:00:43. > :00:46.tram ran in Southampton, but business leaders and politicians
:00:47. > :00:50.There are currently eight tram and light railway
:00:51. > :00:55.With traffic congestion here predicted to increase by 50%
:00:56. > :00:58.over the next decade, an urgent solution's needed.
:00:59. > :01:01.Currently fewer than one in ten people in the southern part
:01:02. > :01:04.of Hampshire use public transport to get to work.
:01:05. > :01:09.So could a new tram network persuade us to ditch our cars?
:01:10. > :01:15.Sabrina Buck drives six miles from Chandlers Ford
:01:16. > :01:23.To get there for nine it can take between 40 minutes and an hour.
:01:24. > :01:25.I have been travelling for about ten years,
:01:26. > :01:27.and it was a lot quieter than it is today.
:01:28. > :01:33.I have had to change my hours to go in earlier when I can.
:01:34. > :01:35.The Local Enterprise Partnership thinks trams may be the answer.
:01:36. > :01:39.These are very early days, but the plans would see trams run
:01:40. > :01:42.on or alongside existing railway tracks from Fareham
:01:43. > :01:45.through the new town of Welborne all the way over to Eastleigh
:01:46. > :01:52.Then on to a new station at St Mary's and a ferry
:01:53. > :01:58.It would then run along the street to the cruise terminal
:01:59. > :02:02.and onto Central Station, where it would rejoin the railway
:02:03. > :02:09.and head up to Romsey past a new Park and Ride by the M27.
:02:10. > :02:12.From there the line would head east through Chandler's Ford to Eastleigh
:02:13. > :02:15.and a new Park and Ride site right on the M3.
:02:16. > :02:17.Another line would head eastwards out of the city.
:02:18. > :02:19.This time from the new St Mary's station, going through Netley
:02:20. > :02:24.and ending at a Park and Ride site here in Segensworth.
:02:25. > :02:27.And finally across Southampton water the old Waterside railway line
:02:28. > :02:29.would be reopened as far as Marchwood, with a Park
:02:30. > :02:37.Now, this all could be in place in 2040.
:02:38. > :02:40.But it's going to cost hundreds of millions of pounds.
:02:41. > :02:42.Isn't this all pie in the sky, though?
:02:43. > :02:45.I think the investment is more than millions,
:02:46. > :02:48.it's probably hundreds of millions of pounds, but this region has been
:02:49. > :02:51.significantly under invested in by the Government in the recent
:02:52. > :02:56.past, and we need to change that dynamic, which is why the Solent LEP
:02:57. > :02:59.took the initiative by developing the strategic transport
:03:00. > :03:08.Trams have been running for 25 years here in Manchester.
:03:09. > :03:12.60 miles of track in the city centre with nearby towns.
:03:13. > :03:21.It is Britain's biggest and busiest light rail network.
:03:22. > :03:23.Southampton lost its tram network in 1949.
:03:24. > :03:25.Plans to reintroduce trams over the years never got
:03:26. > :03:47.Should regional devolution go ahead as well, funding could be made
:03:48. > :03:52.available and developers who build housing alongside the route will be
:03:53. > :03:58.expected to pay as well. The LDP doesn't envisage this is just a
:03:59. > :04:04.light rail network for Southampton but guided busways in South East
:04:05. > :04:09.Hampshire and increasing the speed and frequency of trains between
:04:10. > :04:16.Southampton and Portsmouth. It also wants to introduce a fast ferry
:04:17. > :04:19.service. It is a big plan and will cast their lot of money. -- cost a
:04:20. > :04:23.lot of money. The Civil Aviation Authority has
:04:24. > :04:26.accepted all of the 21 safety recommendations that were made
:04:27. > :04:28.in the wake of the 11 men were killed when a Hawker
:04:29. > :04:32.Hunter jet crashed onto the A27 during a display at Shoreham airport
:04:33. > :04:35.in August 2015. Our transport correspondent

:05:36. > :05:37.this latest report. All 21 of those recommendations,
:05:38. > :05:43.they are now going to accept. There is just an issue of timing
:05:44. > :05:47.as to when they can be brought in, but in principle they are now
:05:48. > :05:49.being accepted and I think that is good news and shows
:05:50. > :05:52.that there has been some good work done by both the AAIB
:05:53. > :05:55.and the Civil Aviation Authority to make sure there are going to be
:05:56. > :05:58.changes to air displays in We are still waiting for the final
:05:59. > :06:03.report into the crash by air This will lay out exactly
:06:04. > :06:06.what happened and why. We expected it last year,
:06:07. > :06:09.but it has been delayed. The pilot of the Hunter,
:06:10. > :06:18.Andrew Hill, survived. The police are still
:06:19. > :06:20.considering whether to charge Only when that process has been
:06:21. > :06:28.completed can the inquest be held. It is quite likely that will not
:06:29. > :06:32.happen until next year. So the families involved
:06:33. > :06:34.will won't get a final verdict until perhaps three years
:06:35. > :06:44.after the crash. Poultry farmers in the South
:06:45. > :06:47.are waiting anxiously to find out if restrictions imposed
:06:48. > :06:49.because of bird flu will mean their eggs no longer
:06:50. > :06:53.have free range status. Flocks are currently being kept
:06:54. > :06:56.undercover to stop them having contact with wild birds who may be
:06:57. > :06:59.carrying the virus. Under EU regulations if birds
:07:00. > :07:02.are housed for more than 84 days, their eggs can no longer be
:07:03. > :07:06.called free range. We've done nothing wrong,
:07:07. > :07:10.the birds have done nothing wrong, so really, yeah, why shouldn't we be
:07:11. > :07:13.allowed to carry on selling our product as free range,
:07:14. > :07:15.because it's the Government that Football, and it's been
