I had taken a job closer to home, losing

:02:43. > :02:45.myself ?7,000 a year, but I did that so I could see my son

:02:46. > :02:49.because you could not get me home in time to do so.

:02:50. > :02:51.That journey time extended to 2.5 hours, it was

:02:52. > :02:54.becoming absolutely impossible, in fact lead to the break-up of my

:02:55. > :02:58.The continued rail disruption has meant we had to close

:02:59. > :03:02.the business and we've actually lost our livelihoods because of this.

:03:03. > :03:04.The Transport Secretary and the Rail Minister

:03:05. > :03:06.declined to be part of the

:03:07. > :03:09.programme, and it was left to Bexhill MP Hugh Merryman to

:03:10. > :03:19.answer questions about the government's lack of intervention.

:03:20. > :03:21.It;s not the government refusing to drive trains

:03:22. > :03:23.which the independent safety regulator has decreed as

:03:24. > :03:27.They could have put pressure on Southern rail with their track

:03:28. > :03:31.It is hard for the government to come up with more.

:03:32. > :03:33.The question may be whether the parliament has to give the

:03:34. > :03:36.government more powers in legislation to bring this matter to

:03:37. > :03:38.Not everyone is taking sides in a dispute.

:03:39. > :03:41.Alison from Crawley has kept a video diary of her

:03:42. > :03:44.She say she only has her fellow passengers' interests at

:03:45. > :03:48.I cannot get over the fact that grown adults cannot sit around

:03:49. > :03:51.a table and actually come to some sort of compromise, agreement,

:03:52. > :03:58.As you can imagine, the disruption on Southern is one of the

:03:59. > :04:02.issues we get the most feedback on, and here are some of your comments

:04:03. > :04:34.And if you missed the debate, you can see it on the BBC iPlayer -

:04:35. > :04:40.A strain of bird flu which has wiped out thousands of birds in Europe has

:04:41. > :04:46.Nine swans at the famous Abbotsbury Swannery near Weymouth

:04:47. > :04:52.It was first found in the UK last month with cases in Wales,

:04:53. > :04:56.Scotland and a number of English counties including Gloucestershire,

:04:57. > :05:01.where the wetland reserve at Slimbridge was affected.

:05:02. > :05:03.Since New Year there've been further cases in Devon and Wales.

:05:04. > :05:06.However, the outbreak at Abbotsbury is the biggest yet.

:05:07. > :05:12.Confirmation of the presence of the bird flu virus

:05:13. > :05:16.here at Abbotsbury Swannery came after ten dead swans

:05:17. > :05:23.Nine tested positive for the H5N8 strain of the disease.

:05:24. > :05:27.Obviously it's not a threat to our staff or

:05:28. > :05:29.humans generally, that's been confirmed

:05:30. > :05:32.by the health agencies, so

:05:33. > :05:35.that is the good thing, but it is a very serious condition

:05:36. > :05:42.And it does strike the young ones, particularly, very hard.

:05:43. > :05:46.So far this winter, around 80 swans have been found dead.

:05:47. > :05:50.Double the usual number for the winter period.

:05:51. > :05:54.Tonight, government scientists are stressing the current strain

:05:55. > :05:57.of bird flu does not pose a risk to people.

:05:58. > :05:59.This is a very serious disease of birds,

:06:00. > :06:01.but the good thing is it is

:06:02. > :06:05.not causing any concerns to human health, so we need people to keep

:06:06. > :06:08.this disease out of their kept birds, whether it is in their

:06:09. > :06:13.backyard or it's a full-scale, commercial poultry farm.

:06:14. > :06:15.At the start of December, the government

:06:16. > :06:18.ordered poultry farms like this one near Weymouth to bring their free

:06:19. > :06:23.range hens in doors and to take precautions in a bid to stop the

:06:24. > :06:30.They say they are disappointed that Defra did not tell

:06:31. > :06:34.them about the presence of the virus at Abbotsbury a few miles away.

:06:35. > :06:37.We heard that from our vet that we liaise with and

:06:38. > :06:46.Already, keeping their hens in doors has led to a

:06:47. > :06:53.20% of what we normally get, so for us

:06:54. > :06:57.financially, it is quite a big impact, really.

:06:58. > :07:00.The measures imposed to try to restrict the spread of

:07:01. > :07:04.bird flu will be enforced until at least February 28th.

:07:05. > :07:06.The swannery has closed at the moment for its

:07:07. > :07:10.They are hoping the bird flu virus will run its

:07:11. > :07:19.course by the time the swannery reopens on March 18th.

:07:20. > :07:22.The West Sussex car maker Rolls Royce says it will keep

:07:23. > :07:26.its headquarters in the UK - despite telling workers last year

:07:27. > :07:29.that Brexit would limit its ability to plan for the future.

:07:30. > :07:32.1,700 people are employed by the company in Goodwood

:07:33. > :07:38.Today it also reported a 6% rise in sales in 2016.

:07:39. > :07:41.But the company's chief executive told the BBC he still wants more

:07:42. > :07:44.clarity on what Britain's trading relationship with the rest

:07:45. > :07:52.of Europe will be, after it leaves the European Union.

:07:53. > :08:01.We are of course interested knowing that over 90% of our cars are

:08:02. > :08:05.exported into the whole world that we are not face of any trade

:08:06. > :08:12.barriers, that we see a free flow of goods still happening. That we can

:08:13. > :08:18.exchange goods worldwide, that we can also get talent from all over

:08:19. > :08:21.the world, 80% of our workforce is British, but 20% on international as

:08:22. > :08:24.well, and I would like to maintain that.

:08:25. > :08:27.Sailing - and Gosport's Alex Thomson is closing in on the leader

:08:28. > :08:29.of the Vendee Globe round the world race.

:08:30. > :08:32.Thomson - aboard Hugo Boss - is attempting to become the first

:08:33. > :08:34.Briton to win what's called the Everest of the seas.

:08:35. > :08:37.He's less than 100 miles behind leader Armel Le Cl ac'h.

:08:38. > :08:39.The winner is expected to cross the finish line in western France

:08:40. > :08:44.Football, and the draw has been made this evening for the fourth

:08:45. > :08:47.Only two of the south's teams remain in the competition.

:08:48. > :08:50.Brighton will travel to the winners of the third round replay

:08:51. > :08:54.While a home tie against Arsenal will be the reward for Southampton,

:08:55. > :08:57.if they can beat Norwich City in a third round replay next week.

:08:58. > :09:04.That's all from others for this evening, we'll leave you with our

:09:05. > :09:08.weather forecasts. How is it looking? It is set to get colder

:09:09. > :09:12.this week, the weather starts on a fairly mild note would temperatures

:09:13. > :09:16.today reaching double figures and a similar scenario tomorrow. Some rain

:09:17. > :09:21.at times, some sunny spells but cold off on Thursday, that's when the

:09:22. > :09:25.colder. To dig in. Overnight I, the breeze from the west increases in

:09:26. > :09:35.the early hours, temperatures falling away to four Celsius, the

:09:36. > :09:37.chance of solar showers but most places dry with a cute clear spells.

:09:38. > :09:40.A try and a bright start tomorrow, but in the morning, cloud increases

:09:41. > :09:44.and we'll see some rain. Not everyone will have the rainfall, a

:09:45. > :09:48.lot of dry weather. Some cloud with some bright spells and a high of

:09:49. > :09:52.seven to 10 Celsius, with the increasing westerly breeze. Through

:09:53. > :09:58.and I'd come holding on to the cloud, some outbreaks of rain,

:09:59. > :10:01.turning drier, so to start Wednesday, it should be mainly dry,

:10:02. > :10:10.the odd miss patch, we're blows tomorrow night a lot milder, down to

:10:11. > :10:16.around seven. The breeze will increase in the course of the day,

:10:17. > :10:19.as start to change direction to a more north-westerly airflow,

:10:20. > :10:23.dragging in some showers from the north-west. One or two showers on

:10:24. > :10:32.Wednesday after a Tri-Star, temperatures reaching a high of nine

:10:33. > :10:36.to 11 Celsius. -- a dry start. Bringing were at the risk of an

:10:37. > :10:40.isolated shower from the north-west, and with that the chance we could

:10:41. > :10:44.have some wintry nest in the showers, a mixture of rain, sleet

:10:45. > :10:51.and even the odd snow flurry, but aren't expecting any accumulations.

:10:52. > :10:56.Temperatures coming in, making it feel bitterly cold. Temperatures

:10:57. > :11:00.could reach a high of 34 Celsius on Friday in some parts. The weekend

:11:01. > :11:01.will remain cold, the wind will stay with us, wintry

:11:02. > :11:06.precipitation we get will be of a wintry nation and Thursday is one we

:11:07. > :11:09.have to watch out for. The weekend outlook, it stays chilly with a

:11:10. > :11:10.northerly wind and possibly frosty nights.
