:00:00. > :00:09.on the BBC News Channel. I'm back with the News at Ten. Now it's time

:00:10. > :00:14.Good evening. The Chief Scientist at The Met Office has become a Dame, as

:00:15. > :00:18.women outnumber men on the New Year Honours list for the first time.

:00:19. > :00:21.Julia Slingo was among dozens of other people from the South West

:00:22. > :00:24.recognised by the Queen, today, as Jenny Walrond reports.

:00:25. > :00:27.It's an innocent looking chapel with a murky history ` Salem Chapel in

:00:28. > :00:29.East Budleigh is believed to have played a key role in 18th`century

:00:30. > :00:42.smuggling. I thought it was a speeding fine and

:00:43. > :00:47.didn't open it for a couple of days. When I opened it, there was a letter

:00:48. > :00:50.from the PM's office, advising me that I was being nominated for this

:00:51. > :01:01.British Empire medal, which was a great prize. Bob has raised ?180,000

:01:02. > :01:05.for the RNLI. But in the 1980s, it fell into

:01:06. > :01:09.disrepair. Kathleen Moyle played a key role in its restoration, and for

:01:10. > :01:15.that, she receives a British Empire medal.

:01:16. > :01:19.It belongs to the nation, really. And that's why we want to save it,

:01:20. > :01:24.because it belongs to everybody ` it doesn't belong to East Budleigh.

:01:25. > :01:28.Bad weather has been making the news recently ` now, it's the turn of the

:01:29. > :01:32.forecasters. The chief scientist at Exodus Met Office has been appointed

:01:33. > :01:37.a dame in recognition of her work on weather and climate change.

:01:38. > :01:41.In a sense, it's an endorsement of the science that we do, that we have

:01:42. > :01:45.strived to improve over many years, so that we can give the sorts of

:01:46. > :01:47.weather forecasts that we give now. Others who have been honoured

:01:48. > :01:50.include Diana Lewis, who will receive the British Empire award for

:01:51. > :02:00.founding the North Devon Animal Ambulance. This.

:02:01. > :02:05.And you can find the full Honours list on your BBC news website.

:02:06. > :02:08.Is A woman has died after being swept out to sea off the off the

:02:09. > :02:12.North Devon coast. She was pulled from the water after

:02:13. > :02:14.the two`hour search and rescue operation by both Appledore

:02:15. > :02:17.lifeboats, the Chivenor helicopter and Croyde lifeguards. She was taken

:02:18. > :02:20.to North Devon District Hospital but attempts to revive her were

:02:21. > :02:22.unsuccessful. Her family has been informed.

:02:23. > :02:26.New scanners which can detect fake ID cards will be used at the doors

:02:27. > :02:29.of Plymouth's bars and clubs this New Year's Eve. The move is a

:02:30. > :02:32.further attempt to tackle underage drinking. The technology should also

:02:33. > :02:38.help identify troublemakers who are already banned from nightspots.

:02:39. > :02:42.Spotlight's John Ayres has more. New Year's Eve is one of the busiest

:02:43. > :02:46.nights of the year for the region's bars and clubs. In Plymouth, eight

:02:47. > :02:50.premises will be using this system to weed out people who should not be

:02:51. > :02:54.in the bars. The machine makes up to 15 different

:02:55. > :02:57.checks on every ID. Obviously, the machine will bring more details,

:02:58. > :03:06.rather than door staff, or myself, looking at an ID.

:03:07. > :03:09.It's the first stage of a project to broaden the use of scanners in

:03:10. > :03:12.Plymouth. The system has already been used successfully in Truro and

:03:13. > :03:15.Newquay. The good old human eyeball is pretty

:03:16. > :03:19.good at spotting differences, but this technology means that fake

:03:20. > :03:22.identity that you can buy on the Internet ` which can be hard to

:03:23. > :03:30.identify as fake ` can very quickly be scanned through, and it will

:03:31. > :03:33.throw it out. The project is costing ?28,000 `

:03:34. > :03:46.some of the money helping to fund it has been seized from criminals,

:03:47. > :03:50.under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Given the weather of the closing few

:03:51. > :03:53.weeks of 2013, it may be hard to believe the last 12 months also

:03:54. > :03:56.delivered a heatwave ` with the South West experiencing a

:03:57. > :03:59.particularly dry spell compared with the rest of the UK.

:04:00. > :04:02.And, so, for our large tourism industry, it's been a year to

:04:03. > :04:04.remember. John Danks looks back at the story of the summer.

:04:05. > :04:07.The region's tourism industry enjoyed its best season for five

:04:08. > :04:10.years. An in Hoteliers and businesses reported an increase in

:04:11. > :04:13.the number of European visitors, as well as staycationers. Customers who

:04:14. > :04:23.are normally going away on holiday in the summer are staying around, so

:04:24. > :04:26.I think we've benefited from that. I think most people feel the same way.

:04:27. > :04:29.As temperatures soared into the 80s, The Met office issued heatwave

:04:30. > :04:33.warnings for the south`west. Taking a dip was the preferred way of

:04:34. > :04:36.cooling down for many people ` even for these horses in Cornwall. It's

:04:37. > :04:40.very nice for the horses in summer, because it's very cool and it's

:04:41. > :04:43.exercising all their muscles in a very helpful way. Racehorse trainers

:04:44. > :04:46.have been using it for years. Zoo animals, too, benefited from a

:04:47. > :04:57.soaking ` as did some Spotlight reporters. Irresistible. And the

:04:58. > :05:00.weather was good news for farmers. The quality is a lot better this

:05:01. > :05:04.year ` there's nice big fruit. It doesn't matter if we don't have the

:05:05. > :05:07.rain ` we can irrigate them from underneath, so the fruit is much

:05:08. > :05:11.better. There's a lot more people picking, and there is nice weather,

:05:12. > :05:15.so people come out for a tan and pick strawberries at the same time.

:05:16. > :05:18.So, 2013 produced a sizzling summer. Many are hoping that next year will

:05:19. > :05:21.be just as good. And we'll have a very different

:05:22. > :05:25.weather forecast in just a moment. All four South West Football League

:05:26. > :05:28.teams have a busy New Year's Day, top of the bill the Devon derby

:05:29. > :05:34.between Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United at Home Park. Keelan Lavvery

:05:35. > :05:36.is staying with the Pilgrims for a further month, on loan from

:05:37. > :05:40.Sheffield Wednesday, while the Gulls try to move out of the bottom two

:05:41. > :05:44.places. Tom Nichols aims to continue his scoring form for Exeter City at

:05:45. > :05:46.home to Wycombe Wanderers, and Championship strugglers, Yeovil

:05:47. > :05:54.Town, look for a double over Watford at Huish Park tomorrow night. The

:05:55. > :05:57.and if You might want to listen carefully now ` especially if you're

:05:58. > :05:59.out celebrating tonight ` as promised, Emily is here with the

:06:00. > :06:11.forecast. It about life, we have a few showers

:06:12. > :06:16.across the region. Some drier and clearer weather, so you might be

:06:17. > :06:21.lucky. Fresh winds, quite breezy, particularly around part of the

:06:22. > :06:32.coast. Tomorrow, strong winds on the way. Rain may be heavy. We do have a

:06:33. > :06:38.weather warning from The Met office, gusts of 50 to 60 mph. Unsettled

:06:39. > :06:42.weather. Tonight, and so showers coming in than the West. This other

:06:43. > :06:46.weather system pushing up from the West tonight, arriving in the early

:06:47. > :06:51.hours of the morning, ringing with its a very wet and windy weather.

:06:52. > :06:55.Tonight, heavy showers, with the risk of hail and thunder. Robin

:06:56. > :07:01.nights, perhaps some drier weather at a risk of showers through the

:07:02. > :07:04.night. Quite breezy through the night, but mild. Temperature is no

:07:05. > :07:14.lower than six degrees. The moral morning, persistent rain. ``

:07:15. > :07:21.tomorrow morning. Still quite breezy, quite mild tomorrow, as

:07:22. > :07:25.well. Highs of 11 or 12 degrees. An early warning out for Friday, with

:07:26. > :07:28.some heavy rain and a risk of flooding.

:07:29. > :07:32.And that is it from Spotlight for 2013. We'll see you in 2014. From me

:07:33. > :07:44.and Emily and all Good evening. It looks like mother

:07:45. > :07:49.nature may provide her own pyrotechnics in the run-up to bid

:07:50. > :07:52.night tonight. We have some heavy showers in western parts, starting

:07:53. > :07:58.to ease a bit across Scotland and Northern Ireland. But the showers

:07:59. > :08:02.further south are heavier, with some flashes of lightning as they move

:08:03. > :08:06.eastwards. They do get a bit more hit and miss as we head towards

:08:07. > :08:12.midnight, but a greater chance of getting wet in the south as we move

:08:13. > :08:16.into 2014. Cardiff and London could see heavy downpours. Further north,

:08:17. > :08:25.you could be greeting the New Year on a dry note. A touch of frost in

:08:26. > :08:26.northern and eastern areas going into New Year's Day. A few
