:00:00. > :00:08.Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:09. > :00:11.Good evening - I'm David Allard with the news in the south.

:00:12. > :00:15.It's an NHS Trust in trouble - and today its chief executive quit.

:00:16. > :00:19.Karen Baker is standing down as leader of the Isle

:00:20. > :00:22.of Wight NHS Trust - two weeks after concern

:00:23. > :00:25.was raised it could be put into special measures -

:00:26. > :00:28.and just days before the Care Quality Commission

:00:29. > :00:33.The Trust says Ms Baker won't be getting a severance payment.

:00:34. > :00:35.Earlier I asked our health correspondent David Fenton

:00:36. > :00:42.Well, it's clearly about the report that's due out in 12 days' time.

:00:43. > :00:45.She has seen it, I haven't, but I can tell you it's

:00:46. > :00:51.In fact, I think the Trust is going to get a bit of a slating.

:00:52. > :00:54.The CQC criticises hospitals and Trusts all the time and the chief

:00:55. > :00:59.When they do resign, that is where the leadership

:01:00. > :01:08.Now, we don't know if that's what the CQC are saying

:01:09. > :01:12.but Karen Baker seemed to allude to that in her resignation letter

:01:13. > :01:15.when she talked about the Trust needing a new pair of eyes to look

:01:16. > :01:23.What does this say about the state of health services on the island?

:01:24. > :01:27.Things have been pretty bad for a while here, actually.

:01:28. > :01:30.Back in December 2016, mental health services

:01:31. > :01:37.Then in January 2017, operations were cancelled from this

:01:38. > :01:41.hospital and many patients moved to the mainland.

:01:42. > :01:44.Just this March, an Improvement Director was put in to help

:01:45. > :01:52.We've been on the island today talking to patients

:01:53. > :01:55.about what they think of the services.

:01:56. > :01:58.I suffer from clinical depression and anxiety and borderline

:01:59. > :02:04.I have a complete and utter total lack of confidence.

:02:05. > :02:07.I know that there are problems everywhere in the NHS,

:02:08. > :02:10.but I think that they do a marvellous job.

:02:11. > :02:13.I can't criticise it at all, not for me and not for my family.

:02:14. > :02:16.I wouldn't choose to go to St Mary's.

:02:17. > :02:22.When I've been to the hospital, all the staff have been amazing.

:02:23. > :02:25.And the children's ward is just so lovely.

:02:26. > :02:30.I just think the staff are amazing. It's just the funding, maybe.

:02:31. > :02:34.One of the strange things about the island is that

:02:35. > :02:37.all of the health services here - the ambulance, the hospital,

:02:38. > :02:41.emergency department, mental health, community care -

:02:42. > :02:49.And the CQC has been in to look at every one of those areas.

:02:50. > :02:53.I think there could be something like 13 different reports coming out

:02:54. > :02:57.but I think it's going to be mental health services that they are really

:02:58. > :03:02.looking closely at and that come in for the most criticism.

:03:03. > :03:06.David Fenton in Newport, thank you very much.

:03:07. > :03:10.The pilot of a plane that ditched into the sea off Sussex yesterday

:03:11. > :03:14.says the engine cut out at an altitude of about 400 feet.

:03:15. > :03:18.Ian Perry swam to shore with his passenger, after the light

:03:19. > :03:21.aircraft came down shortly after take-off from

:03:22. > :03:25.Insurance assessors have been examining the plane today.

:03:26. > :03:28.A quarter of children are falling behind in their first year

:03:29. > :03:30.at school, because nurseries don't have enough qualified teachers.

:03:31. > :03:34.That's according to a study by Save the Children,

:03:35. > :03:36.who are calling on the Government to ensure all nurseries have

:03:37. > :03:40.qualified early years staff. But while parents welcome the idea -

:03:41. > :03:43.they're also concerned they'll be the ones to pay for it.

:03:44. > :03:50.Love, laughter and learning - that's the ethos behind

:03:51. > :03:56.The activities here are supported by qualified teachers to get

:03:57. > :04:00.a good start in key areas like maths and English.

:04:01. > :04:04.But a new report by Save the Children has revealed that

:04:05. > :04:06.generally, struggling toddlers aren't getting

:04:07. > :04:12.As a result, one in four is falling behind in the first year of school.

:04:13. > :04:15.I think it's very important for all our staff to

:04:16. > :04:18.have an underpinning knowledge of children's development

:04:19. > :04:22.so that they can tune in to children, but I think

:04:23. > :04:25.they need to have a holistic approach.

:04:26. > :04:29.What's most important for children is for them to have warm,

:04:30. > :04:32.affirming relationships with their carers and teachers.

:04:33. > :04:35.A quarter of parents surveyed said they were worried their child would

:04:36. > :04:42.Half were concerned about sending their child to nursery

:04:43. > :04:46.without a qualified teacher and three quarters believed

:04:47. > :04:49.it was the government's responsibility to ensure

:04:50. > :04:53.there were teachers in all nurseries.

:04:54. > :04:56.But that would require a major recruitment drive to find another

:04:57. > :05:00.3,200 nursery teachers across our region.

:05:01. > :05:03.The shortage is being blamed on the fact nurseries are already

:05:04. > :05:06.struggling with recruitment costs and other funding pressures,

:05:07. > :05:09.so those likely to foot the bill are the parents.

:05:10. > :05:12.I think they're highly qualified as it is and they take really good

:05:13. > :05:17.I've got two children in nursery at the moment.

:05:18. > :05:21.But I do pay a lot of money, so if we have more qualified people

:05:22. > :05:23.in nursery settings, would that put up the price

:05:24. > :05:26.and would I be happy to pay for it? I'm not sure.

:05:27. > :05:28.Dr Jo Blanden from Portsmouth recently published a study that

:05:29. > :05:32.found children with access to teachers only performed slightly

:05:33. > :05:39.Our point is that they're really quite small -

:05:40. > :05:42.the effects you find in these types of studies compared to the other

:05:43. > :05:44.kinds of differences between children, say,

:05:45. > :05:46.between rich and poor children. These effects are very small.

:05:47. > :05:49.When it comes to learning, all the studies conclude

:05:50. > :05:52.that the early years are the most important and that everyone involved

:05:53. > :06:01.When you've got a job you love, it's hard to give it up.

:06:02. > :06:04.Which is why 93-year-old hairdresser Kathleen Privett from Portsmouth

:06:05. > :06:08.has put off that moment - until today.

:06:09. > :06:10.After an incredible 72 years in the family salon,

:06:11. > :06:14.Kathleen's finally hanging up her scissors.

:06:15. > :06:20.It isn't just like ordinary business, if someone comes

:06:21. > :06:24.in and buys something and goes out, it's a much more personal

:06:25. > :06:28.contact than that. I shall miss it.

:06:29. > :06:32.And of course we wish Kathleen a long and happy retirement.

:06:33. > :06:39.Now Sam's here with the weather - do you still fancy forecasting at 93?

:06:40. > :06:47.I call that Executive youth! April arrives tomorrow and we did some

:06:48. > :06:52.traditional April fair. Some cloudy skies and showers as we go through

:06:53. > :06:56.tonight. Over the coming hours, we will CDs showers moving in from the

:06:57. > :07:02.south west. Some places remaining dry but under the cloudy skies, damp

:07:03. > :07:06.conditions and eight Celsius. Tomorrow, we keep those showers but

:07:07. > :07:09.also some bright spells and the showers will become more widespread

:07:10. > :07:15.as we go through the day. They could be heavy and there could be some

:07:16. > :07:20.thunder and hail. In the brightness, 14 Celsius is the top temperature.

:07:21. > :07:24.Sunday, high pressure building so a more settled day and some good sunny

:07:25. > :07:28.spells. It will feel pleasant. Looking ahead to the start of the

:07:29. > :07:32.week, high pressure with us for Monday, sunny spells to enjoy.

:07:33. > :07:36.Coming next, the national weather forecast.

:07:37. > :07:44.Hello. There the weekend is here and Sunday looks like being the better

:07:45. > :07:47.day of the two. We're going to start the weekend, a new month, with

:07:48. > :07:52.sunshine and April showers. Those fade away overnight. Saturday night

:07:53. > :07:57.could be chilly. It points to a fine day on Sunday. This picture was

:07:58. > :07:58.taken by a weather watcher to end the day in Dundee. This one
