:00:12. > :00:19.A man has been arrested for attempted murder after a fuel

:00:19. > :00:22.tanker ploughed into a bungalow. Good evening. A woman inside the

:00:22. > :00:24.property escaped serious injury - we'll report from the scene. Also

:00:24. > :00:27.tonight: the conman who stole people's identities. Kevin Castle

:00:27. > :00:36.raided post boxes to gain personal details which he used to commit

:00:36. > :00:41.fraud. Sentenced to 11 years - the teenager who carried out a brutal

:00:41. > :00:46.attack which left a grandfather in a wheelchair. The grandchildren are

:00:46. > :00:56.in bits. We're heartbroken. And as diesel prices reach a record high,

:00:56. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :00:59.how small businesses are struggling with the cost of fuel. A man has

:00:59. > :01:02.been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a tanker

:01:02. > :01:05.full of fuel crashed into a house in Wool in Dorset. The resulting

:01:05. > :01:09.fire gutted the house on Folly Lane near the local primary School, but

:01:09. > :01:15.the woman living there managed to escape. Some locals say a man was

:01:15. > :01:19.seen running from the scene. Ben Moore reports. Deep skid marks now

:01:19. > :01:26.the only clue that the huge scorched hole in this house was

:01:26. > :01:32.caused by a tanker full of fuel. It rode up the pavement this morning,

:01:32. > :01:38.the resulting blaze ripped right through the bung alow. We don't get

:01:38. > :01:44.this sort of thing every day in Wool. We're a quiet, sleepy village.

:01:44. > :01:49.30 firefighters took an hour to get the blaze under control. Later

:01:49. > :01:56.police detained a man on suspicion of attempted murder. Police say

:01:56. > :02:02.they have arrested a 51-year-old man from Yeovil that was known to

:02:02. > :02:06.the woman. Locals say he was her partner. The woman inside escaped

:02:06. > :02:14.unharmed. The house is a different matter. But the tanker is no longer

:02:14. > :02:17.there. Removed pending a police examination. A notorious conman who

:02:17. > :02:20.stole the identities of people in Somerset has admitted fraud today.

:02:20. > :02:21.46-year-old Kevin Castle, who lived in West Buckland, targeted

:02:21. > :02:30.residents with unsecured letterboxes, then stole their

:02:30. > :02:32.personal details. Today he pleaded guilty to 27 charges of fraud and

:02:32. > :02:42.one of money laundering. He'll be sentenced next month. Steve Powell

:02:42. > :02:48.has more. The post map wasn't the only one doing the rounds in this

:02:48. > :02:54.village on the border between Somerset and Devon. Often he was

:02:54. > :03:01.followed by Kevin Castle, only he wasn't delivering mail. He was

:03:01. > :03:11.stealing it. Again and again and again. Then using the personal

:03:11. > :03:12.

:03:12. > :03:17.details he stole, he set up fraudulent cedid card events. But

:03:17. > :03:23.his luck ran out when he targeted this man. Steve became suspicious

:03:23. > :03:31.that someone was tampering with his mail and turned detech tifr. I went

:03:31. > :03:38.and bought this camera. -- detech tifr. To solve my mystery. I put it

:03:38. > :03:46.on the Monday for the whole of that week I captured the bloke that was

:03:46. > :03:54.coming to my house. You gotture man didn't you? Yes. He deserves all

:03:54. > :03:59.what he gets. The sheer number of cards acquired enabled Castle and

:03:59. > :04:02.his partner to fund a lavish lifestyle. They lived in this

:04:02. > :04:09.impressive property, with paddocks and stables, which they used to

:04:09. > :04:13.house their six horses. Their couple are captured using a

:04:13. > :04:18.fraudulent credit card on a spending spree. They ran up

:04:18. > :04:25.thousands of pounds worth of debt. This type of crime is happening on

:04:25. > :04:31.a daily basis. My advice is don't have a post box on your drive. Have

:04:31. > :04:35.it coming through your front door. Most victims remain oblivious that

:04:35. > :04:42.their identity has been stolen and debts ran up their name, until nay

:04:42. > :04:47.receive a demand for payment on a credit card they knew nothing about.

:04:47. > :04:51.Steve says it never crossed his mind that somebody might steal his

:04:51. > :04:58.identity and after this experience, he is heeding police advice and

:04:58. > :05:01.making sure his post never falls into the wrong hands again. A 15-

:05:01. > :05:05.year-old boy who attacked and left a man for dead, has been sentenced

:05:05. > :05:07.to 11 years in a young offenders institution. Tyler Fielding jumped

:05:07. > :05:12.and stamped on Victor King's head after an argument about queue

:05:12. > :05:16.jumping in a shop in Redruth in Cornwall. Mr King has been left

:05:16. > :05:19.disabled by the attack and now has to use a wheel chair. In this

:05:19. > :05:29.report by Eleanor Parkinson, you may find some of the details

:05:29. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:38.upsetting. 51-year-old Victor King arrived in court today, the attack

:05:38. > :05:43.left him disabled. Tyler Fielding was just 15, the teenager was drunk

:05:43. > :05:48.and had been smoking cannabis and was trying to buy more alcohol in a

:05:48. > :05:52.shop. After leaving the shop, the teenager attacked Victor King twice.

:05:53. > :05:57.This footage shows Fielding and a group of others approaching Mr King.

:05:57. > :06:04.We can't show you the attack, but he jumped and stamped on Mr King's

:06:04. > :06:08.head so hard that the imprint of his shoes were left on his victim's

:06:09. > :06:15.face. Tyler Fielding walked off and left Mr King for dead. He was found

:06:15. > :06:19.by a passing jogger. He had frackures to his jaw, eye socket

:06:19. > :06:23.and voice box. If he hadn't been given emergency treatment at the

:06:23. > :06:30.scene, he would have died. Mr King's family described how their

:06:30. > :06:36.father's life had been changed by the attack. It's just been ruined.

:06:36. > :06:42.It has ruined our life. How much care does your dad need now?

:06:42. > :06:46.needs you know around-the-clock care. The court heard Tyler

:06:46. > :06:53.Fielding had a troubled childhood and moved to Cornwall to start a

:06:53. > :06:56.new life. He was sentenced to eleven years in custody. $WHITE The

:06:56. > :06:59.average diesel price in the South West has hit an all time high

:06:59. > :07:02.according to the AA motoring organisation. In the last 12 months

:07:02. > :07:05.the average price per litre has gone up from nearly 1.33 to just

:07:05. > :07:08.over 1.42 - that's an increase of more than 7%. As Jane Chandler

:07:08. > :07:16.reports, independent traders in the region say they're doing their best

:07:16. > :07:23.to absorb costs, but it's becoming increasingly difficult. Reflecting

:07:23. > :07:27.on how she can keep her customers happy the rise in fuel costs is

:07:27. > :07:32.tough on Alison's business, specially as many of her flowers

:07:33. > :07:38.are delivered by van. I wuldz say in the past six months it has

:07:38. > :07:42.doubled, the fuel cost. But we try to swallow the costs and we're not

:07:42. > :07:49.putting our delivery fees up, but we are losing our, our profit

:07:49. > :07:54.margin is coming down. Parcels are delivered from this depot in

:07:54. > :07:59.Saltash. Their mileage is high and it is a struggle to keep up with

:07:59. > :08:02.fuel prices. At the moment we're surviving. It is not a massive

:08:02. > :08:06.profit organisation. And I don't think the parcel business can

:08:06. > :08:11.sustain its much longer. It is a case of monitoring it from month to

:08:11. > :08:18.months. If we have to pass on a fuel surcharge again, we'll have to

:08:18. > :08:23.do it. I can't see that the whole industry can sustain this. The AA

:08:23. > :08:29.say it is worrying that even though demands is falling, the price of

:08:29. > :08:33.diesel and petrol continues to rise. It is of concern, particularly for

:08:33. > :08:39.the hauliers and for small businesses, and indeed motorists in

:08:39. > :08:44.rural areas of the South West, who are dependent on road transport.

:08:44. > :08:49.And for many businesses and individuals, there is no choice.

:08:49. > :08:53.World events supply issues and stock market speculators are some

:08:53. > :08:58.of the reasons for the rise. There are some things the Government

:08:58. > :09:02.cannot do. If it does do the one thing that is easiest, to lower

:09:02. > :09:08.taxes, that just means we have to find the money from somewhere else

:09:08. > :09:13.or cut public services more. diz businesses can do is hope --

:09:13. > :09:19.businesss can do is hope prices stabilise. Don't know how they will

:09:19. > :09:22.bring them down. More than 1,000 vulnerable people in Torbay could

:09:22. > :09:25.be affected by millions of pounds of cuts from the adult social care

:09:25. > :09:27.budget. Among other things Torbay Council is considering a reduction

:09:27. > :09:33.in residential and nursing home placements, while reducing respite

:09:33. > :09:35.care and day services for older people. The cuts will amount to

:09:36. > :09:40.more than 4 million, with the biggest area affected being

:09:40. > :09:44.domiciliary care. That's where carers go into people's houses and

:09:44. > :09:50.do things like wash and dress them. That service alone could lose 1.1

:09:50. > :09:57.million. Earlier we asked the owners of one care company what

:09:57. > :10:01.this could mean for people who need home care in Torbay. Obviously it

:10:01. > :10:06.will affect them. Front line service always seem to be affected

:10:06. > :10:12.and they won't get the care that they should be getting. My argument

:10:12. > :10:18.with it it is always the vulnerable that get hit first. Education is

:10:19. > :10:22.ring fenced, why can't social care budgetss be ring fenced? The time

:10:22. > :10:31.carers are assigned to each client has already been cut. Some think it

:10:31. > :10:35.can't be cut any further. We'll have the same work to do h, but in

:10:35. > :10:41.less time. So what you would do in an hour, a lot of our clients have

:10:41. > :10:47.to have creams apply and eyes bathed and thn you go on to doing

:10:47. > :10:52.breakfast and clearing up and you have to do all that in half an hour.

:10:52. > :10:55.It is very hard to get it all in. report published for councillors,

:10:55. > :11:04.points out the risks, and describes the size of the cutbacks in

:11:04. > :11:06.domiciliary care as an immense challenge. In a statement the chief

:11:06. > :11:10.executive of Torbay Care trust said: "We understand that people

:11:10. > :11:12.may be concerned about how proposed changes to care will affect them or

:11:12. > :11:15.a family member. People will continue to receive the care which

:11:15. > :11:18.they are assessed as needing to ensure their independence,

:11:18. > :11:21.wellbeing and safety." The scale of the cuts has not yet been finalised.

:11:21. > :11:29.Members of Torbay council will make the final decision in the next few

:11:29. > :11:33.weeks. A judge has been told two men accused of conspiring to rob

:11:33. > :11:38.and murder Devon soul singer Joss Stone have mental health problems

:11:38. > :11:43.that may affect their ability to stand trial. Kevin Liverpool and

:11:44. > :11:49.Junior Bradshaw are accused of conspiracy to commit murder, GBH

:11:49. > :11:54.and robbery. They were both arrested last June. An operation to

:11:54. > :12:00.clear fishing nets from the wreck of HMS Scylla is under way, it is

:12:00. > :12:08.feared the net is a danger to divers and wildlife. The plan is to

:12:08. > :12:11.attach a line to the net and pull Members of homelessness charities

:12:11. > :12:14.are concerned changes to the way housing benefit is calculated will

:12:14. > :12:17.leave more people in the South West without a home. From the beginning

:12:17. > :12:20.of this year, tenants under 35 have seen the amount they can claim

:12:20. > :12:22.reduced, forcing some to reconsider their housing options. Latest

:12:22. > :12:25.figures show Government spending on housing benefit in the region

:12:25. > :12:35.increased by more than 57 million last year. Spotlight's Simon

:12:35. > :12:35.

:12:35. > :12:37.Alexander reports. Lloyd called him -- Coleman is

:12:37. > :12:42.being forced to scour the newspaper could try and find somewhere

:12:42. > :12:48.affordable to live. The part-time supermarket worker is in temporary

:12:48. > :12:51.accommodation, but the Government's new restrictions for claimants

:12:51. > :12:58.under 35 means his dream of living in a home in which his children can

:12:58. > :13:03.stay are in the balance. -- is in the balance.

:13:03. > :13:09.I don't get to see my children much, Ridley, every other weekend, if

:13:09. > :13:15.that. Latest Government figures obtained

:13:15. > :13:22.by BBC Scotland -- BBC Spotlight show that more than 751 million

:13:22. > :13:30.were spent on housing benefit and the Year of 2010 to 2011. The total

:13:30. > :13:40.for Devon, including Plymouth and for Devon, including Plymouth and

:13:40. > :13:40.

:13:41. > :13:44.for Devon, including Plymouth and Torbay, was 336.6 million.

:13:44. > :13:49.Some charities are warning the benefit changes will lead to more

:13:49. > :13:53.homelessness across the South West. But the Government's new age Clyde

:13:53. > :14:00.tenia mean that claimants will only be able to claim for a run in a

:14:01. > :14:09.shared house, rather than a flat. For people in their 30s, that is a

:14:09. > :14:13.difficult proposition, particularly if they have children.

:14:13. > :14:19.Charities say there has a shortage of properties for people to rent

:14:19. > :14:23.rooms in the South West. The DWP says Spiring benefit costs must be

:14:23. > :14:28.brought under control and claimants must make the same choices as

:14:28. > :14:36.people not on benefits. For Lloyd, this is an issue that is giving him

:14:36. > :14:38.plenty of food for thought. As we heard, the Government is

:14:38. > :14:44.adamant that this is necessary to cut costs.

:14:44. > :14:47.Yes, the Government also says that shared accommodation is yet --

:14:47. > :14:52.common among younger people and is in fact the norm. On the face of it,

:14:52. > :14:59.that is quite uncontroversial, but there is a lot of disagreement as

:14:59. > :15:04.to how you did -- define younger people. The older rules had the

:15:04. > :15:09.cut-off period at 25. These changes raise that substantially to draw in

:15:09. > :15:13.people will on the way to 40. This is to judge allows his

:15:13. > :15:17.admission that you cannot aspire to live by yourself, independently,

:15:17. > :15:22.until you late 30s. We know that the average age for a first-time

:15:23. > :15:28.house buyer is now 37. It will rise to over 40 during this Parliament.

:15:28. > :15:30.This is saying you cannot get a flat until you were 45, I think

:15:31. > :15:38.that is the wrong way of so when this problem.

:15:38. > :15:43.While housing may be a big problem in places like Manchester, some MPs

:15:43. > :15:53.are saying it is not so much of a problem in the sad twist.

:15:53. > :15:56.

:15:56. > :15:59.And there will be more on this on politics the Sunday.

:15:59. > :16:01.#$$NEWLINE The charity which runs Devon's Air Ambulance is to

:16:01. > :16:04.purchase a second helicopter thanks to the fundraising efforts of

:16:04. > :16:07.listeners to BBC Radio Devon. A cheque for over 720,000 was

:16:07. > :16:10.presented today after the stations two year appeal. People who've

:16:10. > :16:12.either raised money or been helped by the service were at a special

:16:12. > :16:16.event in north Devon. Spotlight's Hamish Marshall was there.

:16:16. > :16:21.It is something you don't want to see. If you needed, it is the best

:16:21. > :16:27.sight and sound there is. The Devon the air ambulances fly six missions

:16:27. > :16:32.a day. One last July helped Pat. She had been axed that they struck

:16:32. > :16:38.in the eye by a golf ball hit by her husband, David. They were on

:16:38. > :16:42.the most remote port of Sidmouth of course. She was going to be and a

:16:42. > :16:45.hospital in Exeter within minutes, whereas it would have probably

:16:46. > :16:50.taken three-quarters of an hour, that was such a relief.

:16:50. > :16:58.Pat still does not have full sight in her eye, but they are now keen

:16:58. > :17:01.fundraisers. The Radio Devon appeal raised 725,000. That means the

:17:01. > :17:05.trust can produce a helicopter, which is better than the current

:17:05. > :17:11.leasing arrangement. It is the certainty that we know we

:17:11. > :17:17.are going to need that cost. It means we are now three to invest

:17:17. > :17:21.all our efforts in fund-raising to keep the air ambulances flying.

:17:21. > :17:26.money was raised in many ways, including sponsored swims, table-

:17:26. > :17:32.tops sales and a folk music marathon.

:17:32. > :17:36.They tis a wonderful achievement for the people of Denham and to

:17:36. > :17:39.give anything from 20p to thousands of pounds to reach this amazing

:17:39. > :17:43.total. The new helicopter will be in

:17:43. > :17:49.service next year. Time now to take a look at the

:17:49. > :17:54.weekend's sport. Good evening. It has been another

:17:54. > :17:57.unpredictable week for Plymouth Argyle. Fans were expecting the

:17:57. > :18:01.appointment of a new Director of Football - but Sean O'Driscoll, the

:18:01. > :18:03.man thought to be the front runner for the job, has accepted a role at

:18:03. > :18:08.Nottingham Forest. Former Luton manager Richard Money is now the

:18:08. > :18:11.latest name to be linked with the vacany at Home Park. The delay

:18:11. > :18:19.means the pressure remains on manager Carl Fletcher ahead of

:18:19. > :18:22.tomorrow's home game against Crawley Town.

:18:22. > :18:25.Elsewhere, the rest of our club sides are on the road this weekend.

:18:25. > :18:28.Just five points separate Exeter and Oldham in the League One

:18:28. > :18:31.standings. The Grecians will be keen to make it three games without

:18:31. > :18:34.defeat. Yeovil Town travel to Bury, where they desperately need to pick

:18:34. > :18:37.up three points to start moving clear of the relegation zone. And

:18:37. > :18:43.in League Two, manager Martin Ling will be looking to extend Torquay's

:18:43. > :18:46.winning streak as they take on For the Exeter Chiefs just one game

:18:46. > :18:50.stands between them and a place in the quarter-finals of the Amlin Cup.

:18:50. > :18:53.If the Chiefs can secure a home win over Perpignan it would be the

:18:53. > :19:03.first time they have made it to the knock-out stages of a European

:19:03. > :19:05.

:19:05. > :19:08.competition. It is a great situation for us to being,

:19:08. > :19:18.individually and collectively. Do have a side like a Pinot coming

:19:18. > :19:21.

:19:21. > :19:24.here, it is a massive test for us. -- Perpignon. We're looking forward

:19:24. > :19:27.to bringing them down here and giving them a taste of it.

:19:27. > :19:30.Plymouth Albion have the weekend off, but Sunday see's the Cornish

:19:30. > :19:33.Pirates resume their attack on the British and Irish Cup as they

:19:33. > :19:35.welcome Nottingham to the Menaye Field. Pirates took the title in

:19:36. > :19:38.2010, and are keen to progress past their quater-final encounter. The

:19:39. > :19:41.clubs met just two weeks ago in the Championship, with the Pirates

:19:41. > :19:44.pipping their opposition to the post by just two points.

:19:44. > :19:46.You can hear the match live on BBC You can hear the match live on BBC

:19:46. > :19:54.Radio Cornwall, or on the BBC Cornwall sport website. Kick-off is

:19:54. > :19:57.And just before I go, good luck to the Plymouth Raiders this weekend.

:19:57. > :20:04.It is a double header for them at the Pavilions, Guildford Heat

:20:04. > :20:09.tomorrow night, and then the Cheshire Jets on Sunday afternoon.

:20:09. > :20:14.Thank you very much. The 2012 Olympics get underway in London in

:20:14. > :20:17.July, and of course, importantly for us, in Weymouth and Portland.

:20:17. > :20:20.This Sunday, we're putting out a very special programme profiling

:20:20. > :20:27.the region's top athletes. It's called South West Olympic Dreams

:20:28. > :20:32.and will be presented by Natalie who told us more about it.

:20:32. > :20:37.We were spoilt for choice of material for this programme. We are

:20:37. > :20:41.so lucky in the South West. Not Ollie are we hosting part of their

:20:41. > :20:45.games - and not many regions can say that - we also have some really

:20:45. > :20:51.high-profile competitors that stand a good chance of winning a medal at

:20:51. > :20:56.the Olympics. Let's start with the obvious - Tom Daley. He is the chap

:20:56. > :21:00.everyone is talking about. He is the poster boy for London 2012, and

:21:00. > :21:06.that is something he is a little bemused by.

:21:06. > :21:10.I don't see myself as a poster boy for 2012. It is something I love to

:21:10. > :21:14.do, something I have worked hard at, and if people see it like that, it
