:00:00. > 3:59:59That's it for now. We're back with the late news at 10. 15pm. Now it's

:00:00. > :00:11.time for the news where the late news at 10. 15pm. Now it's

:00:12. > :00:16.Good evening. Hospital workers have been marching through Truro over

:00:17. > :00:19.plans to privatise some services. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust

:00:20. > :00:22.has put the contract for non`clinical jobs such as cleaning

:00:23. > :00:24.and portering out to private tender. Unions fear services could suffer.

:00:25. > :00:35.Spotlight's John Ayres has more. This protest is about so`called

:00:36. > :00:39.hotel services in hospitals. That's things like laundry, the switchboard

:00:40. > :00:42.and security. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, which covers West

:00:43. > :00:49.Cornwall, St Michael's and Treliske, has put these services out to

:00:50. > :00:53.private tender. Staff aren't happy. I signed up with the NHS and I want

:00:54. > :00:58.to retire with the NHS. To me, we all look after the patients. If it

:00:59. > :01:02.wasn't for the cleaners, there would be no hospitals. No ifs, no buts, no

:01:03. > :01:08.public service cuts! Three companies have submitted tenders. The trust is

:01:09. > :01:12.not considering an in`house bid. Staff jobs will transfer to the new

:01:13. > :01:16.operator. The unions fear both other services and the workers' terms and

:01:17. > :01:20.conditions will suffer. I worry about infection rates on the ward as

:01:21. > :01:31.they try and make cutbacks to make profit for shareholders. It's going

:01:32. > :01:34.to be driven by profits, not what's right for the patients. The Royal

:01:35. > :01:37.Cornwall Hospitals Trust told the BBC that its focus is on making the

:01:38. > :01:40.right decision to provide high quality and value`for`money

:01:41. > :01:43.services. It says that, at this time of extreme pressure on both NHS and

:01:44. > :01:47.the public sector, it would be irresponsible not to consider all

:01:48. > :01:54.the options. It says it has freely discussed and shared information the

:01:55. > :01:58.staff from the outset. `` with staff. The bids will be discussed at

:01:59. > :02:01.the end of the month. The new contract is expected to start in the

:02:02. > :02:04.autumn. Official figures show that Cornwall

:02:05. > :02:08.is lagging behind Poland and Lithuania, despite years of

:02:09. > :02:11.investment. The Eurostat figures reveal the county is as poor as it

:02:12. > :02:17.was when it first attracted special European funding. This report from

:02:18. > :02:20.Tamsin Melville. Since the decline of Cornwall's

:02:21. > :02:24.traditional industries, the economy has struggled. Despite around ?1

:02:25. > :02:30.billion of Euro aid since the late 90s, it remains the poorest region

:02:31. > :02:43.in the UK. This smart building is partly funded by European money.

:02:44. > :02:47.Today, it's hosting a business fare. Let's go in and find out what people

:02:48. > :02:50.here think the EU has done for Cornwall. A quick poll of business

:02:51. > :02:53.fair delegates was almost unanimous ` the EU has been good for Cornwall.

:02:54. > :02:56.For some businesses, it has been crucial to staying local. I doubt

:02:57. > :03:00.very much if we would have achieved anywhere near the kind of success we

:03:01. > :03:04.have. To be honest with you, I think we would have had to move to London

:03:05. > :03:07.or another part of Europe. There are a number of flagship projects `

:03:08. > :03:10.Newquay airport, the Eden Project, superfast broadband. But with the

:03:11. > :03:12.county unable to go it alone, are the EU hand`outs really working? In

:03:13. > :03:16.Camborne, some are not very positive. I don't feel any benefit

:03:17. > :03:23.from it. Why not? Well, I just don't. The thing that will improve

:03:24. > :03:27.Cornwall is, you know, more jobs. On all sides of the EU debate, it's

:03:28. > :03:34.hoped the next funding round will be the last slice of European aid that

:03:35. > :03:38.needs to come Cornwall's way. And you can see more on that story

:03:39. > :03:44.on the Sunday Politics at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, here on BBC One.

:03:45. > :03:46.On to sport now and, in rugby, Cornwall's hopes of reaching

:03:47. > :03:48.Twickenham for the second year running have improved, following a

:03:49. > :03:57.win against Gloucestershire at Camborne today. It ended 33`27. They

:03:58. > :04:00.now have to beat Hertfordshire next weekend to reach the final.

:04:01. > :04:07.Elsewhere, Devon went down to Kent 17`34 at Brixham.

:04:08. > :04:11.Time now for the weather, and plenty of sunshine for today but will it

:04:12. > :04:15.stay? Here's Emily. Hello. We do have some more sunshine

:04:16. > :04:19.to come tomorrow. Fine and dry through the night with some clear

:04:20. > :04:23.skies and a fine end to the day. A little cloud here and there through

:04:24. > :04:26.the night. Light winds. One or two mist patches by tomorrow morning but

:04:27. > :04:36.temperatures in many places now lower than between nine and 12

:04:37. > :04:39.degrees. `` no lower. We will see some sunshine tomorrow morning. To

:04:40. > :04:42.the west, some more cloud through the day. Some high clouds turning

:04:43. > :04:45.the sunshine more hazy. But looks like it should remain dry through

:04:46. > :04:48.Sunday. It will feel quite warm as well, with temperatures reaching 19

:04:49. > :04:51.or 20. For Monday, it becomes more unsettled. We see some showers and

:04:52. > :04:55.longer spells of rain. We continue with unsettled weather for the rest

:04:56. > :04:59.of the week. Not quite as warm as well.

:05:00. > :05:01.And that's all for now. We're back again tomorrow at ten to seven.

:05:02. > :05:10.Whatever you're doing, enjoy your evening.

:05:11. > :05:19.Good evening. Who needs an expensive holiday? Today at 24 degrees,

:05:20. > :05:23.Suffolk was warmer than Ibiza and Crete. There was lots of warm

:05:24. > :05:26.sunshine to be found across England and Wales. Of course, that hasn't

:05:27. > :05:28.been the story everywhere. Cooler and cloudier
