:02:31. > :02:34.First this report. A day had in Cornwall turns to disaster. More
:02:35. > :02:39.than 50 people were on this coach as it headed towards loo. At about one
:02:40. > :02:42.o'clock, something went wrong. It looks like the coach crashed into
:02:43. > :02:49.the wall and hedge further up and came to stop here. From what
:02:50. > :02:52.passengers were saying, it ended up from almost turning over and the
:02:53. > :02:58.driver managed to get it back on its wheels before it could tip over. If
:02:59. > :03:01.it had done that it would have come down the hill on its side which
:03:02. > :03:06.would have caused a lot more loss of life. The collision was declared a

:05:05. > :05:07.gathering evidence from the road surface and the vehicle itself, just
:05:08. > :05:12.to establish what has happened. We have got the driver of the coach who
:05:13. > :05:16.is in custody. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by
:05:17. > :05:21.dangerous driving. Have you any indication what might have caused
:05:22. > :05:24.the accident? No, it is a bit early. We are still getting witness
:05:25. > :05:35.statements and we will be able to get a clearer picture. Take us
:05:36. > :05:38.through events as they unfolded today. What scene greeted you as you
:05:39. > :05:40.arrive? It was shortly before one o'clock this afternoon. The coach
:05:41. > :05:44.was travelling down the hill. The majority of passengers were able to
:05:45. > :05:48.get off themselves. There were a large tub of ambulance crew here and
:05:49. > :05:52.they were trying to get people off the coach. There were 13 serious

:06:01. > :06:08.joined by air ambulance crews from Devon and Cornwall and also some air
:06:09. > :06:13.ambulance crews. One of the patients died before they got a hospital.
:06:14. > :06:17.Tell us what happened before you came to the scene? I was working in
:06:18. > :06:22.my garden, overlooking the road. I heard the coach stop on heard voices
:06:23. > :06:25.and I assumed there were sheep on the road or something and when I
:06:26. > :06:29.looked I saw the coach with a broken windscreen and it was obvious it was
:06:30. > :06:39.more serious. We called 999 and I came down to direct traffic, because
:06:40. > :06:41.it is a busy road. Once they were getting passengers off we help them
:06:42. > :06:45.around to the offices where we gave them cups of tea and sat down while
:06:46. > :06:48.they awaited a coach to take them on. What that passengers tell you
:06:49. > :06:53.about what happened? They said the coach was out of control in one way
:06:54. > :06:58.or another and that people slid around and as the windows broke they
:06:59. > :07:04.were showered in broken glass. A lot seemed very stoic. Some had
:07:05. > :07:09.scratches and bruises. They were all quite elderly, so we were concerned.
:07:10. > :07:16.This is quite a steep hill and winding road. What is this road like
:07:17. > :07:20.generally, as someone who lives here? It is a nightmare. We have
:07:21. > :07:25.been working long and hard as a parish council with the county
:07:26. > :07:30.council to try and get a speed limit. Cornwall so says no, it
:07:31. > :07:34.doesn't need it. We said a few months ago, is it going to take
:07:35. > :07:39.fatalities to make a difference? It is a 60 limit, vehicles see it as a
:07:40. > :07:44.target rather than a limit. Although the top piece of road is flat and
:07:45. > :07:49.straight, they do not believe the reduced speed signs and try and come
:07:50. > :07:53.down here at 60. It is important to point out at this stage that speed
:07:54. > :07:59.is not clearly a factor at the moment? We don't know. We have heard
:08:00. > :08:03.from what witnesses have said, we need to take statements and we have
:08:04. > :08:07.to have the coach examined to make sure there are no defects, but it is
:08:08. > :08:11.something I will be looking into. I mentioned the scale of the response.
:08:12. > :08:19.In terms of that, how would you describe it? Huge. The Ambulance
:08:20. > :08:23.Services declared at a major incident as they had to get in
:08:24. > :08:27.specialist teams. We are talking 50 casualties potentially. Having said
:08:28. > :08:30.earlier on that you have been campaigning for a change in the
:08:31. > :08:37.speed limit, what happens in terms of your campaign? Sadly we will use
:08:38. > :08:41.this incident as more proof that we need a speed limit and restrictions
:08:42. > :08:45.on this road. Otherwise, this is going to continue and with the other
:08:46. > :08:50.road closed because of the repair works, this is the main route into
:08:51. > :08:54.Lou and an incident like this closes it for many hours. That is what we
:08:55. > :09:06.are worried about and we do not want any more fatalities. We live here.
:09:07. > :09:13.Thank you very much for joining us. Joining us is the local MP from
:09:14. > :09:17.Westminster. I can understand exactly what they are saying about
:09:18. > :09:22.the dangerous nature of the bend. I drive it regularly and it is, when
:09:23. > :09:31.you are local and you know it is approaching as you go along the
:09:32. > :09:36.straight piece, then you do slow down, but if the residents want my
:09:37. > :09:43.support to try to get a reduced speed limit on that road, I will
:09:44. > :09:47.certainly support them 100%. Were you aware of their concerns before
:09:48. > :09:52.today? No, I wasn't. They have clearly written to their local
:09:53. > :09:55.councillor, but I haven't received any communications from anybody
:09:56. > :10:01.about trying to get that speed limit reduced. I'd like to offer my
:10:02. > :10:07.condolences to the families of the people who have sadly lost their
:10:08. > :10:13.lives and the injured as well. And also, my thanks to the emergency

:10:17. > :10:21.like this happen. But we do have to make sure that we do everything we
:10:22. > :10:27.possibly can to prevent this from happening again. What will you be

:19:43. > :19:46.passengers on board the coach earlier today have arrived back in
:19:47. > :19:50.Exmouth. Emotional scenes as they arrived back home. You can tell,
:19:51. > :20:02.looking at these pictures, how upsetting the event has been for
:20:03. > :20:04.many of the people on board as they were reunited today with their
:20:05. > :20:09.family and their loved ones. A short time ago we heard from age concern
:20:10. > :20:14.in Exmouth. Devastating for the people concerned. Shock from the

:20:49. > :20:52.warned the authorities that it would take a fatality before anything was

:21:08. > :21:11.tonight that they are still investigating all possible causes

:21:51. > :21:54.and dry day. We will see plenty in the way of sunshine. In the lighter
:21:55. > :21:57.winds it is feeling warmer as well. If you take a look at the big
:21:58. > :22:02.picture it you can see the cloud to the eastern side of the UK. For us,
:22:03. > :22:07.we have not fared too badly. There is an area to the south`west, not

:22:38. > :22:42.Islands, a bit better today. It was earlier here in Jersey where we saw
:22:43. > :22:50.a baby dry day. The Queen's baton relay was making its way around the

:22:55. > :23:00.will see lighter winds tomorrow. Back to Exeter, a bit more in the

:24:01. > :24:07.Temperatures reaching up to 18 degrees further to the east. The
