:00:00. > :00:00.Commonwealth Summit in Sri Lanka. That is all from the BBC News at

:00:00. > :00:16.six. On BBC 29,000 patients waiting for

:00:17. > :00:20.follow`up appointments at the region's biggest hospital.

:00:21. > :00:23.Good evening. There are calls for urgent action to deal with the

:00:24. > :00:33.backlog at Derriford. The hospital says it has put plans in place. We

:00:34. > :00:36.are identifying those patients who we believe to be at risk by

:00:37. > :00:39.prioritising their appointments. Also tonight: A murder investigation

:00:40. > :00:43.in Cornwall. A woman has been arrested after the death of a

:00:44. > :00:46.60`year`old GP. Praising the work of food banks ` the Archbishop of

:00:47. > :00:59.Canterbury begins a three`day visit to the region.

:01:00. > :01:14.And we're live at this year's Party For Pudsey. Make sure you join us

:01:15. > :01:16.later TQM. `` to hear the song. Health watchdogs in Plymouth are

:01:17. > :01:20.urgently asking how Derriford Hospital plans to deal with a

:01:21. > :01:22.backlog of 29,000 patients who are overdue follow`up appointments. They

:01:23. > :01:25.include cancer and heart patients and children. Plymouth Hospitals

:01:26. > :01:28.Trust says it is prioritising patients to ensure those who might

:01:29. > :01:35.be at risk are seen quickly. Here's our Health Correspondent Sally

:01:36. > :01:39.Mountjoy. It is the region's biggest hospital

:01:40. > :01:43.and sees half a million patients a year. It almost 29,000 people who

:01:44. > :01:46.should have had follow`up appointments are still waiting to be

:01:47. > :01:54.seen. Cancel health watchdogs are asking what is being done about it

:01:55. > :01:58.`` Council. I want to know why there are bad many and how it is going to

:01:59. > :02:01.be managed, because I except that there for deserve very busy

:02:02. > :02:06.hospital, and obviously there will be quite a few referrals back, but

:02:07. > :02:13.it is making sure that it is managed properly and is not allowed to

:02:14. > :02:17.escalate to five. The trust says that the backlog is a long`term

:02:18. > :02:22.problem. The surgeon is overseeing the plan to clear it. No heart

:02:23. > :02:26.patients are at risk from the delays, but he says that all cancer

:02:27. > :02:31.patients will be seen in the next three weeks, as well 5000 people who

:02:32. > :02:35.need to be seen quickly. We're prioritising appointments of those

:02:36. > :02:43.we believe to be at risk, we are making sure that they get a timely

:02:44. > :02:46.appointment in the near future. The number of patients overdue hospital

:02:47. > :02:51.follow`up theories from none to just over 5000 that other hospitals,

:02:52. > :02:56.where there are also plans to reduce the numbers. At Derriford there are

:02:57. > :03:03.alternatives to follow`up appointments. Nurse led clinics,

:03:04. > :03:07.follow`up clinics, telephone. Any means that we can prevent patients

:03:08. > :03:11.unnecessarily coming to the hospital, and getting the right

:03:12. > :03:19.treatment. Derriford is struggling to balance rising cost and demand

:03:20. > :03:24.with falling incomes. It is having to cope with pressure is on A to

:03:25. > :03:29.make sure that new patients are seen quickly and get follow`ups. It is up

:03:30. > :03:32.to GPs to work out with patients what health services we really need

:03:33. > :03:40.at how those can be provided within limited resources. The wife of a

:03:41. > :03:44.Cornish GP has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing him to death

:03:45. > :03:47.at their home in Feock. He has been named locally as Dr Gary Hughes, who

:03:48. > :03:53.was a partner at a practice in Redruth. Alison Johns reports.

:03:54. > :04:05.Police were called to this quiet residence in Feock at about 740 M ``

:04:06. > :04:11.7:40am this morning. They found that 50 old stabbed and also a woman with

:04:12. > :04:17.minor injuries. She was arrested on suspicion of murder. The incident

:04:18. > :04:22.has shocked neighbours. You do not expect this to happen somewhere like

:04:23. > :04:27.this, especially such nice people. Two doctors, happily married. I saw

:04:28. > :04:34.the a week ago going out in the sports car with the roof down. What

:04:35. > :04:38.could possibly go wrong? It is a tragic loss to the community and I

:04:39. > :04:43.am sure that they have got very many patients in the practice were going

:04:44. > :04:48.to miss them both and I am very, very sorry. And I know that all of

:04:49. > :04:54.the people here feel very low on this occasion. Dr Gary Hughes worked

:04:55. > :05:02.at this practice in Redruth. Detectives have been carrying out

:05:03. > :05:05.house`to`house enquiries. We're not looking for anyone else at the

:05:06. > :05:10.moment. This appears to be a domestic incident. We have done

:05:11. > :05:14.neighbourhood enquiries, obviously if anyone has information that can

:05:15. > :05:20.assist us and they have not been spoken to by a police officer,

:05:21. > :05:24.please contact us. Police say that doctors use's life, his injuries are

:05:25. > :05:33.not thought to be life`threatening, will be released from hospital when

:05:34. > :05:37.she is fit enough to be questioned. An inquest has heard how an armed

:05:38. > :05:41.robber who died after he was held on the ground by customers at a betting

:05:42. > :05:43.shop in Plymouth had been drinking heavily. 50`year`old Alan Levers was

:05:44. > :05:46.three`and`a`half times over the drink`drive alcohol limit when he

:05:47. > :05:49.went into the Ladbrokes branch on Crownhill Road in January wearing a

:05:50. > :06:02.gas mask. Janine Jansen reports from the inquest.

:06:03. > :06:07.50`year`old Alan Levers had pretty easily `` previously spent time in

:06:08. > :06:11.jail. He was also an alcoholic. In January he was three and a half

:06:12. > :06:17.times over the legal drink drive limit when he attempted to rob this

:06:18. > :06:27.big makers. CCTV footage showed him wearing a gas mask and pointing an

:06:28. > :06:42.imitation pistol. One customer help them to the ground. When the police

:06:43. > :06:46.allowed the took off the gas mask. . The family of Alan Levers did not

:06:47. > :06:49.want to speak to the media today, but in a statement they said, I am

:06:50. > :06:53.sorry for what the witnesses were put through. What happened should

:06:54. > :07:01.never have happened in the first place and Alan played `` paid the

:07:02. > :07:04.price. People in Cornwall have been given more details about plans to

:07:05. > :07:08.build a dedicated mental health unit for young people in the county.

:07:09. > :07:11.The campaign for a unit follows the death of 18`year`old Ben Cowburn,

:07:12. > :07:14.who took his own life whilst he was a patient at Long Reach House in

:07:15. > :07:18.Redruth, an adult mental health unit. At the moment many young

:07:19. > :07:25.people are sent out of the county for care. Ben's father says that's

:07:26. > :07:28.wrong. I think they feel terribly isolated. Someone put a comment on

:07:29. > :07:35.our website which was, and I will paraphrase, basically, I am ill, I

:07:36. > :07:41.am medicated, and they sent me 200 miles away from home, away from my

:07:42. > :07:47.friends and family. He would not treat a prisoner like this, red dog.

:07:48. > :07:50.The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby visited Cornwall today.

:07:51. > :07:53.Amongst his stops he called in on a food bank and money centre in

:07:54. > :07:56.Launceston. The Archbishop was impressed by how communities have

:07:57. > :07:59.responded to the need of food banks in Cornwall. He believes the

:08:00. > :08:03.combination of money centre and food bank work well together. In the past

:08:04. > :08:09.The Archbishop has been outspoken about payday lenders and the risks

:08:10. > :08:13.of people falling into debt. I think they are essential in tackling the

:08:14. > :08:18.issues that get people into financial trouble in the first

:08:19. > :08:28.place. And good centre in evil steeple to just stand up and see how

:08:29. > :08:38.to tackle the problem properly `` a good money centre allows people just

:08:39. > :08:41.to stand up. One of the final links in the new Exe Estuary cycle route

:08:42. > :08:44.opened today. It crosses the River Clyst at

:08:45. > :08:46.Topsham near Exeter and has cost around ?2.5 million to build.

:08:47. > :08:50.Adrian Campbell reports. The beautiful scenery along the Exe

:08:51. > :08:57.Estuary has already provided beautiful routes for cyclist. We

:08:58. > :09:00.have been waiting for months to have this open and all of the new bridges

:09:01. > :09:05.that we have been open, we just love it. It keeps us fit and happy. My

:09:06. > :09:12.colleague and I come down most weeks. This is a real enhancement of

:09:13. > :09:16.the past. It is the most dutiful cycle path I think in the country.

:09:17. > :09:21.Although I have not seen the bridge yet, this can only be an

:09:22. > :09:30.improvement. It was a feat of engineering to bring this bridge to

:09:31. > :09:34.its final location. It has become part of the landscape. Today this

:09:35. > :09:37.section of the route was opened for the first time and there is already

:09:38. > :09:45.a lot of interest about what is going on here.

:09:46. > :09:49.In football, Plymouth Argyle travel to York tomorrow in search of goals.

:09:50. > :09:52.The Pilgrims have won their last two League games but have scored the

:09:53. > :09:56.fewest goals in the Division. Back in Devon, Exeter City look to return

:09:57. > :10:00.to winning ways at home to Southend United while Torquay United hope to

:10:01. > :10:01.have Captain Lee Mansell fit for their visit from third`placed

:10:02. > :10:04.Chesterfield. In the rugby the Cornish Pirates

:10:05. > :10:09.visit Jersey in the Championship tomorrow, but our other two sides

:10:10. > :10:12.don't play until Sunday. The Exeter Chiefs are in Anglo`Welsh Cup action

:10:13. > :10:15.against Bath, the only top`flight team the Chiefs have failed to beat

:10:16. > :10:19.since they entered the Premiership in 2010. In the Championship,

:10:20. > :10:24.Plymouth Albion go to Nottingham to look for their first ever win at

:10:25. > :10:27.Meadow Lane. Body`boarders from across the

:10:28. > :10:30.country have gathered in Newquay to surf with a living legend of the

:10:31. > :10:34.sport. Nine`time world champion Mike Stewart checked out the waves at

:10:35. > :10:46.Tolcarne Beach as part of a whistle`stop tour of the county.

:10:47. > :10:50.Johnny Rutherford was there. This is not what you would call good

:10:51. > :10:54.surf conditions, but when you have travelled all the way from Hawaii to

:10:55. > :10:59.body`board in Newquay, you paddle on regardless. It looks terrible, but

:11:00. > :11:05.once you get out there and looks good. He has come to Cornwall tissue

:11:06. > :11:13.off the skills that have made him nine time world champion. I have

:11:14. > :11:18.seen a lot of people that I met the first time I was here. It is great

:11:19. > :11:23.to see them. Some people travelled six hours just to surf with him. It

:11:24. > :11:28.is once`in`a`lifetime. The things that the wage and has done for our

:11:29. > :11:35.sport is unbelievable. `` the legend. Some say he is a great role

:11:36. > :11:43.model for the young body`boarders. Some say that body`boarding is the

:11:44. > :11:48.best way to write away. Mike Stewart is the best at it on this board. To

:11:49. > :12:03.continue K `` to come to Newquay and shows what he's got is amazing. Mike

:12:04. > :12:09.Stewart's was. Tour `` whistle`stop tour will continue in the region

:12:10. > :12:13.before going to Ireland. That is all for me here in the

:12:14. > :12:23.studio tonight. It is time to start the count down to this evening's

:12:24. > :12:26.fundraising Party For Pudsey. Rebecca Will is in Falmouth along

:12:27. > :12:31.with BBC Radio Cornwall's James Churchfield.

:12:32. > :12:33.Welcome to the National Maritime Museum borrower Party For Pudsey. So

:12:34. > :12:40.many people gathered for this wonderful occasion. The party has

:12:41. > :12:45.already started. There are hundreds of people with us. Let us give you a

:12:46. > :12:50.quick tour of what will be your home for the next few hours. Pudsey is

:12:51. > :12:54.already making himself at home. You can see some of the people that have

:12:55. > :13:08.come along to the party. Ie looking forward to it? `` are you looking

:13:09. > :13:12.forward to it? ALL: Yes! We have our fundraisers here. People

:13:13. > :13:17.who have been doing amazing things. We will hear from some of them a

:13:18. > :13:23.little bit later on. And we have very amazing Children In Need

:13:24. > :13:28.choir. 200 voices will be joining with over 1500 other singers in the

:13:29. > :13:32.main Children In Need programmes singing a very special song. We have

:13:33. > :13:38.heard it in rehearsal this afternoon. We will have a taster,

:13:39. > :13:41.you will not want to miss it. You have been filling out all of the

:13:42. > :13:47.stops fundraising right across the region. Some wonderful and wacky

:13:48. > :13:55.things have been happening. Let us find out what you have been doing

:13:56. > :13:59.across the South West. It is fortunate that we have Children In

:14:00. > :14:15.Need day today, so I can wear my usual attire!

:14:16. > :14:55.I cannot quite believe I am doing this. This is crazy! # Everybody's

:14:56. > :15:04.got a dream. # What do you say, are we making history? # We are only

:15:05. > :15:18.young is we seize the night. # Tonight we own the night. # Tonight

:15:19. > :15:20.we own the night. Writes now she is raising money by

:15:21. > :15:44.being a goalkeeper for charity. # I got something to say.

:15:45. > :15:53.# May your hearts be full of your dreams tonight.

:15:54. > :16:03.# May we sing and dance tiil we lose our minds.

:16:04. > :16:17.# We are only young if we seize the night, tonight we own the night.

:16:18. > :16:26.It's all four a good cause, isn't it!

:16:27. > :16:30.Every year we are astounded by the links that you go to to raise money

:16:31. > :16:35.for children in need. To everyone, we give you a very hearty thank you.

:16:36. > :16:39.If you have raised money, if you have given money. It really will

:16:40. > :16:47.make a difference to the lives of children here in the South West.

:16:48. > :16:55.None more so than the call. She uses a children's hospice in the region.

:16:56. > :17:08.Her mum tells us the story. Nicole is born `` Nicole was born as

:17:09. > :17:16.a normal child, but then we discovered she had a rear syndrome.

:17:17. > :17:22.She is just Nicole. She just does not speak. The most often question I

:17:23. > :17:27.get is, how do you know when she is annoyed? You just know. She does not

:17:28. > :17:35.really display pane, she does not smile, but we just embrace her.

:17:36. > :17:41.She's our little girl and we all love her. All of the children love

:17:42. > :17:45.her. People do not realise that nobody else can look after these

:17:46. > :17:50.children. They have got such specific needs. Everything has to be

:17:51. > :17:54.done right, there is no room for errors. This is what these places

:17:55. > :18:02.are for. There is nobody else they are out of ours who you can phone to

:18:03. > :18:07.say, I am in a mess. Can you help? Of course we can help. The children

:18:08. > :18:10.think it is a big holiday once they get here. The sibling team are

:18:11. > :18:16.brilliant. You cannot ask for a better people. She is treated as a

:18:17. > :18:21.normal person here. None of the children staying at her, and it is

:18:22. > :18:28.nice to see the siblings all playing together. And they are all relaxed.

:18:29. > :18:38.They are all happy. But ultimately you know that it is not going to

:18:39. > :18:42.have a happy ending. So we now know we can come here with her child when

:18:43. > :18:48.that happens. When that happens, we can come here, spend our last time

:18:49. > :18:53.together in a place that is happy and with the sibling team, most

:18:54. > :18:56.importantly, that can support the call's siblings, because they are

:18:57. > :19:02.the most important. `` Nicole's siblings. Getting them to deal with

:19:03. > :19:11.what is going to happen. That reason alone is why these places should be

:19:12. > :19:15.here. I think they are amazing places because when you come in you

:19:16. > :19:22.do not know that any of that is there, you do not know that sad is

:19:23. > :19:26.happening here. People always say, can we help you? This is how you can

:19:27. > :19:35.help us. You can donate. That is how you can help. That is the difference

:19:36. > :19:40.your fundraising makes for Children In Need, helping people like

:19:41. > :19:45.Nicole's family, making a real difference to their lives. We have

:19:46. > :19:51.some checks here, plenty of people out and about. Where are you from

:19:52. > :20:08.and what have you done? We are dressed up in Wix, `` in wigs and

:20:09. > :20:19.Wellington boots. ?868.11. How did you read that? We had peak sales,

:20:20. > :20:34.face painting. We also had the staff in stocks. I bet that was fun! This

:20:35. > :20:47.is 1500 p from B and Q in Cornwall. We have had raffles, cake sales, all

:20:48. > :20:57.of the staff in fancy dress. You get depressed Pudsey's stomach. Nothing

:20:58. > :21:01.has happened! Never mind. Well done to everybody, fabulous effort for

:21:02. > :21:04.fundraising for Children In Need. I'm here with very amazing

:21:05. > :21:13.children's choir. You looking forward to your singing this

:21:14. > :21:15.evening? I probably better not get them to scream to lately because

:21:16. > :21:22.they will lose their voices. Is this your first time saying with a big

:21:23. > :21:28.choir like this? It is one of my first time is doing this live on TV.

:21:29. > :21:31.How much preparation has there been? There have been a lot of

:21:32. > :21:38.rehearsals today, it has been quite tough. But it is all for a good

:21:39. > :21:44.cause. What is it been due to be taking part? It is a really good

:21:45. > :21:49.cause and I am so pleased to be supporting it. I am so glad that it

:21:50. > :21:54.is going to be on TV. Last year it was the third highest point that

:21:55. > :22:03.people paid money out. You will really make a difference, I am sure.

:22:04. > :22:07.How does it make you feel to be here with so many young people? It makes

:22:08. > :22:14.me really happy that we may be helping lots of people. Did you have

:22:15. > :22:22.to be coerced into taking part, as a boy? I really wanted to do it,

:22:23. > :22:27.because I love singing. What does it mean to you to take part? It means a

:22:28. > :22:33.lot to me, because I am really excited. It really is something very

:22:34. > :22:36.special. Make sure you join us for that. Now back to the studio to take

:22:37. > :22:53.a look at the weather. I did make a promise to Pudsey that

:22:54. > :23:00.I would start with Barmouth. `` Falmouth. Although we have a cover

:23:01. > :23:02.of cloud now, by midnight or just after we're going to get

:23:03. > :23:07.temperatures fairly close to freezing. For the next few days we

:23:08. > :23:10.have a fairly quiet spell of weather, it is mainly dry. Some

:23:11. > :23:15.frost and fog around and then turning very much colder next week.

:23:16. > :23:18.Quite a big change for those drops in temperatures. There is the

:23:19. > :23:26.satellite picture from earlier today. That cloud will thin and

:23:27. > :23:31.break earlier today. `` later on. For much of the weekend, we do have

:23:32. > :23:35.a weather system that comes in from the north`west, but that would be a

:23:36. > :23:41.slow progress towards us. Not really arriving until probably overnight

:23:42. > :23:48.and into Monday. He wrote the details. A lot of clear sky to the

:23:49. > :24:02.Easter bus. `` a lot of clear sky to the east of us. PHONE RINGS.

:24:03. > :24:07.I am very sorry, it is my phone. Pudsey, I am doing a live broadcast.

:24:08. > :24:13.Yes, but the book bit silly. I did promise. OK. I made Pudsey a

:24:14. > :24:20.promise, so I'm going to have to wear them. That's better, isn't it?

:24:21. > :24:25.Anyway. Let us get on with the forecast. I mention the clearing

:24:26. > :24:31.skies. They will get clearer later, as a result it will be cold. Quite

:24:32. > :24:37.widespread tonight. It will develop across parts of East Devon. The

:24:38. > :24:40.source of temperatures we can expect a freebie close to freezing for most

:24:41. > :24:48.of the South of England. Through the day tomorrow, a lot of sunshine.

:24:49. > :24:52.Gradually clouding over as the cloud comes and later in the afternoon.

:24:53. > :25:01.That means that we will probably not see a frost tonight, but we will see

:25:02. > :25:12.temperatures of ten or 11 degrees. They are quite fetching, and they!

:25:13. > :25:27.He wrote the times of high water. `` you are. The winds are late through

:25:28. > :25:32.this weekend. Expect a breeze becoming variable. Mainly fear

:25:33. > :25:45.conditions and generally good visibility out to sea. They are
