:00:00. > 3:59:59indecent assault against women an$ children. That's all fpom the BBC

:00:00. > :00:09.children. That's all from the BBC News.

:00:10. > :00:13.An apology from South West Water as raw sewage was discharged

:00:14. > :00:16.into the sea during a surfing contest Good evenhng.

:00:17. > :00:19.The company says, heavy rain overwhelmed its system.

:00:20. > :00:23.There are now calls for mord to be done to prevent it happening again.

:00:24. > :00:27.A unique approach to dealing with hate crime.

:00:28. > :00:33.We'll hear from local heroes working with victims to tackle abusd.

:00:34. > :00:37.And the giant jellyfish turning up in huge numbers on the South West

:00:38. > :00:46.South West Water has apologhsed after raw sewage poured into the sea

:00:47. > :00:49.at a beach in West Cornwall, while a surfing competition was being held.

:00:50. > :00:53.Warning signs were put up on the beach at Godrevy on Sattrday.

:00:54. > :00:57.The company said, heavy rainfall had overwhelmed the sewage systdm,

:00:58. > :01:00.causing the discharge, and said it was better to have it flowing

:01:01. > :01:02.into the sea, than backing tp into people's homes.

:01:03. > :01:05.But, as Emma Ruminski reports, the incident has raised serhous

:01:06. > :01:08.concerns and prompted calls for South West Water to do lore to

:01:09. > :01:23.Not the kind of photos you want to take home from your holiday in

:01:24. > :01:30.Cornwall. These pictures of Godrevy beach this weekend. The discharged

:01:31. > :01:35.sewage made him so angry he put them on the Internet. What did it look

:01:36. > :01:40.like? It was disgusting. Thd holy see was Brown and there werd

:01:41. > :01:45.thousands of people who werd using the beach and surfers were hn there.

:01:46. > :01:49.I think it is unacceptable that people are putting sewage onto

:01:50. > :01:56.something that is a public `menity. If it was a football field ht would

:01:57. > :02:03.be eight different story. The surf competition had to be stoppdd for

:02:04. > :02:09.one day acres of the affluent. It's going every year and then this

:02:10. > :02:13.happens. Maybe people will be wondering if it is safe to come here

:02:14. > :02:18.and send their children to the sea. The local surf school runs hts

:02:19. > :02:24.lessons from a different be`ch when this beach gets polluted. They want

:02:25. > :02:29.a new solution. We would be happy if they would stop it. Rates in this

:02:30. > :02:34.area are colossal. It would be nice to see some of that money bding

:02:35. > :02:38.spent in this area. South Wdst Water are permitted to discharge sewage at

:02:39. > :02:44.some beaches when the systel becomes overloaded by intense rainf`ll. It

:02:45. > :02:48.doesn't sound very good, but it s better to put it into the

:02:49. > :02:54.environment than into peopld's properties. They are old Victorian

:02:55. > :03:01.systems. There is a long`term plan to separate the two systems. What

:03:02. > :03:07.constitutes heavy when four? Time `` by the time the discharge w`s

:03:08. > :03:14.announced, the Bay was bathdd in sunshine. If we are having problems

:03:15. > :03:17.in these weather conditions, we have two us a question whether Southwest

:03:18. > :03:23.water have putted really expensive multi`million pound clean`up

:03:24. > :03:31.programme, but whether it is future proof. At the moment, surfers

:03:32. > :03:36.against sewage, still advisd waiting 24 hours after heavy rainfall before

:03:37. > :03:38.going surfing to avoid heavx discharges.

:03:39. > :03:40.It's being claimed a dramatic rise in stress`rdlated

:03:41. > :03:42.sickness in Devon and Cornwall Police has coinciddd with

:03:43. > :03:47.Figures from the Police Feddration show more than 700 days werd lost to

:03:48. > :03:52.The force, however, says, life outside work was to bl`me

:03:53. > :04:01.At a moment's notice, policd officers can be dealing with road

:04:02. > :04:05.Crime levels remain roughly the same, but it is being claimed

:04:06. > :04:11.We have seen a reduction in the number of police officers, `nd we

:04:12. > :04:16.There are less police officdrs and police staff doing the same job,

:04:17. > :04:19.so it is more for less, and I think that is taking ` strain

:04:20. > :04:26.The reduction in police numbers is unargu`ble

:04:27. > :04:32.Compared with 2010, Devon and Cornwall has 420 fewer officers

:04:33. > :04:42.In the year to April, there were 1821 days sickness through `nxiety.

:04:43. > :04:45.A rise of more than 600 from the previous year.

:04:46. > :04:51.Depression accounted for 3639 days lost, up by over 1,000.

:04:52. > :04:56.While 365 days were lost to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,

:04:57. > :05:00.The force says the problem hsn't growing, the figures look worse

:05:01. > :05:03.because of a reclassification of sickness categories.

:05:04. > :05:07.Policing has always been a demanding vocation and our officers and staff

:05:08. > :05:13.All the research says, work is good for you.

:05:14. > :05:15.When we ask officers why thdy are off with a psychological illness,

:05:16. > :05:18.invariably it is issues outside of the workplace.

:05:19. > :05:22.We work with them to get them back to work early.

:05:23. > :05:25.Claudia Foster is a counsellor who has helped police officdrs.

:05:26. > :05:28.Generally, she says, it is more acceptable for pdople to

:05:29. > :05:33.Often, they come to me and they haven't even been `ble to

:05:34. > :05:37.tell their family that they are feeling stressed or anxious.

:05:38. > :05:41.They haven't been able to tdll their work colleagues or

:05:42. > :05:49.I think if they still feel that to admit that they feel strdssed,

:05:50. > :05:57.The force says, help is at hand and overall sicknes

:05:58. > :06:00."Traumatised and powerless," that's how one young man felt after

:06:01. > :06:05.A unique approach to tackling the problem's been so successful,

:06:06. > :06:08.it's now in the running to win a national diversity award.

:06:09. > :06:11.Devon and Cornwall Police c`me up with the idea of using local

:06:12. > :06:15.celebrities to work with schools to raise awareness around hate crime,

:06:16. > :06:20.in the hope early interventhon can cut the rising number of incidents.

:06:21. > :06:23.The most recent figures for Devon and Cornwall show there havd been

:06:24. > :06:25.more than 1,000 hate crimes in the last year.

:06:26. > :06:31.The vast majority were raci`lly motivated, but people were `lso

:06:32. > :06:35.targeted because of their sdxual orientation, disability or religion.

:06:36. > :06:40.Well, the local heroes programme is now a charity in its own right and

:06:41. > :06:44.in a moment we'll be talking to its new patron, the actor Greg Wise

:06:45. > :06:51.First, this exclusive report from Andrea Ormsby.

:06:52. > :07:05.This is where being a rugby build helps. Famous TV chef Glenn Cosby,

:07:06. > :07:12.and 20`year`old Nathan Kneebone This is Local Heroes in acthon.

:07:13. > :07:22.Nathan has been the victim of hate crime. He was set on fire. Scared.

:07:23. > :07:27.Frightened. It was so unexpdcted and this was at lunchtime. I went into

:07:28. > :07:36.my neglect them and I couldn't really work. `` next lesson. It was

:07:37. > :07:42.really bad, really. The reason he was targeted was, because at the

:07:43. > :07:54.time, he had a illness that made him shake. But it and attack for being

:07:55. > :07:59.different. `` brilliant `` bullet. It needs to be stood up for. I am

:08:00. > :08:06.over the moon if I can lend my weight and my voice to trying to

:08:07. > :08:11.prevent the thing that happdned to Nathan happening again. I would be

:08:12. > :08:16.so happy to do it. Getting local celebrities on board is crucial to

:08:17. > :08:22.the Local Heroes programme. That is the idea of the inspector from the

:08:23. > :08:26.local police. The culture of celebrities is a key. Young people

:08:27. > :08:29.want to hear from people who have done amazing things. When pdople

:08:30. > :08:33.stand there in a tracksuit with a medal around their neck or people

:08:34. > :08:40.who've on TV, that pricks their attention. The pilot scheme launched

:08:41. > :08:43.by local police to tackle h`te crime in the classroom has been so

:08:44. > :08:51.successful it has become a charity in its own right. It has a

:08:52. > :08:55.nomination for an award. Thd national diversity award is key It

:08:56. > :08:59.helps raise awareness of thd charity and of hate crime and the work we

:09:00. > :09:05.do. It is not about winning the award itself, it's about people

:09:06. > :09:09.believing in what we do. Th`t for us is really flattering. What we need

:09:10. > :09:15.is a people who have been involved or do you believe in it to go to the

:09:16. > :09:20.website and vote for us. Thd Local Heroes campaign wants to promote

:09:21. > :09:24.values like tolerance, honesty, fairness and respect. Mixing local

:09:25. > :09:28.celebrities and youngsters to get a serious message across seemdd like a

:09:29. > :09:31.recipe for success. Earlier, I spoke to the actor

:09:32. > :09:33.Greg Wise, who's the new patron He started by telling me whx

:09:34. > :09:46.he got involved with it. In the olden days, if you h`ve

:09:47. > :09:53.problems, by the time you got onto the bus, you could calm down. Today,

:09:54. > :10:01.kids have this constant 24`7. As we have seen that asked FM and other

:10:02. > :10:12.things, kids can be affected by believing with other childrdn. What

:10:13. > :10:19.is really `` bullying. This can help kids change it. Do you have any

:10:20. > :10:24.personal experience? Unforttnately, I have experienced from both my

:10:25. > :10:35.children. My son is a black, Rand and Boyd. He got to study politics

:10:36. > :10:41.at university but he was subjected to racist abuse from his pedrs. And

:10:42. > :10:46.also from people in the widdr community in Exeter. My daughter, as

:10:47. > :10:53.well, at her junior school had quite a love the trouble with bullying. We

:10:54. > :10:57.all said there is nothing to fear from people who have a diffdrent

:10:58. > :11:01.ethnicity or sexual orientation or who may have some sort of

:11:02. > :11:06.disability. We are all in this together. We have got to make the

:11:07. > :11:13.best job of it that we can. Why do you think this initiative h`s taken

:11:14. > :11:23.us so well? I think, big cars it is being driven by the kids thdmselves.

:11:24. > :11:30.I am always passed it. `` I am way past it. I don't have an eldctric

:11:31. > :11:35.profile on Facebook, MySpacd. That shows what I know. I don't

:11:36. > :11:38.understand. Generally, a lot of the kids will feel that because they are

:11:39. > :11:45.surfing this new age of possibilities, given by the

:11:46. > :11:49.Internet, possibilities that are wonderful but that also,

:11:50. > :11:53.unfortunately, being abuse, they understand this and they ard being

:11:54. > :11:59.empowered to do something about it. I think that is the key to `ll

:12:00. > :12:04.things. It a cliche, but thd children of today, are the policy

:12:05. > :12:08.makers and leaders of tomorrow. They have two sort things out thdmselves

:12:09. > :12:13.so that this cycle does not keep permit in through our society. ``

:12:14. > :12:16.permeating. Well, in a statement,

:12:17. > :12:18.the University of Exeter told us, it has a zero tolerance approach to

:12:19. > :12:21.racism of any kind and that It adds,

:12:22. > :12:24.in this particular instance, clearly there were some isstes

:12:25. > :12:27.encountered by the student, but he was supported when these problems

:12:28. > :12:29.emerged, went on to enjoy hhs Amazing underwater footage

:12:30. > :12:37.of a giant jellyfish off our coast. Plus,

:12:38. > :12:42.a village remembers the poignant and spectacular commemoration to

:12:43. > :12:44.honour those who never returned Giant barrel jellyfish are still

:12:45. > :12:57.being seen in huge numbers The animals, which can be up to

:12:58. > :13:01.a metre in diameter, New video footage of Britain?s

:13:02. > :13:06.biggest jellyfish is currently proving to be a big hit

:13:07. > :13:09.on the internet. Spotlight?s David George has been to

:13:10. > :13:27.meet the man who captured This is the barrel jellyfish. It is

:13:28. > :13:32.huge! Up to one metre across and one and a half metres long. Hundreds of

:13:33. > :13:37.this usually rare sea creattre had been seen all along the south coast

:13:38. > :13:45.of Cornwall, Devon and Dorsdt. This was filmed in the Clearwater of the

:13:46. > :13:50.river. Matt Slater has filmdd the barrel daily fish. You are from the

:13:51. > :13:55.Cornwall Maritime trust. Yotr dog is important, too. You must be really

:13:56. > :14:00.pleased with this footage. H am It's amazing how many peopld have

:14:01. > :14:04.already viewed it. We have had over 10,000 hits in a couple of days

:14:05. > :14:11.Talk to us about the movement of the jellyfish. They are very gr`ceful

:14:12. > :14:16.and that polls sates `` pulsates them along. They are actively

:14:17. > :14:25.swimming and hunting for food. They can't move along much, they drift

:14:26. > :14:28.with the tides, don't they? Yes They travel large distances up and

:14:29. > :14:37.down to the water. You get ` sense of stale `` scale because you filmed

:14:38. > :14:40.your dog swimming with them. It happened by accident that she swam

:14:41. > :14:45.through the shot. It gives xou an idea of the scale. They are 80

:14:46. > :14:48.centimetres wide and they c`n be over one metre long, hanging down

:14:49. > :14:55.underneath them. It is quitd impressive. It is also some of each

:14:56. > :15:02.season, children and adults. Are they dangerous? You don't h`ve to

:15:03. > :15:05.worry. Fortunately, they ard completely harmless. All jellyfish

:15:06. > :15:15.are capable of stinging, but in the UK, the Sting cannot get through

:15:16. > :15:20.asking `` our skin. Just as well! This is a first year in a while they

:15:21. > :15:24.are seen in such numbers. Why they are seen in these numbers comes down

:15:25. > :15:28.to lots of different factors combine. This year has been a good

:15:29. > :15:35.year for this species, tempdrature, and under food, predators, has meant

:15:36. > :15:40.that they thrived. In other years, they don't. Let's talk about the

:15:41. > :15:45.predators of the giant barrdl jellyfish. That is leatherb`ck

:15:46. > :15:51.turtle. They were expected to arrive here, because the barrels are here.

:15:52. > :15:58.Somebody has seen some. Yes, we have had two sightings, one in F`lmouth

:15:59. > :16:04.and wanted the West. All although this jellyfish has almost bdcome

:16:05. > :16:08.common in the South West of this year only, wildlife trusts would do

:16:09. > :16:12.like to see reports of sightings. And if you see a leatherback

:16:13. > :16:17.turtle, that really would bd the icing on the cake ``.

:16:18. > :16:20.The owner of the Cornish Pirates rugby team is standing down

:16:21. > :16:25.Dicky Evans has been at the helm of the Pirates for nearly 20 years,

:16:26. > :16:27.providing funds to maintain the team's status in the second tier

:16:28. > :16:31.The businessman, who's now based in Kenya, has paid off all

:16:32. > :16:33.the Pirates? debts and written off all loans, leaving them debt free.

:16:34. > :16:37.A new board of directors will now run the club.

:16:38. > :16:39.The sacrifices and the bravery demonstrated

:16:40. > :16:41.during the First World War `re being remembered by communities

:16:42. > :16:45.across the region this year, 10 years after the conflict st`rted.

:16:46. > :16:48.Almost every family was affdcted in some way, but one Dartmoor

:16:49. > :16:52.village believes it lost a greater proportion of its enlisted

:16:53. > :16:58.Northlew has marked the anniversary with the help

:16:59. > :17:01.of a vintage aircraft and uniforms from the time, alongside sole modern

:17:02. > :17:13.Louise Walter was there to see how the poignant commemoration tnfolded.

:17:14. > :17:26.All eyes were on the sky as the plane flew past the village. The

:17:27. > :17:32.World War I by playing, survived the men and women who flew with her It

:17:33. > :17:39.started an evening of commeloration. One very special guest, a Chelsea

:17:40. > :17:43.pensioner, evacuated to Northllew during the Second World War. For

:17:44. > :17:49.Brian, a meaningful return to the village. It's very important that

:17:50. > :17:57.children should know what h`s happened here, and how we British

:17:58. > :18:03.deal with this sort of thing. I think Northlew itself has a very

:18:04. > :18:08.good reason for wanting to do that because so many people did not come

:18:09. > :18:18.back. I am sure many will bd inspired. Marching together, to

:18:19. > :18:23.generations of the same famhly in period uniform, representing the

:18:24. > :18:28.soldiers enlisted in what w`s then at farming village. This farmer and

:18:29. > :18:34.his band of sons, had a momdnt of reflection. I felt quite emotional

:18:35. > :18:39.when I was marching through on horseback. I felt honoured to be

:18:40. > :18:51.asked to do this. Quite protd. I respect the men who went to war and

:18:52. > :18:59.Ford. `` fought. The sun setting, The Last Post echoed through the

:19:00. > :19:06.village. A moment of contemplation. So well done, so poignant. So worth

:19:07. > :19:12.remembering. I think everyone thinks that. Quite moving really, to think

:19:13. > :19:16.about it. It was meant to bd the war to end all wars, but it didn't. Lots

:19:17. > :19:29.of people died. It is good to remember it. Then, through the dusk,

:19:30. > :19:34.a call to arms. 3`D images projected on to village buildings, brhnging

:19:35. > :19:44.home, quite literally, the scale of the tragedy to the watching

:19:45. > :19:49.audience. The noise, this ydar, the conditions may have been captured on

:19:50. > :19:59.grainy film, but it made thd reality of war very clear. Until finally,

:20:00. > :20:09.the piece. The roll call of fallen men, the whole village fell silent.

:20:10. > :20:21.Incredibly poignant. Stunning. A green fireball meteor seen over

:20:22. > :20:39.the UK has been captured on camera The pictures are in black and white.

:20:40. > :20:48.It is called a bolide meteor. Quite a big one. That was that 3al this

:20:49. > :20:54.morning. You needed to be up pretty early to see it. Whether we will see

:20:55. > :21:01.any more tonight, I don't know. But pretty clear skies. It's mostly dry,

:21:02. > :21:06.some sunshine. From Friday, quite a change. We see a new area of low

:21:07. > :21:09.pressure head our way. Some uncertainty about how much rain we

:21:10. > :21:14.are likely to see. There is clouded to the west of us, which has been

:21:15. > :21:20.producing some showers across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It

:21:21. > :21:26.trickles southward, still a risk of seeing if you showers. It moves down

:21:27. > :21:30.towards the northern part of Spain, Portugal and western France. I the

:21:31. > :21:37.time you get the middle of the week it has died into the Mediterranean.

:21:38. > :21:41.A thin area of high pressurd, which brings Britain a love the fhne

:21:42. > :21:47.weather the end of the week. Even though weather systems approach from

:21:48. > :21:54.the West on Thursday, they week and they bring a band of cloud. This is

:21:55. > :22:05.the picture from earlier today, the cloud has been well broken. We got

:22:06. > :22:10.lovely shot of a kaleidoscope of clouds in the sky, someone was

:22:11. > :22:13.patchy. Plenty of dry weathdr for this part of Devon and Cornwall

:22:14. > :22:19.Further west, we have had a few showers. For most of us, it has been

:22:20. > :22:29.a reasonable day and quite warm in that sunshine. The cloud we have

:22:30. > :22:32.seen along the south coast will fade away for a time overnight btt it is

:22:33. > :22:37.still big enough to produce some showers. Most likely in the far west

:22:38. > :22:45.of Cornwall. Clear skies along the north coast Devon into Somerset For

:22:46. > :22:51.most of us, 13 of 14 degrees minimum. The cloud might be a bit

:22:52. > :22:55.stubborn along the English Channel coast, the main story is a fine dry

:22:56. > :23:00.weather with increasing amotnts of sunshine. The sun will come out for

:23:01. > :23:11.all of us, with some patchy cloud along the Channel coast. Thd Arles

:23:12. > :23:30.is a silly, briefly some `` Isles of Scilly, high water temperattres For

:23:31. > :23:42.our surface, water will be cleaner. `` surface. Let's look at the

:23:43. > :23:49.outlook. It looks pretty good. Wednesday is a lovely day, plenty of

:23:50. > :23:53.sunshine. You have to get up early to see that. Sunshine to enjoy, and

:23:54. > :23:58.temperatures responding. Mostly fine on Thursday, cloudy a littld and

:23:59. > :24:06.they change on Friday. More details about that tomorrow. Thank xou for

:24:07. > :24:16.joining us at this later tile. We are back tomorrow at the sale time,

:24:17. > :24:18.7:35pm. I hope you can join us then stop have a good evening.
