:00:32. > :00:34.still using their mobile phones at the wheel. We join the police on

:00:39. > :00:41.to cause more travel disruption Today, thousands of air
:00:42. > :00:43.passengers faced delays and cancellations at Gatwick,
:00:44. > :00:45.Heathrow and Southampton airports. Ferry services to and from the Isle
:00:46. > :00:48.of Wight were also disrupted And there were dozens of accidents
:00:49. > :00:52.on roads across the region this morning as drivers faced the twin
:00:53. > :00:55.hazards of fog and ice. In a moment we'll hear
:00:56. > :00:57.why the fog poses such a problem for our airports,
:00:58. > :00:59.but first Steve Humphrey reports on a frustrating day
:01:00. > :01:22.for many travellers. It is a blanket of fog that has
:01:23. > :01:24.caused widespread travel disruption. Airports have been in the thick of
:01:25. > :01:36.it, literally. The fog wrecked this family's hopes
:01:37. > :01:42.for a smooth ride to Disneyland Paris. They left Dorchester at 3am
:01:43. > :01:48.to get to the airport. We should have flown to Paris at 7:15 a.m.. We
:01:49. > :01:53.have already missed one day at Disneyland, hopefully we will be
:01:54. > :01:57.there tomorrow morning. Everyone, holiday makers and business
:01:58. > :02:00.travellers, it was a very frustrating day. I walk through the
:02:01. > :02:05.door on the flight was cancelled and they had to join a long queue to get
:02:06. > :02:10.rebooked. I am trying to get to Edinburgh for work tomorrow and
:02:11. > :02:14.doesn't like I will get there. As the day progressed, the number of
:02:15. > :02:18.cancelled flights steadily increased. Altogether, Gatwick
:02:19. > :02:27.cancelled 42 and arrivals and departures. 100 flights were
:02:28. > :02:32.also had an impact on the roads with also had an impact on the roads with
:02:33. > :02:38.61 crashes in Hampshire 31 in Dorset. And it has been a
:02:39. > :02:43.challenging day for ferry operators and their passengers on routes to
:02:44. > :02:44.the Isle of Wight with delays and some cancellations because of the
:02:45. > :02:45.poor visibility. So why does the fog end up
:02:46. > :02:48.grounding so many flights? It's a question I put
:02:49. > :02:50.to Dan Townsend - Southampton Airport's Airside Operations
:02:51. > :03:03.Manager. Aircraft operating at airports in
:03:04. > :03:07.the UK have to do so under very strict limitations for visibility

:03:18. > :03:24.obviously very technical logical way advanced these days, can't systems
:03:25. > :03:28.with fog? There are lots of systems that allow them to cope with thick
:03:29. > :03:33.fog but there are days like today with very bad visibility of the
:03:34. > :03:37.technology on the aircraft is always ultimately reliant on the human in
:03:38. > :03:42.the cockpit to have a certain amount of visibility and with thick fog
:03:43. > :03:46.they just don't have that. Can you tell us what it is like logistical
:03:47. > :03:56.way for you planning when there is fog forecast? It is complicated. We
:03:57. > :04:02.are good at it. We spoke to our colleagues in Exeter and we have
:04:03. > :04:06.done a two our conference call everyday and we work with the

:04:14. > :04:21.they have to be cancelled or diverted as well. More fog forecast
:04:22. > :04:25.for tomorrow so I was looking? As you can see behind me, unfortunately
:04:26. > :04:28.the fog has come in in the last hour to the levels we are seeing now run
:04:29. > :04:32.the latest I have heralded as the fog is here to stay for the rest of

:10:15. > :10:19.temperature falling to freezing or just below. Wednesday we have to
:10:20. > :10:25.deal with the freezing fog once again in a few places but it starts
:10:26. > :10:27.to clear and that is because the wind will increase particularly
:10:28. > :10:32.through parts of Dorset and Wiltshire and where we see that, the
:10:33. > :10:39.temperature up a notch to around 5-8. Travelling less cold day on day
:10:40. > :10:47.but Thursday will be bitterly cold. Throwing in freezing a from Europe,

:11:14. > :11:21.see huge righty in the weather. Getting the detail right is proving
:11:22. > :11:26.to be a challenge. This was in Pembrokeshire and other parts of the

:11:50. > :11:55.Northern Ireland and Scotland are mild but damn. This is how we will
:11:56. > :11:58.start the day. At eight o'clock in the morning, quite a lot of fog
:11:59. > :12:04.around which could affect the major airports. What all of us have seen
:12:05. > :12:10.fog. There will be Sunni areas to western fringes of England and
:12:11. > :12:15.Wales. Across Northern Ireland and Scotland it is much milder. Some
:12:16. > :12:19.patchy rain around coming in on the Bruce, particularly over the hills
:12:20. > :12:25.in the West. Much of that will fade away. It will be relatively mild.

:13:01. > :13:05.A real edge to that further south and east. It would be a sign of
:13:06. > :13:08.things to come. On Thursday we will tap into some particularly cold air
:13:09. > :13:15.sitting over the continent for several days now. Europe is frozen
:13:16. > :13:20.at the moment. Some of the freezing cold air will head towards us on a
