:00:11. > :00:15.The alleged plot to rob and harm a local celebrity. Two men appear in

:00:15. > :00:18.court. Good evening. We'll hear more about

:00:18. > :00:21.the case surrounding singer Joss Stone in a moment.

:00:22. > :00:24.Also tonight: seven months on and still living with the damage. The

:00:24. > :00:33.Cornish communities battling to reclaim their homes after the

:00:33. > :00:38.floods. You're left with nothing and

:00:38. > :00:41.insurance probably are not as empathetic as they should be. It is

:00:41. > :00:45.a big deal losing everything in a heartbeat.

:00:45. > :00:48.And a picture from the past to help build the future. Plans to recreate

:00:48. > :00:51.one of the oldest places of worship in Britain move a step closer.

:00:51. > :00:55.Two men have been remanded in custody, charged with an alleged

:00:55. > :00:58.plot to attack and rob the Devon celebrity soul singer, Joss Stone.

:00:58. > :01:02.Police seized weapons and maps indicating the location of her home

:01:02. > :01:09.from a car after a tip off from the public. Simon Hall was at today's

:01:09. > :01:13.hearing at Exeter Magistrates Court. The uncovering of the alleged plot

:01:13. > :01:17.to attack and rob Joss Stone at her rural home in east Devon led to the

:01:17. > :01:20.launching of a major police operation. A car was found,

:01:20. > :01:25.containing maps of the area around her house, swords, knives and

:01:25. > :01:28.balaclavas. Today, two men - Junior Bradshaw, who's 30, and Kevin

:01:28. > :01:34.Liverpool, who's 33 - appeared in court charged with conspiracy to

:01:34. > :01:43.commit grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to rob. Both are from

:01:43. > :01:48.Manchester. Court number of one here at Exeter magistrates was busy

:01:48. > :01:53.with journalists. In a hearing which lasted for 45 minutes the

:01:54. > :02:01.case against the two men was applied. Both spoke only to confirm

:02:01. > :02:05.their names, addresses and dates of birth. Joss Stone has become an

:02:05. > :02:12.international star and one of Britain's highest earning young

:02:12. > :02:15.performers, said be rowed are worth 9 million. She's told her fans

:02:15. > :02:22.she's fine and is carrying on with life. That includes preparations

:02:22. > :02:26.for a European tour, due to begin next month. The men were told the

:02:26. > :02:32.charges against him was so serious that they could only be dealt with

:02:32. > :02:37.by a Crown Court. They are due to appear before Exeter Crown Court

:02:37. > :02:40.for a preliminary hearing on Friday July 1st or stop Some residents

:02:40. > :02:44.whose homes were severely damaged by flooding seven months ago say

:02:44. > :02:47.they feel let down. The flash floods in mid Cornwall last

:02:47. > :02:49.November affected more than 200 homes and 400 businesses. Although

:02:49. > :02:52.many people have now returned to their properties, others say

:02:52. > :02:56.they've had to battle with insurance companies. Louise Walter

:02:56. > :03:00.has been to see them. 17th November 2010. The start of a

:03:00. > :03:10.nightmare for many communities in Mid Cornwall. Seven months on, some

:03:10. > :03:11.

:03:11. > :03:16.people are still in it. This is Debbie Evan's living room, today.

:03:16. > :03:23.Well, everything, the whole place has had to be gutted. We have had

:03:23. > :03:33.no power, no heating, no floors, no ceilings, those stairs. So, quite a

:03:33. > :03:34.

:03:34. > :03:37.lot. This is a JCB in my front room. Debbie is a single mother and

:03:37. > :03:43.throughout all this work she and her autistic children have been

:03:43. > :03:46.living here. She says the work's taken longer because she's had to

:03:46. > :03:55.battle with her insurance company, and ended up emplying her own loss

:03:55. > :04:00.adjustor. It has been worth every East set can because it has taken

:04:00. > :04:03.the pressure off me because they Halifax have not been the most

:04:03. > :04:07.helpful insurance company in the world. The Halifax have agreed to

:04:07. > :04:09.pay for the work, and say they are working closely with the

:04:09. > :04:16.independent assessor. But in general Debbie says there's not

:04:16. > :04:20.been the help there she's expected. People are interested when it first

:04:20. > :04:23.happened but once the water has gone, nobody is really interested.

:04:23. > :04:27.Looking anxiously at the rain is Carl Farlowe. He was lucky enough

:04:27. > :04:34.to be back in his house after three months. In his cul-de-sac they've

:04:34. > :04:38.taken the initiative in flood prevention. We have replaced the

:04:38. > :04:42.train across Verona but to train in the corner. You have paid for the

:04:42. > :04:49.share cells. Yes, we have. Like Debbie, he feels promises made at

:04:50. > :04:54.the time have not been followed through. They come and get all

:04:54. > :05:00.publicity and off they go. There is still help available for those

:05:00. > :05:06.affected by the floods. The divinity fund says it still has

:05:06. > :05:11.7,000. Next week they will peak an event to help Trinity's be prepared

:05:11. > :05:14.sure of the worst ever happen again. -- communities. A police officer

:05:14. > :05:17.from Devon has been cleared of trying to falsely claim

:05:17. > :05:20.compensation after being injured while arresting a suspect. A jury

:05:20. > :05:23.at Exeter Crown Court found 41- year-old PC Anthony Cross not

:05:23. > :05:26.guilty of fraud following the incident in Barnstaple last year.

:05:26. > :05:31.The jury is still considering a second charge of perverting the

:05:31. > :05:35.course of justice following the same incident.

:05:35. > :05:38.People are being told not to swim off parts of Dawlish Town Beach

:05:38. > :05:41.after the water there failed bathing quality tests. The

:05:41. > :05:50.Environment Agency has been carrying out further tests today.

:05:50. > :05:56.Adrian Campbell is at the beach for us now.

:05:56. > :05:59.It has been quiet on the beach at Dawlish today. People had been

:06:00. > :06:06.concerned to see red flags and notices on the beach warning about

:06:06. > :06:10.possible problems with bathing water quality standards. A lovely

:06:10. > :06:13.day on Dawlish Town Beach. But unfortunately, the recent spell of

:06:13. > :06:17.heavy showers has caused the problem and Teignbridge District

:06:17. > :06:21.Council says this small section of beach has failed a routine

:06:21. > :06:27.Environment Agency test to ensure the water meets all the necessary

:06:27. > :06:32.quality standards for swimming. did a sample test on Sunday, we do

:06:32. > :06:41.care so pretend to 14 days as a regular occurrence with Environment

:06:41. > :06:46.Agency. The test on Sunday, we think with heavy rainfall, has

:06:46. > :06:54.caused a slight record of a pollutant. What we have done is

:06:54. > :06:58.bathers temporarily not to bathe in the water. Today there were hopes

:06:58. > :07:03.that the affected area close to the railway station could soon be

:07:03. > :07:07.declared -- declared completely clear. The Environment Agency has

:07:07. > :07:12.taken follow-up samples and the results should be known tomorrow.

:07:12. > :07:16.Visitors were surprised to know about the news. I love this place,

:07:16. > :07:21.and come back for another visit. have come down from the Midlands

:07:21. > :07:26.and I always thought down here was clean and spot was. It is quite

:07:26. > :07:32.surprising. If I had children with me, after reading this site, I

:07:32. > :07:35.would be a bit wary. South West Water told us that they have come

:07:35. > :07:40.to clear a blockage close to the beach today but they are stressing

:07:41. > :07:44.this has nothing whatsoever to do with the sample taken on Sunday.

:07:44. > :07:50.Teignbridge District Council says the sign it will remain in place

:07:50. > :07:53.until the next water sample result passes the necessary standards. No

:07:53. > :07:58.one from South West Water has been available for interview but they

:07:58. > :08:03.did say that the problems can relate to recent storms. They said

:08:03. > :08:07.next week they are going to begin an online trial. They will be put

:08:07. > :08:11.information on their website giving people the latest information about

:08:11. > :08:14.possible overflows on the system. The Government is facing calls from

:08:14. > :08:17.its own backbenches to take more radical action to bring fuel prices

:08:17. > :08:26.down. Our political editor, Martyn Oates, joins us now. What is the

:08:26. > :08:30.Government now being asked to do? This emerge from the debate tabled

:08:30. > :08:35.by the Conservative MP for Harlow in Essex. He said they should not

:08:35. > :08:40.be any more fuel duty increases for the rest of Parliament. He says

:08:40. > :08:44.when the price of oil comes down, the fuel company should be given a

:08:44. > :08:47.clear choice to bring down the price for motorists for the

:08:47. > :08:51.government would threaten them on the windfall tax for their profits.

:08:51. > :08:56.This is one of the real bugbears for people, that when the basic

:08:56. > :09:00.price of oil comes down, the price of the punt does not seem to follow

:09:00. > :09:04.suit. He says the government should create a commission to look into

:09:04. > :09:08.why this happens and also to look at possible alternatives.

:09:08. > :09:12.government is already working on a scheme to bring down fuel prices in

:09:12. > :09:18.rural areas. This is the so-called rural fuel rebate, which monitors

:09:19. > :09:24.have been talking there since the election. This could cut 5p a litre

:09:25. > :09:28.from fuel bills in rural areas. The government wants to trial it in

:09:28. > :09:33.remote island off the coast of Scotland and down here in the Isles

:09:33. > :09:37.of Scilly. But it is a slow-burning project because to go ahead with

:09:37. > :09:41.the pilot itself, the government needs permission from the EU, which

:09:41. > :09:47.it is waiting for. 26 towns have entered a competition

:09:47. > :09:50.to be granted city status - two of them in the South West. St Austell

:09:50. > :09:54.in Cornwall and Dorchester in Dorset have both entered. The Queen

:09:54. > :09:57.will grant city status to one of them as part of celebrations for

:09:57. > :10:00.her Diamond Jubilee. The result will be announced next year.

:10:00. > :10:04.People are being asked not to visit patients in Torbay and South Devon,

:10:04. > :10:07.to help prevent the spread of norovirus. Torbay Care Trust says

:10:07. > :10:10.three wards in Torbay Hospital have been affected by the bug. Paignton

:10:10. > :10:18.Community Hosiptal, and one ward at Newton Abbot Community Hospital

:10:18. > :10:21.have been closed to new admissions. Hundreds of patients in Devon and

:10:21. > :10:24.Cornwall will benefit from a new 3D heart scanner which is now being

:10:24. > :10:27.used at Plymouth's Derriford hospital. The 100,000 scanner

:10:27. > :10:30.gives surgeons a window into the heart to see what's wrong and where

:10:30. > :10:35.they need to make repairs. John Henderson was in theatre this

:10:35. > :10:43.morning to see the scanner at work. This is a 3D colour image of a

:10:43. > :10:48.heart. But it's a heart that's not working properly. This is the area

:10:48. > :10:55.of the Gulf which simply should not becoming a bath that area. This

:10:55. > :11:01.really is, for the first time, an ability to watch the valve in

:11:01. > :11:05.action, right now, and show us what the problem really is. The 3D image

:11:05. > :11:14.show's David Allen's heart. The 55- year-old Devonport dockyard worker

:11:14. > :11:17.hasn't been well for some time. Uncomfortable Sundays and Sunday is

:11:17. > :11:22.not to put. I get and there will be short of breath, depends what kind

:11:22. > :11:28.of manual work I am to in. And I also want to improve my life if I

:11:28. > :11:34.can. So today's he having surgery, but first he needs a scan. And this

:11:34. > :11:37.is where the new 3D echo machine comes in. Bought by the British

:11:37. > :11:43.Heart Foundation and HeartSwell South West charities for 100,000,

:11:43. > :11:47.it offers surgeons at Derriford instant and much improved diagnoses.

:11:47. > :11:52.These are amazing pictures which are giving me an idea that I would

:11:53. > :11:56.never have previously been able to see before. This will be at big

:11:56. > :12:00.advantage to our practice and hoppers to develop further our

:12:00. > :12:05.techniques for repair and help patients in the longer term. They

:12:05. > :12:09.have done the scan and it has gone very well and now they are about to

:12:09. > :12:13.start surgery. David, then, the first of many in the South West to

:12:13. > :12:17.benefit from the latest technology at Derriford.

:12:17. > :12:19.Coming up; the plans to excavate one of the oldest Christian

:12:19. > :12:29.buildings in mainland Britain. Plus, find out how this 150-year-old

:12:29. > :12:32.Brunel tunnel is getting a new lease of life.

:12:42. > :12:49.

:12:49. > :12:54.A plan to excavate an ancient chapel in Cornwall is a step closer

:12:54. > :12:58.thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. St appearance of a

:12:58. > :13:02.tree at Perranporth is believed to be the oldest Christian building on

:13:02. > :13:09.mainland Britain. It marks the site where Cornwall's saint built his

:13:10. > :13:15.first place of worship around 1400 years ago.

:13:15. > :13:23.St Piran's Oratory is a place of pilgrimage and celebration. Every

:13:23. > :13:27.year on March 5th, St Piran so -- St Piran's day, enthusiastss make

:13:27. > :13:35.their way across the sand dune, or towans, but when they arrive, there

:13:35. > :13:40.is not much to see. To the side is the priest's house. In front of us

:13:40. > :13:50.is the Oratory and that is it. These photographs from around 1900

:13:50. > :13:54.

:13:54. > :13:55.show the small chapel surrounded by iron railings. Later, one of the

:13:55. > :14:00.first reinforced concrete structures in the south-west was

:14:00. > :14:05.built to protect what remained of fog was known as the lost church.

:14:05. > :14:09.Years later, the concrete casing was described as a monstrosity and

:14:09. > :14:15.fears that it could collapse or a reported on Spotlight in 1971.

:14:16. > :14:19.There are fears that it would collapse. The thinking of the day

:14:19. > :14:24.was that the best way to preserve their oratory was to remove it the

:14:24. > :14:29.collapsing roof and fill the whole thing with sand. I am standing on

:14:29. > :14:32.top of it now. Modern thinking is that that was a bad idea and the

:14:32. > :14:39.weight of the sand could be collapsing the walls of the ancient

:14:39. > :14:45.building. The St Piran distrust -- St Piran's Trust had been working

:14:45. > :14:50.for years to get the building uncovered and preserved. The moment

:14:51. > :15:00.is coming. We hope next year that everyone will join in and volunteer.

:15:01. > :15:02.

:15:02. > :15:08.You can come with a feel barrel, a towel, -- a travel, there is

:15:08. > :15:13.something for everyone to help with. These days, the St Piran flag flies

:15:13. > :15:18.all over the county. His story is one of myth, legend, a fact and

:15:18. > :15:25.Christian belief. The St Piran Trust hope his chapel will soon be

:15:25. > :15:34.uncovered for all to see. This whole area is an area of special

:15:34. > :15:40.scientific interest, so there are studies to be damned -- studies to

:15:40. > :15:46.be work can begin. A rare black rhino who was born at Paignton Zoo

:15:46. > :15:50.is moving on. The birth of Zuri was filled four years ago for BBC South

:15:50. > :15:57.West's Inside Out programme and she became an internet star when the

:15:57. > :16:02.pictures were beamed around the world. Zuri is going to Chester Zoo

:16:02. > :16:12.where of a similar age. The draw for the first round of the Football

:16:12. > :16:14.

:16:14. > :16:19.League Cup has produced a local derby. Exeter City and Yeovil will

:16:19. > :16:23.meet at St James's Park. Work is underway on a new cycle path

:16:23. > :16:28.between Plymouth and Tavistock. It will follow the old Great Western

:16:28. > :16:38.railway line through Brunel's 150- year-old Grenofen tunnel and

:16:38. > :16:38.

:16:38. > :16:45.viaduct. And the train leaves the valley... The old railway to

:16:45. > :16:52.Tavistock. If you listen closely enough, you can still imagine the

:16:52. > :17:01.ghosts of old locomotives. Most of the stonework is in pretty good

:17:01. > :17:05.condition, but we will nearly 100 and -- nearly 50 years ago, the

:17:25. > :17:31.new lease of life. It is a crucial part of the whole line. The sooner

:17:41. > :17:43.

:17:50. > :17:54.of his Great Western Empire, the tunnel will take cyclists and

:17:54. > :17:59.walkers away from congested and often dangerous roads. This was

:18:00. > :18:06.last used in the 1960s. It is a phenomenal project. We have made

:18:06. > :18:15.great strides in Devon and we are committed to cycling. 26, to us all

:18:40. > :18:47.We are having to put up a new one. This bridge is the last part of the

:19:18. > :19:24.now life. Thank you for coming in. There must have been some pretty

:19:24. > :19:28.important people there when you won? Absolutely. I was blown away

:19:28. > :19:35.by the talent in the room. I had a great day just hearing everybody

:19:35. > :19:40.else play. I think it should open some doors for me. There were some

:19:40. > :19:48.great people who I have been inspired by. What is it about an

:19:48. > :19:55.acoustic guitar or a particular that appeals to you? I just like

:19:55. > :19:59.that you can do the baselines, the harmony lines all at once. Her has

:19:59. > :20:09.been your inspiration? You had been playing for about 15 years? How old

:20:09. > :20:14.

:20:30. > :20:33.Plymouth University, how will this fit in with your future plans?

:20:33. > :20:42.thoroughly enjoyed Plymouth design, but I want to push my music a

:20:42. > :20:51.little bit further now. -- I thoroughly enjoyed project to

:20:52. > :21:00.design. I have you all day. Yes, we had been hearing you practise on

:22:02. > :22:06.here the piece you were judged on, Absolutely beautiful. What sort of

:22:06. > :22:16.support are you getting from Plymouth University? They have been

:22:16. > :22:23.fantastic. Just recently, I played the Vice Chancellor's address. That

:22:23. > :22:30.was lovely. They have helped me to launch a CD of mind and put me up

:22:30. > :22:36.to play University orchestral experiences. Where can people who

:22:36. > :22:46.are watching tonight see you next? I am heading home to Bournemouth,

:22:46. > :22:47.

:22:47. > :22:55.but I will be back and forward. I have made some great friends here.

:22:55. > :23:05.I will be back. Go on the internet at have a look? Absolutely. And two

:23:09. > :23:17.for coming in. Let's find out what Good evening to you. It is a fairly

:23:17. > :23:25.wet and windy forecast. Good news for some of our gardeners. Wet and

:23:25. > :23:34.windy weather over the weekend. It is already coming into parts of

:23:34. > :23:41.west Cornwall. This is the main area of low pressure. That great

:23:41. > :23:45.lump of cloud is heading straight towards us by the end of the night.

:23:45. > :23:52.It is fairly fast moving initially, then it slows as it moves into

:23:52. > :23:57.southern Britain. Not just wet weather, but strong winds as well.
