:00:28. > :00:34.cancelled. Good evening. Increasingly muddy conditions have
:00:35. > :00:37.made a massive blow for the show. Saturday is traditionally the
:00:38. > :00:43.busiest day. It was a difficult decision for the organisers. We are
:00:44. > :00:52.sorry to announce that for the fostering of, we have been forced to
:00:53. > :01:02.cancel the Devon County Show. Also, dealing political ground, UKIP have
:01:03. > :01:11.three new councils. Labour also called Exeter, while elsewhere that
:01:12. > :01:15.is no overall control. The organisers of the Devon County
:01:16. > :01:22.Show have cancelled the model's final day. It is the fostering of
:01:23. > :01:27.history it has closed. Car parks became increasingly muddy and there
:01:28. > :01:32.was concern about safety. The decision was taken this afternoon
:01:33. > :01:36.when he was realised that parking would be virtually impossible to
:01:37. > :01:43.model. At four o'clock this afternoon, vehicles were being taken
:01:44. > :01:53.out. Some of the cars stone we can spectators continued to enjoy the
:01:54. > :02:00.show, unaware of the problems. Just after 4:30pm was an announcement. We
:02:01. > :02:04.are sorry to announce that for the fostering of all we have been forced
:02:05. > :02:12.to cancel this day of the Devon County Show. Apologies for the same
:02:13. > :02:16.problems. I am joined by the Devon County Show's secretary. What
:02:17. > :02:25.happened this afternoon to make this decision? As we went through the
:02:26. > :02:37.day, the car parks would be becoming unusable. The management met this
:02:38. > :02:39.entertain in order to advise our entertain in order to advise our
:02:40. > :02:50.visitors that we could not be opened. We also had the decline in
:02:51. > :02:54.place, everybody on the ground, the huge army of volunteers, we needed
:02:55. > :03:03.to make sure that they were advised in the correct manner. It was very
:03:04. > :03:12.muddy. That have been some accidents today. Was it safe to go`ahead
:03:13. > :03:22.today? This morning that was good. We were happy. However, we don't get
:03:23. > :03:28.a contingency and poise. For tractors to come and effort was
:03:29. > :03:37.needed. The rain campaign did everything this morning. What sort
:03:38. > :03:44.of the setback is this? It is heartbreaking. Everybody as too
:03:45. > :03:54.emotional to give you a straightforward, pragmatic comment.
:03:55. > :03:59.Financially, I know it as an poison to talk about that at the moment,
:04:00. > :04:09.but what financial implications will be be? Will that be compensation for
:04:10. > :04:18.people who have been treating here? Priority is to close the show and
:04:19. > :04:25.close it safely. The tree does have had two days of very good trade. At
:04:26. > :04:35.least they have had two days. As far as finance, the board will meet in
:04:36. > :04:49.due course. For information or comment. Thank you for joining us.
:04:50. > :04:55.Today has been another busy and enjoyable day. We will be reflecting
:04:56. > :04:58.on that later. But frost the rest of the news.
:04:59. > :05:01.Labour gains and three council seats for UKIP, as the results are counted
:05:02. > :05:05.In Exeter, Labour retained control, increasing its majority.
:05:06. > :05:08.In Weymouth and Portland, Labour replaced the conservatives as
:05:09. > :05:13.the biggest group, but the council remains under no overall control.
:05:14. > :05:15.Labour also retained control of Plymouth City Council
:05:16. > :05:21.Spotlight's Political Editor, Martyn Oates joins us now
:05:22. > :05:41.This has been a good day for Labour. But if you start beneath the
:05:42. > :05:56.surface, in Exeter, the party had cause for celebration as we report.
:05:57. > :06:09.The selection was about to deliver some shocks. We've lost three of its
:06:10. > :06:15.to UKIP. It has always been about the airport. Today, for a female
:06:16. > :06:27.UKIP candidate to get in, it is fantastic. UKIP denied that this was
:06:28. > :06:34.a flash in the pan. It is a four party system now. The party came
:06:35. > :06:42.second in 12 of the 19 walls being contested. Was this a warning shot
:06:43. > :06:48.for Labour and the Conservatives? Some of the votes have gone to them
:06:49. > :06:54.but I suspect they will combat eventually, at the next general
:06:55. > :06:58.election. It is more important to listen to voters so what we have
:06:59. > :07:03.been doing is going out and speaking to more photos than ever before.
:07:04. > :07:10.We've contain overall control of the council and DDC NP constituency that
:07:11. > :07:20.they are hoping to win back from the Conservatives at the next general
:07:21. > :07:27.election. Food for thought for both Labour and
:07:28. > :07:30.the Conservatives. In terms of UKIP running council was very close. We
:07:31. > :07:36.do now have another report. As today went on, this became
:07:37. > :07:40.a familiar sight ` Labour success. It won ten of the 13 seats
:07:41. > :07:44.contested, making three gains. It gives Labour 27
:07:45. > :07:51.of the 40 councillors in the city. These things all add up
:07:52. > :07:53.in people's minds. If you go to some other places in
:07:54. > :07:59.Devon, it's not such a good story. We've always believed in growth
:08:00. > :08:02.and creating jobs. As counting gathered speed,
:08:03. > :08:08.the pattern was set. That spelled defeat
:08:09. > :08:12.for the Conservative group leader. Yolanda Henson's
:08:13. > :08:15.personal wasn't enough. Her party is now left with just
:08:16. > :08:19.a quarter of the 40 seats But they didn't come out
:08:20. > :08:33.and vote for me and that's politics, The only good moment for the
:08:34. > :08:38.Lib Dems ` they lost two of the Not so long ago they were
:08:39. > :08:42.the largest party. UKIP didn't win any seats,
:08:43. > :08:47.but the party is said to be Before people cast their votes in
:08:48. > :08:53.these ballot boxes yesterday, Labour was virtually assured of retaining
:08:54. > :08:57.control of Exeter City Council. But the three gains it's made means
:08:58. > :09:21.the party has really strengthened And we moved, traditionally one of
:09:22. > :09:25.the region's three recon taste, we've replaced the Conservatives as
:09:26. > :09:26.one of the biggest groups. But it was not enough for them to gain
:09:27. > :09:38.overall control. Election results always used to
:09:39. > :09:40.emerge from the darkness, but the count here is now at a more
:09:41. > :09:49.civilised hour. 1pm, not 1am! And And light is being shed on
:09:50. > :09:52.the state of the parties, one year This is not a mini general election,
:09:53. > :09:57.but it is a place ` unusually for the South West `
:09:58. > :10:00.where the two biggest parties The last time the seats here were up
:10:01. > :10:06.for grabs was on the same day Then,
:10:07. > :10:09.the Conservatives steamed ahead. We set ourselves a target
:10:10. > :10:15.of two gains, It makes us the largest group
:10:16. > :10:19.on the council here, now. And in a further reflection
:10:20. > :10:22.of the picture across the country, UKIP made inroads, taking the
:10:23. > :10:25.party's first seat on the council. We've already got
:10:26. > :10:30.about 93 councillors elected. An exchange of seats means the
:10:31. > :10:38.Lib Dems hold their own, but still And election night ` or day `
:10:39. > :10:43.results have produced a hung council here, since the
:10:44. > :10:47.local authority was formed in 1974. The parallels with the current state
:10:48. > :10:51.of the Westminster parties continue. But where the Conservatives lost out
:10:52. > :10:54.to Labour, The party didn't even field
:10:55. > :10:59.candidates in those seats, presenting the Tories with
:11:00. > :11:02.a much more complex problem The role be more confident on the
:11:03. > :11:33.Sunday politics. The US Coastguard says it will
:11:34. > :11:36.suspend its search for a British yacht
:11:37. > :11:38.in the Atlantic Ocean early tomorrow The four crew on board the
:11:39. > :11:43.Cheeki Rafiki haven't been seen Two members of the team are
:11:44. > :11:46.from Somerset ` The RAF has promised to continue
:11:47. > :11:49.searching for a further 24 hours after the US
:11:50. > :11:53.coastguard search is called off. There's speculation the Bantham

:11:57. > :12:00.for an asking price The National Trust has told the BBC
:12:01. > :12:04.it's discussing what role it could play in helping protect the area
:12:05. > :12:08.from development ` but it would need Tomorrow is a massive day
:12:09. > :12:14.for Cornish rugby, as they aim for a second successive County
:12:15. > :12:17.Championship final at Twickenham. Our Sports reporter Brent Pilnick
:12:18. > :12:20.has been to see how they have been preparing
:12:21. > :12:32.for their final qualifying match. Just 80 minutes of rugby set in the
:12:33. > :12:39.Cornwall from another final. After two successive victories, they know
:12:40. > :12:45.that the result at Hartford shocked a model will send them back to
:12:46. > :12:54.Twickenham. The pressure has been years since the costume. Cornwall
:12:55. > :13:02.expect, the supporters expect, the team to do well. And they have done
:13:03. > :13:07.well. They have cost other teams on the way to the scheme. The top
:13:08. > :13:17.scored lots is the old rivalries will be set aside. We are becoming
:13:18. > :13:21.more friendly. But that does not sure when we play each other. We
:13:22. > :13:27.have a good laugh about it when we come together. The team training
:13:28. > :13:30.behind me and they know that a draw will be good enough to take them to
:13:31. > :14:04.Twickenham. They are just focusing on effectively.
:14:05. > :14:07.Back to the Devon County Show. Basically, Asian hornets have been
:14:08. > :14:14.making very here some beekeepers are clearly concerned. It is only a
:14:15. > :14:24.matter of time before they arrive here. The Asian hornets can eat up
:14:25. > :14:33.to 40 B is inhuman. They have the capacity to wait out the species.
:14:34. > :14:41.They weigh nearly entrance to the beehive and then Deveronvale pre`.
:14:42. > :14:53.They have had a difficult time. This is a new survey. Asian hornets have,
:14:54. > :14:57.to Europe via France and Spain. They are now on the other side of the
:14:58. > :15:02.English Channel. Experts say it will not be long before they come to
:15:03. > :15:14.Britain. These pictures show how the Asian hornets get ready for an
:15:15. > :15:21.attack. These people are beekeepers. They are saying that the Asian
:15:22. > :15:41.hornets will sit outside and just trap the bees. We will have to put
:15:42. > :15:52.out some traps. People are concerned about the Asian hornets. There is
:15:53. > :16:14.information here to kill people. Dash`mac help people. The use of
:16:15. > :16:22.traps to catch them very important. The Asian hornets are coming. It is
:16:23. > :16:23.simply a matter of time. There was a royal visitor to the
:16:24. > :16:26.show today. The Duke of Kent was at show today. The Duke of Kent was at
:16:27. > :16:37.the Devon County Show. Day two, and the stars of the show

:17:53. > :17:55.of the afternoon! The Duke of Kent made
:17:56. > :17:58.his first visit to the show. He met members of the Armed Forces,
:17:59. > :18:01.and 89`year`old D`Day veteran He was
:18:02. > :18:05.an interesting person to meet. The Duke then joined the public to

:18:11. > :18:24.on the head from the Duke. His shoes were clean
:18:25. > :18:48.when he got here. 12 months ago I was approached and
:18:49. > :18:55.asked if I could judge the sausage competition. Tell me what is
:18:56. > :19:23.required. This is a very good sausage. Where to get started. You
:19:24. > :19:30.do the tasting. I would give it a six out of ten for an appearance.
:19:31. > :19:55.Several more to go. Anybody for sausage? I can see one smiling at
:19:56. > :20:12.me. I am going to have that one. I do not think that one is cooked.
:20:13. > :20:24.What do you want to do now? Get off! I have never eaten so much sausage.
:20:25. > :20:41.I might need to loosen my belt. Do you ever get fed up eating sausage?
:20:42. > :20:51.Never. The sausage has got the rates and idioms. Here is the overall
:20:52. > :21:02.champion. Congratulations. You have won the best sausage ensure. They
:21:03. > :21:14.have all, though very well. It was a clear shot to tasting.
:21:15. > :21:21.You make an excellent judge. It is a serious business. It was great fun.
:21:22. > :21:38.I do not fancy eating sausage for a while. You should add some fruit and
:21:39. > :21:42.vegetable to your diet. Five IDE... People are talking about going up to
:21:43. > :22:03.seven pieces of fruit and vegetable at these.
:22:04. > :22:08.They are of. At eights new's peace. This is a sporting oddity. We are
:22:09. > :22:20.going to be point the word fruit and vegetable championships. It is just
:22:21. > :22:46.like playing balls. Here are the weapons. The morn. That is not bad.
:22:47. > :22:56.And courage in. Back at the race, it is all go. Organisers say it is the
:22:57. > :23:07.noun is bananas but it also has a serious point. Anybody could become
:23:08. > :23:21.the champion. I have seen people, and take part and they have been
:23:22. > :23:40.printed on the CV. After three minutes, this snail has gone for it.
:23:41. > :23:52.You vegetable. Here is the weather. Bruce. The ten. You never know what
:23:53. > :24:02.you are going to say next. If you have just joined us, sadly this is
:24:03. > :24:05.the last day of the Devon County Show. Let's get the weather
:24:06. > :24:22.forecast. We have seen some unsettled
:24:23. > :24:31.conditions. But it is an improving picture. We have a mate of this
:24:32. > :24:38.warning and that this for tomorrow. Particularly for part of Somerset
:24:39. > :24:49.and Dorset. We have got more pleasure. More of the same for
:24:50. > :24:55.tomorrow. Here is the satellite picture. You can see the showers,
:24:56. > :25:01.they have been coming around but at the moment there are not too many.
:25:02. > :25:12.One of two showers continuing. Many of us looking at the dry night. Nine
:25:13. > :25:22.to 11 degrees. And earlier of heavy and thundery rain tomorrow. It will
:25:23. > :25:38.become more show ready. We are all at risk. She will showers on the
:25:39. > :26:02.items. Here are the times for high water. And for the macro to, here
:26:03. > :26:08.are the numbers. If we take a look at the coastal waters, it is
:26:09. > :26:15.increasing at times and we will find rain and showers. Thereafter, we
:26:16. > :26:25.have got the songs are through tomorrow morning. It does improve
:26:26. > :26:36.eventually. On Monday, it should be dried and played. An improving
:26:37. > :26:46.story. Thank you. We are at the Devon
:26:47. > :26:55.County Show. The show is cancelled tomorrow. But people who have come
:26:56. > :27:07.here today have had some fun. This is very sad news. We will leave you
:27:08. > :27:24.with this performance. Let's look at the history
:27:25. > :28:00.of BBC TWO with me, Simon Schama.
