:00:00. > :00:08.industry. We are back with the late
:00:09. > :00:12.Good evening. Cornwall Council has confirmed it
:00:13. > :00:16.was contacted earlier this year with concerns about a road in Calstock
:00:17. > :00:19.that collapsed on Christmas Day. The landslip at Lower Kelly, in the
:00:20. > :00:23.Cornish Village, has left 30 homes without road access. Residents say
:00:24. > :00:28.they had reported concerns to the council weeks ago. The council is
:00:29. > :00:31.carrying out a full survey of the road but says it appears the land
:00:32. > :00:35.has succumbed to extreme heavy rainfall. Louise Walter reports.
:00:36. > :00:39.People here are nervous and you can see why ` a section of the road
:00:40. > :00:45.collapsed on Christmas Day, and residents claim it's now slipped
:00:46. > :00:50.further. On the day it happened, just part of
:00:51. > :00:55.the road had gone. By Boxing Day, virtually all the road, up to the
:00:56. > :00:59.pavement, has now gone. And they felt it had reached its optimum
:01:00. > :01:02.fall, but a little more did fall that night. So, obviously, we do
:01:03. > :01:08.feel slightly anxious about being here at the moment.
:01:09. > :01:13.?? WHITE Worried, the residents might be. But not surprised. BBC
:01:14. > :01:20.Spotlight has been told the council was made aware of concerns some time
:01:21. > :01:23.ago. It has been reported. We have seen it developing, but we have not
:01:24. > :01:27.seen anything being done about it. Of course, it could have been fixed.
:01:28. > :01:32.If they had been a bit proactive about it, and actually shored it up
:01:33. > :01:35.before it collapsed. Today, Cornwall Council said the
:01:36. > :01:37.area is subject to maintenance inspections, and confirmed that it
:01:38. > :01:41.had been contacted by a resident back in June.
:01:42. > :01:45.We are going back through our records, to look and see if that
:01:46. > :01:49.happened. But as far as this slippage is concerned, this is new
:01:50. > :01:52.to us, and we are dealing with this problem now. That's the priority.
:01:53. > :01:56.And, today, there was a full inspection of the area.
:01:57. > :02:00.I think the option, today, is to see if we can address the failure we
:02:01. > :02:04.have seen behind us, and how we can prevent any further deterioration,
:02:05. > :02:09.or temporary measures we can put in, and move on to look at the permanent
:02:10. > :02:12.solution. With more unsettled weather
:02:13. > :02:15.predicted, Cornwall Council says special contingencies have been put
:02:16. > :02:17.in place to provide emergency cover. And it will arrange for independent
:02:18. > :02:28.structural surveys on five properties next to the landslip.
:02:29. > :02:32.Police and the RSPCA are continuing to search for a deer believed to
:02:33. > :02:35.have been shot with a crossbow in Plymouth. A 25`year`old man was
:02:36. > :02:39.arrested, on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon in
:02:40. > :02:43.a public place, and has been bailed. Police say it's important they find
:02:44. > :02:46.the animal and are appealing for anyone spotting it in or near
:02:47. > :02:51.Plymbridge woods to get in contact. We do have a concern with the
:02:52. > :02:55.welfare of the animal. We need to catch that animal, hopefully alive,
:02:56. > :02:59.and see if we can get it treated. We are working with the RSPCA, and we
:03:00. > :03:03.will call upon the services of a local vet, if we can. If the animal
:03:04. > :03:08.is deceased, we will still need to be able to recover the bolt, to be
:03:09. > :03:13.able to link it to the male that we have arrested.
:03:14. > :03:16.Freed Greenpeace worker Alex Harris has told Spotlight she has no
:03:17. > :03:18.regrets about her involvement with the campaign against drilling for
:03:19. > :03:21.oil in the Arctic. Alex was among 30 people on board
:03:22. > :03:24.the Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise, when it was boarded by the Russian
:03:25. > :03:27.authorities three months ago. The so`called Arctic 30 were detained,
:03:28. > :03:30.and initially faced prison sentences of up to 15 years for alleged piracy
:03:31. > :03:34.and hooliganism. No, I don't regret it. Never once
:03:35. > :03:38.did I regret it. There were moments of panic, and we were isolated ` it
:03:39. > :03:42.was hard, but not once did I regret my decision to join the Arctic
:03:43. > :03:46.Sunrise. I care about saving the Arctic, and I decided to take a
:03:47. > :03:50.stand. I'm proud that I did that. You don't regret the things you do
:03:51. > :03:52.in life, you regret the things you didn't do.
:03:53. > :03:56.She'll chase her career as she wants to, as she's already said. If she
:03:57. > :04:00.feels she needs to do that, she'll do it. But hopefully not in such a
:04:01. > :04:07.dangerous environment, such as she's just gone through. Fingers crossed.
:04:08. > :04:10.Older drivers are the focus of a research project in Dorset to see
:04:11. > :04:14.whether free coaching can reduce their involvement in road accidents.
:04:15. > :04:17.Dorset County Council, which has one of the highest amount of elderly
:04:18. > :04:20.drivers on the road is working with a road safety charity and Warwick
:04:21. > :04:25.University to see whether a series of theory and practical lessons will
:04:26. > :04:29.reduce the county's accidents. The scheme will cost ?6,000 and the
:04:30. > :04:31.initial results will be announced in the Spring.
:04:32. > :04:37.It's been another eventful year in the South West sporting calendar.
:04:38. > :04:40.The region boasted two world champions and an appearance at
:04:41. > :04:43.Wembley. But amongst the success, there was sadness. Spotlight's Dave
:04:44. > :04:48.Gibbins looks back at the past twelve months.
:04:49. > :04:53.It was They had to beat Brentford in the
:04:54. > :04:55.league one play`off final to gain promotion to the second tier of
:04:56. > :04:59.professional football ` the championship. On a Sunday afternoon
:05:00. > :05:02.in May, they duly completed one of their most historic moments, winning
:05:03. > :05:10.2`1. For little old Yeovil, it certainly puts us on the map. There
:05:11. > :05:14.will be a lot more visitors coming to Yeovil, be it for the football,
:05:15. > :05:17.or just to see what's around. Penzance rower Helen Glover added
:05:18. > :05:22.two more titles, this year, to her Olympic gold medal. With new pairs
:05:23. > :05:25.partner Holly Swan, she retained the World Cup trophy after beating
:05:26. > :05:30.allcomers in Sydney, Eton Dorney and and Lucerne. The 27`year`old
:05:31. > :05:35.followed that with her first ever world championship.
:05:36. > :05:39.I don't train to try and keep my unbeaten record, I train to be the
:05:40. > :05:43.best I can be. I don't want it to feel like a pressure for me, but
:05:44. > :05:46.obviously it's a better feeling to win.
:05:47. > :05:49.Plymouth College swimmer Ruta Meilutyte proved she's the best in
:05:50. > :05:53.the world. The 16`year`old Lithuanian became the new 100 metres
:05:54. > :05:58.and world champion in Barcelona, 12 months after winning Olympic gold in
:05:59. > :06:02.London. In the semifinal, Ruta also smashed the world record, which was
:06:03. > :06:09.a prelude to a personal total of 14 golds during 2013. Finally, Cornwall
:06:10. > :06:13.sailor Sir Ben Ainslie's magnificent win for team USA in the Americas
:06:14. > :06:18.cup, after they had trailed 8`1 to New Zealand, was tinged with
:06:19. > :06:21.sadness. He dedicated the famous win to his compatriot, Andrew Simpson,
:06:22. > :06:24.from Sherborne in Dorset, who tragically died in May whilst
:06:25. > :06:33.training for the event and in San Francisco Bay.
:06:34. > :06:36.Dave Gibbins reporting there. And tomorrow we'll look back at the news
:06:37. > :06:38.stories which made 2013. Time for the weather now and here's
:06:39. > :06:59.Emily. Quite a windy day through tomorrow,
:07:00. > :07:03.as well. At the moment, we are in between weather systems, so a
:07:04. > :07:07.quieter start to the night but this weather front is set to sweep into
:07:08. > :07:10.the West, bringing some heavy rains tomorrow morning. That does clear to
:07:11. > :07:14.the east, so we'll have some sunshine to the afternoon on New
:07:15. > :07:20.Year's Eve. More rain and showers for New Year's Day. That rain did
:07:21. > :07:22.clear quite quickly to the east today, so we had some sunshine
:07:23. > :07:27.through the day and generally a dry start to tonight. Tonight, cloud
:07:28. > :07:31.increasing and some sherry rain ahead of that more intense band of
:07:32. > :07:36.rain arriving in the West into the early hours. Strong winds
:07:37. > :07:39.particularly with that rain man, but fairly mild tonight with
:07:40. > :07:43.temperatures no lower than six degrees. That rain will make its way
:07:44. > :07:47.across the region through tomorrow morning, followed by some sunshine
:07:48. > :07:51.and dry weather for the rest of the day. A few showers, and is a more
:07:52. > :07:55.organised showers tomorrow evening will stop quite breezy through the

:08:01. > :08:04.have an early warning out of further heavy rain for New Year's Day.
:08:05. > :08:07.Another weather system moving in on Wednesday which will bring some
:08:08. > :08:13.heavy, persistent rain, along with some strong winds. He prepared for
:08:14. > :08:16.New Year's Day which will bring a risk of flooding. After New Year's
:08:17. > :08:23.Day, still looking unsettled with some sunshine and showers. That's
:08:24. > :08:27.all from the Spotlight news room for now. I'll be back with the late news
:08:28. > :08:38.just before 10:25PM, but for now, enjoy your evening.
:08:39. > :08:45.Another day off strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. At least things
:08:46. > :08:49.are quiet at the moment. The rain has cleared off and the wind is
:08:50. > :08:55.lighter. There might be some ice in Scotland, but through the night, the
:08:56. > :09:00.wind picks up, lifting temperatures, but more heavy rain pushing in. The
