:00:07. > :00:07.Good evening, I'm Edward Sault. for the news where you are.

:00:08. > :00:10.In a few hours' time a tidal surge of sea water is expected

:00:11. > :00:13.to hit the south coast, bringing with it a risk of flooding.

:00:14. > :00:15.People living in coastal communities in parts of West Sussex

:00:16. > :00:18.and Hampshire are being warned to prepare themselves.

:00:19. > :00:20.New coastal defences have been built since

:00:21. > :00:24.the last tidal surge which brought misery to some in December 2013 -

:00:25. > :00:30.Nikki Mitchell has been watching preparations in Littlehampton -

:00:31. > :00:40.where large waves could come crashing in just after midnight.

:00:41. > :00:42.This inn is fairly notorious here in Littlehampton

:00:43. > :00:47.New permanent flood defence walls have been built right

:00:48. > :00:49.into its very structure, and along large structures

:00:50. > :00:55.Tonight will be the first major test of these new coastal

:00:56. > :01:01.Where permanent flood defences are still to be completed,

:01:02. > :01:03.temporary barriers have been put up today to protect nearby homes

:01:04. > :01:14.A tidal surge is where strong winds are forcing the sea

:01:15. > :01:17.And also where you've got low-pressure, the actual height

:01:18. > :01:21.So that's what we've got in place at the moment,

:01:22. > :01:26.and that's coming down the North Sea at the moment, which is, you know,

:01:27. > :01:28.causing all those evacuations in those east coast communities.

:01:29. > :01:32.We're not looking at anything of that scale, but we're just making

:01:33. > :01:34.sure that our defences are in as good a condition

:01:35. > :01:37.as they possibly can be, in places we're just bolstering them

:01:38. > :01:49.But also urging people to just, if they are in flood warning areas,

:01:50. > :01:51.to keep an ear out for their phones for any text messages.

:01:52. > :01:54.And if they do get a flood alert or a flood warning,

:01:55. > :01:57.it's very important they do make sure they are prepared,

:01:58. > :02:00.Areas of concern here in Littlehampton up in Arundale,

:02:01. > :02:02.over in Shoreham, and there are flood warnings

:02:03. > :02:05.More alerts are possible, so people need to keep

:02:06. > :02:09.We've got Environment Agency staff out all night,

:02:10. > :02:11.checking the defences that are in place.

:02:12. > :02:24.The tidal surge itself is expected to hit at around 12:30am.

:02:25. > :02:28.We'll have a full weather forecast and a few moments' time.

:02:29. > :02:30.Four day care centres helping people with dementia in Surrey

:02:31. > :02:34.The Alzheimer's Society says it can't afford to keep running

:02:35. > :02:38.There's uncertainty over where else the residents can go

:02:39. > :02:45.This is a centre which is very much rooted in the town of Haslemere.

:02:46. > :02:47.It was set up by local people, and as

:02:48. > :02:57.we saw some of those arriving here this morning,

:02:58. > :02:59.plain from what they had to say, that they'll

:03:00. > :03:03.be completely devastated by the news that it's going to close at the end

:03:04. > :03:06.John, my husband, attends here three days a week.

:03:07. > :03:08.For him, it's going to end his world,

:03:09. > :03:12.This is his world now, the way that the carers and the

:03:13. > :03:15.For the local community, it makes a huge

:03:16. > :03:17.Now, the Alzheimer's Society says that of

:03:18. > :03:19.course people like John, who we were hearing

:03:20. > :03:21.about just that, are the

:03:22. > :03:24.But the simple fact is, that not enough

:03:25. > :03:27.people have been coming here for the centre to pay

:03:28. > :03:29.Surrey County Council says it's disappointed as

:03:30. > :03:32.But the simple fact of course of the Alzheimer's Society

:03:33. > :03:35.would say is that it's largely withdrawal of funding for patients

:03:36. > :03:38.who come here from the county council that's behind what is now

:03:39. > :03:42.Not very long ago, we had six day services running across Surrey.

:03:43. > :03:44.That were well attended and well funded.

:03:45. > :03:46.We're now down to three day services, and we're now faced

:03:47. > :03:50.with having to close those three as well.

:03:51. > :03:55.And we really feel the desperation of carers and

:03:56. > :04:00.Now, this afternoon I caught up with John himself.

:04:01. > :04:10.Now, because of his Alzheimer's, he struggles

:04:11. > :04:12.dementia to in actual fact communicate on occasion.

:04:13. > :04:15.But from what he said to me, it was quite plain that this

:04:16. > :04:18.Well, they've been doing it for some time.

:04:19. > :04:31.Now, both the county council and the Society have said

:04:32. > :04:33.the main priority now is to find alternative places for people

:04:34. > :04:37.If you talk to members of his family and others, though, the

:04:38. > :04:40.simple fact is that they're concerned that there just aren't

:04:41. > :04:46.Thousands of Southern Rail passengers were unable to get

:04:47. > :04:49.to work because of the third strike this week by train drivers.

:04:50. > :04:51.The dispute is about what's known as Driver Only Operation

:04:52. > :04:53.where there is often no traditional guard.

:04:54. > :04:54.Our transport correspondent Paul Clifton has been

:04:55. > :05:01.Driver only operation, where the driver works

:05:02. > :05:06.the train doors, is safe, according to Brian Denton.

:05:07. > :05:11.But only with the right equipment and at stations with platform staff.

:05:12. > :05:14.Some of the trains Southern operate our 15 years old.

:05:15. > :05:24.Inherently, it is safe if it is correctly applied.

:05:25. > :05:32.Now, the technology in particularly the earlier 377s that are used

:05:33. > :05:36.by Southern trains is on par with, say, Windows 95.

:05:37. > :05:46.He was a union official, and later a manager.

:05:47. > :05:48.Drivers currently employed by Southern are not

:05:49. > :05:54.The image and quality that the driver can see in his cab

:05:55. > :06:02.mounted screens is less than it could be.

:06:03. > :06:05.It's quite old technology, and it is low resolution.

:06:06. > :06:10.But the following week, conductors strike on Monday.

:06:11. > :06:15.And then the drivers strike on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

:06:16. > :06:18.It will be even more disruptive than this week.

:06:19. > :06:33.But now, here's Alexis with our weekend forecast.

:06:34. > :06:39.Thank you. We are expecting the chance of one or two wintry showers

:06:40. > :06:43.overnight, which is why there is a Met Office or ice warning in force.

:06:44. > :06:48.It will be bitterly cold. Temperatures in towns and cities

:06:49. > :06:51.will fall away to around minus one Celsius, perhaps down to around -4

:06:52. > :06:55.services in the countryside. The chance with a wintry shower with

:06:56. > :06:58.increasing cloud and northern parts, but otherwise clear skies elsewhere.

:06:59. > :07:01.Chile, frosty start the day tomorrow, still the risk of wintry

:07:02. > :07:07.showers through the course of the day to morrow. -- chilly.

:07:08. > :07:09.Temperatures rising slightly, although there will be the brisk

:07:10. > :07:15.north-westerly wind which will take the edge of temperatures. Eyes of

:07:16. > :07:20.4-7 C. To my right into the early hours of Sunday morning, and Sunday

:07:21. > :07:24.daytime, it will be quite grey, outbreaks of rain at times, and

:07:25. > :07:27.temperatures become milder. A weekend of two halves. A cold day

:07:28. > :07:30.tomorrow with the north-westerly wind. Milder on Sunday, staying mild

:07:31. > :07:32.on 5-6 is the best we will have. It

:07:33. > :07:39.stays cold into the beginning of next week as well

:07:40. > :07:46.stop Good evening, a cold, icy night, but some others have other

:07:47. > :07:50.concerns. This was the scene earlier today, huge waves crashing on to the

:07:51. > :07:54.shoreline at Whitley Bay. We still have the peak of the high tide to

:07:55. > :08:01.come in other parts. This is the flood line number. It's if you have

:08:02. > :08:07.any concerns. The worst of the wind slowly comes -- subsiding. Wintry

:08:08. > :08:11.showers across the North of Scotland and some filtering well inland

:08:12. > :08:15.across the Midlands, giving a light dusting in some places. An icy

:08:16. > :08:19.night, temperatures widely close to or below freezing, particularly

:08:20. > :08:21.where you have snow cover. Tomorrow starts
