:00:00. > :00:07.The top stories this evening:

:00:08. > :00:10.a crisis of confidence for Hampshire firefighters over computing chaos in

:00:11. > :00:14.An inquest hears of the last moments of a

:00:15. > :00:16.ten-year-old who died of a head injury from a shop display.

:00:17. > :00:19.And we meet Pepper the robot for a look

:00:20. > :00:36.The union which represents fire fighters in Hampshire says there's

:00:37. > :00:39.a "complete loss of confidence" in the new computer system

:00:40. > :00:41.at the heart of the county's control room operations.

:00:42. > :00:44.Last night we told you how faults had hit Dorset

:00:45. > :00:48.Today it's emerged Hampshire Fire Service,

:00:49. > :00:50.which uses the same system, also has technical problems.

:00:51. > :01:01.Capita created this promotional film about

:01:02. > :01:06.It is one of the most advanced on the market and it provides our

:01:07. > :01:13.firefighters with the most up-to-date information.

:01:14. > :01:16.Vision DS was a new computer system supposed to dispatch

:01:17. > :01:20.firefighters to the right place in the minimum time.

:01:21. > :01:23.But figures released after a Freedom of Information request

:01:24. > :01:29.In an industry where every second counts, sending the wrong appliance

:01:30. > :01:32.from the wrong area can add seconds may and may be minutes.

:01:33. > :01:35.So are lives being endangered by these problems?

:01:36. > :01:38.It is knocking the confidence of the firefighters because it is the

:01:39. > :01:45.supporting crews for those attending as well.

:01:46. > :01:48.Hampshire's Fire Brigade Union say the problems have led to a complete

:01:49. > :01:51.Our Control staff members, who are feeling very

:01:52. > :01:54.stressed at the moment, from day they are going in and

:01:55. > :01:57.instead of asking how are you to the other staff,

:01:58. > :01:59.they are asking how is

:02:00. > :02:03.The figures releaseed show that last year there were 16 days that

:02:04. > :02:15.In August the new server hit a particularly bad patch, going

:02:16. > :02:20.Even when the system didn't go down, there have been around 1500 glitches

:02:21. > :02:22.logged and nearly 60 of those still aren't fixed.

:02:23. > :02:23.Three neighbouring fire services worked together

:02:24. > :02:26.to procure the system - Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire

:02:27. > :02:49.They issued a joint statement saying...

:02:50. > :02:51.Normally we would rely on our resilience group

:02:52. > :02:54.within the region, that's Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, but

:02:55. > :02:57.unfortunately when it does crash, sometimes they crash with us and we

:02:58. > :03:03.Capita have told us the problems are only "intermittent"

:03:04. > :03:05.and they're working to resolve any issues.

:03:06. > :03:08.But for those at the sharp end, dealing with IT problems is one

:03:09. > :03:11.emergency they'd rather not be handling.

:03:12. > :03:17.More details emerged today about the death of a ten year

:03:18. > :03:19.old boy at a TopShop store in Reading.

:03:20. > :03:21.Kaden Reddick died from head injuries after

:03:22. > :03:28.Ben Moore was at the inquest and reports from Reading.

:03:32. > :03:33.the inquest into the tragic death of Kaden Reddick

:03:34. > :03:38.But in that time the court did hear evidence from

:03:39. > :03:40.Detective Inspector Dave Turton, who's leading the investigation

:03:41. > :03:46.He described how late afternoon on the 13th of February,

:03:47. > :03:50.Kaden was in the Topshop store in Reading's Oracle shopping

:03:51. > :03:52.centre with his siblings, his mother and his grandmother.

:03:53. > :03:56.Kaden was in the till area, near his mum, whilst

:03:57. > :04:00.she completed a transaction, when a queue barrier fell

:04:01. > :04:05.and hit him on the head, causing fatal injuries.

:04:06. > :04:07.Inspector Turton praised the Arcadia Group that owns

:04:08. > :04:15.He said there were in excess of 400 stores with similar barriers

:04:16. > :04:17.in the UK and abroad that were all closed until

:04:18. > :04:24.In adjourning the inquest the coroner Peter Bedford said he'd

:04:25. > :04:27.ordered a second postmortem so that Kaden's body could be

:04:28. > :04:31.released to the family for a funeral.

:04:32. > :04:33.He added that Kaden's family, who've described their ten-year-old

:04:34. > :04:38.as "loving, cheeky and energetic" were aware of today's

:04:39. > :04:40.hearing, but had gone away for a much-needed break.

:04:50. > :04:52.old daughter has told a jury he never struck or hurt her.

:04:53. > :04:54.20 year old Joshua Martin's baby died with injuries

:04:55. > :04:57.the prosecution say were consistent with being shaken.

:04:58. > :04:59.But Mr Martin says he wasn't responsible for them

:05:00. > :05:06.From Winchester Crown Court, Sean Killick reports.

:05:07. > :05:10.The prosecution claims seven-week-old baby Ezmai suffered

:05:11. > :05:14.a fatal head injury at her parents' flat above a parade of shops

:05:15. > :05:19.Ezmai died 24 hours later, after being transferred

:05:20. > :05:21.to a specialist unit at Saint George's

:05:22. > :05:27.She'd suffered a fractured skull and died from a brain injury.

:05:28. > :05:30.19-year-old roofer Joshua Martin is accused of killing his daughter.

:05:31. > :05:32.He acknowledged in court he did have a temper but said

:05:33. > :05:37.he could control it and denied ever striking his partner or baby.

:05:38. > :05:38.He said he'd discovered Ezmai looking pale,

:05:39. > :05:46.He tried to wind her and then carried out CPR.

:05:47. > :05:49.Defence barrister Richard Barraclough QC asked Joshua Martin

:05:50. > :05:52.if he had done anything which might have caused the baby's

:05:53. > :05:58."Did you drop her or hit her or do anything to her?"

:05:59. > :06:03."Can you think of any reason why Ezmai suffered that

:06:04. > :06:09.The lawyer then asked his final question, "Did you love Ezmai?"

:06:10. > :06:12.Mr Martin replied, "I did, very much."

:06:13. > :06:14.Joshua Martin denies a charge of murder.

:06:15. > :06:31.Now for a little look to our the future.

:06:32. > :06:34.Behind me is Pepper, and one day soon, robots like this

:06:35. > :06:36.could be greeting us all in hospitals, shops and schools.

:06:37. > :06:39.Pepper was built in Japan, but the brains behind

:06:40. > :06:41.its brain are much closer to home in Berkshire.

:06:42. > :06:43.Volume, the Wokingham company responsible for Pepper, specialises

:06:44. > :06:51.Joe Campbell went along to find out more.

:06:52. > :06:54.You don't get far through the front door here...

:06:55. > :06:57...before you realise this is a rather different world.

:06:58. > :07:07.Sara El-Hanfy will be with you shortly.

:07:08. > :07:11.Now, please take a seat, unless you would like to chat some more.

:07:12. > :07:13.The firm here is one of the leaders in artificial intelligence,

:07:14. > :07:16.so it's no surprise it's been chosen as a partner by the latest

:07:17. > :07:26.Standard domestic programme installed.

:07:27. > :07:29.This is the best thing you will do for your family.

:07:30. > :07:32.For now, science fact trails science fiction,

:07:33. > :07:37.as seen through the Channel 4 TV series Humans.

:07:38. > :07:39.Instantly, people think of things from sci-fi films

:07:40. > :07:41.or sci-fi literature, because it's been around

:07:42. > :07:44.for so long, but actually, it's not where we are at the minute.

:07:45. > :07:48.But the technology is moving all the time.

:07:49. > :07:53.I was born in Paris, but my heart is here in Wokingham.

:07:54. > :07:57.Oh, and my brain - the guys at Volume gave it to me.

:07:58. > :08:00.One of those people behind that brain is Paolo here.

:08:01. > :08:03.Basically we can monitor all the behaviour of the robot

:08:04. > :08:06.from the screens, so we can see what the robot can see,

:08:07. > :08:09.we can see the environment around the robot and how the robot's sensor

:08:10. > :08:13.recognises the environment around, because we need to create a build

:08:14. > :08:22.application to use the robot in a smarter way.

:08:23. > :08:25.The team here is working on the kind of artificial intelligence that may

:08:26. > :08:28.already control your home, and in future drive your car

:08:29. > :08:35.But it takes a human face for us to notice artificial

:08:36. > :08:45.I think what we're dealing with right now is that technology

:08:46. > :08:47.is growing exponentially, at such a rapid pace,

:08:48. > :08:49.our behaviours really can't keep pace with that.

:08:50. > :08:51.That's where some of the issues come in.

:08:52. > :08:54.And whether it's fear of what all this means for our jobs

:08:55. > :08:56.or simply for the future, it may just prove

:08:57. > :09:09.Gusts of between 50 and 60 miles per hour have been

:09:10. > :09:11.recorded in the South, thanks to Storm Doris.

:09:12. > :09:14.The driver of this van had a lucky escape narrowly missing this falling

:09:15. > :09:16.tree on Hanmore Road in Basingstoke this morning.

:09:17. > :09:19.The family of this house in Romsey were unhurt after a tree

:09:20. > :09:23.Numerous trees have also fallen, blocking some roads, such as here

:09:24. > :09:25.The stormy conditions caused delays to flights,

:09:26. > :09:28.with some due to land in Southampton diverted to Bournemouth.

:09:29. > :09:45.Trains and Cross Solent ferries were also disrupted.

:09:46. > :09:52.That's all from me. Let's get the weather.

:09:53. > :09:59.Storm Doris has moved away. There could be a touch of frost in the

:10:00. > :10:04.countryside. Some isolated showers, but most places will be dry.

:10:05. > :10:09.Temperatures in the countryside will drop to one Celsius. These are the

:10:10. > :10:13.temperatures in urban areas and the wind will ease. There could beat the

:10:14. > :10:19.odd isolated shower from northern and eastern areas, otherwise we will

:10:20. > :10:26.be looking at blue skies. Cloud will bubble up in the afternoon, turning

:10:27. > :10:29.the sunshine hazy. A light north-westerly breeze with highs of

:10:30. > :10:35.eight or nine Celsius. A lovely evening tomorrow evening, although

:10:36. > :10:39.tomorrow night there is a chance of patchy rain. Another band of rain is

:10:40. > :10:44.expected through Saturday evening, but before that, the wins will be

:10:45. > :10:48.brisk. They could be some patchy drizzle. Before this next weather

:10:49. > :10:55.system, a cold front will move in from the Atlantic. We continue to

:10:56. > :10:57.have the brisk south-westerly wind, so a lovely day tomorrow. The

:10:58. > :11:01.outside chance of a shower be much milder. I will leave you

:11:02. > :11:04.with Thomas Shelter.
