:00:52. > :00:54.of young gay women on a night out in Portsmouth in what's believed
:00:55. > :00:56.to have been a violent Today, there was concern
:00:57. > :01:01.and bitterness among some of the victims that the police
:01:02. > :01:04.were not doing enough Bruises, black eyes,
:01:05. > :01:12.teeth knocked out. In total, five women were hurt
:01:13. > :01:15.as they made their way home along They were repeatedly punched
:01:16. > :01:20.and kicked by a group The woman whose teeth were knocked
:01:21. > :01:26.out is amongst the victims Before I even got to turn round,
:01:27. > :01:36.I was hit and in that hit, I remember I could feel something
:01:37. > :01:42.had moved in my mouth, but at that point, I didn't
:01:43. > :01:45.know it was my teeth. I was just crying and
:01:46. > :01:50.screaming frantically. The victims think the men
:01:51. > :01:53.who attacked them were Polish and believe they were targeted
:01:54. > :01:57.because they are lesbians. They say they are upset
:01:58. > :01:59.with the way Hampshire Police I don't think they
:02:00. > :02:04.handled it well at all. We were telling the police

:02:15. > :02:21.and check if I was OK. We had no photos taken
:02:22. > :02:23.of the injuries. I've been groped and grabbed
:02:24. > :02:26.as well as the other girls. We should have had
:02:27. > :02:28.a female officer there. Hampshire Police say an ambulance
:02:29. > :02:31.was requested by officers as soon as they arrived at the scene
:02:32. > :02:34.in Kingston Road. The police have also

:03:16. > :03:18.Recent Government figures show that the number of recorded

:03:24. > :03:32.At the same time, research by one gay charity showed that half
:03:33. > :03:34.of those who reported hate crime said they did not feel
:03:35. > :03:39.Earlier, I spoke to Benjamin Butterwortth who is a reporter

:03:42. > :03:44.He's also been a victim of hate crime and reported it to the police.
:03:45. > :03:52.He told me incidents like the one in Portsmouth are not uncommon.
:03:53. > :03:59.Four in five LGBT people say they have experienced a hate crime at
:04:00. > :04:03.some point in their lives. That could be anything from someone
:04:04. > :04:06.shouting an insult at them in the street, right through to the tragic
:04:07. > :04:09.aggressive insult we have seen in this incident. What is more
:04:10. > :04:16.concerning is how many of those people don't report it. It is
:04:17. > :04:20.thought the majority of LGBT people who experienced hate crime don't
:04:21. > :04:23.follow it up and tell the police. We have seen with these ladies in
:04:24. > :04:27.particular they were upset with how they were treated by the police.
:04:28. > :04:36.Other issues with police training? One of the key things we find is
:04:37. > :04:40.that about 40% of cases, the LGBT people feel the police and the
:04:41. > :04:46.authorities who they dealt with were not properly trained in LGBT issues.
:04:47. > :04:51.That can be anything from asking people to prove they are LGBT in an
:04:52. > :04:55.unreasonable way, making assumptions about people that make them feel
:04:56. > :04:59.uncomfortable, and that is one of the biggest issues. A whole number,
:05:00. > :05:02.about a quarter of people who have reported a hate crime before said
:05:03. > :05:07.they wouldn't feel comfortable doing it again. I do think police forces
:05:08. > :05:09.have to do -- look at carefully how they provide training for this
:05:10. > :05:11.issue. You deserve to feel shameful
:05:12. > :05:14.for what you have done - the words of a crown court judge
:05:15. > :05:17.today as he sentenced a hospice finance manager
:05:18. > :05:19.for stealing thousands of pounds Simon Plummer was given an 18-month
:05:20. > :05:23.suspended sentence and ordered to do 300 hours of unpaid work for taking
:05:24. > :05:26.the money from Oakhaven He used it to fund building work
:05:27. > :05:31.on his own house in Sway. He was trusted to take care
:05:32. > :05:38.of the money at a place What do you say to the staff
:05:39. > :05:43.and patients at the hospice? But Simon Plummer abused his
:05:44. > :05:47.position to steal more than ?13,000. Southampton Crown Court heard that
:05:48. > :05:54.between November 2015 and August 2016, Mr Plummer had diverted cash
:05:55. > :05:58.and cheque donations from being paid Instead, he used the money to cover
:05:59. > :06:04.the cost of building materials The fraud was uncovered
:06:05. > :06:09.when the building company Travis Perkins began sending
:06:10. > :06:13.invoices to the hospice. After an internal inquiry,
:06:14. > :06:15.Mr Plummer was dismissed from Oakhaven and the police
:06:16. > :06:18.were informed. In court, he pleaded guilty to fraud
:06:19. > :06:21.by abuse of position. Taking that into account,
:06:22. > :06:26.Judge Francis Burrell gave Mr Plummer an 18-month suspended
:06:27. > :06:41.sentence and told him... No-one from Oakhaven
:06:42. > :06:43.wanted to appear on camera "This has been a very sad
:06:44. > :06:51.and difficult period for us "We have in place a strong set
:06:52. > :06:54.of financial procedures "so the public and all our
:06:55. > :06:57.supporters can be assured that "fundraised income and donations
:06:58. > :06:59.are safe and secure." And maintaining that goodwill
:07:00. > :07:08.from the public is crucial. Mr Plummer has written
:07:09. > :07:11.to staff at the hospice expressing his remorse,
:07:12. > :07:13.but declined to comment It's been described as a ticking
:07:14. > :07:17.time bomb inside our care system. A new report published
:07:18. > :07:19.by Healthwatch in West Berkshire reveals the failure of many councils
:07:20. > :07:22.to put adequate plans in place to look after vulnerable people
:07:23. > :07:24.with learning difficulties when their carers can no
:07:25. > :07:26.longer look after them. As Nikki Mitchell reports,
:07:27. > :07:29.many parents are terrified about what will happen
:07:30. > :07:32.to their children, Severe autism means Nathanial
:07:33. > :07:40.is more like a two-year-old He's a big baby and he's lovely,
:07:41. > :07:47.but we've had a toddler for 18 years But what about the next 18 years
:07:48. > :07:54.and the 18 years after that? Our social care system has neither
:07:55. > :07:58.the time or the money to plan for what should happen when parents
:07:59. > :08:02.and carers can care no longer. If I suddenly had to go
:08:03. > :08:09.into hospital long-term or God We need an action committee
:08:10. > :08:11.formed of key professionals, the voluntary sector,
:08:12. > :08:13.the parents and carers, to actually look at potential
:08:14. > :08:15.solutions, and who knows, perhaps This is a national problem,
:08:16. > :08:26.it's not just West Berkshire. The plain fact is that there
:08:27. > :08:28.is less accommodation than the number of people
:08:29. > :08:31.we would like to provide for it. And, therefore, perhaps we do
:08:32. > :08:34.step in rather later than some The distress, for me,
:08:35. > :08:38.would be acute, not knowing where he was, was he
:08:39. > :08:41.safe, was he happy? Finally from me, in football,
:08:42. > :08:50.Brighton must wait to see if their promotion to
:08:51. > :08:52.the Premier League They needed Newcastle
:08:53. > :08:55.to lose to Preston tonight, Nevertheless, Brighton can still win
:08:56. > :08:58.the title this weekend. That's all from the South Today
:08:59. > :09:15.news team this evening. The weather for the week ahead, we
:09:16. > :09:19.have some Arctic air coming our way for the next couple of days and then
:09:20. > :09:24.we see a bit of a turn, back to the milder conditions. In the meantime,
:09:25. > :09:30.one or two wintry showers. Tonight, clear skies overhead and with the
:09:31. > :09:35.cool air mass, temperatures will tumble down to freezing in most
:09:36. > :09:40.spots, a touch below in rural areas. Widespread frost tomorrow morning
:09:41. > :09:44.but had brightness, sunny skies through the cause in the morning,
:09:45. > :09:51.the cloud bubbling up and one or two showers as well. The temperatures
:09:52. > :09:55.could nudge up to 11 or 12 degrees. Through the latter part of tomorrow

:10:09. > :10:15.away and once again clearing skies and temperatures around freezing.
:10:16. > :10:19.Into Wednesday, a frosty start, again some brightness to get the day
:10:20. > :10:23.going but the showers start to shop earlier in the day. Once more, the

:10:29. > :10:34.showers, the winds pick up as well. Feeling cool as the showers pass
:10:35. > :10:39.through. Thursday, we will see a bit of a change, milder conditions on
:10:40. > :10:47.the way, the fund is sinking southwards, that will bring more
:10:48. > :10:55.cloud and outbreaks of rain. A cloudy pig show on Friday. One odd

:11:02. > :11:02.theme. We could still see one or two spells of rain.
:11:03. > :11:04.course, there'll be the threat of some rain. More with the national
:11:05. > :11:11.forecast now. Good evening. It's been turning
