:00:28. > :00:31.Today the official report into what caused the tragedy was published.
:00:32. > :00:33.Experts from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch
:00:34. > :00:37.concluded the pilot, Andy Hill, was going too slowly
:00:38. > :00:43.He was also flying too low - at less than half the height
:00:44. > :00:47.He failed to notice both of these things.
:00:48. > :00:50.He told investigators he doesn't remember anything about the crash.

:00:58. > :01:00.The pilot, Andy Hill, was interviewed several times

:01:06. > :01:10.The Hawker Hunter, which was 60 years old, had flown
:01:11. > :01:14.It entered a loop at 185 feet when it should have been
:01:15. > :01:20.Investigators say maximum engine thrust was not maintained
:01:21. > :01:23.during the upward half of the manoeuvre.
:01:24. > :01:26.Instead of reaching 3500 feet to complete the manoeuvre safely,
:01:27. > :01:33.The report says the aircraft did not achieve sufficient height
:01:34. > :01:36.because the combination of entry speed and engine thrust
:01:37. > :01:42.The report says the pilot appears not to have recognised the aircraft
:01:43. > :01:45.was too low to complete the downward half of the manoeuvre
:01:46. > :01:50.The investigators say the pilot could have performed an escape
:01:51. > :01:55.manoeuvre but had not practised it in a Hawker Hunter aircraft.
:01:56. > :01:58.They also highlighted failings in the risk assessment
:01:59. > :02:04.Shoreham wasn't unique in that we found that was
:02:05. > :02:10.the case in other airshows around the country.
:02:11. > :02:13.A number of recommendations have been made on that area
:02:14. > :02:15.because we think that is a particularly important
:02:16. > :02:19.area in which the hazards of displaying these vintage
:02:20. > :02:22.high-performance aircraft are considered
:02:23. > :02:25.well in advance of the display so that the organisers consider
:02:26. > :02:29.what could go wrong, where it might go wrong
:02:30. > :02:33.and who might be affected by that, and if the risks are not
:02:34. > :02:36.sufficiently low, then appropriate controls are put in place
:02:37. > :02:40.The airshow organisers say they have always worked hard
:02:41. > :02:44.to ensure the event was safe but they will give further analysis
:02:45. > :02:49.The family of Mark Reeves, one of those who died,
:02:50. > :02:59.At the end of the day, often airshows affect much larger
:03:00. > :03:02.areas than just the premises, as here, the airshow took place over
:03:03. > :03:05.a busy road and that's where this crash happened,
:03:06. > :03:08.so I think CAA need to act on the recommendations
:03:09. > :03:13.There need to be stricter regulations and they
:03:14. > :03:17.An investigation by Sussex Police continues and a full inquest
:03:18. > :03:24.is still to be held, either later this year or next.
:03:25. > :03:28."A wholly avoidable accident which led to a wholly avoidable death."
:03:29. > :03:31.That's how a judge at Reading Crown Court described
:03:32. > :03:35.a crash caused by a driver using his mobile phone.
:03:36. > :03:39.24-year-old Lewis Stratford has been jailed for more than three years.
:03:40. > :03:42.He killed 28-year-old Gavin Roberts when he crashed through the central
:03:43. > :03:50.When Lewis Stratford walked into court this morning,
:03:51. > :03:56.If you use your phone, you'll end up like me.
:03:57. > :03:59.This final warning a stark reminder that this crime can cost you much
:04:00. > :04:03.more than six points and a ?200 fine.
:04:04. > :04:06.Stratford was speeding to Portsmouth to visit his girlfriend.
:04:07. > :04:10.He believed she was cheating on him and made a number of emotional phone
:04:11. > :04:17.During one of the calls his car crashed through the central
:04:18. > :04:20.reservation, hitting a blue BMW being driven by
:04:21. > :04:25.Both drivers were rushed to hospital.
:04:26. > :04:32.In court today Judge Stephen John told Stratford, "This was a wholly
:04:33. > :04:36.avoidable accident which caused a wholly avoidable death.
:04:37. > :04:41.Gavin's mother Rose was not in court today
:04:42. > :04:47.In it she said, "Lewis, you have my forgiveness and compassion.
:04:48. > :04:52.I know you did not mean to cause Gavin's death.
:04:53. > :04:54.Lewis, do not let this destroy and consume you.
:04:55. > :04:56.Instead, honour Gavin's memory by learning from this
:04:57. > :05:00.Gavin's girlfriend Meg also hopes to forgive Lewis.
:05:01. > :05:03.She met with him before sentencing to raise awareness
:05:04. > :05:06.of the dangers of using your phone behind the wheel.
:05:07. > :05:09.Every time I say sorry, I think it's a bit cheap.
