:00:08. > :00:15.I'm David Allard with the news in the South.

:00:16. > :00:18.There were trips along the M4 today for both the Prime Minister,

:00:19. > :00:20.Theresa May, and the Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn,

:00:21. > :00:22.as the South became the battleground for the opening shots

:00:23. > :00:26.And one of the main issues of the day was not

:00:27. > :00:32.Here's our political editor Peter Henley.

:00:33. > :00:34.Inside a toothpaste factory in Maidenhead, staff waiting to ask

:00:35. > :00:46.Outside, a man in a chicken suit, sent by a newspaper.

:00:47. > :00:48.And so the traditional fabric of election campaigning

:00:49. > :00:53.Compared to David Cameron, Theresa May was less polished,

:00:54. > :00:56.But genuine questions were asked and answered,

:00:57. > :00:59.on the high cost of housing in the Thames Valley, student fees,

:01:00. > :01:02.apprenticeships and there was an EU national keen to continue

:01:03. > :01:10.How can you reassure me that my life is not going to change after Brexit?

:01:11. > :01:13.I see, as I sit around that table, I see a lot

:01:14. > :01:16.And people wanting to give that reassurance.

:01:17. > :01:20.And I hope we'll be able to do that at an early stage.

:01:21. > :01:22.These apprentices, voting for the first time, hadn't seen

:01:23. > :01:32.It's more real, and I think it's more engaging.

:01:33. > :01:37.To hear her without that background noise was great as well.

:01:38. > :01:40.Meanwhile, 50 miles down the road, the Labour leader

:01:41. > :01:43.was at Swindon Central Community Centre.

:01:44. > :01:46.Not quite the same cavalcade of cars.

:01:47. > :01:50.We're 72 hours into this election campaign.

:01:51. > :01:53.We're 72 hours into the opportunity of our lifetime to challenge

:01:54. > :01:59.the inequality and injustice that exists in Britain today.

:02:00. > :02:01.The audience, more fired up than in Maidenhead,

:02:02. > :02:11.If you could do something for us, that would be great.

:02:12. > :02:16.A pledge from Jeremy Corbyn today to reduce class sizes.

:02:17. > :02:20.And Theresa May was at Cox Green School,

:02:21. > :02:24.where the headteacher let her sixth formers do the talking.

:02:25. > :02:25.Expect more promises, more speeches, more visits.

:02:26. > :02:36.And neither side should count their chickens.

:02:37. > :02:42.As far as we know, the cars didn't pass on the M4, but just six

:02:43. > :02:47.junctions apart, but miles apart in terms of leadership style and

:02:48. > :02:50.general election policy. It is the shape of things to come.

:02:51. > :02:54.Next, a new report into the death of an SAS reservist from Winchester

:02:55. > :02:56.during a training exercise has concluded it could happen again.

:02:57. > :02:58.Lance Corporal Edward Maher, seen in the middle here,

:02:59. > :03:01.died of heat exhaustion alongside Lance Corporal Craig Roberts

:03:02. > :03:03.and Corporal James Dunsby, on a 16-mile march in the Brecon

:03:04. > :03:07.The report commissioned by the Ministry of Defence

:03:08. > :03:08.found there were failures at multiple levels.

:03:09. > :03:15.The MoD says it is now addressing recommendations in the report.

:03:16. > :03:17.It's been revealed that emergency admissions to hospital

:03:18. > :03:18.for stroke sufferers, have increased by 30%

:03:19. > :03:23.But despite this specialist care, just as many people are dying

:03:24. > :03:29.from the condition now as ten years ago.

:03:30. > :03:31.More people are aware of the warning signs,

:03:32. > :03:37.but the British Heart Foundation called today for more research.

:03:38. > :03:39.In the South West, almost 120,000 people are living

:03:40. > :03:43.In the South East, it's more than 150,000.

:03:44. > :03:47.It's commonly thought of as a condition for older people.

:03:48. > :03:51.But, in the UK, a quarter of strokes happen to people under 55.

:03:52. > :03:57.Lewis Coombes has the story of how it's affected one young couple.

:03:58. > :03:59.Today is a day you'll always remember, the greatest

:04:00. > :04:02.You'll start of the day just two people in love,

:04:03. > :04:14.Words spoken at Russell and Rachel's wedding two and a half years ago.

:04:15. > :04:17.The happiest of days, with no clue of what was soon to come.

:04:18. > :04:20.Just weeks later, at the age of 35, Russell was hospitalised

:04:21. > :04:24.He would no longer be able to tell his wife he loves her.

:04:25. > :04:47.Unable to speak or write, Russell had to leave his job,

:04:48. > :04:49.while at home rely on the support of Rachel.

:04:50. > :04:59.If I say a word or Russell hears a word, then he will generally

:05:00. > :05:02.repeat it, but trying to find that word to say is what

:05:03. > :05:07.So we have just kind of adapted, and this is our life now, you know?

:05:08. > :05:13.It's very different to how we thought it was going to be.

:05:14. > :05:16.Around a quarter of strokes happen to people under 55.

:05:17. > :05:20.No treatment currently exists to bring back Russell's voice.

:05:21. > :05:22.The British Heart Foundation is campaigning for more

:05:23. > :05:30.We might then be able to develop drugs which will reduce

:05:31. > :05:33.the amount of brain damage, and if we do that, we will reduce

:05:34. > :05:36.the amount of disability that the person has to sadly live

:05:37. > :05:42.Extra research into that to develop something would be great.

:05:43. > :05:50.All your hopes and your dreams can be real.

:05:51. > :05:52.May success find its way in your hearts.

:05:53. > :05:54.Tomorrow can bring you the greatest joy but today

:05:55. > :06:00.And there's more information on the British Heart Foundation website.

:06:01. > :06:02.On to football, and Brighton were hoping to secure

:06:03. > :06:06.the Championship title tonight at Norwich.

:06:07. > :06:08.But Seagulls keeper David Stockdale had a complete mare,

:06:09. > :06:11.conceding two own goals - the first off this shot

:06:12. > :06:16.And just before half time, the same thing happened.

:06:17. > :06:20.Another deflection off the woodwork and off Stockdale into the net.

:06:21. > :06:22.The earliest Brighton could now be confirmed

:06:23. > :06:24.as Champions is Monday, if Newcastle lose their

:06:25. > :06:30.That's all from the South Today news team this evening.

:06:31. > :06:32.We're back tomorrow at 4:40, and there's more

:06:33. > :06:40.Now Sarah's here with our regional weather forecast.

:06:41. > :06:47.We do have quite a bit of cloud through the course of this evening,

:06:48. > :06:51.much like we had today. There will be a few holes in the cloud, most of

:06:52. > :06:54.us staying dry, but as we head towards dawn, the northern fringes

:06:55. > :07:00.seeing a few spots of rain. Generally temperatures at eight or

:07:01. > :07:03.nine Celsius, but where we see clear spells, temperatures could fall a

:07:04. > :07:07.little further. Any dampness will ease away through the course of the

:07:08. > :07:12.morning, and much of the region will see a dry day. Some brightness

:07:13. > :07:18.developing through the morning and into the afternoon, some sunny skies

:07:19. > :07:21.opening up. Temperatures up to around 14 or 15 degrees, but a

:07:22. > :07:25.chilly night to come, and into Sunday it looks like we will see a

:07:26. > :07:30.touch of grass frost in some spots first thing. They weather front

:07:31. > :07:32.pushing through on Monday with some rain, then much cooler conditions

:07:33. > :07:36.through marathon. Here is the outlook for

:07:37. > :07:37.the weather for the next few days and Helen Willetts has the National

:07:38. > :07:51.forecast. While unusual to see snow in May, it

:07:52. > :07:55.will be a shock to the system. We've seen some interesting contrast. 19

:07:56. > :07:59.degrees cost is in Scotland in the sunshine today. In the sunshine only

:08:00. > :08:05.11. The differences we are behind a cold weather front. Seeing a stepped

:08:06. > :08:10.down in temperatures. The cold air filtering sound so there will be a

:08:11. > :08:13.widespread ground frost across the country. The week weather front

:08:14. > :08:20.still with us so we could cheat patchy mist and fog. The best chance

:08:21. > :08:24.of seeing the meteor shower overnight will be in those clear

:08:25. > :08:28.skies further north. A better chance for south overnight. We start

:08:29. > :08:30.Saturday morning with the line of cloud, the weather front from

:08:31. > :08:34.Northern Ireland through Wales, the Midlands coming the south-east. The

:08:35. > :08:39.clear air following the weather front. Slow to weaken and showers

:08:40. > :08:41.may follow. It's likely we'll get good spells of
