:00:00. > :00:13.An increase in hospital infdction BBC One we join

:00:14. > :00:16.An increase in hospital infdction rates ` cases of Clostridiul

:00:17. > :00:20.Difficile at the Royal Cornwall are double what they should be. Good

:00:21. > :00:23.evening, the region's biggest hospital, Derriford, has also

:00:24. > :00:35.breached its own targets for rates of the infection. If not de`lt with

:00:36. > :00:43.promptly, it can be fatal, particularly in vulnerable patients.

:00:44. > :00:51.The victim of an alleged attempted murder looks into the eyes of his ``

:00:52. > :00:59.her attacker. And a region voted best holhday

:01:00. > :01:02.destination. Two hospitals in the Southwdst have

:01:03. > :01:04.mist their targets for controlling infections in the last year. The

:01:05. > :01:07.Royal Cornwall Hospital and Derriford hospital have had more

:01:08. > :01:12.cases of Clostridium Diffichle than was expected. The infection causes

:01:13. > :01:15.serious gastric problems and can be fatal. At Derriford Hospital in

:01:16. > :01:19.Plymouth there were 34 cases of C`Diff against a target of 25. And

:01:20. > :01:24.at the Royal Cornwall 41 people were infected. The target for thd Truro

:01:25. > :01:32.hospital was 20. Spotlights David George has this report. Rosdmary was

:01:33. > :01:37.admitted to the hospital with a broken leg but died after bdcoming

:01:38. > :01:42.infected with Clostridium Dhfficile. That was six years ago. Her husband

:01:43. > :01:45.and daughter have watched as the number of cases has decreasdd over

:01:46. > :01:51.the years until now. They are disappointed to see them rise again.

:01:52. > :01:56.It is easily detected by tasks in the microbiology labs. It lhves

:01:57. > :01:59.inside of 3% of us but only causes symptoms when other bacteri` are

:02:00. > :02:05.reduced, often due to antibhotic use. The Royal Cornwall Hospital is

:02:06. > :02:11.doubling its efforts to fight the infection. A doctor always records

:02:12. > :02:17.the reason for the prescription and the date in which the antibhotic

:02:18. > :02:22.should be reviewed. This is to emphasise the need for all doctors

:02:23. > :02:28.and all prescribers to be c`reful in antibiotic prescribing. We have had

:02:29. > :02:33.a push on hand hygiene and cleanliness. Doctors say although

:02:34. > :02:37.there has been this increasd in the last year, these have been

:02:38. > :02:43.individual cases and they h`ven t been spread between patients on the

:02:44. > :02:49.wards. That is some comfort to Rosemary's family. It gives us hope

:02:50. > :02:59.that they are controlling it in hospital. To put our minds `t rest,

:03:00. > :03:03.we wanted to know whether it has come into the hospital and not

:03:04. > :03:09.transmitted from patient to patient which was what happened with us At

:03:10. > :03:14.Hereford Hospital they say they are the victims of the tough target

:03:15. > :03:18.regime. They do provide that incentive to get the resources to

:03:19. > :03:25.drive improvements but on the other hand, it is difficult for the public

:03:26. > :03:31.to understand when it looks like you have failed. We are doing work here,

:03:32. > :03:37.we had just had a difficult target to hit. Doctors point out that we

:03:38. > :03:40.can combat C`Diff by regularly washing our hands with simple soap

:03:41. > :03:44.and water. A jury's been told of the ddranged,

:03:45. > :03:47.murderous and so evil eyes of an attacker as he stabbed a wolan

:03:48. > :03:52.repeatedly on the streets of Exeter, after what's claimed to be ` five

:03:53. > :03:55.year campaign of stalking. Giving evidence today, Helen Pearson said

:03:56. > :04:00.she felt let down by Devon `nd Cornwall police for not catching the

:04:01. > :04:04.stalker. Joe Willis admits causing grievous bodily harm, but ddnies

:04:05. > :04:12.attempted murder. Our Home @ffairs Correspondent Simon Hall reports

:04:13. > :04:16.from Exeter Crown Court. Sometimes struggling for words,

:04:17. > :04:22.Helen Pearson on the rights told the jury about the attack. I thought I

:04:23. > :04:26.was going to be killed, she said. I struggled, screamed and ple`ded The

:04:27. > :04:31.look in his eyes was full of murder, so evil and deranged. The

:04:32. > :04:38.prosecution say the attack followed a long campaign of stalking. Her

:04:39. > :04:40.five years of hell. There wdre attacks on her flat and cart with

:04:41. > :04:48.threatening letters and phone calls. She told the jury it

:04:49. > :04:54.dominated her life and was left feeling sick, ill and terrified I

:04:55. > :05:00.had suicidal thoughts, she said I thought it would go on and on. The

:05:01. > :05:04.jury was told she reported lore than 100 incidents of stalking to the

:05:05. > :05:10.police but they failed to fhnd the culprit. She felt let down by that.

:05:11. > :05:12.Her family hired a private investigator in an attempt to stop

:05:13. > :05:19.the stalk about the attacks continued. The stabbing happened

:05:20. > :05:22.last year near Exeter city centre. A witness told the court the lan was

:05:23. > :05:28.armed with a pair of scissors like a dressmaker would use. Miss Pearson

:05:29. > :05:34.told the jury that throughott her ordeal, the attacker did not say a

:05:35. > :05:41.word. The prosecution expected to conclude their case tomorrow. The

:05:42. > :05:44.child is scheduled to end ndxt week. `` the trial is scheduled to end

:05:45. > :05:49.next week. He denies attempted murder.

:05:50. > :05:52.A Plymouth woman has been sdntenced to life imprisonment for murdering

:05:53. > :05:57.her bedridden mother by smothering her with a pillow. The court heard

:05:58. > :06:01.that Angela Douglas views hdrself as a monster for what she had done to

:06:02. > :06:13.73`year`old Anne Matthews and deeply regrets her actions. Philippa Mina

:06:14. > :06:16.reports. 49`year`old Angela Douglas struggled to contain her emotions as

:06:17. > :06:22.the judge delivered his sentence of life imprisonment with a minimum of

:06:23. > :06:25.12 years. The judge told her that the facts of this case were

:06:26. > :06:31.depressingly commonplace and it is a fact of life that many people have

:06:32. > :06:36.to deal with sick elderly and dying relatives. He said, " I don't accept

:06:37. > :06:41.that you were under any mord stress than others. " . It was Aprhl last

:06:42. > :06:46.year when Douglas visit the home of her elderly parents in Plymouth She

:06:47. > :06:50.called to lunch to the family and strength a large amount of `lcohol.

:06:51. > :07:04.Her father and partner went out and she went upstairs and smothdred

:07:05. > :07:07.73`year`old and `` ten 1`macro with a pillow. Her mum was suffering from

:07:08. > :07:09.emphysema and had difficultx breathing and she believes she was

:07:10. > :07:11.carrying out an act of mercx. The judge rejected that this was an

:07:12. > :07:15.assisted suicide. When the paramedics arrived, she told them to

:07:16. > :07:18.let her mother die. Devon and all police recognise the trial has been

:07:19. > :07:37.a highly emotive time for the family and state:

:07:38. > :07:46.The judge recognised Angela Douglas' distress and remorse for

:07:47. > :07:52.what she had done in merger and her mother. Her son called out, "I love

:07:53. > :07:55.you mum, " as she was led from court.

:07:56. > :07:58.A 73`year`old man has died `fter his wheelchair went into the Kingsbridge

:07:59. > :08:01.Estuary. Emergency crews trhed to resuscitate the pensioner after

:08:02. > :08:04.police pulled him from the water late last night. He was airlifted to

:08:05. > :08:06.Derriford Hospital, where hd was later pronounced dead. Officers

:08:07. > :08:10.don't believe the incident was suspicious.

:08:11. > :08:13.It's been revealed the man who's body was found off the Dorsdt coast

:08:14. > :08:17.yesterday was the Vicar of Burton Bradstock. 59`year old`Reverend Bob

:08:18. > :08:22.Thorn had just completed a solo row between Portscatho in Cornw`ll to

:08:23. > :08:26.Branscombe in East Devon. Hhs boat was found yesterday morning at

:08:27. > :08:29.Seatown. Colleagues paid trhbute to him saying "Bob was a remarkable man

:08:30. > :08:32.of incredible determination.' Residents in the East Devon village

:08:33. > :08:35.of Feniton are claiming a vhctory for people power tonight, after

:08:36. > :08:41.plans for more than 200 new homes were turned down. A planning

:08:42. > :08:45.inspector has dismissed thrde appeals by developers. One scheme to

:08:46. > :08:50.build 32 properties has been approved. As Hamish Marshall

:08:51. > :08:59.reports, people in the vill`ge started a fund to help fight the

:09:00. > :09:03.plans. A site many people lhving in Feniton feared they would sde more

:09:04. > :09:06.and more of. Building work goes on here but on three others th`t would

:09:07. > :09:15.have seen more than 200 houses built, it won't be allowed to start.

:09:16. > :09:19.Joe would have had a ringside seat. Land would have been turned over to

:09:20. > :09:24.housing and industrial units. She was one of dozens of villagdrs who

:09:25. > :09:28.fought. They argued there w`s a lack of infrastructure and feared more

:09:29. > :09:33.flooding to an area which h`s suffered on a number of occ`sions in

:09:34. > :09:37.recent years. Sundays we thought we were making headway and othdrs we

:09:38. > :09:44.thought we were going to lose it. Since the enquiry stopped, we have

:09:45. > :09:48.been waiting for the results. It has been like living in limbo. Xou hope

:09:49. > :09:54.and pray it will be the right decision, which it has been. The

:09:55. > :09:56.rejection of the appeals was made by a planning inspector after ` super

:09:57. > :10:18.enquiry. A report said: She approved one set of plans for 32

:10:19. > :10:21.houses saying the benefits would clearly outweigh the harm. This is

:10:22. > :10:27.where they will be built. L`nd which has been developed but it is a small

:10:28. > :10:32.increase in the size of the alleged that could have been the case. 2%

:10:33. > :10:37.would change the village colpletely. We were looking at it turning into

:10:38. > :10:43.Feniton Newtown more than Fdniton village. It required a much broader

:10:44. > :10:47.consultation with the residdnts who should have come to it with full

:10:48. > :10:53.agreement rather than having it forced upon them. The inspector

:10:54. > :10:57.notes a refusal means the loss of affordable housing but camp`igners

:10:58. > :11:02.say her decision proves thex are not NIMBYs. None of the developdrs we

:11:03. > :11:06.contacted would comment. Divers and fishermen say visibility

:11:07. > :11:10.in the sea around the South West is very poor in places and this

:11:11. > :11:13.winter's storms maybe to bl`me. Scientists have been testing the

:11:14. > :11:16.waters around our region after concerns were raised that the sea

:11:17. > :11:20.had a milky appearance. It's thought the storms churned up the sda bed.

:11:21. > :11:29.Our Environment Correspondent Adrian Campbell has been finding ott more.

:11:30. > :11:33.Plymouth Marine laboratory looks at the waters around the south`west

:11:34. > :11:40.using the latest technology that can analyse how much said is in ``

:11:41. > :11:45.sediment is in sea water. On some of the bigger storms in early February,

:11:46. > :11:50.we were recording waves of over 15 metres. The action of these waves

:11:51. > :11:56.has stirred up the sea bed so we are getting fine particles that haven't

:11:57. > :11:59.seen the light of day for htndreds of years Summit `` suspended in the

:12:00. > :12:05.water column. Because they `re small, they are taking a long time

:12:06. > :12:10.to settle out. This satellite image shows how the massive winter storms

:12:11. > :12:14.churned up our seas. The red and yellow show where the water

:12:15. > :12:18.contained the most sediment but this month, things started to calm down

:12:19. > :12:23.although they have got some way to go until they return to the

:12:24. > :12:26.long`term average. The south`west's diving community is concerndd by

:12:27. > :12:32.what has happened, especially in the waters close to rain heading

:12:33. > :12:35.south`west Cornwall. 1 millhon tonnes of dredged material from

:12:36. > :12:41.Devonport dockyard has been deposited over the last dec`de.

:12:42. > :12:47.Keith Hiscock has been diving here for many years. In terms of the

:12:48. > :12:52.Bosch `` offshore reefs, we be expecting ten metres visibility at

:12:53. > :12:56.this time of year. What we `re getting is three metres vishbility.

:12:57. > :13:03.Inshore, we are expecting fhve metres has ability and it is only

:13:04. > :13:07.one metre out there. It could be months before the south`west gets

:13:08. > :13:10.their normal clarity. It is another legacy of the winter's storly

:13:11. > :13:13.weather. A Devon woman says she's furious

:13:14. > :13:17.after waiting nearly a year for a BT phone line. In June last ye`r,

:13:18. > :13:22.Christine Axford from Clawton near Holsworthy put the order in but

:13:23. > :13:26.she's still waiting. Calls to BT to try to resolve the issue ard racking

:13:27. > :13:29.up big bills on her mobile phone. BT has apologised for the delax, saying

:13:30. > :13:39.it's a complex job. Spotlight's North Devon reporter, Andre` Ormsby,

:13:40. > :13:43.has been to investigate. Christine and her husband moved into their new

:13:44. > :13:46.house at the beginning of Ddcember but it was months before th`t in

:13:47. > :13:52.June that they ordered their phone line. Ten months on, nothing but a

:13:53. > :14:00.very big pile of letters. This letter states the plan is to get you

:14:01. > :14:08.up and running by midnight on the 18th of September 2013. We `re still

:14:09. > :14:13.waiting. She has to rely on her mobile phone and it only works in

:14:14. > :14:17.one part of the house. This is my only point of contact at thd moment.

:14:18. > :14:23.I have to come to this window because it is the only placd I get a

:14:24. > :14:27.good reception. My last call was on Friday to BT and I was on the phone

:14:28. > :14:34.for an hour to get an updatd of the order. I can't cope with thdse

:14:35. > :14:39.calls. It is ?6 was my last bill and I dread to think what it wotld be

:14:40. > :14:47.this month. Normally it is `round ?10. After months of confushon, BT

:14:48. > :14:52.says there is a blocked duct which needs to be fixed. I have told them

:14:53. > :14:53.it is a fiasco. If I was running a business like that, we would have

:14:54. > :15:17.gone under by now. For Christine and her husband, it is

:15:18. > :15:25.not quick enough. Their landline still has no dialling tone.

:15:26. > :15:29.In a moment we will find out why Torquay has been voted one of the

:15:30. > :15:34.best places to visit in the UK. We have had exclusive access to

:15:35. > :15:37.swimming coach Jon Rudd as he prepares to train England's

:15:38. > :15:41.Commonwealth Games squad. And it's time to play the music; it's time to

:15:42. > :15:48.light the lights as Taunton's Brewhouse Theatre re`opens tonight.

:15:49. > :15:53.Which is your favourite South West resort? Perhaps it's Newquax or

:15:54. > :15:57.maybe St Ives. It could be Weymouth in Dorset or Croyde in North Devon.

:15:58. > :16:00.Well according to the users of a well known travel website the

:16:01. > :16:04.highest rated resort in the UK is Torquay.

:16:05. > :16:07.It's been described as the third best destination in the country

:16:08. > :16:11.after London and Edinburgh. As Emma Ruminski reports it's an accolade

:16:12. > :16:22.which has been warmly welcoled by those trying to promote Torbay as a

:16:23. > :16:25.holiday resort. London was number one on thd list

:16:26. > :16:33.but it seemed bigger when I was there last. This miniature village

:16:34. > :16:39.is small in stature but it has a big reputation in the rankings. The trip

:16:40. > :16:43.advisor collated the reviews left by visitors to hotels and attr`ctions

:16:44. > :16:48.across the UK for the last xear Torquay came third after London and

:16:49. > :16:52.Edinburgh in the best destination category. We undertook rese`rch

:16:53. > :16:59.which showed how people look at a possible hotel and then go `nd look

:17:00. > :17:03.at reviews and then go on to balk. Cost `` customer comment is more

:17:04. > :17:12.important than what a busindss has about a business. It has to compete

:17:13. > :17:19.with places like London. Whx has it done so well in a list dominated by

:17:20. > :17:24.big cities? It is one of those destinations on the rise. L`st year

:17:25. > :17:28.it was eighth in the UK. Ond of the reasons is partly that it is a

:17:29. > :17:31.gateway to the south`west and we know how popular that is with

:17:32. > :17:37.tourists both domestically `nd internationally. Torquay has a lot

:17:38. > :17:44.to offer and it is one of only two seaside destinations to makd the UK

:17:45. > :17:48.ten. Overall bookings are estimated to be slightly down this Easter

:17:49. > :17:53.after recent storms and real problems. They hope this good

:17:54. > :18:00.publicity will turn into more visitors. It will be beneficial for

:18:01. > :18:05.the desert `` resort. We ard delighted that we will be fdatured

:18:06. > :18:13.so prominently. There are some tables that Torquay is never really

:18:14. > :18:17.destined to top but I hear the stadium is overrated anyway.

:18:18. > :18:18.Well you've been emailing your comments and posting on sochal

:18:19. > :18:59.media. The Commonwealth Games swimling

:19:00. > :19:02.trials have started today, with Plymouth Leander head coach Jon Rudd

:19:03. > :19:06.leading England's bid for mddals in Glasgow this July. He's famdd for

:19:07. > :19:18.producing top class swimmers, including Olympic and World champion

:19:19. > :19:20.Ruta Meilutyte. Jon has givdn Spotlight exclusive access to his

:19:21. > :19:30.work, but as Dave Gibbins discovered, it was an extrelely

:19:31. > :19:40.early start to the day. Good morning. This is a mid mornhng at

:19:41. > :19:43.5:15am. Why do you start so early? It is the only time we can get a

:19:44. > :19:56.decent training session in before they have to be at university and

:19:57. > :20:04.school. Jon Rudd's swimmers want to be the best. They visit herd five

:20:05. > :20:09.days a week. There is anothdr two hours in Nepal following thdir

:20:10. > :20:13.day's studies. Each one of them is different. They are of diffdrent

:20:14. > :20:18.ages and come from different countries. Some have exams, some

:20:19. > :20:23.have university and they do things at different times. It can `ffect

:20:24. > :20:27.the way they train and compdte. It is quite important for me to know

:20:28. > :20:35.them as individuals so I can respond to those changes in their lhves and

:20:36. > :20:40.help them through. Queen of the pool is Ruta Meilutyte, a 16`year`old

:20:41. > :20:47.Lithuanian who lives in Plylouth, swims in Plymouth and swims for

:20:48. > :20:55.Plymouth Leander. They use interesting techniques. This is

:20:56. > :21:01.assisted speed. These guys `re drop`dead sprinters. They do the

:21:02. > :21:09.shortest events. After the training, John is back at his base in Plymouth

:21:10. > :21:13.College to iron out problems. Do you provide any drug testing on your

:21:14. > :21:20.products? He has a relaxation period. I am pretty good at

:21:21. > :21:26.sleeping, it just isn't necdssarily at the right time. I will sdttle

:21:27. > :21:30.down on an evening and start watching a movie and I alwaxs miss

:21:31. > :21:34.the second half. While he rtns around come his woman is always

:21:35. > :21:42.think of success and he won't accept anything less.

:21:43. > :21:45.There's a couple of key gamds in tonights football. Yeovil Town could

:21:46. > :21:48.improve their chances of escaping relegation from the Championship if

:21:49. > :21:51.they win at Charlton Athlethc, who are just three points above them.

:21:52. > :21:55.And in League Two, nothing less than a victory at Newport County will do

:21:56. > :21:59.for Plymouth Argyle who are losing ground on the play`offs. Thdre'll be

:22:00. > :22:03.live coverage on BBC Radio Devon and BBC Somerset.

:22:04. > :22:08.One of Somerset's premier theatres re`opens tonight ` more than a year

:22:09. > :22:12.after it's funding dried up. The Brewhouse in Taunton is now being

:22:13. > :22:16.run by a community group who are convinced they can make it work

:22:17. > :22:20.The Scout and Guide Gang Show will bring the curtain up on the new look

:22:21. > :22:30.theatre. Clinton Rogers has been to see final rehearsals. You h`ve spent

:22:31. > :22:38.so long rehearsing for this. It is the 25th anniversary of the Taunton

:22:39. > :22:43.gang show. In spite of what they say, it is not curtain down, it is

:22:44. > :22:48.curtain up on the newly reopened Brewhouse Theatre. The first live

:22:49. > :22:53.show here for more than a ydar. No pressure. You are worried bdcause

:22:54. > :23:03.you don't want to get it wrong. There is a bit of pressure. We have

:23:04. > :23:10.to make people know that thd Brewhouse Theatre is open. Those in
