:00:23. > :00:30.Get ready to welcome the world. The countdown to the Olympics reaches a
:00:30. > :00:35.major milestone. We are live from Weymouth. Britain could see gold on
:00:35. > :00:41.these waters in 2012. Tonight we follow some of our best hopes come
:00:41. > :00:48.up with one year to go. Of the water Portland prepares for a full-
:00:48. > :00:54.scale test event. And beyond 2012, I will report from Athens on it --
:00:54. > :01:00.whether it there are lessons for after the Games leave town. At
:01:00. > :01:10.daily prepares to make his first official dive into the Olympic pool
:01:10. > :01:11.
:01:11. > :01:13.-- Tom Daley. Also tonight, driven to drink and finally, despair. The
:01:13. > :01:15.woman who cared for her ill husband escapes jail after trying to
:01:15. > :01:23.smother him. And the dozens of dolphins spotted dancing in the
:01:24. > :01:28.waters off Cornwall. One year from now it all begins.
:01:29. > :01:33.The opening ceremony will be held and the sailing events will arrive
:01:33. > :01:37.off the Dorset coast. That seaside resort down there is expected to
:01:37. > :01:43.see its population double as people flocked to Weymouth to watch the
:01:43. > :01:51.games. Up here overlooking Portland where the swimming events will take
:01:51. > :01:58.place, they will see gold being one. But what we do know is that Britain
:01:58. > :02:05.has some of the best hopes and they come from Devon. We went out on the
:02:05. > :02:11.water with them. The National Sailing Academy is up and running
:02:11. > :02:19.and is popular. But in one year the only sailors here will be a
:02:19. > :02:28.Olympians. Exmouth's Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes are two of
:02:28. > :02:30.the Olympic hopefuls getting to grips with local conditions. And
:02:30. > :02:34.amongst the 16 strong GB sailing team will be Ben Rhodes and Stevie
:02:34. > :02:38.Morrison. Or so they hope, as the final team selection hasn't been
:02:38. > :02:40.made yet. Unlike some Olympic sports, in sailing there is only
:02:40. > :02:42.one qualifying entry allowed per country in each of the 10 events.
:02:42. > :02:47.Ben and Stevie managed Olympic selection for Beijing and were
:02:47. > :02:50.tipped for a medal, but ended up coming ninth. But their dream of
:02:50. > :02:58.gold hasn't faded and Stevie Morrison says these are the waters
:02:58. > :03:05.to win it on. Today is not a fantastic advert for the place but
:03:05. > :03:09.it is as good sailing as you find anywhere on the planet. We have a
:03:09. > :03:15.good chance to win a medal. some of the world's best sailors
:03:15. > :03:25.from other countries are here practising already. Will it be a
:03:25. > :03:35.top Olympic venue? I think so. It would be nice to have at regatta in
:03:35. > :03:45.
:03:45. > :03:52.its strong wind. Hopefully Weymouth will bring it on in 2012.
:03:52. > :03:58.Next week a full scale test event will take place. And the National
:03:59. > :04:03.Sailing Academy is start to look very good, as I found out earlier.
:04:03. > :04:10.I reported from here on the day the successful bid was announced and
:04:10. > :04:20.this is the first time I have felt the presence of 2012. I has been to
:04:20. > :04:27.a health and safety demonstration. Rob Andrew's, is the idea to start
:04:27. > :04:30.with a blank canvas? Absolutely. We wanted to clear the site completely
:04:30. > :04:35.so we can then allocate the athletes all their spaces when they
:04:35. > :04:41.start to arrive. Selling is an organised sport. Are there any
:04:41. > :04:50.areas of concern? I think that is why we do test events, to find out
:04:50. > :04:57.if we are ready. This event is a very functional event. Take us
:04:57. > :05:03.through what happens? We have only allowed one entrant per country,
:05:03. > :05:12.just at the Games. 66 nations coming. So the best athletes in the
:05:12. > :05:18.world. I believe all the medallists will be here because they want to
:05:18. > :05:24.test it out as much as we do. We go through all the measurement
:05:24. > :05:28.processes and then we used the same international technical officials.
:05:28. > :05:34.And we hope a lot of the volunteers for this event will be the same
:05:34. > :05:40.ones coming back in 2012. And there has been a lot of controversy over
:05:40. > :05:47.the transport package. I think with the new road from Dorchester,
:05:47. > :05:52.everyone seems very happy. It is much better than it used to be.
:05:52. > :05:59.are getting excited of course. But there are four seasons to go before
:05:59. > :06:03.the Olympics. Just tell us how exciting it will be on that date?
:06:03. > :06:07.The big thing is that it is just the enthusiasm of everybody. The
:06:07. > :06:14.athletes. Some of them will have trained for 12 years just to get
:06:14. > :06:20.here. It is that enthusiasm that rubs off on all of the people, from
:06:20. > :06:24.the volunteers, two towns and cities. I think everyone will get
:06:24. > :06:30.wrapped up into this party mode with the most phenomenal sport
:06:30. > :06:38.going on air all different disciplines. -- in all different
:06:38. > :06:46.disciplines. Weymouth is hoping to capitalise on
:06:46. > :06:51.every aspect of the Games. They know it is not just 2012 but what
:06:51. > :06:59.happens after the Olympic torch has passed on that matters. The
:06:59. > :07:01.Government is committed to a lasting legacy. I've been to Athens,
:07:01. > :07:11.which hosted the Olympics in 2004, to see if there are lessons Dorset
:07:11. > :07:14.can learn from a former host. The sailing centre now. Dorset is
:07:14. > :07:19.next to host events on water but grease already knows what life can
:07:19. > :07:25.hold after the party moves on. Organisers admit that the future of
:07:25. > :07:31.some of the venues was not properly thought through but are there still
:07:31. > :07:41.reaping the rewards? And took a trip out of town. To people here
:07:41. > :07:42.
:07:42. > :07:49.feel ripples seven years on? were hit by the Depression, and
:07:49. > :07:55.that was it. The tourists came here and Greece was well known.
:07:55. > :08:00.there any benefit from it? There wasn't. Even the international
:08:00. > :08:06.Spotlight is not enough to persuade the mayor of the waterfront who
:08:06. > :08:11.questions whether the bid should ever have been put forward. We had
:08:11. > :08:15.expressed our objections and were against hosting the Games in Athens.
:08:15. > :08:19.We now feel that the legacy has just divide our argument. Today
:08:19. > :08:24.things are difficult and hosting the Olympic Games in my opinion did
:08:24. > :08:27.not benefit our country as much as it should have done. But tracking
:08:27. > :08:32.any upturn in the country's severely affected by the downturn
:08:32. > :08:39.is tricky. Greece has influenced the world and been bailed out by
:08:39. > :08:45.its neighbours. The Globe June dint as the Games returned home to
:08:45. > :08:49.Greece. -- tuned in. And then to the clashes on the streets. Athens
:08:49. > :08:54.is still badly bruised by the riots. Some of the protesters have not
:08:55. > :09:00.left. There was even a debate over the extent to which the Olympics
:09:00. > :09:04.have contributed to the current economic crisis. But if you can
:09:04. > :09:10.factor at the problems facing the euro, what has the legacy been,
:09:10. > :09:16.seven years on from the game's? Some venues I saw were deserted but
:09:16. > :09:22.others are still been used. There is an operating Marina close to the
:09:22. > :09:26.sailing centre. And even touching down here is a legacy, the city has
:09:26. > :09:31.the Games to thank for a new airport. There are new tramlines,
:09:31. > :09:37.new trains. Tens of millions of pounds have already been spent on
:09:37. > :09:41.the transport network in Dorset. But Athens is now discovering
:09:41. > :09:46.whether at the Olympics is the gift that keeps on giving. The area
:09:46. > :09:51.close to the sailing centres or on opportunity to grow its sailing
:09:51. > :09:57.business year on year just as Dorset does now. The hotel for the
:09:57. > :10:01.British team stayed said that the tramline helped but it has not
:10:01. > :10:08.become an huge resort for stock the atmosphere was terrific for the
:10:08. > :10:15.Games. We believed it would be like that after the Olympics. But it
:10:15. > :10:20.wasn't. Things went really downwards. Some visitors are from
:10:20. > :10:27.the next host city and there have been gains in the market according
:10:27. > :10:34.to this expert. But he tells me that the momentum built up is now
:10:34. > :10:41.over. Forget the Olympics, it was lovely, history, but that is all.
:10:41. > :10:44.So the effect on tourism has gone completely? Yes. Efforts to
:10:44. > :10:48.capitalise on the games are still evident. But I'm told it is the
:10:48. > :10:58.less visible benefits which means the Olympics are still delivering
:10:58. > :10:59.
:10:59. > :11:03.here. The Olympics provides a great legacy for a country. People learn
:11:03. > :11:07.to work in an international environment and under pressure with
:11:07. > :11:17.time constraints. The experience of the Olympics give him the
:11:17. > :11:21.
:11:21. > :11:27.opportunity to utilise those skills after the Olympics.
:11:27. > :11:31.Are there lessons in all of that for Dorset and the South West?
:11:31. > :11:41.Councillor Howard Lake from the women's and Portland council joins
:11:41. > :11:45.
:11:45. > :11:52.us now. There is going to be a follow-up to the Olympics and we
:11:52. > :11:57.know that because we have been planning for it. We have got our
:11:57. > :12:01.facilities to Olympic standard. Some of those I spoke to in Athens
:12:01. > :12:06.were concerned that their country did not get as much in terms of
:12:06. > :12:10.long-term benefits as they hoped. Does that worry you? It did
:12:10. > :12:14.initially because when we learned we were hosting the selling, we had
:12:14. > :12:19.a study done which said that of the last six Olympic sites, three have
:12:19. > :12:24.gone downhill afterwards but three have benefited. We decided we
:12:24. > :12:33.wanted to be like Barcelona and wanted to benefit very much from
:12:34. > :12:39.this. We want to see that benefit for decades after and to remember
:12:39. > :12:44.that Weymouth hosted the Olympics and it is an important harbour.
:12:44. > :12:48.People in Weymouth today were positive but also had reservations.
:12:48. > :12:52.Do you think everyone is on your side? I think they will be. The
:12:52. > :12:58.problem at the moment is that we are getting all the preparation
:12:58. > :13:03.without any of that glory. But that is coming to a close, there will
:13:03. > :13:12.soon be usable and then we get the glory next year and the publicity
:13:12. > :13:22.to go with it. So the pain first and then again afterwards. -- there
:13:22. > :13:22.
:13:22. > :13:29.again afterwards. Later in the programme we will see Tom Daley
:13:29. > :13:31.diving. Back to the studio. A woman from Devon who tried to
:13:31. > :13:35.smother her ill husband has been sentenced to a supervision order by
:13:35. > :13:38.a judge at Exeter Crown Court. Margaret Sandercock's husband has
:13:38. > :13:44.Parkinson's disease and the court heard caring for him had left her
:13:44. > :13:48.feeling isolated and lonely. A health charity says not enough is
:13:48. > :13:53.being done to help people who care for others. Our Home Affairs
:13:53. > :13:57.Correspondent, Simon Hall, reports. For almost 30 years, Margaret
:13:57. > :14:01.Sandercock cared for her husband, Graham. Parkinson's disease meant
:14:01. > :14:06.he couldn't walk or feed himself. It drove her to alcoholism - until
:14:06. > :14:08.one day she could take no more. She was found collapsed in the
:14:08. > :14:12.graveyard of Crediton Parish Church and confessed to trying to smother
:14:12. > :14:16.Graham. A charge of attempted murder was reduced to the offence
:14:16. > :14:26.of putting a person in fear of violence. Today she pleaded guilty
:14:26. > :14:28.
:14:28. > :14:33.and was given a supervision order. She would like to thank the court
:14:33. > :14:38.for being so as sympathetic to her position. It has been a difficult
:14:38. > :14:41.and sensitive case. The judge has made his decision accordingly,
:14:41. > :14:43.which is appropriate for both parties. Mrs Sandercock was a
:14:43. > :14:47.volunteer at Crediton parish church and a well-known community
:14:47. > :14:49.fundraiser, particularly for the Royal British legion. The court
:14:49. > :14:59.heard she felt isolated, very lonely and that her caring work was
:14:59. > :15:01.
:15:01. > :15:07.unappreciated. There is no doubt it is an issue, as people are living
:15:07. > :15:08.longer. And that role of caring can go on for such a long time.
:15:08. > :15:11.Department of Health told us they "recognise the valuable
:15:11. > :15:19.contribution carers make, and are committed to ensuring they have
:15:19. > :15:24.access to high quality support services." This was a hearing noted
:15:24. > :15:28.for its compassion and sensitivity. The judge and the prosecution and
:15:28. > :15:32.defence all expressed sympathy. The judge described Parkinson's as a
:15:32. > :15:41.cruel disease that had a draining, demanding and debilitating effect
:15:41. > :15:46.on those who cared for the sufferers.
:15:46. > :15:54.Earlier, I spoke to Val Buxton from Parkinson's UK. I asked her, aside
:15:54. > :15:58.from Mrs Sandercock's case today, how common a story this was.
:15:59. > :16:04.All too common, it really. We often hear from carers of people affected
:16:04. > :16:09.by Parkinson's who tell us just how isolating and overwhelming their
:16:09. > :16:13.responsibilities can be. A survey of around 3000 carers of people
:16:13. > :16:18.affected by Parkinson's show that just one in 10 were getting the
:16:18. > :16:22.support they needed from local services. That is a real concern.
:16:22. > :16:26.It is likely to get even worse actually with the cuts to
:16:26. > :16:30.government spending. A recent survey showed that in the south-
:16:30. > :16:35.west around 80% of carers were fearful that they would get even
:16:35. > :16:41.less support. We heard briefly from the Department of Health. They also
:16:41. > :16:45.said there providing 400 million of additional funding to the NHS
:16:45. > :16:50.between 2011 and 2015 to enable more carers to take breaks from
:16:50. > :16:54.their responsibilities. So they are putting money into the system. Why
:16:54. > :16:59.are people not benefiting? Unfortunately the evidence is that
:16:59. > :17:03.that money is not getting into frontline services. A recent survey
:17:03. > :17:11.of Primary Care Trusts, that the money was channelled to, said that
:17:11. > :17:16.very few have actually passed that money on. The overwhelming evidence
:17:16. > :17:18.was that it simply was not getting through.
:17:18. > :17:21.The woman whose car plunged down cliffs on the North Coast of
:17:21. > :17:24.Cornwall has been discharged from hospital today. The 56-year-old
:17:24. > :17:28.woman spent 18 hours on the cliff face at St Agnes Head after her car
:17:28. > :17:32.left the road. It's thought she'd become disorientated in thick fog
:17:32. > :17:37.on Monday afternoon. She was finally rescued in a major
:17:37. > :17:39.operation yesterday morning. The Plymouth based warship, HMS
:17:39. > :17:43.Sutherland, which is now involved in action off Libya, has conducted
:17:43. > :17:46.its first boarding operations. The frigate deployed a team of Royal
:17:46. > :17:53.Marines to search a merchant vessel with a view to enforcing an arms
:17:53. > :17:55.embargo. The ship was searched and cleared for onward passage.
:17:56. > :18:00.The Government has announced it won't hold a public inquiry into
:18:00. > :18:02.controversial plans for a development at Carlyon Bay. Despite
:18:02. > :18:07.local opposition, Cornwall Council approved the plans in June, subject
:18:07. > :18:09.to Government approval. The company behind the project, Commercial
:18:09. > :18:15.Estates Group, says it's pleased with the decision and it would
:18:15. > :18:18.involve local people with the scheme's progress.
:18:18. > :18:21.Hundreds of dolphins have been spotted off the Cornish coast this
:18:21. > :18:25.week. Wildlife experts say they're being drawn in by large amounts of
:18:25. > :18:33.fish. They're asking dolphin watchers to enjoy the sight, but to
:18:33. > :18:37.keep their distance. Eleanor Parkinson has more.
:18:37. > :18:42.Normally any sum up means basking sharks. This year it is dolphins
:18:42. > :18:48.and hundreds of them. There has been sightings of common dolphins
:18:48. > :18:53.all along the south coast of Cornwall. This film was shot off
:18:53. > :19:00.Penzance. Some of the parts have been 100 strong. Often there will
:19:00. > :19:05.travelled together, up to 1000 of them. But when they get into a
:19:05. > :19:12.coastal area the fish start to break down into smaller groups and
:19:12. > :19:22.they do the same to feed on them. Sometimes they will come racing in.
:19:22. > :19:23.
:19:23. > :19:30.They seem to love riding along with the catamaran. You see them
:19:30. > :19:40.socialising together. The experts say enjoy the show, but do not get
:19:40. > :19:40.
:19:40. > :19:42.too close and treat them with respect.
:19:42. > :19:44.Plymouth Argyle have announced Southampton Football Club's former
:19:44. > :19:48.finance director David Jones as the new acting chief executive at Home
:19:48. > :19:53.Park. He will work alongside acting chairman Peter Ridsdale who is
:19:53. > :19:57.bidding to buy the club. Jones saw Southampton through successive
:19:57. > :20:06.relegations and administration. Today he had this message for
:20:06. > :20:12.Argyle's unpaid staff. They will be paid in full over a
:20:12. > :20:19.period of time. We would love to be able to pay the Mall on Day One but
:20:20. > :20:27.whether that is possible, we do not whether that is possible, we do not
:20:27. > :20:31.know. -- paid them all. There has been quite a contrast
:20:31. > :20:36.from east to west and that is still there. We still have quite a lot of
:20:36. > :20:40.cloud around. But further west we have had that glorious sunshine.
:20:40. > :20:47.And for the rest of the week generally there is a lot more cloud
:20:47. > :20:52.around. This was their earlier today across Dartmoor where we has
:20:52. > :20:59.a lot of fine weather. The skies were blue with some sunshine. A lot
:20:59. > :21:09.of that gave us some fairly high temperatures, getting up to 25, 26
:21:09. > :21:16.
:21:16. > :21:21.degrees in a few places. The picture for the next couple of days,
:21:22. > :21:30.we have a line of cloud approaching from the West. This will give us
:21:30. > :21:37.some fine drizzle later on tonight. There's one at Maine weather system
:21:37. > :21:42.just gently drifting over us. By that time we get to lunchtime on
:21:42. > :21:51.Friday that front has almost gone but has left a legacy of cloud.
:21:51. > :21:55.That will be stubborn to shift. The high pressure, the one that gives
:21:55. > :22:02.us the decent weather, it comes in for the weekend which looks very
:22:02. > :22:09.promising indeed. We have those cloudy conditions across parts of
:22:09. > :22:16.Dorset and Somerset this evening. And cloud coming into the far west
:22:16. > :22:23.which will bring a lot of cloud tomorrow. This was earlier today in
:22:23. > :22:33.Torbay, the Torbay Carnival happening this evening. And the
:22:33. > :22:34.
:22:34. > :22:40.skies where quite cloudy but that has not stopped the preparations.
:22:40. > :22:43.The rest of East Devon also has some of that cloud now. Tonight it
:22:43. > :22:49.will start to break up a little and at the same time the weather front
:22:49. > :22:59.is coming in from the Atlantic bring a little fine drizzle in some
:22:59. > :23:03.
:23:03. > :23:10.areas. Tomorrow, at misty start for most of us. But into the afternoon,
:23:10. > :23:20.becoming largely dry although quite a lot of cloud coming in. Still a
:23:20. > :23:27.
:23:28. > :23:37.relatively warm. Quite a humoured For the Isles of Scilly, the
:23:38. > :24:12.
:24:12. > :24:19.sunshine breaking through later in The forecast for the way through
:24:19. > :24:23.and including the weekend, it looks quite promising. Cloud around on
:24:23. > :24:27.Friday, which will break up through the day to allow the sunshine to
:24:27. > :24:33.come through. But also the possibility of some showers
:24:33. > :24:39.developing mainly course Dorset and Somerset. But by the weekend that
:24:39. > :24:43.area of high pressure is back which means a lovely weekend in store and
:24:43. > :24:51.quite warm as well. Up to 25 quite warm as well. Up to 25
:24:51. > :24:54.degrees. That's it from us in the studio
:24:54. > :25:02.here in Plymouth, but we can now go back to Simon, who's live in
:25:02. > :25:08.Weymouth as the countdown to the 2012 Olympics really begins.
:25:09. > :25:18.Let's hope the weather stays good for the Olympics next year.
:25:19. > :25:19.
:25:19. > :25:26.Let's hope so. The anticipation is warming up certainly. But the main
:25:26. > :25:30.celebrations tonight are taking place in the Aquatic Centre in the
:25:31. > :25:33.heart of the Olympic village in London's east end. Plymouth's very
:25:33. > :25:38.own Olympic diver, Tom Daley, will be performing there in just a few
:25:38. > :25:42.minutes time. He'll be the first person to plunge off the curved
:25:42. > :25:52.concrete diving platforms there. Earlier, Claire Balding managed to
:25:52. > :25:52.
:25:52. > :25:58.catch up with him for a chat. I am delighted that Tom Daley could
:25:58. > :26:02.join as here. We're on the edge of the aquatic pull. And there is the
:26:02. > :26:09.ten-metre platform. You will be diving off their tonight. Are you
:26:09. > :26:13.nervous? I am quite nervous but I'm also so excited. It is quite a lot
:26:13. > :26:19.of pressure to do the first official died. But it looks great
:26:19. > :26:24.and you can just imagine the Olympic atmosphere next year.
:26:24. > :26:32.Usually proud to be representing Great Britain and the south-west?
:26:32. > :26:37.Definitely. The south-west has been so supportive of me. Everyone is
:26:37. > :26:43.going to get so excited about the Olympic Games next year. It will
:26:43. > :26:48.give everyone that extra but most. But you also have to keep on with
:26:48. > :26:52.the basics, the boring stuff, the training. That is the most
:26:52. > :26:57.important thing in the career of any athlete. So what is important
:26:57. > :27:04.that I keep on training and balancing that with school work,
:27:04. > :27:10.media, and family life. And that is why a you're going to downgrade the
:27:10. > :27:15.school work a little bit? I will do that from January. I will do full-
:27:15. > :27:21.time training to make sure I have enough hours in the pool. And then
:27:21. > :27:26.do my school work in between training sessions. Do you have any
:27:26. > :27:29.idea which died you will be before Ming? I'm not sure yet. I will have
:27:29. > :27:35.to see which one will be good enough to look good on the cameras
